Nah, I've heard the entire album and I was waiting for a NOT GOOD. I guess it wasn't so bad.
In fairness I like the Album but his critical points are hard to argue with. Dave does do a lot of speaking instead of rapping and the instrumentals are quite plain, after that it's just down to personal opinion on whether or not you like that style@@rohansalwan

@@hamzaashfaq6787 it was praised across UK because it was really the first rap album that broke into mainstream while talking about societal issues like it did (and right at the time where black minority issues in UK became a hugely pushed topic). I dont believe it won awards purely due to the music content of the album.
Compare it to To Pimp A Butterfly, since Psychodrama was often called the UK version of it... the beats, lyrics, flows. Dave is pretty good but it isnt even in the same league.
Everyone upset about his review but I feel the same. I don't understand who his target audience is. He has a boring monotone voice and he isn't some super lyricist like people say. A lot of his beats are terrible as well. Location and Streatham are hard but, funky Friday?

I think it's just the culture thing and how you grow up. A lot of US rap albums I don't really understand the foundation of the messages or where the desire for that said message come from. That probably why it gets a lower review.
Joshua Horwood but that wasn’t the problem with this album, the messages are all fine, it’s the actual song side of it that lets it down, nothing to do with what he’s saying

Given he's probably the most respected rapper in the UK at the moment, criticising his delivery is bizarre. We don't have this eternal, happy-go-lucky optimistic energy that all US rappers seem to have; Dave's 'flat', perhaps disillusioned delivery is a reflection of his reality, which has involved a lot of hardship at just 20-years-old. I don't think you understand the culture or the context surrounding UK rap. It's less rags-to-riches than in the US, and more rags-to-comfortable-but-not-exactly-balling levels of success for most.
Exactly, I don't know why he should deliver it any differently when talking about serious topics, serious tone for serious topics, simple as.
But it comes off like a six former trying to be deep, rather than clever. And the production is pretty vanilla too. Don't get the hype on this one. Skinnyman from years ago did this style so much better.

This is one of the greatest albums of out generation from a British artist. The way each song tells it's own story that corresponds perfectly with the larger story told by the entire album is a level of storytelling unmatched by any artist, let alone a 21 year old. Simultaneously he has an immense amount of bars and punchlines throughout each track that manages to be clever and not cheesy. How you can give it any less than a 9 or a strong 8 is beyond me, apart from the obvious culture barrier.
Nobodies ever written a cohesive album before? No doubt melon dropped the ball here, but don't act like dave is the first artist to write an album with running, cohesive themes.

The fact that this album went on to go platinum, be loved and respected by the whole uk grime scene and then win ALBUM OF THE YEAR goes to show how insignificant one person's opinion can be compared to the mass opinion of people who listen to Daves music.

I mean, he gave Godfather and Konnichiwa an 8 and 7 respectively but ok...Is what he says here not wrong? The beats on this are quite generic and the energy on many tracks isn't that great. Anthony has a penchant for liking more experimental and aggressive hip hop, and this just isn't that.

Elliott Charman you’re probably right that Konnichiwa would get an 8 if it was American but he touched on it in his Godfather review. He isn’t where Wiley is from. Can you blame him for not understanding the tongue in cheek comedy bars? You find comfort in music you’re used to. Objectivity is hard and I don’t think Anthony ever said he was fully objective. Just because he didn’t pronounce streatham correctly doesn’t mean he didn’t listen to it enough. There are songs I’ve heard 100 times where I still mishear lyrics. I think all of his criticism is valid. Maybe it deserved a 6 or 7 but by god if this album isn’t a little derivative instrumentally. I would argue there are several UK hip hop artists who are more exciting especially for someone like Fantano. Slowthai and Octavian are pretty hot names with promising work. Loyle Carner’s the next big thing imo and Anthony has acknowledged the guy has serious chops s even if the album wasn’t really his thing.

Not only does Dave give us his well thought out views on the uk’s political situation which comes from a dynamic and unique point of view, he also themes his album around an issue that a huge amount of people face, he himself previously being one of them

i feel like if you were more into and knew more about british culture and politics/social problems you would like this this album way better. that might be an obvious statement, but to not even mention a track like black, which is so fucking important and beautiful, you've just missed a lot of the points. i agree that the instrumentals aren't crazy impressive, and i can understand how someone who aren't that into uk rap wouldn't dig daves flow that hard. but what he talks about overshadows those flaws for me. in addition i really like his flow too, so for me this is at least a strong 7. so a hard disagree from me on this one bro. but cool to see ur review anyway!

In the uk yeah… “so much fun” was more enjoyable than this mid album. It’s cause a lot of people that go through their Dave phase haven’t heard real music yet. I suggest listening to the best rapper of all time, kendrick lamar. Dave sounds the same on literally every song and his flows are always dodgy.
I enjoyed this album from front to back and this is coming from someone who has never listened to Dave before. I was amazed at how great it was and honestly I don't think I have one skippable track.

Lesley was a lyrical masterpiece, and just showcased the versatility of Dave as an artist, the way he was able to rap about a difficult subject, in a way that was easy on the ears, whilst still painting a detailed picture.
For me this was the best album of 2019

A Brits award winning album of the year along with a mercury prize for leading song psycho, along with Dave having an undoubtedly incredible way with lyrics and wordplay, while also playing piano himself on every track and co producing every song and beat, all while delivering important messages about himself and the world around him, all In a debut album, I find it hard that you could even think of giving this album a 5

@@benjesterw Looking at Anthony's review and listening to the album, I can understand the way he thinks about the general instrumentals and humdrum flows, but I thought that fit the image of a "serious" album and the therapy session. I could be wrong though, that's how I justified them. And Dave's lyricism really has no contest.

I went into this album expecting nothing more than the same old beats and meh themes that permeate hip hop today. I found incredibly emotional and riveting lyrics and storytelling paired with minimalistic instrumentals that go perfectly with the lyrics. I'm sorry, this album is at least an 8, especially compared with some of the horse malarkey you rated above it.

You're right in critiquing Dave's often overly sentimental, somewhat corny delivery of a lot of the messages within his songs, though I think you do him an injustice not acknowledging all the clever word play in this album. I mean, if you're going to say that, within rap, style matters as much as substance, you can't then ignore Dave's triple entendres like: I got nothing for a fed, copper for your head

I don’t think this is a bad review, he just doesn’t understand the culture which is fine but the score is way too harsh considering it was easily one of the best albums of 2019

No one cares what some dweeby-looking PewDiePie subscriber called Jake Clarke who listens to cringe UK rap thinks about the most influential music critic of the past decade. Grow up and listen to real hip hop.
Like you've said earlier, A good message and vocals can be let down by bad beats/insturmental/flows. If you can't vibe to it, then you can't really pay attention to the message.
TheDAWinz Dave produced most of the beats on the Album and although they’re flat they’re perfect for the message and content of the songs. Sometimes when you do too much to the beat you don’t hear the words. With Dave you need to actually listen to what he’s saying cause a lot of it puts you into perspective of how people in the UK have been brought up. He has more wordplay and punchlines in that Album than I think most US rappers have in most of their content.

Dave’s songwriting skills are phenomenal, and examples of that shine bright throughout this album. He kind of reminds me of Sadistik tbh. The way he flows as well as his rhyme schemes just seem similar. He’s raw about his emotions on this project, or at least as raw as he can be given his guarded nature. I assume he’s guarded due to how aggressive he is on this record while opening up about his feelings. You can get the sense that he’s very protective of his emotions, which is also implied by the therapist skits throughout and that this is a really tough album for him to make. In a good way, though. He’s being very vulnerable, but also playing around with different flows, telling detailed stories, all while making everything rhyme and sound extremely polished. As for the beats, I thought they were quite good. They matched that vulnerable, aggressive tone that his bars are conveying with some nice switch-ups here and there to keep it interesting. This is just a really well crafted project overall, man. I feel like it fires on all cylinders and I’ll probably be listening to it a lot because it is very very very very very easy to listen to. Ima give it a 9, I think 5 is way too low

Personally this album to me is a great first album especially being delivered by a 20 year old rapper ! It has great depth and bravery to deliver songs over not beats that would be deemed classic or deemed radio ! It’s a breathe of fresh air to have a young artist speak there mind , deliver it So eloquently ! Many people won’t understand this album or won’t fully give it the recognition it deserves but being black and from the UK this album touches on a lot of subjects that are crucial and relevant right now ! Take that into consideration when your listening to this album Dave is a great young artist who charted number one for he’s first album ! That’s a achievement that will be celebrated ! It’s easy for Dave to make hit songs or radio songs like
Funky Friday but he chooses to push the envelope and touch on problems and insecurities in Are community .
