      I’m considering buying a ‘51 Coronet for $5400. Interior is decent, dent in the door. Seems complete and not really beat up or rusted. It runs but needs a new brake master cylinder. Is it worth it? Not sure if I should pull the trigger and buy it but I’m really close to doing it.

    • @coronet51
      @coronet51 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnmorrison5502 Tough call, not being able to see it, hear it run, etc. May need a new master, but then how are the brakes all around, may need a complete job depending on how long that was done last, cylinders rust. If you think it's decent enough, that could be a little steep, might offer 3 grand and see how anxious they are to deal.

    My first car was a 1964 valiant w/a slant 6 three on the tree. The gear shifts are , pull towards you and up is reverse, stay pulled toward you and down is 1st. Push away from you and up is 2nd, and away from you and down is 3rd. I enjoy watching the old cars that bring memories of cars I and other family members had and see them run again. I'm retired after 38 years of spinning wrenches and wish I could find these old tins around here where even glass rusts on the east coast of Canada. I imagine you wish for a hoist on times when you have to do the horizontal wiggle.

    Reverse is towards you and up. 1st gear is forward and up all the way. If it's a gyro-matic then all you need to do is get up to 10-15 MPH then let off the gas and wait for a few years and the car should shift into 2nd. At 25 MPH depress the clutch and pull the stick all the way to the floor and your in 3rd. Once you get to a stop just depress the clutch and the car should go into 2nd ( if the force is strong with you). If your stopped on a hill then try to find 1st again. Good luck and enjoy that classic Detroit steel.

We had a jumper battery pack that had an oversize 12 V battery & a built in charger. This was back in the days when there were still some late 40s & early 50s cars still in use. Absolutely the hardest to get running were L head engines, Chrysler products, Pontiac L head 6 & 8, & the Olds 6. Never had any calls on the Packard or Hudson L head cars.

    Oh my cars twin !! About 56 years ago my uncle dropped off a 1952 Dodge Meadowbrook flat head 6, three in the tree. My uncle left it.
    My dad showed me how to drive that heap. There was a big hole in the floor where the gas pedle is. Maybe a beer can would fit. The post behind the driver was all rusted out under the frame. Had to have it screwed shut. Us highschool kids took all the chrome off, painted everything black and black n white wheels. Oh an a wolf whistle on the manifold intake. Knuckle breaker on the steering wheel. Man could it fly through them mud holes. And what's best is reverse ,peels rubber like wow! Leaf springs were sprung to one side. So I replaced it. Then it leaned to the other side. What do you want from a kid? I believe I still have the radio ,vacuum tubes, with Positive ground. When you cranked it over, boydid that sound bring back memories or cold days. Them plug wells flooded with water so bad it shut the engine down. Carry spare dry rag. It was so easy replacing the thermostat and water pump. Not like today's cars. I'm surprised that year was a good find. Better condition than my heap. Great video!!

    Very cool the dodge Meadowbrook was the brother to my first car the 52 Plymouth Cranbrook exactly the same! There is something to that throaty sound of those Flathead 6 cylinder engines love it, I milled the head at machine shop at high school, bought a new Offenhouser twin carb manifold , from Honest Charlie’s which used to be a huge catalog store back in the 50s ,60s and found a set of Fenton headers at the local junk yard, bought some green and white tuck-n-roll seat covers from Honest Charlie’s my Uncle Tom was a chef at a local restaurant, but a Jack of all trades! He did a right nice job of upholstering the front and rear seats! Could not find door panels so we bought several yards of White Naugahyde and cotton batting and made some right nice door panels! Then I bought some spray lacquer candy green from the local Schwinn bicycle shop, prepped the dash sprayed it candy green! Looked great with all the Art Deco chrome trim on that dash! Had dual exhaust, since the Fenton headers were two piece with separate collector’s using corrugated exhaust pipe from Pep-Boys , two Cherry Bomb glass packs & ran the pipes out the sides right in front of the rear tires! Very cool , and great sounding!!! My Dad paid $50.00 Bucks for that car, wish I had it today! Keep up the great work Derek! You crack me up!!

    If the vehicle has sat for a very long time, that water build up in the crankcase is most likely condensation from the weather that has condensed. Which you would want to drain out as the water turns the oil acidic, which deteriorates internal engine components as they run or sit in it. Just needs an oil change before running for too long 👍

    I loved this video, my favorite yet. When you got in to start the car, I could smell it. There is a very distinctive smell that these old cars have.

    • @justinstearns9723
      @justinstearns9723 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also depends on what the vehicle is. 80s-early 90s Ford pickups have a unique smell, my 91 F250 included. My older trucks, which are Chevys and IHs, have a sort of barn aroma, that smells like a combination of hay and old grease. That’s why I love old vehicles, every one is unique, unlike the cookie cutter appliances that roll off the assembly lines every day nowadays.

    I gotta tell ya, both our jaws dropped at the same time. I couldn't believe that bad boy started, and ran like it was a daily driver. You know, I love these videos because, these cars are cars I grew up with. You lift the hood and all you see is motor. I used to use a tomato paste lid cover to adjust my points after putting them in. That's just the way it was back in the day. The reason these cars start and run so good is because they were built with pride in the good ole USA. OK I wanted to let you know, thanks for the great videos and man, I love the cars and trucks you find and bring back to life, it's a shame all the cars that get crushed, like the crusher Camaro that was going to be crushed B-4 it was saved Keep them videos coming big guy, love them!!!!

      Yep, it was a Kool old car. She had the GyroMatic. I have had So many old rings. The oldest boy asked me how many Cars I had, I told him that I lost track in 1985 when I was driving a 1945 Dodge long bed pickup with a 318 in it. Right now I'm finishing up another 1946 Chevy pickup. She is setting on top of a 1995 Caprice Classic that used to be the Madison County Sheriff's interceptor.

    That’s the same straight six in our old 1950’s US of A, NAVY trailer welder. It’ll crank up every time with just a little squirt of starting fluid even after sitting all winter. We sometime idle it down to about 300 RPM, just for kicks. It sounds like a mean Harley twin V. Anyway, Sweet old power plant, and a sweet old vehicular.
