    I have a 1955 Plymouth 3 spd. I try not to shift into 1st unless at full stop. I believe it is because the transmission does not have synchromesh in first gear. Therefore you have to spin up the gears by double clutching to mesh the gears if not stopped when going down to 1st gear. Great car! One of my favorite Plymouths.

      yeah, full stop recommended before going into first. nice car!

      Sometimes my 1950 will clash gears when going from neutral to first. I found that if I go up to 2nd then into 1st that it doesn't happen.

    I stumbled on this video watching engine builds. I own a 48 Plymouth business coupe and I am currently re-building the engine. It is a 217 ci not a 218 ci Canadian block like yours so I am told. I noticed the union tag on the car, like you I am a firefighter (30years) in Virginia local 2801. You are doing a great job on the car. If I can figure out how, I will send a pic of mine. I recently picked up an overdrive 3 speed for my car. It will make it easier to keep up with traffic around here. Great videos

      @@partsandresto You can double clutch if you have to, to approximate the gear speeds for first. If you're under 5mph you can feel the gear and jam it into first quickly without issue. I have a 35 DeSoto i learned the hard way on, it becomes second nature very quickly.

    I love the '46-'48 Plymouth sedans. Just a classic '40's car. My father had one in the early '50's and often talks about it - bubble skirts, visor, spinners, and spats. There was also one for sale in my neighborhood on a corner by my bus stop in the '70's. It was always open, and my friend and I would sit in it. Love '30's-'40's cars.

    Glad to see it on the road again. Your shifting has improved greatly. In regards to downshifting, particularly to first while moving, research the double clutch maneuver. Maybe your Dad has done it in the past and can show you. It's not really hard but it is a technique that takes practice. Loved the gag reel.

    Great to see the Flathead out on the road again Dave! Thanks for the ride slong. As mentioned before, 1st gear is not synchronized so you have to be at a complete stop to go into it. (If not, I have a TH-cam video on how to replace the Cluster gear! 😉😉😉) Ride the clutch in second gear if you're still slowly rolling. Funny bloopers! I never get my intros in one take, either.

  • @lunchbox2784
    @lunchbox2784 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great job! U are becoming a pro with the clutch! If it’s hard to downshift to first gear, wait till you come to a complete stop before shifting into first. Maybe your clutch needs adjustment? A little lower idle helps with that on older transmissions as well. Is first gear synchromesh? Starting on a hill, you can put your right heal on the brake and feather the throttle with your right toes, or you can use the parking brake to hold your place and let it go as you let out the clutch and throttle up. Your practice is definitely paying off, well done!

    Hey! I have that exact same car! Mine has sat since 1964, but the engine is still free. I haven’t attempted to run it yet, I hope to get to it this winter sometime. Anyway, I remember a business trip to Philadelphia back in the 80’s when I was fresh out of College and on my first job. We arrived in the late afternoon and checked into our hotel and went to dinner. Afterward, I expected to go back to the hotel and turn in for the night. But the boss had other ideas. He, myself and another fresh recruit got into a cab and the boss said: “Take us to 13th and Locust!” The cabbie just smiled and said “Yes suh!” A few minutes later we arrived at an establishment called “All in the Family”. I have to say this was quite the experience for a country boy who was born and raised on the Montana prairie. We came outta there smelling like stale beer and cigarettes, but a good time was had by all, especially the boss who brought back one of the girls to the hotel.

  • @63lambretta
    @63lambretta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great job! My 1952 does 70 mph and will be even faster when I install a 1953 overdrive unit.
    You can roll through corners in second gear just fine. No need to drop down into first. You can drop it into lower gears if you raise the engine rpms, synchronizing it with the transmission mainshaft you will have less gear clash, which is the same principle as shifting without the clutch. Not something you want to do regularly but it’s a nice skill to have to limp home if you ever have clutch issues.
    Engine braking sucks gas $$$$ so it’s best used only in emergency situations!

    • @thomasroop7931
      @thomasroop7931 ปีที่แล้ว

      1948 Plymouths came with a 3.9 rear end and the after 51 the three speeds came wits 3.7 rear end. When you put the BW Overdrive trans in look for a flat spot on the third member and the gear ratios are stamped on there at the factory and 4.11 or 4.3 were for cars with Overdrive. I had a 1948 Deluxe in 1976 that I put the OD in and found out the engine would lug on a slight grade in third gear overdrive and that went away when I put 4.11 gears in the car, and it sailed really nice at 70MPH down Main Jet and I picked up a 70 MPH coupon from the CHP Officer going through Redding CA , when the speed limit had been lowered to 55. I noticed Daves engine seemed to be idling high and agree that makes it hard to bring it back to first without a full stop. Double clutching and synchronizing your engine rpm with the speed of the trans is a learned skill,

    Your type of shifter is called having “three on the tree.” First gear is not synchronized but for fun you can learn to “double clutch” to match the engine speed so you can downshift to first on the fly. Truck drivers used to have to do it for engine breaking.

    A good thing he isn’t drinking in San Francisco or Seattle! He needs to learn that there is no synchro of first gear! He has already damaged the transmission!

    Fun fact only 18% of drivers can use a standard transmission (in the USA)

    Pennsylvania? Definitely have a zombie problem. 1st gear isn't synchronized you have to double clutch down shifting into 1st. Nice car!

    The reason your car "doesn't like to go into first" is because it's a non synchronized transmission, you shouldn't be downshifting into first gear while you're moving, unless you double clutch the car

    Geezz.. isn't she idling a tad too much!! And I think you've smoothed out the gears a little!!

    Dont shift into first gear while moving. It is NON synchromesh. You will destroy the transmission. You must stop then downshift into first.

    You don't need first gear as often. There is plenty of torque in second
