Is The Walmart Overpowered Gaming Laptop Really THAT BAD?

  • Walmart has decided to make their way into exclusive gaming laptops and desktops with the Overpowered branding. These laptops appear to be designed for esports games according to the box, however there are some weird design decisions made around the pricing of 1,000 dollars. The base model fell in price rapidly, so for the bargain price of 600 dollars, is this laptop really that bad?

    This is a tongfang barebones chassis usually found being used by boutique pc companys. Only thing OverPowered did was add RAM, storage and branding. This is why it has a great screen and keyboard. It's actually a very good Chassis normally found in expensive custom laptops. the strange matching of a 144hz and a 1050 is likely due to the OEM having way to many of the 1050 models lying around and sold them at a discount to OverPowered. The barebones nature of this product is key here. It's very difficult for a 3rd party company (OverPowered) to mess things up since they didn't really build it. The i7 1060 model for 799 is a great deal and not likely much higher than bomb cost for OP.

Very thorough analysis especially of the hardware and build quality that I appreciate very much. I'm glad I snagged it for that price as it is sold out now. I was a little concerned because of mixed reviews but those reviews seem to be more critical when it was being reviewed at its original price of $1699 where you could get more established brands with equivalent hardware for similar prices.

      The issue is it doesn't have the specs to drive the screen at that resolution, unless you're playing something ridiculously easy like CS. Putting a 1050 with a 144 Hz panel is just an odd combination. If they had put a 60 Hz panel in with a 1060 it would've been balanced much better. This is aimed squarely at 2 kinds of people: Those who want a CS box, and those who don't know any better.
      Dave Lee did a review of this as well, except with more games. 1080p high settings for Overwatch only got 88 fps. th-cam.com/video/idjy3AUmozY/w-d-xo.html
      If you hook up a 144 Hz 4K monitor to a desktop running integrated graphics are you going to have an amazing gaming experience just because you have a great screen?

I've gotten some really weird ass appliances from them. Afterward, I've written to the manufacturers about some things that I found stupid and the response has always been "oh that was a walmart specified manufacture and we have nothing to do with it after that.

    Just so everyone knows... These "Overpowered" laptops are rebrands of Tongfang laptops. (Tongfang is a Chinese ODM) Specifically this one is probably the GK5CN5Z, and the higher end modle is the GK5CN6Z.
    Origin PC's laptops are also Tongfang rebrands. (A lot of 'Boutique PC' makers laptops (like Sager) are rebrands of Chinese ODMs)

    For those of you that were able to grab the 1050 or 1060 model, congrats!. These were the price/performance deal of 2018. You had to repaste, add a 2nd stick of RAM to get dual channel, and perform a clean install windows. But after that, this thing is a beast. I added an NVMe drive on top of this and it is a great laptop. Some 1060 models were configured for the 150w power supply and had to be re-configured for the 180w power supply. All the driivers are available on the OP website, along with a BIOS and EC update.

  • @form4li7y
    @form4li7y 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Seeing the next step up in this line would be interesting. What would be even more interesting is if you tried repasting this laptop with a better compound, tried undervolting it, and maybe even throwing that second stick of ram in to get dual channel support. It would be cool to see just what kind of performance someone could get out of it with ideal tweaks.

  • @BobBobson
    @BobBobson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The battery is tiny because of the mechanical drive. If they left that out and put in a (more expensive) M.2 drive of equivalent capacity all of that space could go to extra battery. Dual channel is better than single channel, but with a mobile processor it's not nearly as much of an issue. You won't be hammering the RAM nearly as hard as if you had something like an 9700K.
    The cooling issue... Most laptops share cooling between the CPU and GPU. The reason for this is the GPU runs much hotter than the CPU in almost all scenarios, and needs more cooling. Rather than designing an offset solution with a beefier GPU cooler and smaller CPU cooler, it's easier to design a shared cooler with the proper heat dissipation rating. To put it in perspective better, the TDP of the 8300H is 35-45W, depending on configuration. The TDP of the 1050 Notebook is 75W. You'd need almost twice the cooling solution stuck to the GPU as the CPU if you were to have them separate.
    Edit: F'd up a word cause I'm still in a food coma. Merry Christmas.

  • @gaunterodimm3606
    @gaunterodimm3606 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some insight on the assumptions of parts used. The single stick or RAM is best because it leaves room for upgrade and they can buy bulk of one kind of RAM stick for a lower cost. The display panel may be the same as higher specced models for cost savings from bulk purchasing and variance in assembly leading to lower build costs. Shared cooling heat pipes is actually good in general and raises the thermal displacement in general with rare exception to some loads. As cost savings they may have the same cooling system in all skus. Also having the CPU warming up the GPU or vice versa is not a big deal, should have minimal effect on longevity of either, and in cases overall may actually extend the life of both chips. I think they went for bulk purchasing savings with assembly savings with minimal parts variance. Walmart loves to leverage their bulk purchasing power to be competitive by lowering costs.

    First video I had to downvote. Lot of misinformation here, or at least, it sounds like you kinda know what your'e talking about but not really.
    1. Shared heatpipes: this is not an issue and in fact makes more sense since these days components can get really toasty. The GPU has a much higher TDP than the CPU and needs the additional cooling.
    2. Too much paste: there is no such thing as too much thermal paste, it's just a foolproof way to make sure that you didn't miss a piece. This is not something you should be doing with a conductive thermal paste like liquid metal, but for conventional pastes it makes no difference
    3. Soldered in components like CPU, GPU and the ports (USB, HDMI etc.) has been standard for a while now. MXM add-in cards haven't been a thing for a very long time now. These days you can get an external Thunderbolt 3 enclosure and stick in a card there. The fact that the USB boards are not soldered in but modular and you have 2x NvME slots as well as another hard drive and swappable memory already makes this more modular than 95% of all other gaming laptops out there.
    5. Just because it can't push more than 60~75 FPS in most games on high doesn't mean a 144hz screen is useless. You can probably get around 90Fps if you drop down some settings and in esports titles hitting 144Fps shouldn't be a problem. Also, you will notice the difference in fluidity just browsing and doing other stuff.
    4. You don't need to pull out the screen to identify it, just use a program like HWinfo and it will show you the make and model of the screen used
    At $530 this laptop is honestly a steal, the $800 1060 model with i7 is cheap too. My Alienware 13R3 was €1900 when I bought it new 2 years ago and it has a 7700HQ, GTX1060 and 16GB of Ram. Sure it has a bit better build quality, but I've had many issues with it. If I could get the same thing and a higher refresh rate screen at €1000 less I would jump on it without thinking twice.

    The priority's really off here.
    I sort of get why you might prioritize the keyboard higher in a laptop vs. desktop since you can't easily replace it but it still shouldn't take priority over the main hardware.
    and the panel... wtf is the point of 144 hz if the only games that can take advantage of it are 7th gen or older/esports titles?
    it's not like esports pros are going to be using a laptop >.>

      Then you should be looking at Lenovo Thinkpads, and if you are on a budget used Thinkpads can be a good deal if don't mind a 60hz screen. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X140e I got used for $80 USD off an eBay education surplus auction that's built like a mini tank(11in screen with a 13in body) with an AMD A4-5000, 500GB HDD, 4GB DDR3L(dropped in another 4 GB from a dead Lenovo Chromebook), 11in 720p screen, and a removable battery, and with Mint 19.1 Mate, and the latest 4.20 kernel updates it can actually run a lot of indie games, and esports type games fine. Again, as I said elsewhere, this is simply a CS:GO box. It can't handle anything else at the 144 Hz without turning the graphics way down. Tell me, is a high refresh rate good when you have to turn everything down to minimum settings or off?

    These may not be bad for a casual gamer I suppose but for the price of some of these laptops you could just build a proper pc and then you'd know for a fact what's in it. Watching other videos dealing with walmart pc's they list it'll have a certain item but upon further inspection you'll find that you aren't getting that particular hard drive, graphics card etc.

    I would actually buy that if it was still available, but likely end up spending more and go to the I7 version. They focus more on quality, better screen, better keyboard and serviceability, then just having super high specs which I like. This is actually a very good deal even at the higher price, considering with other brands, something with the I7 version mainly DDR 4 memory and to get the good keyboard, lcd and expand-ability for both another SSD and mechanical HDD drive, you have to spend around $1600 and up in some cases.
    As matter of fact I going to try to order it now, as been thinking about upgrading.

    It's so weird to see a laptop where they didn't totally half ass it as demonstrated by the well above standard frankly pretty sweet screen and what sounds like an absolutely fantastic mechanical keyboard. But to then pair that with a system that sounds anemic and underpowered and you have a price that just doesn't match. I mean you got a battery that's basically useless if it only lasts 2 hours for all this you may as well just get a really decent desktop for that price. And yes I am very interested to know if that stronger version is far and away Superior to this as usually (especially in the case of a laptop that can't be upgraded) it's worth spending the money up front to avoid having issues later.
    Also what's that higher-tier version going for nowadays?!
    (Edit: just checked both this and the slightly higher end version are both out of stock, however the $1,600 one down to now $999 is still available though that's too rich for my blood)

    I appreciate that you're bucking the TH-cam lynch-mob mentality and just giving an honest review. I've been building PC's for well over 20 years now and for the money, this is a pretty good deal. Also if that is in fact a Seagate Pro drive, those are WD's good stuff, so if it's loud or seems wonky, then you probably got a bad drive - but the Pro label means it has at least a 3 year warranty, and in the desktop world it's 5-years, so it's not junk by any means. Very good keyboard, very good screen, easily user upgradeable - mean, for the money, it's a nice system. Just too bad they didn't put a few more dollars into getting a 1050ti instead.

  • @jgould30
    @jgould30 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The $799 model is a hell of a deal and the sweet spot. 1060, i7, 16GB RAM. Swap the single stick of 16GB RAM for 2 sticks (or just add another stick) so it runs in dual channel and you have a great machine that you'll have to spend ~ twice as much. These are just a branded Tongfang (forum.notebookreview.com/threads/tongfang-gk5cn5z-and-tongfang-gk5cn6z.815943/). Same as Origin PC and others. You could easily flash other machine BIOS or wait till Overpower puts theirs up (which they might have already). Hopefully Tongfang releases an update with better fan controls. In the meantime I would suggest to check that TURBO fan mode is turned OFF in gaming center. If you aren't gaming or don't need the extra power you can switch to "Office Mode" which will limit CPU to 35W instead of 55/65 of gaming mode but will be considerably quieter.

    Linus Tech Tips reviewed the higher spec model with an i7 and a GTX 1060. The high refresh rate screen made a lot more sense on that model, as it was able to hit the full refresh rate of the screen in some games. However, they did find that the system didn't live up to the full potential of the CPU and GPU, so your concern with the cooling was well placed. The OverPowered was well behind another computer with the same components (but which cost a lot more money than the current Walmart price)... but was good for $800.

  • @franciscolozada1059

    Awesome review spawn, you should try adding better thermal paste on it to see if that helps with the cooling and keeping the fans quiet

  • @killerkhatiby009
    @killerkhatiby009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved the video! Very clear and just enough depth and detail. Would it be possible for you to take a look at the other 2 OverPowered laptops (15+ and 17+), I'm really curious to see a comparison between all of them.
    Also, others have mentioned having issues with power limit throttling when playing games and only using single channel RAM that comes installed by default (i.e. CPU will only pull about 35W for the i7 models, don't think I've seen anything for the i5 model). Have you experienced anything like this? My theory is simply that with single channel RAM most games are just too memory dependent and thus can't put enough load on the CPU to really even push it to max so it doesn't need to boost all the way to the max frequency and pull 45+ watts. But when you put in the dual channel memory now the CPU can really be pushed harder and do more memory options at once and thus it starts to draw more power under a heavier load.
    To test it you'll want to make sure you have the Fan mode set to Game Mode and the Performance Mode set to Equilibrium (in the OP Control Center app). Do not use High Performance or Gaming for the performance modes since that just causes the CPU to idle at the max frequency all the time and you won't really be able to tell if it is boosting because of load.
    Lastly, if you want to minimize fan noise and heat you can try undervolting the CPU core and cache (the i7 can easily do -0.125V), this helps drop temps without hurting performance at all and is pretty simple to do using ThrottleStop.

    The 144hz craze is so weird nowadays. We gamed on 120hz crts back in 1998. Then everyone forgot and now they sell 144hz very expensively even though in crts it was just a setting 20 years ago... I for one prefer image quality over hz and it's getting more difficult to find good looking cheaper 60hz monitor. Everything is 1440p panel which scales badly with everything.
    And with nvidia still not supporting freesync, it ia still better to lower hz to average achievable fps and enable vsync
