    Hiiiii
    Some nerdy suggestions to prevent the rot from happening again!
    -A well fed plant is better at tolerating stress, and therefore less likely to rot. Your mix is very very low in nutrients, there's nothing wrong with that but you gotta supplement basically as well as if you were growing your plant in a semi-hydroponic setup. Make sure you have all the macro and micronutrients, and combine them with humic acid for better results.
    -Cultivating a healthy microbial life is your soil is also a good way to prevent root rot. In Canada we have a product that's really good for that, it's called Dr Marijane. The brand Microbial Mass also makes good products.
    Good luck 🤓

    I just have all my plants including my Thai Constellation permanently living in a similar perlite moss mixture, with a layer of leca at the bottom. I just feed them all hydroponically, with some hydroguard for beneficial bacteria. I had my Thai Constellation in soil for the last 3 years and she grew at glacial speeds (aka not at all). Since moving her to a leca-perlite-moss situation, she is exploding in roots and pushing a new leaf now (I believe it's been < 1 month since I did it). She really loves the perlite, who am I to argue? That will be her home forever.

    Have my Thai planted in Pon substrate for about 6 months now and she loves it, Planted it in a self watering planter and keep a close eye on the water level meter to ensure roots don't dry out. So far absolutely no issues. Plant is loving life growing very well.

    fern!!! i honestly think you should train this up a wooden pole/plank. i saw on instagram someone who has their TC floating above the soil with only the areal roots in soil. i think it would be a great way to avoid root rot getting out of control as it would be noticeable early on AND it’s look cool too. i’ll add the video in a reply.
    or just trade this plant for another thai constellation to see if that plant has better genetics lol

    I think unless it’s rotting you should just leave it alone, the stress of constantly moving and being un-potted is probably not great for the roots especially with so few of them. I let all my Monstera get fairly root bound before I mess with it at all and I’ve never had any rot. Hopefully you can just leave him be now and he’ll love the potting mix!

    If you have issues with rot, I would HIGHLY recommend growing it in Leca in a semi hydro environment. I don’t grow all of my plants in Leca, actually most of them are grown in soil, but I grow my Albo monsters in Leca since the day I got it almost a year ago. The amount of roots that it has grown is absolutely amazing and in less than a year it’s pushed out 3 new leaves for me! I don’t give it any extra humidity and I live in the north east of the US. It just lives in my bathroom about a foot away from the window and it has been thriving in Leca. Again not all my plants have been successful transferring to semi hydro but monsteras do really well from my experience.

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It did soooo well in LECA the first time... but one instance of forgetting to add water was a death sentence 😢 I tried putting it in LECA for a second time and it rotted within a few days. Not sure why I have bad LECA luck like that sometimes.

    You are not the only one who struggles with thai! My plant rotted so many times and I have had it in almost every medium also. The last time I grew roots in perlite exactly how you did and this time I added moss into my aroid medium to regulate moisture when I repotted it. One thing I got from this plant over owning it for a few years is that it's particular with watering. If you miss 1 and water sparingly you are done for and you are starting months of hard work over again. I set a reminder on my phone for my finicky plants so that there are no slip ups! This variety is not as forgiving as other types of monstera! My albos can go 2 weeks without water and be fine lol

    The leaves on your thai look super healthy! i recently purchased one about a week ago and my mix im using is coconut husk, perlite, and coco coir. I was advised by the seller that these plants so not like soils that have potting mixes in them because they are prone to root rot. they also advised against using any kind of moss in the soil mixtures because they retain too much moisture.
    keep up the good work! these plants are very picky about their growing medium and watering but once you figure it out youll be rewarded very nicely! im sure im gonna be on this same journey with you here soon!

    It looks great, best of luck with this temperamental Thai! If it ends up rotting again, consider keeping it in whichever re-prop media you use! Soil doesn’t always have to be the end goal - plants can live happy, healthy lives in moss or (my favorite for Thais) a perlite + milled moss mix. I’ve had to do this with a couple of my plants that seem to just HAAAAATE an Aroid soil mix. 💚

    Try just potting the roots in and keep base stem sit on top of your mix. Can also incorporate a stake to keep it up. In time it’ll stabilize itself since it’ll be well rooted in the soil mix.
    You can also maybe try putting pon or leca wt bottom of your pot, and layer it with your soil mix and top it with pon.

  • @amperstandheart
    @amperstandheart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think it could do really well in a loose mix! I'm a smidge confused by them being potted up together though. I thought your whole point of splitting the plant was to have a 'backup' but if they're in the same pot, won't they both just rot or grow together? I would have thought to do two pots- even in the same mix they would at least be separate??

    Two things might help you and this beautiful Thai Constalation. 1, it needs to be in a net pot for air circulation for the roots to increase growth and not rot, untilyou have a mature plant. Holes or openings on the side of the pot as well. 2, I notice you keep watering your plants straight from the faucet. Tap water is fine, but not without letting it sit uncovered for at least 24 hrs so the chemicals in the water can evaporate, before watering your plants. Hope that helps so you can continue to see amazing growth.

I had one doing beautifully in leca for about a year and then all of a sudden, with no change in routine, the roots decided to start rotting. It's frustrating when you can't even figure out what caused it. I propagated the heck out of it and eventually it became 11 plants that are all in potting mix now. I'm trialling growing plants long term in perlite too and so far so good.

    I rooted my two Thai Constellations in perlite after they both rotted and it worked SO great! They have so many healthy roots now. Trying to work up the nerve to put them back in a chunky soil but really scared of them rotting again. 😜

    Just purchased a small Thai Constellation cutting in leca. I am now horrified after learning about your roller coaster root rot experience. The best of luck to you, from Alberta :)

    So I found rot on my Thai and pretty much had to cut it all off there was one root left. I watched all your videos and I feel your pain. Would love to see an update on this babe!

    Fern, i have a big Thai and never had rot! I have it a bit higher in the soil so the chonky stem is sorta out of the soil and only roots are under (i think yours is a little too deep and might be why your getting rot) and then i have it being held by a moss pole, In clear pot.. I dont water it until i see little to no moisture on the pot walls! :)

    I try and put the plant more in the center so as to not be close to the plastic side which I find hold some moisture.

    Put living moss as topping…i found they need higher humidity than the albo. Mine putting up leaves almost non-stop, though I put them outside and water them almost everyday.

    i’m scared this will rot again. when moving from moss to soil, you always want to remove alllll of the moss before moving to soil.

    I have always had problems with root rot when i rooted my plants in moss and then put it in substrate (there was always moss left on the roots which then started to rot in the soil. Now I only root my plants in water, and have never had any problem again.

    I use horticultural charcoal for my plants that live in perlite. It keeps them from getting algae.

    Seems too me it’s potted too deep, the roots are at the bottom an no where for them to grow down. I hope it makes this time. 😀

    I have grown many many of these in my house to sell and pay for some of the costs of my own hobby (plants and reptiles and birds hehee 🌚) I tell you try ORCHID BARK.
    I promise you that works!
    Ad just a little potting mix with it and forget leca and perlite.
    Also if you guys have problems with your philodendrum pink princesses try this, you will see the defference my fellow botanical betches 💘🌱🌱
