      Is it ever brought up that this sensor can’t resolve 50MP, just curious? I have the chance to pick one up for a killer deal but I’m a little worried about the lack of “true” 50MP. It looks like to even approach 40MP you need Otus-level glass or Sigma’s newest, sharpest long lenses. I personally don’t see a huge advantage with this sensor if the actual resolution I’m getting is within 4 to 6MP of the 5D IV because the DR and color depth is still from Canon’s 10 year-old silicon.

    I bet after 15 years or so, you won´t regret that you shot your pictures at 50 MP in 2016. Screen resolutions are getting higher all the time; iMacs are at 4/5 K now, after ten years they might be at 8K or higher and then you start to appreciate your collection of 50 MP files because upsizing low MP shots for the new screens (at that time considered low MPs like 20) is not going to make them look good.
    Also when it comes to printing, I can see a difference in a 19 x 28" panorama printed with my Epson Sure Color P600 when I have taken the shots the panorama is combined of keeping my 6D vertically vs horizontally. The vertical shots result in higher resolution panorama which has more details when printed.
    I would definitely buy a 5DsR but unfortunately it is too expensive for me, but yes, the 50 MPs would be beneficial in terms of resolution and the fact that high resolution images always hold there own as time goes on.

    I sold my 90D and bought the 5DS. Absolutely no regrets, apart from video (which I never use anyway) the 5DS is twice the camera that the 90D. And crop sensors suck for landscapes!

    Great review of this camera. I have been using it for 4 years now for landscape mainly and some wildlife. The main gripe I have with it is the ISO and the noise. But as a landscape photographer and shooting at 100 ISO that hasn't been much of a problem. I sell my work as large canvases, so this is my reason for wanting the 50mp. Just subbed to your channel Dustin and look forward to seeing more of your content!

    Now in 2020, If I want to upgrade my 5d2, for mostly indoor party, church event, which one be better, 5d4 for $2000, or 5ds for $1000, roughly half price of 5d4. I use max iso 1600 on 5d2, 5d4 will be better for low light of course, but would 5ds be adequate enough compared to 5d2? No I don't need full 50MP for events , but I can step down to Medium Raw, and use full res on portrait job, correct?

    Great review Dustin as is all your reviews. 👍👏👏.
    I have owned my 5DSR since they were launched.. I use it for landscape and wildlife but not action captures. It has the resolution you speak of which for my purposes is ideal .. it’s a great quality camera with a nice smooth and quiet shutter . I also own the 5DS .. both brilliant for their applications . Glass is important and use only the finest or those 50meg sensors will punish you for sure .. fast shutter speed generally helps if used handheld . I use my 300 mm f2.8 MK2 lens on both bodies with great image quality . So at this point 7 years old now I still can’t justify switching over to mirror less. These 50 meg bodies are still delivering brilliant images with gorgeous resolution . I still have my 5Dmk3 body which is still a great camera for the right application . Stay well and as always I appreciate your in-depth reviews . The best man on TH-cam for honest and accurate feedback.

      When used in ideal conditions these cameras still provide some of the best image quality that Canon has delivered - though they are not great if used at extremes (higher ISO or scenes demanding a lot of dynamic range).

    i'd like to get a clarification here, 5DSR has a maximum ISO of 6400, how does it expand to 12800?
    does a higher number of ISO mean more ability to handle noise or does it mean more noise will appear as we ascend in ISO?
    thanks for the video and i hope i can get an answer..

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most every camera has a normal range (in this case 100-6400), and an expanded range (12,800 here). The expanded range usually gives you much poorer results and should mostly only be used in emergency situations.

  • @coronis15
    @coronis15 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for another great review...we appreciate the great effort!
    Question about noise - you mentioned it shows up more with a high megapixel count, but when you change the camera's settings to a lower MP setting, do you still get the same amount of noise, or is it reduced with the MP count? Or to put it another way, is it a result of the sensor itself regardless of settings, or how the camera processes the resolution setting?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +coronis15 It's the result of the pixel pitch (sensor), so downsizing seems to do the best job

    Great review Dustin and thank you for taking the time and effort to produce stuff like this. I am about to replace my Nikon gear ( I sold it as I had to give my son 24hr care after a head injury)Deciding to go for Canon, I have had in my basket the 5DSR and removed and replaced it with the 1DX MKII, I have swapped them several times and am in a real dilemma!!! I want a good all round body but will be doing a lot of fine art and portrait work. I will be buying L series lenses from 16mm through to 200mm all at f2.8. I am worried that I won't be satisfied with the image quality of the 1DX MKII and am tempted by the 5DSR for that reason but will I regret not getting the all round ability of the flagship body. Have you any advice re this choice. I know it's horses for courses but can't seem to find any objective comments relating to the image quality of the 1DX MKII.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1Dx II has beautiful image quality, but obviously at a much lower resolution. Have you considered the new 5D Mark IV. I've been shooting with it for a couple of weeks and would consider it a good compromise between the two. I'm quite happy with it.

    I had a high megapixel camera with Sony, (A7r) after having the 5D Mark iii, I came back to Canon, went for the 6D this time as I'm mostly a Landscapper. What I found, is that the Canon lenses, (was able to buy the 24-70 2.8 ii instead of mark 1 this time, 135/2L and some more), really produced a ton of detail. Although the A7R was giving me more resolution on the sensor side, I was not getting as much detail as I get on the lens side. That's when I finally realized the lenses really were more important than the camera. I can get an incredible amount of detail now, razor sharp images. I'm hoping the 5D Mark IV will be between 28-32 megapixels and I'm sure it will be. I feel like that is the sweet spot. When I had the Sony they didn't have their new zooms out yet, and I didn't want to adapt lenses. I've done some 5DSR test and on a high resolution monitor, even with some pretty extreme crops, I could tell the difference slightly but most people wouldn't be able to. On a print, perhaps it would be more noticeable. If our lenses could resolve 50 megapixels then it would be a huge step.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are some lenses that can resolve high enough to make a difference, but, you are right - many people will not be able to tell the difference. You have to know HOW to use that high of resolution.

    • @nagol5178
      @nagol5178 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lenses definitely come first. I do miss going 1:1 with all those megapixels the A7R had, however the detail with my 6D is much better with my Canon glass. For example, I can zoom into my cats eye on the A7R and of course it'll have more resolution sensor wise, but on the Canon, the eyes will be razor sharp. I realize I could have adapted the lenses but that seemed like a hassle, especially with the auto focus just being better on Native lenses.
      It all worked out in the end because I got better lenses this time around with Canon. The main thing that brought me back to Canon was I noticed how different they looked, the Sony really never felt natural, I was really slow on it, where as I'm fast on the Canon cameras, shooting in M. I was doing a professional photoshoot with the A7R for an 8 month old. As soon as I'd get him in focus he'd move. It wasn't as instant as the Canon, focus, snap, under a second.
      Also, when I had the A7R, I had to shoot at higher shutter speeds to get a sharp picture at 1:1. I never knew when I was going to crop or print large and I wanted it to be sharp at 1:1, and that required a faster shutter speed.
      We do have lenses that can resolve a 28-32 megapixel 5D Mark IV easily. I think out current generation of lenses would be best shown on 28-32 megapixels. On the 5DSR, my 24-70 2.8 ii will resolve 33 megapixels but most don't even resolve 33.

    • @frederickj.7136
      @frederickj.7136 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do it if you can, Dustin. Please. The reliability of Nikon and Canon-centric reviewers attempting to review contemporary Pentax cameras has a history -- right up to the present -- of being pretty abysmal. Both the camera-lens SYSTEM and the DESIGN PRIORITIES behind Pentax bodies and lenses are quite different compared to those of the market dominating two... which is perfectly logical, when you think about it. To perhaps torture a metaphor a bit, you can't pound a Pentax into a familiar Canon shaped hole without seriously missing the point and losing focus on the Pentax particular virtues.
      I, for one, am interested in a K-1 assessment and comparison from someone other than invested Pentaxians, who can be truly objective, rigorously competent, and highly trustworthy -- and I'd probably have to give you the nod for most likely of those with limited Pentax system experience to get it mostly right on all three counts. I'd point to conscientiousness and consistent display of ethics, especially. Seriously.
      Recommended, knowledgable & competent Pentax reviewers for reference: • staff reviews at Pentax Forums (much more objective than some might think); • John Riley at ePhotozine; and notably demanding critic, • Lloyd Chambers on Pixel Shift (VERY few really "get" this -- Lloyd smokes the competition for technical knowledge and competence in this matter, within my experience. Beware of others' glib assessments. You can learn a lot out front of the site's paywall.).
      Thanks for your consideration, Dustin. -- Pentax K3, Sony A7, Canon M3 system, complemented by Sony A5000. Primes-centric user & K-1 prospective owner. And thanks so much for your crucial role in getting me up to speed on the EOS-M option. Your image galleries are invaluable for their consistency and the technical expertise behind them.

    Dustin, the only issue to be careful about when shooting either mRaw and sRaw is it sort of kills the ability to raise the shadows more than a little bit - otherwise it will introduce horrible magentas or greens - thus if you have a high DR scene where you know you will want to play with the file afterwards, definitely switch to full Raw. I agree about the 5D4, if it comes at 28-30 mpix, it is going to be just about perfect.

  • @ilsk3n

    An application for me as wildlife photographer, using prime tele lenses, is that i have 2 cameras in one. The same reach as a crop camera (with cropping) and i still have the FF wider angle if an animal comes close. So the tele almost is like a zoom with the 5DsR :)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true, though the DOF of field doesn't change when you crop, so you don't get as much separation from the background with this application.

    • @ilsk3n
      @ilsk3n 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott Correct, but no different from a 7D2 (although much slower) 😉

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ilsk3n
      That's not really the case, though. At 400mm, f/5.6 and 20 feet, the depth of field is only 0.16 feet with the 7DII; 0.26 feet (already bigger) with the 5DsR. If you shot at 250mm and cropped to get the same framing as the 7DII your depth of field would be 0.66 feet (over four times as deep). You can't crop and create more depth of field; you can only change the apparent magnification of the subject.

    • @ilsk3n
      @ilsk3n 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, but when shooting wildlife i can't decide where the animal will be. Im comparing from the the same shooting position/distance.
      If i shoot with 7D2 and my 500mm and the animal decides to walk closer (too close), i need to switch cameras and/or lens (and risk the animal noticing me and runs away). But with the 5Ds i still have some margin to play with. Still i have the same reach. Cropping the 5Ds to 20MP will give the "same image" as a 7D2 uncropped.

    I was surprised you didn't talk about the ready application for macro - I think that's one of the few clear uses for 50Mp (although the detail & cropping advantages were covered).

    Dustin, great review and I wonder if you feel this camera is still a top player by today’s market standards? How is the high Megapixel count beneficial to shooting jpegs with this camera? I was shooting with an A7iii and Fuji XT-2 and XT-3, but recently switched over to Canon and I shoot with an EOS R now, for professional studio portraiture, fashion etc, and some video for commercial work and TH-cam etc. I am getting more into shooting events, lifestyle, and more high fashion, and am concerned with the EOS R’s single card slot and lack of detail when cropped. I have been debating the 5d MkIV of the 6D mkII but the high MP opportunity of the 5dsR really has me tempted!! I’d love your thoughts for today’s standard,
    Thanks,
    Adam

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The image quality at low ISOs is still amazing, but there are many, many ways where the camera shows its age compared to modern cameras. If you are shooting with the EOS R, the upcoming EOS R5 may be the high megapixel beast you are looking for...though I suspect it will be pricey.

    • @rocknroyalproductions8164
      @rocknroyalproductions8164 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott I expect the EOS R5 would probably be the best camera for me but not at the expected price tags people are throwing out there, especially when I can get a brand new 5DS for $1000!
      But then again if a 5DS is not the right camera for me then that’s $1000 for the wrong camera!
      I’m basically most concerned with having two card slots when I shoot the occasional event which is NOT weddings, And then having the high megapixel count for when I shoot high fashion and the files need to be blown up in to poster size or cropped etc. Mind you I’m still finding my way around the technical aspect of photography.

      I'm not sure if you're understanding what that means. It's a MAXIMUM aperture of F8, which only occurs when using a teleconverter. You can always stop a lens down to a smaller maximum aperture and focus fine (some macro lenses will go to F32) because the camera actually focuses with the aperture opened up all the way and then closes down.

      +Dustin Abbott I agree! I hope they improve the AF for the 6D2, but having shot a lot with my brothers 5D2 I know that the AF there is already truckloads better than what I'm used to in my 550D. Since I need both some better glass and wanna move to full frame, the 6D seems to be my way forward for now.
      Sadly there doesn't seem to be any good deals right now for kitting the 6D with a decent normal zoom at purchase (atleast not here in Sweden). I have a preference for primes myself, and atm I have a 50 f/1.8 STM, 85 f/1.8 USM and the 35 f/2 IS USM. Being out and about, with only one lens, I constantly find myself wanting one of the others instead so I was hoping to combine my primes with a good zoom when purchasing the 6D. Any suggestions? • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CF Cards will provide the best performance - I like the Lexar Professional 1066x. When you have shot a burst of shots, it can take a few seconds for the buffer to write all that information to the card. I suspect you will find noise levels roughly equal to the 7D Mark II, but the advantage is that if you downsample those images to smaller resolution levels in post it will have less noise.

      In Photoshop, you can select Resize Image. That takes the higher number of pixels and compresses them into a smaller area, which results in higher apparent detail at a pixel and less noise.

      +Uptown Wedding Photography NJ While I haven't used the 5DIV yes, both the specs and some early reports from places like DP Review make it seem that the new 5DIV will be the low light king. The 5DsR does a bit better than you might think, though, particularly if you down sample (reduce the image size) in post processing. That makes the noise less evident and actually produces cleaner, more detailed results than what your 5D3 can...and with much less colour banding in the shadows.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I don't think so. I'm without a mirrorless body at the moment as they all seem to have fatal flaws. At this stage we've also seen that full frame mirrorless lenses (think Sony G-Master) are just as big as their DSLR counterparts, which mitigates the size value of mirrorless. I still view mirrorless as a companion to "serious" gear for when you want a lighter option that still gives good image quality, but not as a replacement for DSLRs.

    How is your experience with 50 MP and handhold shots? There is a old rule that says, divide your focal length by 100 and it gives you your minimum handhold time, a photo with a 50 mm lens will be good and sharp with 1/50 of a second. It depends off course on the camera model, a small camera is not so easy to hold steady then a average DLSR and so on. But I still use this guideline and it works for me. • @ilsk3n

    I don't get what everyone is emphasizing about this camera on the vibration sensitivity etc from the large amount of megapixels. It's no differend from say the 7D Mark II or 70D. APS-C with 20 MP has similar pixel size/density as a FF with 50 MP.
    And regarding the noise i would certainly not say it's worse than 5D Mark III if looking at the complete image, but of course it will be more visible on pixel to pixel level since in that comparison the 5DsR image will be more zoomed in and contain more detail. Also here it is similar to 7D2/70D on pixel to pixel level.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pixel dense sensors definitely show more motion blur. That's a fact. It's not a deal breaker, but you do have to be aware of that, and it's why lenses with good IS are very beneficial with something like the 5DsR.

    • @ilsk3n
      @ilsk3n 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott i agree. Not saying you are incorrect. Im just saying it's nothing unique to 5Ds (well ok - if considering only FF cameras) . Its no different to a crop camera with 20 MP, although i never heard anyone mention this for these kinds of cameras. But i guess it's better to mention it than not, only its not unique to this camera ☺️

      +Patrick GEVAERT I actually used a variety of lenses on the 5DSR (around 10). I am limited, however to the lenses I actually have on hand when I do a test. At the time I didn't own any Zeiss lenses, so I didn't have them to test. I did use a number of Canon L-series lens us as well during the test period. The two Tamron lenses that I used are among the highest resolving lenses in their class, however, plus they have image stabilization, which is very important with a high-resolution body like this

    • @bitmastermac
      @bitmastermac 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @fto5935
      @fto5935 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel Han (aka Eternal Torture)
      The D810 is not downsampling...it's a native 36mp sensor.
      And since some comments here claim a decrease in IQ the 5D3 is unfortunately neither downsampling. It's not a full read-out. There obviously is pixel binning going on. In a bayer sensor this leads typically to a decrease in IQ (apart from the lower resolution). The only exception is Phase One with their clever sensor+ method.

      Dustin Abbott Yeah not me either. I’m in to minimal street and architectural photography, and feel a 50 mm, which I use a lot, is a bit to wide in some occasions. It doesn’t always meet my eye. So I’d like to try a new angle, I’m thinking 60-65 mm. Anywho, thanks. I’ll see what I can come up with. A possible solution would be the L-lens 24-70, but I mm afraid It doesn’t reach the same quality as a fixed lens. Correct me if I’m wrong however.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Canon 24-70L II is fantastically sharp, though the Tamron 24-70 G2 might be a better choice as it is nearly as sharp but has an excellent image stabilizer, which is important with a high resolution body like yours.

      @realvaughnfelix 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm going off of all the other reviewers including yours, that if you have to use a tripod and cant use it in low light, it cant be used in any event type situation... So basically Landscape and Studio work and the likes are it's best fit... I think I even heard the Canon rep say its NOT a replacement for the 5DM3, that they purposely made it for studio super hi res to compete with Medium Format shooters...

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
