The Search For Great Tape Delay Tones Part 1 [Fulltone, Roland, Echo Fix, Hiwatt] - That Pedal Show

  • Why do tape delay machines sound sooooo good? It’s a question we are delving into over a series of shows. We kick off with our personal favourite REAL TAPE machines. Erm, our only machines, in fact.
Life too short for long TH-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
COVID-19: This video was filmed long before the social distancing measures were advised by various governments across the world. Rest assured that all of us at That Pedal Show began observing social distancing and stay-at-home measures as soon as they were announced.
    Be well y’all!
There’s just something magic about tape echo. Be it an Echoplex, Space Echo, Copicat or what have you, that - literally - magnetic blend of warmth and often idiosyncratic unpredictability is what puts the tear in your eye and the emptiness in your wallet.
Both Dan and I have been on a voyage of tape discovery these past months; smitten by the sounds, maddened by the maintenance and confused at the question of why modern pedal simulations just don’t stand up. Or do they?
So in this first instalment of (probably) three, we indulge in the tape machines themselves. Consider it a context setting siting lap of what’s to come. In Part 2 we will delve a little more deeply into the single-head Echoplex side of things and a bunch of modern pedals, then follow that up in Part 3 with a similar treatment of the multi-head Space Echo approach. No, we haven’t looked at the European-style Wems/Meazzis etc… maybe that’s one for the future. At present we don’t own any.
Off we go then… please enjoy the episode!

Thank you guys so much for continuing to release material during this completely insane time. I am a nurse in America, and I can’t begin to describe the sheer crushing weight of anxiety that health care workers here are experiencing as the coronavirus pandemic begins to ramp up here. This show has always been a refuge for me when the heaviness of my job takes its toll from time to time, and I am very grateful for the joy, knowledge, enthusiasm, and community this show provides. Thank you for giving me something to look forward to. PS those sounds y’all opened this week’s show up with we’re just what I needed!

Tracy! It probably seems a bit weak to say thank you from 3000 miles away, but THANK YOU for the work you’re doing. What is striking to us is the difference with which people are experiencing this. Built up/urban/populated areas seem to be going through anxiety multiplication, whereas some rural/less populated areas are untouched where people don’t come in to contact so much. Hopefully soon it will be a bad memory and not for the first time, more of us need to realise the value of people like you more. Crazy bankers and politicians - literally useless. You guys - saving us. Thank you.

Good lord those tones in the intro - then the outro!!!.
That Fulltone. Seeing D&M sitting side-by-side back in the good old days.
It made me forget all about Covid-19 and maybe not having a job soon and having to sell all my gear and...
Oh crap. Now I remember. Gonna play the intro again.
EDIT: All the tones in this episode (except for the comparison between the Fulltone TTE & the poor old Boss DD-200!) made me forget about illness and poverty. Thank you TPS. Take care D&M, take care TPS fans. Best wishes to all.

Hey guys. Fellow Tube Tape Echo owner here. Funny thing about Mike is when ordering new tapes, you must provide the serial number and where you bought the machine from. And please, please read the manual. There are lots of tidbits about proper maintenance. In particular, it is very important to always unplug the main output when not in use. Not doing so for an extended period of time may cause the pinch roller to go out of round making the tape transport unstable.
It really warms my heart to see you enjoying the glorious tones of a tape echo. There's something special about being in the room hearing that repeat that is very inspiring. I think you relayed that feeling perfectly. Looking forward to your future episodes.

How does Mike respond if you bought the unit second hand? I’m interested in a TTE but the customer service horror stories I hear freak me out.

    • @InspiretoVictory
      @InspiretoVictory 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lukeneptune3820 You'll be fine with a used one. Just tell him where you got it from along with the serial number when you need to get new tapes. His are sooo much better than the old Echoplex version.
The instruction manual is available on his website. I highly recommend looking at it to get acquainted with the parts, operation and care of a TTE. Mine is about 15 years old and works flawlessly.
Good luck with your purchase. I think they're amazing.

Back in the 80s, I plugged in an Echoplex five nights a week for a fellow named Robbie Dunbar, it was pretty high mileage but I don't think anyone worried about it breaking.
Thirty years on, we plug one in, it works, *it's a miracle *.

Until I bought a single channel no effects loop amp. Thank you lads. I‘ve been with you for years now and learnt so much, all the way from string gauges to speaker cabs. Special thanks for opening up the Hiwatt world to me. I recently tested a Custom SS 2x12 Combo at night in the closed-down shop of a friend, together with my Tele. It‘s the loudest, most gloriously chiming 40 watts I’ve ever heard and I‘m going to buy it, come what may. (Would love to try that Hiwatt Tape Echo with it.) Anyway, please keep doing what you do. Thanks for all the knowledge, all the laughs and all that tone!

Yes, I have a Hiwatt SS Combo.
The sound is smooth and balanced, same is true for it's reverb too.
Only downside to it is that there's no presence control or bright switch on it. I play mostly Humbuckers and Filtertrons, so I may soon experiment with adding a bright cap to allow a bit more top end emphasis.

Such great tones. That preamp in the Fulltone, wow... Great to hear that there are a few weeks more of TPS in the can - will make self-isolation a lot more bearable :-) Best wishes to everyone at TPS over the coming weeks/months, and to all of my fellow fans. Stay safe.

Great video Gents as always. This one in particular brought back lots of memories. As a 10/11/12/13 year old in the late 70's early 80's I was often dragged, sometimes kicking and screaming, to the local working mens' club on a saturday evening. The trauma was occasionally mitigated by the presence of a performer who shared my first name. He sat (not stood) on the front of the stage and played a white Fender Jaguar (I think) into a Copycat echo system (The one where the tape was open to the elements) into a head and 2x10 cab. Can't remember the make of the amp and cab but WEM or Carlsboro were common at the time. The effect was magical and kept what would have been bored a preteen entertained for a couple of hours, I remember that the echoes were so lush and full and although lately I've tried with modern gear I can't get anyway close to that sound. Just thought I'd share that.

Dearest Tone Angels, I adore this video. They’re all amazing. My buddy just had Mark at Victoria amps fix his 201 and it sounds stupendous (we live right by Victoria HQ). Watching this makes me want to consider adding/bringing one to live gigs 😔. Love you two, hope all is well.

WOW! Being a drive junkie I almost didn't watch this episode, glad I did.
The Hiwatt was supreme in its sound, closely followed by the Fulltone. I've just rearranged my pedal board to include my sons Marshall Echohead. You've gotta start somewhere.

Wow! You both never ceases to amaze me. The quality of tone, thought in presentation, and candid banter make your channel my favorite on TH-cam.
I'm more of a live sound guy than electric guitar player but, your videos help me get better tone out of the people I mix for. I learn from you what tone could be.
I wish other demos/shootouts/reviews on the tube would take note that really demonstrating a pedal/effect is much, much more than playing a riff on one setting. Your approach of demonstrating pieces that sum up to a whole are the best parts of really understanding the effect for a complete comparison.
I have been wanting to send you some picks to try and, include a letter with my thoughts on tone wood, winks. Cheers boys! Your videos are my guilty pleasure of TH-cam. Kindly, TimoTe

I've owned Fulltone TTE, that and all the tape delays here sounded wonderful. But yes, that Hiwatt delay sounds simply glorious and would be my top choice if that was an available, viable option. Glorious.

Thanks guys!! Love when you bring in the analog tape delays!!! I could be wrong, but when Dan was playin and Mick was demonstrating the drive of the delay at around 11:40ish, it sounded like Dan was having flashbacks of one of the original Wet/Dry videos....when he had that epic sound/experience going?.

Thanks for the re-primer on tape fellas!
News flash from the western front: my want is engaged in a trenchwar battle with my needs.
My financially challenged bankaccount caught in the crossfire suffers from possible collateral damage.
Argggg, cant wait for the white flag of affordability to be waved.
Lets cross our fingers that a peace treaty can be signed.
Anyhow, Mick, good intro thanks, and yes, blue sounds killer to me, as all your tones in the vid.
Dan, pulling off some groovy stonerrock sounds at the end ( stoner metal in the usa)
The combination of you, Red and tape sounds always amazing to me.
Keep the bugs out, stay safe, till next everyone!!
    Cheers!
