I used to smoke 1.5-2 packs of cigarettes a day absolutely loved it. I even got to the point I was growing about five different strains of tobacco and curing it myself. I was actually upset about something personal a few minutes ago, but watching this all the way through was... Oddly comforting. Not even joking. It's surreal.
Because doctors back then didnt have enough evidence showing that cigarettes are bad for health. When the lung cancer death rate increased over time, they researched more about it and found out eventually. Cigarettes, at one point were even approved by physicians as harmless which sounds very wrong.

Best way out of all my methods of stopping smoking was using nicotine patches. Try it dude! Smokers crave on nicotine, not on tobacco & tobacco is the thing that causes cancer, not nicotine.
I can’t believe they would advertise this filthy disgusting habit on tv back then! That reminds me, I’m down to my last two packs. Time to head to the convenience store.
The idea was to sell menthol cigarettes because they seemed less harsh. I’m old enough that I remember cigarette ads on television and one of those ads was for Salem cigarettes that had the jingle “you can take Salem out of the country, but! you can’t take the country out of Salem”. The surgeon general warning and the evidence that smoking contributed to cancer was starting to pile up. So this was, I think, a way to circumvent people quitting.
I remember seeing ashtrays in doctors offices and hospital waiting rooms in the late 1960's. Now you can even smoke within 50 yards of a hospital even if it is on a busy street. I guess that the exhaust fumes of cars and trucks must become healthier over the last fifty years.
A lot of the themes for cigarette commercials were sung by a popular music group called the Chordettes. More commonly known for their hit song "Mr sandman".

Even though I am a smoker, I’m just watching this with my jaw wide-open, no matter how many different ways they try to say it, there’s just nothing glamorous about giving yourself cancer or emphysema! Even though tobacco is heavily regulated here in Toronto and in Canada, it’s still just as dangerous as it was back then, but I just can’t get over the way they advertised it, it’s like they’re talking about candy! Being in my 50s, I remember a lot of these commercials when I was a little boy, I also remember that nearly every single person smoked, because it was as socially acceptable just having a drink. It just boggles my mind that they were able to get away with false advertising, misleading advertising, as they peddled their deadly product to the masses, knowing full well that it was responsible for cancer, emphysema, liver and kidney damage, to name just a few. I had my first cigarette when I was eight years old, my dad was a heavy smoker at the time, and I’ll never forget that day. We were on our way to the cottage, and my parents had to run into Kmart to pick up a few items they forgot, and my father left his cigarette burning in the ashtray in the car, so naturally, I picked it up and took a puff, just then, my father showed up seconds after he left the car, because he forgot his wallet in the glove box. That was over 40 years ago and I can still remember him yelling and screaming, telling me that if he ever caught me doing that again he would make me smoke the entire pack until I turned green! Parents were so hypocritical back then, telling us how horrible it is, while at the same time smoking constantly in front of us. I remember my dad used to smoke in the car with the windows rolled up in the air conditioning on. He had just bought a brand new Chevy Malibu, and the tobacco smoke combined with that plastic new car smell made me so sick I threw up the entire way to the cottage, and even after I begged him to stop smoking in the car, I just got an earful, telling me it was my own fault because I ate bag bag of chips. He refused to acknowledge it was his tobacco smoke that was making me sick, and my father smoked over two packs a day, I used to go to the Becker’s (anybody remember those stores? I think they were a precursor to 7-Eleven‘s) to buy his cigarettes, because I was always allowed to keep the change. I remember specifically they were $1.25 a pack, I’m back then we had two dollar bills, leaving me with 75 cents. For those that don’t know, but then you could buy a lot of stuff for 75 cents. I remember that a can of pop was five cents, a chocolate bar or a bag of chips we’re only 10 cents.... so I could buy end of junk food for days, and my father would smoke both packs that I bought him in one day, so I need list to say I was a fat kid! It was such a different world back then, a world where nobody considered the ramifications of their actions especially when it came to smoking, or eating junk food. I remember standing on the subway platform, and people smoking waiting for the train to show up, and the tracks completely covered with cigarette butts. You could smoke pretty much anywhere, except inside any public transit vehicle, you could even smoke in the hospitals back then. It’s no wonder that people died before 70! My grandfather died of a massive stroke at the age of 68, it was his third stroke in less than two months, he used to smoke export A’s. Any Canadians remember those? They had no filter, and my grandfather would buy a tin of tobacco, and roll his own cigarettes using a little machine that he had, I used to help him. It’s amazing how much times have changed, and what’s deemed socially acceptable and non-acceptable. I started smoking full-time when I was in grade 9, because my high school had a huge park behind it, so I would either steal my dad‘s cigarettes, or by rolling paper, and smoke whatever I can find in the park, including dried up leaves, grass, tree bark, you name it I smoked it, and got really really sick for being so stupid and ignorant, but because I lived with two smokers (mom smoked too, but not as much as dad) I just kept on smoking like an idiot, trying to look cool in front of my friends, and it worked. Peer pressure was a huge part of smoking back then, if you were part of the in crowd, then you smoked! Unfortunately like everyone else I got addicted to them, and while I have tried quitting more times than I can remember, I still smoke to this day. Problem is, I really enjoy smoking, I suffer from extreme anxiety and depression, and have more health issues than you would believe, because of those health problems I can no longer drink alcohol, I’m allergic to marijuana, and I absolutely refuse, and I always have, to take street drugs, so cigarettes are my fix, my addiction, and while I am fully aware of the implications, after spending the last three decades of my life having 37 surgeries because of Crohn’s disease, intestinal cancer, +9 other chronic illnesses that I developed as side effects from the first two, cigarettes or a coping mechanism, and no matter how many times I have tried to quit, it just doesn’t work because I enjoy smoking far too much. I get my cigarettes extremely cheap as I have a few connections where I can buy three cartons of cigarettes for less than $95, and I smoked three cartons a month (I think there are 200 cigarettes in each carton). I reached a point in my life after going through so much hell, but I just said screw it, my health is already a disaster, because of all the genetic illnesses, (I am from the shallow end of the gene pool), are use tobacco to come myself down, and it does work. The only positive thing I can say it’s all go for periods that last for several days, when I’m just too sick to smoke, but then I pick it right back up again. I think I am my own worst enemy, thank God both my parents right now in their late 80s are still alive, my father is officially the oldest man to move that long in his entire family thanks to modern medicine, but the smoking took it’s toll and then some. He’s had a quadruple bypass, almost every artery in his body was almost 100% clogged with plaque, if it wasn’t for his pacemaker, he would not be here, but I think God every day is is still around, Yep that’s still isn’t enough to get me to stop smoking, crazy isn’t it? But quite frankly, after all the hell that I have been through, at this point I really don’t care if I live or die, but I promise myself one thing, my dying words aren’t going to be “ God I wish I had a cigarette”! It’s just nice to know that this generation and all generations after it have a very low number of smokers at least here in Canada, and it is a very heavily regulated industry, so it brings me some peace and comfort knowing I’ll probably be the last generation that will most likely die of a smoking related illness, but now we have alcoholism, and drug abuse on the rise, to the point where we are losing at least a dozen homeless people every single day in the downtown core alone. Unfortunately addiction is a reoccurring theme in almost every culture on earth, I pray for the day when that is no longer the case.
Wow I read all of that, I hope stuff gets better for you. I am a current smoker at 17 it's tough it really is. Yeah I feel like their will always be something we're addicted to it's rough when we live in a world filled with craziness. At the end of the day just focus on you. Peace bro.

Cigarettes “refresh” “fresher” “clean” LMAO, MY ASS
The idea was to sell menthol cigarettes because they seemed less harsh. I’m old enough that I remember cigarette ads on television and one of those ads was for Salem cigarettes that had the jingle “you can take Salem out of the country, but! you can’t take the country out of Salem”. The surgeon general warning and the evidence that smoking contributed to cancer was starting to pile up. So this was, I think, a way to circumvent people quitting.
I should add it’s just wonderful how people left cigarette butts all over the place even in these commercials taunting clean and refreshing.

Peace bro.

Ahhh, the “micronite” (asbestos) filters of Kent cigarettes! If the nicotine don’t kill you the asbestos will.
Should be the reason those fuckers taste like shit then
Nicotine does not harm the body physically, the tar does tho
is this how we'll be looking at "early 2000's sugar ads" in the future?
a l no
@@calvantisclean1571 I'm sure they thought the same way about cigarettes.. sure it can make you fat, but if you eat in moderation - you'll be just fine.. not all sugar is bad.. as long as you're exercising.. red-bull is good for sports.. etc etc etc.
@@not_a_human_being Your body needs sugar dumbass!! Just not the fake sugars and huge amounts of it!
@@not_a_human_being Sugar doesn't make you fat.
@a l Nobody thinks Red Bull is “good for sports”
Now they lure you in with a picture of a gengenous black toe.
Or a person with a hole in their neck from throat cancer and speaking with a robotic talking device
And yet people still smoke, rates not even decreasing by that much...
I wander, WHY DON'T THEY JUST STOP PRODUCING CIGARETTES RATHER THAN JUST PUTTING THESE WARNINGS
Katie lol You have any idea what’s going to happen if they ban cigarettes? You know how much money they make from cigarette sales alone? They won’t be banning cigarettes any time soon.
@@LazyLizzy706 Crime rates would soar up im telling you, countries would loose so much money on tax and its not even that hard to grow your own tobacco, grand-father has been growing and drying his own for many years
What I learned from this video:
York has imperial sized cigarettes
Kent has a filter
Newport has a minty taste
What exactly do I do with this information
Keltic Warrior88
Go get yourself a pack of Newport’s of course!! They go great with the fresh winter air and I highly recommend them. They’re the second most popular smoke in the USA after Marlboro!!
I mean it will help you make conversation if you travel to the 60s maybe
@@Lion-dr7uv unhealthy cancer
Create an imperial sized menthol cigarette with a filter ?
@@plukke_b2048 If I was a smoker, I would buy those.
Funny how they pushed the taste.
It's like saying new Forbes mild mint heroin, feel the flavour rush down your veins, arrr refreshing
You win
Try Benson and Hedges menthol cocaine, drips down your throat smooooooth.
Tobacco companies are going to start paying TH-cam to recommend this to people. Since they cant run commercials anymore 😂
Red Redmon 😂😂😂
It's business 😄
They’re vaping on analog Juuls
In Canada JUULS has a warning label. POISON. But like most peeps they don't read or don't care. Inhaling any kind of smoke or poison or dust or toxins in small amounts over a long period of time is often suicide.
Hahah analog juuls. Genius. Well done
millerdaleman everything is poisonous in high amounts. Juuling is safe
@@millerdaleman There are countrues where they legally make cigarrette manufactures out pictures of cancer on the cigarrette box. With a warning telling you that it happens if you smoke. People still buy that shit is beyond addictive.

the newport logo is literally nike’s, upside down
David Roberts - 1 month ago
I worked at a gas station and that’s how I memorized which cigs were Newport’s because I wasn’t to familiar at first with all of them since I was new and don’t smoke cigs
Maggie12MD didn’t see that
McLaren
Or maybe Nike’s is Newport’s upside down
Can't wait to take clips from these and edit them into a 60's high school dance video with melancholic indie music playing over it
🏳️🌈
Newport’s taste like shit but those ads made me want one
Umm... Have you ever even tried a Newport?? They're pretty damn good actually.
Newports are the best wym

Kent 4life
Idk I quite like Newport’s but marb reds are definatly better
1960: Colourful Cigarette packets with attractive packaging, advertising, logos, reputation, etc.
2020 : Black and white packets with severe health warnings and photos of dead bodies, with zero advertising allowed.
I mean I think that's for the better, as long as society doesn't bother the smokers themselves
I think commercials in general that has the word cigarette or cigars are gonna encourage kids to smoke more so truth and real cost are actually encouraging it by mentioning it so there actually doing less
Not in my country. The warning is on the side of the pack.
CamaroAmx | What country is that?
wverntattoo the USA.
There was an attempt to put the warnings on the entire front of the pack in the early 90s, but congress shot it down.
Lungs: that’s a lot of damage
Cigarette: How about a little more
Just Virdit the most underrated comment ever
Cigar: *NOW THAT'S A LOTTA DAMAGE!!!*
Cigarette: NOW THATS ALOTTA DAMAGE!
