Great Comparison! I have found that guitars equipped with the more basic Stop Bar Tailpiece are usually more resonate, Bigger sounding, & more alive overall when compared to the ABR-1 bridge. I always assumed it's because it is a more direct connection from the strings to the wood!
I have a 99 Gibson CS 54 Goldtop , it’s starting to relic very nicely now. But the sound is incredible. Cheers and thanks for sharing your experience with us 😎🎸
Good Dr., do you happen to know what had been done to the '56 which resulted in the diagonal holes in the bridge section? Almost like it had a wrap around.
@@jltrem Bigsby was an additional customization. It is held on by two small screws on the top and four around the bottom button. It looks cool and sounds interesting in terms of its effect on the frequency characteristics of the resonance. But unfortunately Bigsby is too heavy and doesn’t hold the formation very well.
‘54-‘55 Goldtops, and Specials and Juniors singlecut from the fifties, I believe were the best Les Pauls of its various incarnations. I believe that the Les Paul model was a bad design since its inception, but the period and models with the stop tailpiece and P90s for me are the best. I like PAF more on ES models, semi or fully hollow. Thanks for your videos!
I disagree. I’m not hearing anything here that I can’t get with Tonocracy/NAM or ToneX. The only difference is that I don’t/don’t have to do it at huge volumes.
If you like P90s, you might want to experiment with different amounts of wax potting. As we all know, totally unpotted pickups are often too microphonic to be useful. You can talk into them. I knew one guy who had an old one that was so microphonic that he could use it to play harmonica. It sounded really good for that. Of course when they're heavily potted. This does not happen, but when you have less wax in the coil, they do some interesting things. The neck pickup in my goldtop is an old one from the mid 50s. If you crank it, and slowly walk towards the amp. The sustain will morph into e very Santana like feedback that is controllable from the volume pot, and by where you stand in the room. (The amp is a 5E9 Tweed Tremolux) Heavily potted pickups don't do this. Unpotted ones are not controllable. I think I got lucky and found a "happy accident" pickup with just the right amount of wax in the coil to make this possible. My suggestion to you would be to wind a few P90s to vintage spec, and experiment with leaving them in the wax for different times, and see if you can find a sweet spot where they do what mine does if you find it, you might be very happy with the result. I've had mine since 1987, and when I got it, it was way before all the vintage madness, so it was just an old used pickup from the parts bin. But it's just right, and it's a keeper. Try and see if you can get lightning to strike. You might be very pleased with the result.
@@8BombCustom My pleasure. I'm a great admirer of the work you do, and so I thought I'd offer a suggestion that might have a cool result. I really enjoy watching your videos and seeing all the amazing guitars, and hearing you explain how some of it is done. Hats off Cheers!!
In general I prefer Wrap around bridge from '54, I think it has better sound transfer to the body, it is just my idea of it, I never played one, but maybe there is something to it..
Сначала подумал, что эпичный момент видео - это вытирание потной руки об жопу в начале 10-й минуты... потом услышал ФАК на 11-й минуте и перерешил... авобще - лицо Алексея говорит обо всем. For those about to rock - we salute you!

Yes, I also like the stop bar better. brighter attack and more harmonics. It's really better than a telecaster.
Great comparison and as soon as you plugged in to that combo that was THE sound! Thank you for all your video's and inspiration you provide!
Thank you
That Pipper combo is very impressive not to mention those Les Pauls
You are the best at early les paul info! Keep making these videos !!!

Had a Bigsby at one time .
It is a snake bite from Bigsby
@@8BombCustom Ah, I've never had a Bigsby. I thought they required larger holes.

I'm always happy when you post a video! The '54 wins this battle in my opinion. The neck pickup has amazing clarity and presence.
sweet playing, great vid
Thank you
Wow !! The low mid bark is to die for ! No plugin in the world will give you this !

Very noticeable difference in tone, the ‘54 all day long for me.
