How would this have played out,if the Doctor hadn’t landed there?
The scenes involving the lighthouse is very effective. The cgi rutan is good but i far prefer the original. It feels more organic looking rather than a one eye creature.
I think they did an excellent job with the updated special effects. They look in-keeping with the production values of the time, and give a feel of what the story might have looked like if they had a better budget. This also (hopefully) makes them less likely to age badly as modern technology improves (as happened with The Ark in Space)
i liked the original effects over the replacements, and besides it's a good story that makes a good Dr Who, all those different characters with different motivations and they all die! Excellent stuff from Terrance Dicks.

It's a good balance. They could have gone much further with the cgi technology available, but that would have been been jarring and disjointed. 'Dinosaurs' is the one that's crying out for cgi.
I like how they made the new Rutan still look like a puppet. Like I can imagine the strings above it helping it move. It's a nice touch. It's funny because it nearly fooled me into thinking they made a puppet, shot scenes with it and inserted it back over the original Rutan. The new Rutan is actually a practical model that Chris Thompson composited into a new background plate. He proudly displays said model at the BFI screening, photos of which are readily available online.
Most look very good except for the boat shots. It's an entirely different boat i n one shot (and too big). The crash is not great either.. Interesting how the new shots are all about hiding rather than revealing. Keeping more of the mystery of the story.
Regarding "hiding"... I was surprised how some of the "new" effects were how they "fogged" up the camera view. Suppose it does help in some respects mask the Indoor Studio feel some. In others it seems like the Rutan or the setting POV is needlessly visually impaired. Realize they want to hide model work or "feather" the Video some for the Rutan POV... Maybe should have gone with Predator Vision or something. Taking the cleaner "1977" studio video and overlayed a Negative Image and/or IR view for "Reuben the Rutan"... Instead it looks like it just has Cateracts.
I don't think these new effects do really anything for me. That inaccurate TARDIS model bothers me the most. Outside of the Doctor Who sketches from EBC1, and the new documentaries, I'm not overly impressed with this set.
Most of these are pretty good, though I kind of feel like the cso backgrounds around the lighthouse balcony at the start look more interesting in the original
New Rutan looks like updated monster from fifties B movie The Trollenberg Terror or a shot at the Martians from War of the Worlds ( a far better one than the Hollywood or BBC versions too )
I might be in the minority here but I don't like the new effects for the Rutan when it is disguised as Ruben, I prefer the old effects to be honest same goes for the boat it's too large in the new one and it doesn't evoke a sense of danger like the old effects do, yes the old effects for the boat are far from perfect but at least you see it get damaged. The other effects are quite nice although the TARDIS looks more like the modern TARDIS props than the one from 1977 which at that point was the Newberry prop.
From my point of view, their are several inconsistency's to this video that doesn't fit to the storyline of the episode. 1. The shooting star of the Ruton ship was ok, but it was to far off in the shot. Needs to be a bit bigger or coming in from another angle. 2. The fog was perfect the way it was, their was no need to add more to possibly block a shot. 3.The steam ship render was good, but the red flares were just blobs of light. It needed to have a red glowing smoke trail going over the boat highlighting parts of the boat red. 4. The electricity the Ruton gave off was to showy, it should have bin like arcing bolts of current, highlighting & popping out of random points of the victims body like a plasma globe. 5. The Ruton Transformation, this is a biggy point to make. The Ruton human shape is most likely a holographic projection from its own body like a bioluminescent fish, which was mentioned in the episode, not a splitting human body suit. 6. The Ruton itself, another biggy of mine. The Ruton is suppose to be like a grate jellyfish with electrical stinger cell barb tentacles that it uses to pull itself along threw the scene. You could have had the tentacles shoot out, grabbing things to pull itself threw the shot. With a little glow or arc of green electrical sparks were it touches, like a live wire on the floor or metal hand bars up the stairs. Not a floating octopus with a googly eye. Anyway, that's my opinion, my view of the effects to the episode. And don't think of what I said as a disappointed anger to the video, more on the lines of, another possible view to contemplate.
As usual, some of the new shots are pointless and appear to be there for the sake of doing something different. I do like the new Rutan, but the over-the-shoulder shots of it talking to the Dr are disappointing. There is far more interesting detail on the original's "head" and when it dies, what on earth is taking the new one so long? At least the original melted and slid down the stairs. Oh, and as it climbed up the outside of the lighthouse - the new one was more shit than the original. That certainly wouldn't have become a defining memory in my 6 year old self like the original shot did.
I haven't started collecting the new ones yet so I didn't know they did this. I like some of the new effects, and they're obviously trying to make the styles fit. But I think they're give and take. I actually don't like Rutan design they added. The old one has a charm, and the new one looks too generic--they should've kept it as more of a sea-slime that slides across the rocks and the stairs. That and the extra fog they added in post is just unnecessary. But I do like how the last shot shows the sun coming up on a now lifeless lighthouse. Very moody.
Horror of Fang Rock is my all time favourtite classic who but by removinng certain things (the old effects) it completely diminishes a lot of the story for me
Given that they already had to go through at least 20 props just to make the one story (the bulb to make the glow also destroyed the materials), it’s entirely impossible that’s the same prop!
I prefer the original. All they should have done was add in some CGI jellyfish-like tentacles to grab the stair and walls like it's pulling itself along. The body was effective as it was. The new Rutan looked too much like a stiff rubber toy. The zip down the middle of Ruben effect was just silly looking. Won't be watching it with the new effects. The spaceship looks kinda cool but I believe the books describe their spaceships as as crystalline. The new boat effect was a little more realistic looking and about the best part of the update besides the spaceship.
Nope. The shipwreck was the only improvement. As always the animatiors put too much movement into the mix. I never had a problem with the original, it looked REAL. It glistened like wet seaweed and slime. Go on, try doing that with a computer.
The Rutan “Mothership” doesn’t look that impressive. The Rutan appears to move like a biped, and nobody still hasn’t realised (since 1977) that the Lamp in the Lamp gallery is far too small. It’s virtually the size of a domestic lightbulb.
I honestly am disappointed with the updated effects I personally think they should have drawn influence from octopi I know it's more jellyfish inspired but it makes sense to draw influence from a similar creature
@@DanTheMan2150AD I mean for the movement I know octopi were the inspiration for the nestene (and I really hope they fix the effects of power of kroll)(they also inspired the zygon design) And I know rutans are jellyfish inspired But honestly having the rutans fling it's tentacles up the staircase and hall itself up would feel more realistic I know it's sci-fi and not real but the way they have it basically floats the way they had it do, just takes me out of the story, at least with movements inspired by other sea life I could accept it more
eh, the original electrocutions are more punchy. It's cool that they did this but I wish they saved the buget for episodes that really need it. It'd be cool to see them fix the lighting in the 5/6 era, everything is so over-lit. Still cool, but glad you can turn it off.
The added light of the lighthouse is nice. Otherwise this is entirely pointless and inferior to the original, as these things always are. The Dalek Invasion of Earth was the only good one, and they never attempted another black & white story again for some reason.
Ah a Luddite😂 Many many people, notably nearly every interviewee who actually worked on the programme in some capacity, have expressed an interest in seeing what could be done with modern technology, (some of those have even been involved on these updates), so if It can be done why not try it? Hardly pointless. Granted some re-dos work better than others but it’s a nice extra and the originals are always there if you can’t handle it. A lot of us parting with cash like having the option. As for the b/w stories there’s still 5 seasons to come. Personally I wouldn’t be keen on something like that ghastly Daleks re-edit but I can see a few stories where a touch up in the vein of DIOE would be interesting.
The one thing that stuck out was obviously the Rutan redesign which was pretty cool and much better than the original followed by the more believable ship striking land. Always enjoy seeing these.

Every time the original effects are better. Every time.
Nah
I don't think these new effects do really anything for me. That inaccurate TARDIS model bothers me the most. Outside of the Doctor Who sketches from EBC1, and the new documentaries, I'm not overly impressed with this set.
Honestly, the new Rutan model is a massive improvement over the original, plus those new shots of the lighthouse give the story more atmosphere.
Most of these are pretty good, though I kind of feel like the cso backgrounds around the lighthouse balcony at the start look more interesting in the original
I love some or the effects but the extra fog outside the lighthouse doesn't add much
Just makes the outside match with the dialogue in terms of how fast and how thick it is.
I disagree, for me it was very effective and added a lot of atmosphere.
Love the charm of the original miniatures, remind me of Michael Bentine's Potty Time.
I wish these could be purchased seperately.
I actually prefer the original effects.
I prefer the original effects too.
The creature in this serial made an appearance in new who. In the two parter daleks in Manhattan and evolution of the daleks.
I actually like the old effects.
I could have done without the head splitting and joining. It looked worse than the original effect.
It's well done but the crap effects are part of the charm!
Not really
New Rutan looks like updated monster from fifties B movie The Trollenberg Terror or a shot at the Martians from War of the Worlds ( a far better one than the Hollywood or BBC versions too )
"Leave me beeee...." 🙂
Much prefer the original atleast the rutan looks realistically organic the new version just looks like a computer animated cartoon.
The new one is a practical puppet that’s been composited into the frame…
As usual, some of the new shots are pointless and appear to be there for the sake of doing something different.
I do like the new Rutan, but the over-the-shoulder shots of it talking to the Dr are disappointing. There is far more interesting detail on the original's "head" and when it dies, what on earth is taking the new one so long? At least the original melted and slid down the stairs.
Oh, and as it climbed up the outside of the lighthouse - the new one was more shit than the original. That certainly wouldn't have become a defining memory in my 6 year old self like the original shot did.
Nah bro
I haven't started collecting the new ones yet so I didn't know they did this. I like some of the new effects, and they're obviously trying to make the styles fit. But I think they're give and take.
I actually don't like Rutan design they added. The old one has a charm, and the new one looks too generic--they should've kept it as more of a sea-slime that slides across the rocks and the stairs. That and the extra fog they added in post is just unnecessary.
But I do like how the last shot shows the sun coming up on a now lifeless lighthouse. Very moody.
Horror of Fang Rock is my all time favourtite classic who
but by removinng certain things (the old effects) it completely diminishes a lot of the story for me
Idk about that, if anything they turn the story into an all time classic.
They never add special effects upgrades where they're actually needed.
And where are they needed?
Well i should say the prop did.
The new boat effect was a little more realistic looking and about the best part of the update besides the spaceship.
i prefer the original rutan design
Nope. The shipwreck was the only improvement. As always the animatiors put too much movement into the mix. I never had a problem with the original, it looked REAL. It glistened like wet seaweed and slime. Go on, try doing that with a computer.
The new one is a practical puppet…
If I want to watch classic Doctor Who, I'll watch classic Doctor Who.
Wow. The original effe ts are better than the 2024 verdion
"effe ts"? "verdion"?
@@ACtheLegend Whoopsie. I thought everyone one would understand my comment, which is written in Low Gallifreyan
@@Ettrick8 ah, it's been 375 years since I took Low Gallifreyan at the Academy, I'm a bit rusty.
The Rutan “Mothership” doesn’t look that impressive. The Rutan appears to move like a biped, and nobody still hasn’t realised (since 1977) that the Lamp in the Lamp gallery is far too small. It’s virtually the size of a domestic lightbulb.
The original footage looks cleaner
I honestly am disappointed with the updated effects
I personally think they should have drawn influence from octopi
I know it's more jellyfish inspired but it makes sense to draw influence from a similar creature
The octopi inspiration was used for the new Nestene’s on Terror of the Autons.
@@DanTheMan2150AD I mean for the movement
I know octopi were the inspiration for the nestene (and I really hope they fix the effects of power of kroll)(they also inspired the zygon design)
And I know rutans are jellyfish inspired
But honestly having the rutans fling it's tentacles up the staircase and hall itself up would feel more realistic
I know it's sci-fi and not real but the way they have it basically floats the way they had it do, just takes me out of the story, at least with movements inspired by other sea life I could accept it more
eh, the original electrocutions are more punchy. It's cool that they did this but I wish they saved the buget for episodes that really need it. It'd be cool to see them fix the lighting in the 5/6 era, everything is so over-lit. Still cool, but glad you can turn it off.
I'll take the original effects over the new ones anyday
1977 always wins😂
The added light of the lighthouse is nice. Otherwise this is entirely pointless and inferior to the original, as these things always are. The Dalek Invasion of Earth was the only good one, and they never attempted another black & white story again for some reason.
I disagree, pretty much all these new effects are vastly superior to the original.
Ah a Luddite😂
Many many people, notably nearly every interviewee who actually worked on the programme in some capacity, have expressed an interest in seeing what could be done with modern technology, (some of those have even been involved on these updates), so if It can be done why not try it? Hardly pointless. Granted some re-dos work better than others but it’s a nice extra and the originals are always there if you can’t handle it. A lot of us parting with cash like having the option.
As for the b/w stories there’s still 5 seasons to come. Personally I wouldn’t be keen on something like that ghastly Daleks re-edit but I can see a few stories where a touch up in the vein of DIOE would be interesting.
Oh CoME on! WhErE'S tHe SpeCiAL EfFeCts foR MaX HeAdRoOm in ThiS VeRSiOn?!
(Oh yeah, us Yanks know what I mean. XD)
I sort of wish they’d put that clip in the blu ray extras. After all, Doctor Who is the only reason it was preserved in the first place.
