Fun Fact: I died several times while working on this, but it turns out my purgatory is actually making meme videos.
Edit: People keep bringing it up, and it wouldn't bother me if they were correct, but they're not. Anakin stating: "The rumblings of a Civil War, fermented by planets attempting to freely leave the Republic..." is a perfectly valid use of the term "fermented" in the figurative sense as noted in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (linked below.)

I think there's only 2 images throughout this whole video and it's more entertaining than a lot of official star wars content put out today.
That zoom-in " . . . SURE." though when she suggests that he doesn't _really_ want to abolish democracy
The way Anakin was able to so clearly identify flaws within the republic but was unable to recognize the core practical issues of his own proposal (for example, how one should determine who is most suited to lead or ensure that the dominant voice has the wisdom to accept influence from others) demonstrates the dichotomy inherent to trying to better a system. It is always easier to destroy than it is to build, and so too it is always easier to identify flaws in an existing system than it is to design a system devoid of flaws.
There's also notable irony in the fact that Palpatines powers ultimately stem from being democratically elected on a platform that only existed to serve his goal of seizing power, meaning the "elective qualification" in the government Anakin ends up creating is still just being a power-hungry demagogue.
Although there is considerable room for a counter-argument where the boundary of Palpatines platform lies. He "organised" an entire state into existence, was at one point the leader of two governments (although the second government used the resources and preferred politics of polities that existed in the same fashion when they were part of the Republic, so there was little in the way of organising to be done). This would be grounds to consider him a superb candidate for emperor.
The counter-counter-argument to this is that he rallied these planets based on their mutual hatred of the common practices of the republic. That's not a raison d'etre for a peacetime government, someting Anakin considers a core aspect of good leadership, which in this case is something Palpatine didn't achieve. The Trade Federation is in so far only really a mongol horde.
And last but not least, the criticism that is specific to democracy as opposed to autocracy, that of a misalignment in the qualities needed to rule and the qualities needed to be elected, is still present in autocracies. The conceit of dictatorial power is that the dictator only has legitimate power _while he is actually in power_ - when he dies, there are technically two options: He selects an heir with the appropriate skills to lead, or his leadership staff competes for the position of the dictator (in the many forms of murder, blackmailing, intimidation, etc.). In practice it will always come down to the general staff competition, the heir just gets a headstart on making power plays. Unless there are some abstract qualities you can tie to the cutthroat measures I mentioned (and those I didn't), the only thing the transfer of power in a dictatorship selects for is the ability to neuter your opponents. We can see this express itself in the most common form of dictatorship being ones led by militaries, not because they're more qualified for solving problems like famine and brain drain, but because they are automatically always in a position to gun down competing branches of the government before they can make powerplays.
@@slyseal2091 In history this is often an issue with primagenature monarchies. While systems like the much-more-shortly-lived-than-commonly-attributed Wittangemot may help, they were still restricted to the relatively small group of aethlings, and such a small group may well have no one who is qualified. But in a dichotomy, full evaluation becomes harder the larger the group, and you are at that point selecting more for acting ability than governing ability. As an interesting side-tangent, JRR Tolkien, though enamored of monarchies, seemed later in life to realize this shortcoming. That however wise Aragorn may have been, in his line would inevitably rise "One like Denethor, or worse."
All this is to say nothing of the corrupting effects of power. We can again explicate a dichotomy: While in a system of strict primogeniture, assuming it is followed, there is no behavioral attractor whereing the supreme executive power attracts those already corrupt or succeptible to corruption. But in doing so we have eliminated any selection for any OTHER factor necessary for proper governance. Further, an heir who, however educated, grows up with those around him knowing full well that he shall one day have power, has their sense of empathy placed in great peril.
Exactly.
In fact, a republic governed by a wise philosopher king such as Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine is the perfect system in which the unlimited power is safely kept under check by the balanced maturity of this great statesman. The most suited leader is clearly the one that can ensure the safety and peace of the free and just Senator Amidala, and hence the core practical issue has been resolved, and be it by a fortunate turn of events in which such philosopher king is readily available and willing to sacrifice his love for democracy to take over the heavy burden of true absolute emperor.
@@professorhaystacks6606 But in case of Tolkien example, it is a weakness of the system, or the unavoidable entropy of humanity and the world? As, even if a new Denethor rise later on, it will be later, and considering the monarchice system robustness in the europian context we can argue thet it is may be much-much later then in a democracy where the whole system already questenable from the get go.
The other point came to mind is thet a leader have to be ideal or it is enough if it is sufficent? In a sense my question is thet having an unasusming monarch who most propably pretty close in temperament and intelligent for most of his subject is still better then a democratly elected leader who are prone to be more powerhungry, overly ambitious or just a puppet of the elits who helped him gain the office.

It pains my heart that a 3 hour long Anakin Skywalker's philosophical speech is still unreleased. Please make it a reality
I'd much rather watch a video rant of Anakin mentioning on why the Separatists is the perfect governing faction in Star Wars than anything shat out by Disney nowadays.
i unironically liked anakin philosophical speech. Untreated Autistim Anarkin is cool
"What if Jedi keep jumping or of windows around me?
Whatever, I'll burn the bridge when i come it."
That's gold. That's top tier writing. 6:18
6:27 I love how all the text is there for her response, but Anakin just cuts her off anyway lmao
The Thom Ashobbes pun was greatly appreaciated.
Also Daaved Hu'ume (David Hume), the Hut Thinker Locka (John locke), Isaibelin (Isaiah Berlin, I think) and others!
Oh yeah, and Pla'ato (Plato, obviously)
I mean his leviathan theory shit ( i mean did he want to create the third Reich ?)
Those were all the ones I caught as well, couldn’t figure out the last two.
Shue'nery'he is probably Henry Shue IMO no idea about the other one though!
@@marcusdesai506Mith'raw'nurodo is just Thrawn.
The fact that Anakin didn't have a normal upbringing but instead spent his youth and early adulthood with a knowledgable Knight like Kenobi yields acceptable credence to this portrayal.
Heart
I truly believe that Anakin didn't _miss_ all the Hints Padme was dropping
He was just interested in a spirited discussion more than _another_ person just wanting him for his body, like the jedi with their midi chlorian testing device
0:59 Ignores flirt, continues original, convoluted, bizarre rant. Based and philosophypilled
Padmé used flirt unfortunately anakin is a nerd, yet somehow she still got him
A true political savant, she improvises new strategies to secure victory against impossible adversaries.
Padme thought that speccing high into Charisma would help her flirt with Anakin, but in the end, it was her investment into Intelligence that helped her woo him.
Also she should have specced a little more into Endurance, because somehow she died from giving birth to twins in a highly medically advanced birth center.
That was *her* dichotomy.
This is true. My ex basically was telling me she wanted me in many many ways. And it didn't click until she literally moved my hand to her... on a date.
@@StarPlatinum3000 to be fair there’s an implication that Palpatine somehow used her life to stop Vader from dying. Which would be why he could tell she was dead when it happened in order to gaslight Vader.
@@jeremytitus9519 Which unfortunately is further evidence to Anakin's point here.
My god, these two somehow have more chemistry than they did in the movies. Wow.
Some day, their will be enough technology and manpower to enable the fans to reimagine ALL of the star wars trilogies as feature length movies. I suspect it will be a chaotic time, but it will likely produce some amazing gems.
okay, for real though this video is insanely well put together with a lot of real philosophical arguments from real thinkers. if i had seen this a year ago i probably never would have realized.
hats off to the writer.
this is literally my fav star wars content rn
I Love the fact that Padme while really..REALLY wants to have a deeper negotiation with anakin, she can pull of the actual conversation really well and offer a positive criticism, making their relationship truly beautiful
Slavery is a skill issue - Yoda
My most favourite line ever 😂
I think Yoda is supposed to represent Nietzsche 😅
@@stevencooper4422 I think Yoda is just a drug induced a-hole boss
@@stevencooper4422 Nietsche definitely didn't call slavery a skill issue. In fact under his idea anyone could be an Ubermensch, even a slave or a prisoner (not to be confused with the Nazi's Ubermensch, which is a very currupted and perverted version that is so distinct from the original idea its not even recognisable and frankly quite the opposite). All that is needed is the right mindset. Nietsche whould vehemently disagree with the notion that slavery is a skill issue. Yoda is just an annoying 4chan user, not someone like Nietsche.
@@jaspermooren5883 Since the video was satire I'm just loosely associating the concept of failure being weakness as Nietzsche lol
@@jaspermooren5883 Yeah, I made the 4chan connection, too. "green text" after all.
I adore your work. Each new video confirms in my mind your creativeness and skill, two qualities I honestly didn't expect when I first started watching. I hope you continue to make these and much appreciations for all the laughs!
I loved the names of the 'alien' philosophers. 'Thom Ashobbes' made me laugh out loud
"Twi'lek thinker Thom Ashobbes" has me rolling immediately. Dont make me imagine Thomas Hobbes dressed as Ayla Secura. I beg you
I was assuming the Star Wars was also male, but screw it I like your idea better.
You have no idea how starved I have been of another Anakin dichotomy rant. Thank you
I love the effort put into adjusting the philosophers names. Brilliant!
So this has turned into just an actual discussion of philosophy and the nature of governance.
Amazing.
The whole thing being a leadup to a play on that single line from Revenge is actually amazing.
i love the anakin referencing thrawn cause they are buddies and honestly even this version of anakin probably likes thrawn. The guy loves arts and philosophy and would happily engage with anakins thesis.
They're probably both autistic and it's awesome
Excellent video. Love how it’s both sarcastic and educational
These videos are getting so good
Looks like Palpatine's claim about jedi masters always throwing themselves out of windows had some truth to it...
Who would have expected it from Obi-Wan "suicide is not the Jedi way" Kenobi (he actually says that in Legends once)
I did not expect actual political science and philosophies in my SW shitpost.
That and Padme referencing Shue
This is a fucking masterpiece. I am so hooked on these, and you keep upping your game, like, my god. This kept on delivering throughout. Thank you so much for the joy
You're an absolute menace. This series is the best Star Wars content to come out for a very long time.
My wife will look forward to this when she is out of the hospital thank you for the video!!
I hope your wife recovers quickly and is not struck down by sadness.
@@sealsaregood5146or lightning fingies
Better watch out for Losdewiltuliv Syndrome. I hear it's the number one killer of former Jedi's wives.
She recovering from your thesis?
@sealsaregood5146 she got home last night and I'm showing here the video now.
Anakin's obsession with dichotomy is a subtle reflection of how he struggles between the Light and Dark Sides of the Force.
It ain't subtle. XD
One could say it’s a Dichotomy
i love that palpatine is basically the stand-in for Pericles in the Pla-ato digression
I'm really loving these videos where it's entertaining and also educational. Please do more.
Girls: Shall we retire to the bedroom?
Me: Does a full scale 5 hour lecture about retiring from work...
If it worked for the Chosen One...
Two weeks later: What, was she hitting on me?
I love that padme is disinterested at first but then completely engage with him
She's a keeper.
I love this series so much. Please never stop!
Seal I think you've done it
I finally ran out of reasons not to subscribe. This video is too perfect, and I've watched every film on your channel already. I can't fight this feeling anymore! Happy subscriber! Merry Like Button!
Unironically wrote better chemistry between Anakin and Padme than George ever could have
I love how this is part meme and part unironically what this scene actually should have been instead of teenage Anakin basically just going "Nah, I'm a fascist." Like, this does actually highlight how he genuinely values freedom itself but not democracy, it's crazily well-written. Half of this is definitely canon to me now and that's so fucking bizarre lmao And tying it all back in to his line in Revenge of the Sith was an amazing cherry on top. This was superb on every level, well done. And 3:54 was definitely the best joke lmao
I think the interesting thing that people miss from the original scene is not just Anakin going "oh, iI should be in charge because I'm the coolest". What he says is that only people trully fitting to rule should rule, by which he means Padme and Palpatine, the two people he trusts. He has extremely selfless and loyal even while (and probably because of) being a fascist.
"fascist"
Lol, ex-slave from desert planet dont like de facto oligarchy for Rich words like naboo. Faki fascist
anakin was a yarvinite
@@lordbuss Only that this isn't fascism, but rather Aristocracy as it was originally concieved by the ancient greeks.
@@friendcomputer5276
You actually think those things are mutually exclusive?
These are incredibly well made, and I love watching and showing these to all my friends, many of whom I imagine suffer as Anakin's audiences do.
I've watched this several times already and the mix of philosophy and memes still kills me
We cannot stress enough how much work in terms of research must have gone through that video just to make these jokes.
Salute to the madlad.
6:35 - She was trying to say "I don't think you are using the right expression". It took me 10 attempts to read that.
Here's a pro-tip - if you're on desktop, pause the video and use , and . (comma and period keys) to go forward and backward frame-by-frame.
I use that version as a joke so it took a minute to realize it should be cross normally
I almost died at "Next" 3:00
You description looks really thorough!! I like it
Star wars: The return of dichotomy
This isn't from _Backstroke Of The Antithesis?_
Having a list of sources for a 12 minute AI star wars meme is insane 10/10
tbf that's essay length already, not a very long essay but long enough to make a detailed point
