- In one corner we have the gaunt malnourished British-style hotdogs and in the other we have the more robust American style hotdogs. But in a head to head battle of who can pass the most current while being electrocuted - who will win?
Trehalose appears to be a sugar with unusual properties like moisture retention and bonding.
Results below:-
The competing hot dogs were pitted against 240V in teams of six with points awarded for current passed and peak power. Other points were awarded for style.
The UK themed hotdogs passed a peak of 13A (2.99kW) before they started exploding really forcibly at 24 seconds.
The USA themed hot dogs passed a huge 17.57A (3.995kW) before they started arcing and popping at 22 seconds.
The winner is America. But the British hot dogs get a special mention for actually exploding with unreasonable force at the end.

As an American, I must say, this is the first time in my life I've ever seen hot dogs extracted from a can.
"Vienna sausages" are basically canned mini hot dogs, and seem to be prevalent in the US. They usually end up being used in some kind of appetizer tray.
Vienna sausages are NOT Chicago Vienna hot dogs! Barely solid mush, rolled up and stuffed in a can. Ate a lot of them as a kid. No idea why.

The ingredients he read are not in the typical American Hotdog. The ones I buy are beef hotdogs and there isn't chicken or pork anywhere near them. It might be typical for the immitation things he electrocuted, not a Kogels or Nathans hotdog. Any meat coming out of a can is going to taste like dog food.

I actually owned and operated one of these. It was back in the 60's and I found it in a thrift shop. It would cook a full load in a minute or less. And they were always juicy and cooked. The taste was fantastic!! Even the burnt parts were good. Boiling hot dogs leaves the flavor in the pan. Electrocuting kept the taste in the meat!! And this was LONG before some tech got a soft chocolate bar in his pocket so this was instant for the day. I really enjoyed this video. Not sure which I want most, the cooker, or back to the 60's!! Thank you for this!!

From all the times I forgot that I'm holding the wire I'm trying to solder I found out that burning flesh smells a lot like bacon.
Nope, and I don't want to know. When my mother microwaved hot dogs in the microwave, she took it too far, and they burst at the ends like exploded cigars. They smelled like burnt bandaids. It often made me lose my appetite.
I typed that a little fast. Where else would you microwave hot dogs but in a microwave? Radar transmitter maybe?
While soldering I've burned myself many times, and you get this nauseating burning flesh smell that's kinda reminicent of burnt pork.
I can't eat or cook pork anymore as a result, it brings back this smell every time and it disgusts me.

As an electrician usually I use German sausages in the Siemens fused disconnects that I install rather then shelling out the money for fuses especially under 60A.
Those fuses are definitely fat enough you can replace them with some wurst.
A friend from the UK actually came to visit the states recently, first thing he asked for was to see why we're so obsessed with hot dogs. He soon found out, he says the hot dogs in the cans are garbage in comparison.

I have to say, you may have saved my house from burning down. I just discovered your channel a few days ago, and your videos have gotten me thinking more about the safety of lithium-ion batteries, and I noticed that my laptop was kind of rocking on the desk instead of lying flat, and sure enough, the battery (an OEM Dell unit, even) was bulging out. So I got rid of that right away and a replacement should be arriving tomorrow. Thank you for being both educational and fun, keep it up.

As an American, may I say that there are many kinds of American hot dogs but basically they fall into four kinds; Franks (made from pure beef), Wieners (made from mostly Pork), and more recently; Turkey and Chicken hot dogs for those who want healthier fare, (not counting veggie dogs which I don't count as real hot dogs).
I prefer Oscar Mayer brand Angus beef franks which are also skinless (some hot dogs have a natural casing like sausages) and uncured (i.e. no brine). Also, you can't enjoy a real American hot dog experience without eating it with a hot dog bun and your favorite condiment topping, which might be Ketchup (Catsup), Mustard, Relish, Sauerkraut, chopped Onions, Chili, Pickle spear, Banana Pepper, liquid Cheddar (Nacho) cheese, etc; or any combination thereof.
Hot dogs should also be served with Potato Chips (crisps), or Potato Sticks (either on the side or as a topping) or French Fries (chips) on the side.
American hot dogs are usually found vacuum packed and in the refrigerated section of our grocery store.
For the best flavor, I score them with a knife, boil them for 7 minutes and then cook them on the grill till they have grill marks on them. Delicious! :) You should try them that way sometime.

Fun fact! The count of hot dogs and buns is almost always different much to the (minor) frustration of the american public (hot dogs in packs of 10 usually, buns in packs of 8). This is apparently due to the way the bun assembly lines work with the size of baking pan they use back from rationing laws in WWII.

Many hot dogs sold in grocery stores do indeed contain mechanically separated chicken, unless you specifically buy the ones labelled "beef franks".
We would call these large Vienna sausages, which, of course, are not made in Vienna.
The British hotdogs have the handicap of us not having a history of electrocuting people to draw upon.

For single hot dog cooking a single Microwave Oven transformer should get you there in about 5 seconds; the temptation is to run two MOTs in an output centre-commoned arrangement (gives around 3.5 - 4kv without the multiplier circuitry), and try cooking a "series chain" of hot dogs. Extra points for flashover!! :=D
As an American I've never in my life seen hot dogs come in a tin. They're always in a clear plastic pack where the lunch meats for sandwiches are. Which means if you were in an apocalypse situation and really wanted hot dogs then these would be a godsend!

When I was in elementary school the local electrical utility, Public Service company of Oklahoma or PSO... a division of American Electric Power or AEP, came and put 15kV through a variety of things with a huge cart mounted isolation transformer hooked to the pole outside.
They used really cheap squishy hot dogs for maximum blast.
That sounds awesome! In West Virginia, Union Carbide used to freeze everyday objects with liquid nitrogen and do experiments on them. They would pound a large nail into a piece of wood with a frozen banana called "the banana hammer", they shattered a frozen hi-bounce ball like it was glass, and they broke a frozen rose.
Was it like a PSA sort of deal to stop kids screwing around at the transformers? In our science class in the UK we cover electric and the math around it, also the dangers. A similar hot dog 'experiment' was done at my school lol. Very messy.

I don't know if Costco sells them in the UK, but the house brand/Kirkland Signature 1/4 pound hot dogs are among the best available in the US imo. They are also like 3 times the size of these, which is fitting for a Costco product.

What's really interesting about the hot dog cooker is it's roughly 100% efficient if there's no arcing. A direct line to mains is something that could only happen in the 70's

I've been an American all 33 years of my life and I have NEVER seen hotdogs in a can. Ever. Not on tv, books, magazines, nothing. I didn't know such a thing even existed.
What I consider a standard US hotdog doesn't come in a can, more of a vacuumed pouch. Vienna sausages do, however.

1) I didn't know there's such a thing as canned hotdogs (only tiny Vienna Sausages).
