Roller Coaster Tycoon is really enjoyable on an old CRT computer monitor!

  • So I've been feeling the itch to dive back into some RCT lately, and I decided to add a little twist to my revisit to a childhood classic by spending some time playing it on some of my vintage computer hardware, namely my cute little Sony Trinitron 100ES CRT from 1999.
Even though I have some much more powerful computer monitors in my arsenal, I've been really enjoying this playthrough using some period-correct hardware to the era in which the game was released.
Although I can definitely say that a lot of my enjoyment of this experience also comes from the fact that RCT is simply a splendid game to play, with pretty much the most stellar blend of old school charm and shockingly deep gameplay. Along with showing off a bit of footage captured from my monitor, I also take you on a quick tour of a few of the parks that I have built in the past.

Great vid! Really been enjoying your channel. I have an iMac G3 that I use for this kind of retro pc stuff; it's convenient having the computer built into the CRT!

Oh man I'm a bit envious of that, I would LOVE to find a G3 for my collection to mess around with! The school system I was in was mostly Windows-based from middle school onwards but all during elementary school it was Macintosh, our library probably had one of every single color G3 available. Two games I vividly remember playing on them were Bugdom and Troggle Trouble Math.

Great stuff. Loved the genesis speakers, your model M is pristine and that sony monitor looks great!

Yeah that Model M easily has to be my favorite part of everything shown here. Even though it's such a workhorse for me, I always make sure to pull all the keycaps and give the entire thing a good wash at least once a year to keep it looking as spiffy as possible!

Great video! I was 13 when this game came out but somehow I've never played. I have a nice 17" Dell CRT monitor (model E770s) from 2001 and I will be playing this game very soon and for the first time on this monitor. The PC speakers I have to go with it are the Altec Lansing AVS300. These are the same model of speakers that I used with my PC in the early 2000s and I recently found them new in box for a great price on Ebay. They are great PC speakers. A few games I love playing on CRT PC monitors are Jazz Jackrabbit, GTA 2 and Deus Ex. The most modern game I've played on a PC CRT monitor was Crysis 2 and that game looked incredible on my E770s.

Ahhh the E770s, I remember distinctly the sea of them in my middle school's tech lab and hearing the collective "tik-THUNKtsssss" of them all going through their startup degauss at the beginning of every typing class! Pretty much every monitor was a Dell in my school system and from my memory I do recall them being pretty dang good for a basic monitor.
I'm going to talk about it more when I do a video on that huge Samsung monitor, but funny enough I think my absolute favorite thing to put on PC CRTs is an Xbox 360 through VGA. Every time I hook mine up to that Samsung I'm completely blown away by how razor sharp and vibrant it looks. I've been playing through GTA IV's story recently and even though the game runs so much better on my Series X, I can't stop playing it on my Samsung simply because of how stellar looking it is.

Awesome setup and model-m. I would love to have a little setup like this but all I have is an iMac G3 I got from a thrift store.

We definitely have the inverse problem from each other, because so far a nice cheap thrift store G3 has been eluding my grasp for years now!

I would love to have a retro PC build for stuff like that, but unfortunately I live in a single bedroom with a pretty limited income so my space is pretty limited.

That's totally understandable. There's a lot of equipment in my collection that I would love to be able to use more often, but there's only so much stuff that I'm able to have set up in this little 10x12 foot room at any given time.
Don't let a relative lack of funds get you down though! Through a little combination of patience and luck, there still is a bunch of vintage gear out there that you might be able to acquire for very little cost, if not free!
