  • In this video, I will show you how to use a BFS rod and reel to cast a 1/16-ounce jig, a crappie jig, to 70 feet without much effort. I can use the same method to cast this jig with a regular baitcasting reel, as long as I put a light line on the reel.

The release piont after the rod loads is also every important. It took me some time to learn the wrist motion cast Japanese angles use when fishing BFS.

Thank you! Im a bit of a masochist and started bait casting with BFS after about 30 spinning rods and im struggling a bit :P I think, that the last advice you show in this video opens my eyes actually :) Thanks!

    Thank you.
Yebbut BFS is so not about long casts at all but short precision casts on a stream or canal, 20-ft to 30ft not 30 paces. Trying to cast hard for distance will inevitably end in a bird's nest.
A BFS reel has low inertia to spin up with the lightest baits but the ability to cast them is down to the rod, and we do not always use the lightest featherweight baits. Even so the rod must load with the lightweight baits, this can mean a light and soft action, more like a light stream fly rod than a spinning stiff and tippy rod.
A purpose of the BFS rod is to get under foliage where a fly rod cannot go, and a reason why the rods are often under 6-ft long. Try casting a gold-head nymph on BFS.

I wonder whether you might be over-estimating the distances you're achieving. I use a bfs rod with my zephyr too, and in no way am I able to reach distances of 70 feet with a 1/16oz lure.
With your first casts at the beginning of the video, I see that you're cranking the handle around 10 times to retrieve the lure. At ~30 inches of line retrieved per crank, you're only getting around 25-30 feet in those casts. It does look like you put more power into your later casts, but I doubt whether those are reaching more the double the distance of your earlier casts.
Regardless, it's a very concise and helpful video for beginners.

I don't think I over-estimated the distance. I actually can cast even farther. If you watch my other videos, you will see that I can cast without using a BSF reel to the same distance. Thanks for your comment!

Excellent tutorial. And I noticed that you did the demo in a wind too. This is the issue that I'm struggling the most with right now. It has been very dry for this time of year where I live, Kansas, USA. But, has also been unusually cold and windy with the wind shifting and gusting. I've been pretty consistent with my baitcasting, mostly because of your videos and those of others, when I'm casting in consistent winds. Any advice on setting my brakes and tension in changing conditions? Or, in your opinion is it still my casting? Thank you for your continued wonderful tutorials.

Thank you so much. I think it is the casting not the wind. Watch my other videos to see how you can improve your casting.

I am using a BSF rod. It is designed for light-weight lure. However, in terms of action, it is moderate fast.
