    fromsoft almost never lets us have a happy ending, nearly every npc we help along our journey either dies or becomes something they didnt want to be no matter how hard we try to aid them

      I suppose it's all up to the intent of devs. I have a general idea that they would want to provoke negative emotions within their players during certain moments, but I should really check out the philosophy behind it all.

    Regarding the npc knowing that you're a tarnished just by looking at you, there is actually a cool lore explanation. Servants of the golden order have golden eyes. Meanwhile, tarnished have dull eyes. Their eye colors generally ranging from dark to light brown. In Elden Ring, someone eye color generally tell us their place in the cosmology. Tarnished have dull eyes, descendants from Hoarah Loux have dark brown eyes, those linked to the Gloam-Eyed Queen have purple eyes, servants of The Frenzied Flame have orange eyes, etc.

      That's interesting! Makes a lot of sense and is an easy lore reason as to why they can identify us.

    Few happy endings exist in Souls games because when you arrive you are at the tipping point of complete diaster it's not the worst possible situation yet and it can get better that's why so few characters achieve happy endings because the world itself is set against them and every character that achieves a happy ending has to fight for it

      Makes sense with what little I know of Dark Souls. Rekindle the flame, mend the Elden Ring, not exactly the best time to be alive in those worlds for sure.

      @@TheLegitWeebs yep its not actively the worst possible scenario in the world its just pretty close to getting their and you can lead the world's to their almost apocalypse of salvation based on your own choices

    My one reservation with this is that this banks on several assumptions about Malenia's current physical and mental state, some of which don't add up.
    Case in point? Canonically, Malenia never repeats herself, because the constant deaths and respawns aren't integrated into the lore; if you beat her on your first try, you will never hear her repeat her declaration that she is the Blade of Miquella.
    As for why she's declaring these things at all, the answer is very simple; she's extremely proud of her devotion to Miquella and her accomplishments under him, because that makes Miquella look good and she HAS to be the one to defend him due to his childish body. However, she IS constantly having to fight off the influence of the Outer God of Rot, always tempting her to give in and 'bloom' into the Goddess of Rot. While we don't know the particulars, Millicent talks about the influence the Scarlet Rot has on her, the constant pain and whispers that it inflicts on her, and it is only Miquella's Unalloyed Gold Needle, the very same needle that Malenia removed during her battle with Radahn to unleash the Scarlet Rot, which allows her to regain her physical and mental health, and Malenia herself mentions how visions of herself as the Goddess of Rot haunt her dreams.
    With Malenia, the point of the Scarlet Rot isn't that it's driving her mad, but that it's constantly tempting her to give in and abandon her sense of freedom and dignity to finally stop the pain and become a god just like Miquella, to become the vessel of the Outer God of Rot just like how Queen Marika is the vessel of the Greater Will, and she refuses to give in to maintain her sense of self, that she is NOT the puppet of a god and she has free will and control of her own destiny, but most of all she's refusing to give in out of devotion to her brother and the promise that he would eventually manage to find a way to save her; this is actually the stated reason for why Miquella broke away fr the Golden Order and the Erdtree and struck out on his own, as the Golden Order couldn't save Malenia from the Outer God of Rot, and so Miquella sought other methods outside the Golden Order. This is reaffirmed by Malenia's last words upon her defeat; she praises the strength of the Tarnished, and then apologizes to Miquella for losing because she has, in her own words, 'finally met her match'. And that's the thing; Malenia may have lost consciousness when she stalemated Radahn, but that's because she unleashed all of the Scarlet Rot she'd been holding back up to that point with Miquella's Needle. When we fight her, she doesn't have that needle anymore and she's only holding the Scarlet Rot back through sheer force of will, so when she's pushed to the edge this time, she's fully given up on trying to hold back and embraces being the Goddess of Rot, going totally all out for the first time in her life.
    As for the matter of Malenia's movements being imprecise? Yeah no, I don't see that at all. Every move she makes is precisely aimed to kill, and her movements speed up and become more aggressive throughout the fight. In fact, her Waterfowl Dance is precisely what makes Malenia so hard to fight; it's a series of fixed movement that are extremely predictable, but only leaves the faintest of openings to dodge through, and Malenia has follow ups that track where you move even amidst the flurry of blows. And the worst part of this? Malenia was TAUGHT this move by a blind swordmaster that had managed to battle and seal away the Scarlet Rot before, and the stated reason behind the Waterfowl Dance's extensive series of motions isn't that it's meant to compensate for blindness, but instead that the movements imitate the flow of water and help drive back and stave off the Scarlet Rot, because moving water somehow neutralizes and washes away the Scarlet Rot, making rivers a natural barrier to its spread.
    Now, on the topic of Malenia not recognizing that Miquella isn't there anymore? Remember that Mohg somehow managed to get into the Haligtree, steal Miquella's body, and flee all the way back to the other side of the Lands Between without anyone being any the wiser. Moreover, Malenia was brought back unconscious, and presumably hasn't awoken until we arrived. We don't know if ANYONE in the Haligtree is aware of Miquella's disappearance, and with how Malenia's Scarlet Rot has overtaken the lower levels to the point where there are Erdtree Avatars and Ulcerated Tree Spirits corrupted by it, it's entirely possible that Malenia has been alone and unattended for years, and that no one has been able to survive long enough to even check to see if Miquella is still there. Hell, Miquella's spirit might have already left the building long before Mohg kidnapped his sleeping body, and there's a very real implication that Malenia was waiting on Miquella's spirit to return and is only guarding the soulless body that he left behind, or so she thinks.
    This is why we need to dig into the DLC next month, because we KNOW Miquella is taking an active role in it.

      A lot of really good points. We'll definitely need some more info on things, but that does make a lot of sense.

    “The dlc has serious time travel implications”, those assumptions were completely wrong. No time travel necessary simply a hidden land in the shadow of the Erdtree. 😉

      We'll see. All of the good FromSoft DLCs have involved time travel so far

      @JERB2012 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Mare_Man They already confirmed that there is no time travel to get to the DLC, (it exists in the game for the Plax fight) but this is more of a hidden region.
      Point aside the only DLC that had time travel FromSoft in the past was DS1 for Artorias (and maybe the end of the 2nd of DS3). Vatti mentioned it in one of the most recent videos and he is completely right.

    so the reason why Malenia needed to fight Radahn is probably because it is necessary for Miquella's ascension to godhood, destiny is controlled by the stars and Radahn stopped them in place, the destiny of everyone in the lands between was stopped and so Miquella's destiny of becoming a god as an Empyrean was stopped, killing Radahn is one of the requirements to enter the DLC adding more probability to this theory

    • @TheLegitWeebs
      @TheLegitWeebs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      With how closely linked everyone's fate is to the stars, I have to agree with this theory.

    Thank you for the opinion on a difficulty setting. There ARE difficulty settings- namely, help from other players via summoning, summoning spirits... But the developer intent in terms of difficulty is part of their thesis statement as a company and also the themes of their games. It would be counter to their intent to add more settings to lower difficulty. Not everything is made for everyone and that's okay!
    As for the instructions given to the tarnished, one line Eneya says stood out to me, "You're here to take... are you not?" We're pillagers, in a sense.

    • @TheLegitWeebs
      @TheLegitWeebs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Being in the position of a pillager does make sense for the player character. Things do be going bad and we show up to do what we think is best for this world. Almost a complete outside force here to upset the current balance.

    I think the happiest side quest in a Fromsoft game that I've played is the one in Bloodborne where you send survivors to either the abbey or the clinic (Choose the abbey if you don't want feel like a monster afterwards.) and even then, if you send a certain character to the abbey all the other survivors are eventually killed off.

    Fromsolf dont do happy ending. at best, the character didnt die. that is the silver lining. I dont think they ever did an actual Happy Ending for an NPC questline before. even Ranni quest end with Blaid and Igi death.

    I mean in the fight with radahn. Melania and radahn are holding something back but only one person stopped letting something back Melania and radahn still fought her to a standstill. And when we find radahn he is still holding back the stars
