Steve's Assorted Stuff
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ต.ค. 2010
Featuring the various video projects filmed by me, Steve! I'll mostly be featuring rambling quasi-scripted nonsense regarding some of the interesting things that have passed through my hands over the years. Could be an old TV, could be an obscure gadget, could be a neat automobile, could be an item of sentimental meaning. Who knows what I'll feel like recording! Watch, enjoy, question what I do to waste my spare time, all good stuff.
Star Castle - My favorite game for the Vectrex (and my favorite arcade game too!)
I've been wanting to make this one for a long time! Star Castle is a vector game originally released in the arcades by Cinematronics in 1980, and then later received a home port on GCE's Vectrex game console. Ever since acquiring my first Vectrex and grabbing myself a multicart, this game immediately took hold of my interests and quickly became my favorite title on the console!
And much to my surprise, after finally getting to visit the American Classic Arcade Museum located within Funspot up in Weirs Beach NH, I found out that they have a real original Star Castle cabinet! After spending time with this machine, I knew I had to put a video together to talk about this game. Please enjoy a ton of vector-y goodness with this deep dive into Star Castle!

The Radio Shack Armatron - One of the coolest toys from the '80s and a surprising mechanical marvel!
มุมมอง 65114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Here's a fun little blast from the past! Ever get to play around with the Armatron? This robot arm hails from the golden years of Radio Shack, back when they were churning out the absolute coolest toys and gizmos imaginable. Seriously, go take a look at one of their old catalogs from the 1980s and try not to drool over all the neat stuff they had to offer at the time. Perhaps one of the most we...
CRT Spotlight - The Sony KV-9PT50 - The Mini Trini!
มุมมอง 21Kหลายเดือนก่อน
So the other day I finally fixed the worn out laser in my ceramic white PlayStation 2 slim model, and jeez what better way to celebrate the return of its ability to read discs again than by making a video about the television it pairs beautifully with! Check out this little Trinitron, the KV-9PT50! Designed for use in locations that most other televisions wouldn't have an easy time fitting into...
The Casio CMD-40 - A full television remote control crammed into a wristwatch!
มุมมอง 893หลายเดือนก่อน
Ever notice that neat little Casio watch that I've been wearing in a bunch of my videos? Yeah I've been hiding something really cool right in front of you this entire time. Here's a quick little video showing off my Casio CMD-40 remote control wristwatch. During the late 1980s through the 1990s Casio was all about shoving different wild features into their line of digital watches, and sitting n...
CRT Spotlight - The Panasonic CTH-1900 - The finest example of a classic knobby woodgrain television
มุมมอง 3.7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Remember how in my last CRT Spotlight video I spoke about how I view my Sony 24FV300 to be the one set that I would keep over all others in my collection? Well yeah, that was my conclusion if I approached the question rationally. I am an emotional creature though, and the problem is that I am so deeply in love with this classic Panasonic tube television, even though it is more limited on featur...
The Atmos Clock - A striking timepiece and scientific marvel - It has the power to wind itself!

Here's a rather special item from my collection of assorted stuff- my beloved Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock. This stunning piece of brass, glass, and scientific marvel I received as an heirloom from my late Grandfather, and hidden within its design is a mechanism that, to those who do not know the secret of the Atmos, appears like it could possibly be a perpetual motion device! This clock posses...
CRT Spotlight - The Sony KV-24FV300 - Perhaps one of the best CRTs I own?
มุมมอง 3.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Hello to you all! The inspiration behind this video came from a hypothetical scenario that one of my friends proposed to me. Theoretically, if I were stranded on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere, out of the 40-some-odd tube televisions I own, what would be the one that I would want to have along with me to keep me entertained? Ignoring the dilemma of figuring out how I am going to gen...
The Buick Reatta - General Motors' sports car of the future (from 35+ years ago!)
มุมมอง 1.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
This one has been a long time coming! Time to show off one of the rarest and easily most obscure CRTs in my collection- and the car that it is attached to! The Reatta was Buick's flagship sports coupe released during the late 1980s that was purposed to get the youthful public interested in what Buick had to offer- even if half of their lineup seemed to cater specifically towards the older crowd...
CRT Spotlight - The RCA Console TV - The television that everyone's grandmother owned
มุมมอง 68K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello once again! I've been wanting to feature this big hunk of wood and glass for a while now, and here it is- this is my RCA Colortrak 2000 wooden console CRT television, dating back from 1988. Or really, this television could have been owned by pretty much every single one of our grandparents back in the day, because this is just the type of TV they all owned! So here's a gadget that I myself really love, but for some reason I find it baffling that not too many people really talk about. This is the Magnavox Odyssey², released in 1978 during the second generation of home video game consoles. Initially competing with Atari's 2600 console, the Odyssey² faced tough competition with the release of the much more powerful Intellivision and Colecovision syst...
CRT Spotlight - The Sony KV-1207 - A classic woodgrain Trinitron from 1982!

Hey everybody! Here's another CRT Spotlight for you, featuring this lovely Sony KV-1207 that I regularly use for a lot of my video consumption of stuff hailing from the 1980s. Obviously being that this television itself was built in 1982 and has the aesthetics to match, it certainly makes for a wonderful display for old movies on VHS and RF-only game consoles. I've been wanting to make a video about this thing for quite some time now- really ever since I first acquired it to be honest! Game Room Tour - September 2024

I have one in a box and several carts for it. I remember the commercials for it back in 84, it looked better on TV. Overall I'm glad we never got one back then.
An underrated game for sure.
Only the rich grandmothers owned one. Our TV was on a rolling cart.
14:50
Did you just say Tits?
I love the classic arcade sounds pumping out of those early sound chips, takes me back to a magical youth spent in arcades during the dawn of the personal computer age,
11:16 i found the cat!
Daisy has been spotted! I know sometimes I'm a bit more obvious with her cameos, however I have some ideas on how I can really hide her in some of my upcoming projects!
My mom had this exactly console TV. We just talked about her old TV a little while ago. Wasn't but a couple years ago she had to replace her TV. I had one of the first RCA flat screen CRT.
It was one of my favorite games. I even recreated it in Little Big Planet. Rather challenging to do, but does look like a pixelized arcade game. I it doesn't have everything the arcade has, because I was making it from like 30 years of memory. Unfortunately now, no one can play it as the servers were taken down. But I did make a video of it way back when it's on my rather eclectic youtube channel.
I would really want to see a video on the RCA VCR. Speaking of which, What model is it? I have a Panasonic PV1210 which looks exactly like it, yet I can’t find info on that specific model of rebranded RCA that you have.
*For you Vector graphic and Vectrex noobie:* The staircase jaggies you see in this video DO NOT EXIST when you observe it right in front of you. Vector graphics have NO JAGGIES.
I tried as hard as I could to get some accurate video of these machines with my camera, but CRTs are such annoying things to film as accurately as possible. My footage here does not do these monitors justice compared to how good they look to the naked eye- in person, these things appear almost magical!
The AI video description keeps saying "they" when there is only one person. Steve.
AI just weirds me out, you should see some of the nonsense it feeds me as suggested replies to comments on my videos (I think my viewers would prefer it if I was the one talking to them, not a computer!) There's only one on my channel for now (excluding my cat Daisy of course when she makes her cameos!), but I have a couple ideas for involving some of my friends with my video content in the future!
Wir haben uns vor einem Monat eine Atmos gekauft. Diese Uhr ist wunderschön und wir erfreuen uns jeden Tag an diesem Kunstwerk.
I bought a Matsui crt tv from ebay, and it came destroyed. I've given up on crts and gone with a retrotink 5x lol.
Love your presentation! Subbed. What is the video game cab that is encased in acrylic in the arcade?
Funspot has a few different machines encased like that scattered throughout the building, double-checking my footage here plus some of the clips I didn't use in the final edit it looks like that particular room has cabs for Asteroids, Joust, and Gauntlet scattered around the room (there is a fourth machine located across from the wall with all the Pacman cabs, but I don't have a clear enough shot to ID the game unfortunately. Someone with more familiarity with Funspot's collection could probably fill me in regarding what that cab is). Most of these machines have some sort of historical significance, such as having been one of the development machines produced by the original companies. Hence why they are on the floor strictly as display pieces!
I went to Funspot last spring and specifically sought out and played the Star Castle machine. I’m not sure how old the footage was that you used but the machine was in horrible shape. The sound didn’t work, the overlay had slid down, the display was dim and faded and the game did not play correctly and was basically inoperable. Anyway, I picked up a Vectrex last month and getting my Star Castle wooo hooo! I’m gonna get the multi cart and a reproduction overlay for Star Castle…my favorite vector game! Thanks for making the video.
The techs at Funspot must have overhauled the machine at some point after your visit, because it's in great shape now! The footage of the Star Castle cab in my video here was filmed on October 12th and December 11th of this year. Hopefully their restoration work holds up for many years to come and you'll be able to visit again and play it in the condition that it's in now. In the meantime, absolutely have fun with your Vectrex! Glad you enjoyed my video 🙂
Cool thanks for the info I was disappointed in the condition of the machine as well as many other units there on my last visit. They seemed to be focusing on the new pinball lounge instead of the “museum” at the time. Most of the machines were in a condition I would not even have powered up and taking coins. I was there in April of this year and the Star Castle machine was garbage. The walls would even reappear after blasting them and the overlay had slid down. Most of my favorite games were in similar condition and it was kind of sad. I got a Vectrex tho!
After a bit of sleuthing, I discovered that Funspot's technicians must have just finished overhauling their Star Castle cab just days prior to my first visit on October 12th. I found another video tour of the arcade that was supposedly filmed the weekend prior, and the spot where Star Castle was located (between the Galaxian and Space Invaders cabs) was empty! I'm really glad my first visit timed out so well, where I was able to experience such a freshly restored machine. I can assure you that that particular Star Castle cab is in fantastic operating shape now! It is a bit sad seeing the state that some of the machines in ACAM's collection are currently in, although it is 100% understandable considering pretty much everything in that one room alone is at least 35-40 years old and is bound to have some sort of age related issue creeping up on it. Between my two visits here that took place only two months apart I did notice that a handful of machines had fallen out of order (but with more or less an equal number of the broken machines from my previous visit now functioning again). I'm sure maintaining that collection for daily public use is a unfathomable task for the techs there at the arcade.
I mastered this game on MAME. Eventually, the cannon doesn’t turn. It just blips to position when you cross the screen borders. The sprites also launch instantly and pursue super aggressively.
I can make it to about level 4 or so before the Star Castle pretty much says "yeah, I've had enough of your nonsense" and just shreds through my reserves of extra lives. I love how aggressive the game's programming gets as you advance through it!
Fake unit it's not authetic.
Brilliant video. I love the Vectrex system. There are very few pieces of hardware from that era that have aged quite as well. The arcade machine footage at the end of the video hit all my nostalgia nerves, it was like Geek ASMR for me. Thank you TH-cam algorithm for bringing me here. Peace, love and happy holidays from the UK.
I debated including that long take at the end but I'm really glad I did. The sights and sounds of this machine are quite incredible and I figured someone out there would enjoy watching me play through a couple rounds of the game! Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed my video!
Wherher you played Starcastle or not, you knew the arcade had one because the deep sounds echoed throughout the crowded arcades.
That pulsing droning sound of the machine sounds so intimidating compared to other machines, it's one of the features I love about that cab!
I had one of these tv's at home when I was a kid we used it till about 2019, when we donated it to a family we knew
The accuracy that you described calculates to 0.56 seconds per day, which is very impressive. I am now trying to beat that. I recently acquired my Atmos clock, in a state of gaining 19 seconds per day.
1:07 Cat seems unimpressed. As for myself, it reminds me of the first time I played Super Mario Bros :)
I just got one out of a clean out what’s it worth?
It was my favorite arcade game as well. There's a strategy that, if you know it, makes it a pretty easy game to show off on. I happened upon a kid who showed me the secret, and I basically owned the machine at my local arcade, called Galaxy World, just outside Chicago. This was early to mid 80s.
My actual grandmother had this exact TV!
I never liked space shooters (still don't) but I love Star Castle. Spent hours at my local Pizza Hut playing it.
It’s basically radial yars revenge rather than linear
I remember playing this at the general store on the edge of Carlton township Michigan. It was a rare game even when video games were in. Thanks for the memories.
Not gonna lie I really wish TVs still look like this especially the ones in the background I was born in the year 2000 so I had the tvs in the background a long with VHS tapes star wars Batman and a N64 and original Xbox seeing videos like these are really nice to watch cause it reminds me of the good days but it also makes me sad cause things aren't what they use to be houses don't have carpet or box TVs the shows aren't fun and enjoyable anymore and I honestly wish tv shows and commercials were in low quality again my great aunt had a tv just like the one in this video anyways I'm looking forward to seeing more retro technology videos from you keep it up
Was the picture really that bad and fuzzy back in the day? it's tough to remember. Or does it look that fuzzy because it's a recored image that we're watching on a computer? meaning that it would look clearing if we were actually in the room. Just wondering.
I love the styling of the 300 and 310. But I also love audio. My main tower speakers are 48" tall, with a midrange-tweeter-midrange over two 10" woofers, and weigh in at 110lbs ea. Then I have two 12" subs. The first thing I do with ANY T.V., whether my low hours KV-27, or my Plasma, is hit Mute in favor of the HiFi...
I wish i had a dollar for every RCA tv that i delivered
Perkele from Finland. I have played a similar game before on PC decades ago, but I don't remember the name of it. As I remember it, at the center is the base surrounded by a ring or a few of them. Shoot the rings to get on to the base to destroy it, then repeat with more rings. Eventually the base moves to the right side of the screen. Anyone here know this?
And found it myself: BattleStar from 1994. Check it out!
Wrong! I had an old 80's Motorola Quasar TV. Top and sides look like solid wood, but they are particle board covered with wood grain veneer. The front is molded plastic. Even your grandma could have told you that! I know cause I repurposed one, trashed the guts, removed the top, cut the base with a hand saw just above the bottom "molding" and attached the top to the trimmed base to make a LCD TV base/platform/stand. Looks great and it is unique, strong and solid.
I remember the time of arcade machines and the places (mostly bars) that had them. I even remember the smells there... The increasing speed and sound of the star castle sounded so menacing lol
I love the angry ramping up buzzing of the machine, it's so much more evil sounding compared to the doot-doot doot-doot soundtrack that Atari used for their Asteroids machines. Star Castle definitely makes itself known in a crowded arcade setting for sure.
oh so this is what inspired Facepunch's Chippy
I have the 1989 model. It was my daily driver from 2017 til now. I still use it sometimes.
My parents had a zenith console 1988 until 2002. It had "stereo" sound, lol....great TV. Wood. Mom had doiley under the vcr
6:50 favorite movie of all time - was glad to see it on the CRT just like I remember
Thanks for the video Steve .. Im picking up a Vectrex on Saturday .. So im a VecVirgin lol .. Back in the day i had no interest as i had and still have the C64 :) ... Regards Steve ;)
Congrats on scoring yourself one of these fantastic things! I always like to tell others who haven't seen a Vectrex in person before, videos of them operating simply do not do the console justice for how good they look with your own eyes. The effect is almost magical.
@StevesAssortedStuff 😉.. always loved vector graphics. It comes with 5 boxed games, too. I've got a PiTrex already . Im looking forward to Starwars ..

I'm totally not flaunting that I actually own three of these things 😆 (technically four, but one is just a parts console)
@@StevesAssortedStuff It was a cool reveal. Then YT goes and shows me a 36" color vector in some guys arcade room. Crazy.

Bravo, nice dive in :)
Living the dream! I know these sorts of tvs are looked down upon by CRT purists, but I for one always preferred these old consumer sets. Been looking to get one of these for my living room for a while now, just haven't been able to find one yet...
