My grandfather bought a 48 Dodge two door with the fast back when it was new. It had Fluid Drive and I can remember riding in it as a kid and sleeping in the back seat. My dad borrowed the car from time to time and he told us of a time when he was stuck in the snow so he just put it in gear and got out and pushed it and got it unstuck. My uncle bought the car from my grandfather and then my uncle sold the car to my brother and then I bought it. The NJTP was going to put a spur in and they forced my dad to sell his farm and at that time we got rid of the car. It was a great car and we drove it through the fields of my dad's farm. My Dad owned a 1950 "fast back" Plymouth 2 door sedan. I loved that car It had the same engine as yours. Back in the day, they weren't fast or powerful engines, but you couldn't kill 'em. They just go for ever. Really like your video. Best of luck with "ole Betsy"!
She’s gonna need lead replacement in the gas. There’s a thing you can buy which is basically a lead fuel hose that as the fuel passes through the hose it picks up the lead to cushion the the impact on the valve seats! I seen one on a VW camper van, at a show. The guy said it works excellent!! Hope this helps bud!

(That was in 1962) Started out much as you have, doing the work myself and am happy to say I still own that car, tho with a 1954 Dodge flathead 6 engine in it now. I picked up a 55 Savoy and am going through it with rewiring the whole car, rear end freshening, brakes all around, and now the engine which spun a rod bearing and ate the crank pretty good. Bought another engine, and now I get to go through that using your previous vid's !

Dad had a black 48 Plymouth in the early 60s with the light 💡 on the hood 👍🏻🇦🇺he sold it later and bought a 55 Plymouth black with red trim . 👍🏻yes I grew up with 3 on the tree 🌲 got my license in 73 . Old school MOPAR for life . 👍🏻🇦🇺🇨🇦🇺🇸.

Just get a schematic and do point to point wiring. Worked just fine for me. Used wires from Lowe’s, get the right gage and a color of your choice or close to original. Forget spending all the money. Get it back on the road. You got this.
I love these old cars. When they were built they weren’t made for speed... people weren’t in such a hurry back then. I’d love to have it for a daily driver....good luck with the restoration!

Great vid, had a 48 deluxe.coupe that I bought for$ 300 back in 1996 someone hot rodded it (well tried too) and covered the rear side windows with sheet metal and bondo to make it a 3 window coupe ( pulled those off). . . lots of fun and the dash was mint even the radio worked . . . should never have sold it . . still kicking myself LOL !
My 1950 business coupe has a floor like yours; but my rockers are bad also. Interior in rags. I got mine running, then went through the brakes and fuel system. Next is the body work. I look forward to following your progress. Good luck!

Had the same car in a Dodge version, found it in an empty lot about 1979. Had been driven until 1976, think I gave $175 for it. all it needed to run was a fuel pump, battery and brake job. Fun to drive (fluid drive). Radio even worked (if you pounded on the dash). Good luck.
Me and my brothers just inherited a 1948 Plymouth deluxe. On 15,000 original miles. But it’s been sitting in the sun for 60 years. Needs a lot of work.

Great job! Good to see you maintaining the original type flathead driveline. I drive a’52 club coupe with the original grey pinstriped interior as yours once had. A few frIendly UNSOLICITED suggestions, not to be taken as criticism! Go easy on throwing those doors open and closed. It springs the hinges, then the door skin can start popping and binding on the fenders. Please lubricate those hinges! Properly lubricated strikers and latches require VERY LITTLE force to fully latch. Slamming them is unnecessary and can crack the windows. Plus it’s fun to show your friends how well crafted the cars if that era were. You HAVE TO waylay car doors built after the 1970s so most people do it out of sheer habit. Also consider your tire choices well. There was no such thing as a radial tuned suspension in 1948 so the old skinny bias ply tires are like having powered steering compared to modern soggy radials. Yes they are slick and a death trap in the rain, but one doesn’t set out to drive a classic in the rain. Best of luck with the sheet metal fabrication!

(Among others, we spent many many hours restoring a '57 Lincoln Premiere; look it up if you have time.) I'm wondering about the sound of your engine -- it sounds to me like it shouldn't sound that way, like maybe the timing is out or the carb isn't quite adjusted right? I don't think it's just the sound of an old exhaust. Perhaps I'm wrong, but could you say something about that? I'm curious. Regardless, I'm a fan and look forward to your updates!

is it an actual manual transmission or a fluid drive? fluid drive you have to depress the clutch to go in first and then again into second gear which at that point it's in automatic transmission mode. I own a 48 dodge and a 46 desoto. same body and engine type as your plymouth. so i think it may have the same type of transmission or am I mistaken? great job so far and I'm looking forward to seeing more content
I'm confused about the ignition switch thing. It should be on when it's turned to the right and off to the left. If the ignition is left on after the engine stops you will fry the points and drain the battery or even worse... fire. Something is drastically wrong with the ignition wiring. I hope you remedy this asap. Refer to wiring diagram in service manual. Otherwise pull the battery ground wire after running. Stay safe and good luck.
I have a 47 Plymouth 4 dr that I’m street ridding …. The engine in mine reads 64,000 miles getting rid of the chasis have gas tank also ….. I’ll be outting the body on a 2007 hemi charger lower Tub

Im a mechanic, have been in the business since high-school. Worked my way up through the river industry EMD diesel training to being an engineer. Own a shop and a heavy equipment repair business. My point is that you have common sense, that's all you need to get a job done. Tools and experience will be unavoidable. You are officially a car guy though.
not gonna lie. that engine could have used an ounce of sandblasting and paint. its as rusty as the floor pan im guessing youll pull it again as you fix the body though
If you want to drive that car, even around the block. May I recommend you find a driver seat with a back. Any old seat will do. It's dangerous what you are doing. If you fall backwards, the car could be out of control and do harm. You will of course reupholster the original seats in due time. Until then I know it is almost irresistible not to drive it a little. The whole project is supposed to be fun. Don't marr it with an accident.

Did you check out “Inline Tube” for your premade brake and fuel lines?

It's getting there. You could use a start button across the coil wires. It will shutoff when pushed.

It does sound funny David! It has no exhaust right now for starters, but also, I can’t get it to idle slowly. Somethings up...

What happened to the quarter panels? Their missing.
Off temporarily, made working on the brakes easier and they needed new fender welt. Also need to do rust removal on the inside of them.

It could just be flipped around but you're right when you turn it back the opposite direction it should open the circuit and shut off

not gonna lie. that engine could have used an ounce of sandblasting and paint. its as rusty as the floor pan im guessing youll pull it again as you fix the body though
If you want to drive that car, even around the block. May I recommend you find a driver seat with a back. Any old seat will do. It's dangerous what you are doing. If you fall backwards, the car could be out of control and do harm. You will of course reupholster the original seats in due time. Until then I know it is almost irresistible not to drive it a little. The whole project is supposed to be fun. Don't marr it with an accident.
