Tape Echo - Fulltone VS Original Echoplex

  • In this video I compare the demonstrate a bunch of settings on a Fulltone SS Tape Echo. I also compare it to an Original Echoplex EP2 and a (a much more affordable) Guyatone EM-66. The EP2 is tube driven and the Fulltone is Solid State (SS) so its not a 100% 1:1 comparison that way. I'm playing the tape echos through a Fender Vibrolux Reverb from 1973 with Gibson Les Paul R9.
    Fulltone - 01:26
    Echoplex 2 - 07:34
    Guyatone EM-66 - 08:59

    I have/use the Fulltone Tube Tape Echo and it's incredible. I had played with the idea of getting a vintage EP2/EP3 or maybe a Roland Space Echo until I saw Built to Spill play the Electric Factory as a three piece. Doug Martsch had a TTE on a pedestal next to him and played it like an instrument, the sound and vibe was unreal. That sealed the deal for me and it's worth it. The sound of just what the tubes do to your signal chain (outside of the echo) is worth the price of admission, not to mention the vibe from the repeats. It's well built and tape cartridges are available, even rewind services are relatively inexpensive. I invested in a pelican case to tote it around. I keep another delay pedal on my board as a backup in case the tape breaks during a gig, which hasn't happened yet.

    all of the three tape echoes sound amazing, each for a different shade: the Ep2 is organig and warm, the Sste is clear and detailed, the Guyatone is dark and atmospheric, but honestly is one of the very rare case in which i would skip " the real thing" and go for a digital replication pedal: tape echo units are very fragile and unreliable, they require constant maintainance and when a problem occurs it' s a nightmare to find it and fix it ( i know something about tape devices).But those sounds are the staple of psychedelic ambient atmospheres! Fantastic recording quality! I never played a real tape echo, but I have a Strymon El Capistan, and I must say that for day-to-day usage, it seems like it produces a very similar sound to what I'm hearing here. I heard very good things about some of the other tape echoes (Belle Epoch springs to mind), but honestly unless you're a total pedal freak I think either does a good enough job.

  • @torarinvik4920
    @torarinvik4920 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I will give the Fulltone SS a thumbs down. The digital re-issue of Roland Space Echo sounds almost identical to its original. The SS is not even remotely close to the warmth and charm of a vintage unit. You might as well buy a generic analog delay pedal IMO. The model called Tube Tape Echo from Fulltone was not that bad. The Echoplex sounds fantastic and the Guyatone is very pleasing as well. Strange that not more people are using those units, they really make the sound come alive. But there aren't many people who use the old Electro Voice microphones for guitar either, and those are cheap, sound totally amazing and turns a modern amp totally into vintageland.
