Dr. Zhang’s Fishing Tutorial
United States
I am a professor specializing in social sciences and holder of a Ph.D. degree. My scholarly endeavors have yielded two noteworthy books, published by Cambridge University Press and Harvard University Press.
Amidst the rigors of academia, I find solace in the art of fishing. These interludes provide me the opportunity to explore and experiment with various angling techniques. In terms of income, I have not earned a single penny since I began creating videos. Instead, it is the pursuit of knowledge regarding fishing techniques that truly excites me!
I must clarify that my allegiance to KastKing's fishing gear is driven purely by convenience and practicality. There is no fishing company, Kastking or otherwise, that can pay me enough to have me advertise for them.

New technique for bass fishing: BFS skipping!
Hi, Dr Zhang. Is this something that be used on an estuary with a hard body lure?
Not really. You can use this on any calm water. It is not a hard body lure. It is actually quite soft.
One thing I’d like to see is for you to just talk about fishing,, your opinions,, experiences, etc. Thanks!
Thanks! I will!
More videos please, thanks!
I will. I have been busy publishing books lately. lol
I’m headed to the backyard now!!!!
Good!
Dr Zhang what rod and reel are you using in this video and are there any budget friendly options you would recommend.
I am using a BFS reel (Kestrel Elite) and a BFS rod made by Kastking .
I really want to practice some skipping. My next video I’m working on is the kestrel spinning reel and rod. I would like to try some of the others in the kestrel range.
This will be great!
I need to practice this cast , will be watching your videos on repeat. Thank you
Thank you!
That fish is a paid actor.. hahaha. But nice video
Lol
That's a beautiful cast, sir!
Thank you!
Awesome, thanks
Thank you!
Love your videos! Do you have any thoughts on fiberglass vs graphite rods for bfs?
I only use graphite rods. Although it is more difficult to cast with those rods, they get me the distance and the sensitivity. I am also a fly fisherman, so I am quite familiar with fiberglass rods and bamboo rods. I know that people use them because they feel that they can not cast well with the stiff rods. If you watch the videos about casting I made, you will know how to cast them. Thanks for the question!
Yeah as Dr. Z mentioned graphite tends to be stiffer while fiberglass is more soft. So generally for bfs, ppl will fish with the softer fiberglass rods in situations where there's a lot of trees around and you're fishing a smaller body of water like a stream, so it's helpful to be able to flip cast in those tight spaces (distance doesn't matter as much as accuracy here). For the stiffer graphite rods ppl fish them in more open conditions like a pond, lake, or even the ocean. I feel like you can usually get some more distance with those rods too. Some lures also need that extra stiffness for a better hookset. For me, I prefer using a shorter fiberglass rod fishing in those small creeks for trout and a longer graphite rod fishing in lakes for bigger bass and stocked trout. There are many other factors that you also might want to take into consideration, like what lures you are throwing (like you might want a stiffer rod for lures that are heavier and have more resistance reeling back in), where you are fishing, what species you are fishing for, etc. Hope this helps 🎣
Great answer!
@@johncaster4296 always happy to help when I can :)
@fuzzy_little_duckling thanks
Hello and thank you for this video. Your thoughts and analysis on this technique are really interesting, thanks to you I will progress. Sincerely, Alain from France.
You are most welcome!
The sun warming up those rocks is waking up the bass looking for an easy meal. Nice!
Yes!😀
Hello and thank you for this video...throwing it over the head is difficult,.. I can't be precise.. Sincerely, Alain depuis la France .
Thanks. You may watch my video about that. Always good to hear from you!
Thank you!
Show them by getting g a big mouse or wetting a big stringer fly. Bfs would sling that easy. Where I live that's what they throw for huge browns. That's a great idea man. May need bfs for my fly game.
Great idea!
Wow
Thank you!
nice video but please tell your cameraman to show widescreen where the lure lands and going little back of you to show lure action and fish strikes. just a suggestion
Thank you! I will tell my wife who is the camera person.
Thank you!
Thank you doctor!
You are welcome!
Thank you, Sensei
You're welcome!
When you fishing and there is a tree with branches hanging above water and all giants living under that shade provided from tree branches and there is a small gap between. That is the perfect time for this technique to use
You are right!
I'm subscribing because even though I have no idea if what you are saying is true, i think you are a super nice guy and I hope your channel grows.
Thank you so much!!!
Ditto kiddo.
Thank you so much!
I notice that line looks like heavy braid,, is there a particular size and material of line you prefer for skipping?
I prefer a 80lb breaded line.
I first saw Gerald Swindle tie that knot, but I still enjoy the ease and strength of the palomar knot.
✌️🤝
Skipping a lure under overhanging trees is a crucial skill on the water I fish. Great tip, thanks
You are most welcome!
BFS is not necessary, but it gives us a reason to buy new and exciting toys!!
Exactly right!
Bfs fishing is so much fun. KastKing makes a really nice and inexpensive reel for this.
Yes!
skip the zepher, there are cheaper chinese reels that blow the zepher out of the water. the zepher is not worth 80 dollars, it's worth about 30 at most. learned that the hard way.
Well, they have better bfs reels now.
This is best explained and walked through dkipping tutorial I've watchec. And ive watched plenty. New sub here. Thanks man.
Thank you so much!
lol I love the ending... OK?! Thank you.
🤝
agree with you and it is all about the light spool and shallow will be a alot better and thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for watching!
Fully agreed 👍

Shall I start making fly-casting videos?

Thank you, doctor !
Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Hi ! I have a Shimano bfs casting reel, the company recommend to use fluorocarbon or braid line. (Fluoro 8lb / PowerPro 15lb). I'm a new in a bfs system. Which line do you think is better for a beginner like me ? Thanks in advance.
Power pro!
this is easily the best explanation to skipping the lure on youtube. i subscribed because your explanation is so details and easy to follow for beginner like me , not because i want to make you happy. thank you!
Thank you so much!
Very nice sir
Thanks and welcome!
I'm not sure that distance is very far, I can easily get baits 5-10x that distance on the curado bfs...
Usually, one can use a BFS reel to get more distance, but I can out cast a BFS reel with a Shimano Citica 100 DVS reel. In this video, I am trying to show that I can use a MG12 reel for dual purpose. Distance is not my main concern.
@@johncaster4296 that sounds like a good video to make, Citica 100 DVS reel vs Curado BFS (or some other modern BFS reel). I think distance here is important because if you are not really fully utilizing the main benefit of BFS reels (ie casting light lures far), then the comparison does not really make sense. For example, if you only get at most 30% the distance of a BFS reel, then the MG12 is not really in the same ball park as a BFS reel
You have a good point!
Amazing video, baticasting is rare in the UK where I fish. Skipping is something ive always wanted to master.
Glad you like it. Please watch my other videos about skipping.
Could you do a video on your reel settings please
I will!
Great help loved it thank you
You are most welcome!
Great explanation!
Thank you so much!
Reel settings?
Free fall of the jig. I will make a video about how to use a DC reel for skipping soon. I hope that video will help those who have trouble using baitcasting reel for skipping.
You are standing in a wide open field, where you can swing all over the place. Try to cast out of your wrist with just a little space around you like you would have in a creek/vegetation environment. Then you will see, how a good BFS reel will shine. 😉
I agree with you.
Great job explaining. I understand completely how you explained the flat part of the cast. Thanks
You are most welcome!
