    The tone change in "I'm sure you understand me" part. He turns from a goof to a darklord.

      Indeed. Eddington would've been an interesting alternative to Macdarmid re' Palpatine.

      Absolutely CORRECT. That is the final tool of Prime Ministers and Presidents.

    I always love it when Hacker gets one over Humphrey! The civil service really underestimated him.

    I love the fact that in the dinner conversation scene you can see the people in back talks and laugh energetically, there are dynamics, waiter taking orders and menus, actual conversation between the ladies and gentlemen instead of people behaving in a static way, mechanically repeating the same thing over and over.

    I just love at 5:07 how Hacker looks with a little bit of disdain at Sir Humphrey when he says "civil servants".

  • @elaadt
    @elaadt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +114

    When Yes Minister began, Hacker was quite a goofball. As the seasons progressed and he was made the PM, he became more and more versed in the political game. By this point the tables have turned.

    • @fsdds1488
      @fsdds1488 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It never really turned, its just that hes more capable of dealing with these tricks, the majority of the time Humphrey still got his way and it the books, he got total victory over Hacker.

    • @frasierfreak92

      Hacker was intelligent from the start, he’d come from being in the press after all. He was just a bit naive in how the government worked.

  • @fsdds1488
    @fsdds1488 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Fun fact: In 1986 the project of a British made early warning plane the Hawker Siddney Nimrod AEW.3 was cancelled, numerous technical issues plagued the project, but most importantly, the project costed around £1 billion while early estimates were just £400 million, and the radar system was still keep intact, later sold to China for £66 million.

    You can notice a marked change in the appearance of the wonderful Paul Eddington. His skin cancer started to "take a leap" as he said, in between Series 1 and 2 of Yes Prime Minister. However it didn't affect his performance as Hacker. Still top class delivery here.

    • @EastEndBen
      @EastEndBen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I noticed his hair changed, (which I guess is a sign of the progress of the disease) but I always admired that, like Pete Postlethwaite, his performance never wavered even though he was very ill-a true professional

    • @johnking5174
      @johnking5174 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@EastEndBen Yes, the hair was a sign, but also watch material from Series 2, and you will see up close the BBC make up team at work also on his face. One of the side effects of treatment was blotches appearing on his lips and mouth, with discolouring of his skin. Make up did help to cover that. Even though his skin cancer did slow down a tiny bit come 1990, it would not reach a terrible scale until around 1993 when it really did leap ahead and caused Paul to have terrible discoluring on his face and marks.

      also you notice that he always sat down in series 2 or when standing little movement i think this and the french visit was the only time he stood up in the series

      @@alexlazebat839 Jonathan Lynn, one of the writers said he and Anthony Jay the other writer agreed that Hacker just needed to stay sitting. He said it worked, as Hacker was getting pompous and felt he was like an emperor, who would like people to stand while he sat. So it kind of worked.

    'spent 5 million on radar equipment for a fighter plane' I wonder if this was a reference to something real. It seems a bit too highly specific to be included here by chance.

    • @johnking5174

      The writers inside sources were Bernard Donoughue and Marcia Falkender, both worked for Harold Wilson during his tenure as Prime Minister 1964-1970 and 1974-1976, they passed on inside information, so we can assume it has a basis in reality.
