  • Jessica Roda just published the book "For Women and Girls Only" on Orthodox Jewish women's performances. You can find her book here:
    amzn.to/4jKRJgj
In this long form discussion we talk about what's happening in the scene of Orthodox Jewish women's performances. Because of modesty rules, women are not allowed to perform in front of men. So oftentimes their reach is limited. In Roda's work, she charts how women's perfomances has become a whole economy thanks to the internet and women's creative ways of approaching the Kol Isha issue.

I am Canadian and when my sister moved to the Chassidic neighborhood of Montreal (it was quiet and affordable when she was at uni), that was the first time I realized this community existed. It was like stepping into another world far away, and in a different time period. But of course there are so many interesting dynamics between that community and others in Montreal and globally. I’d love you to do an episode visiting there.

Please do come to Montreal, Frieda!
There are several chassidic communities (as well as Modern Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, plus communities) to visit, including some very interesting organizations & personalities to draw on.
If you want to profile Yiddish Montreal in particular, religious, survivor & left-wing/political sources are available to interview.
Plus, there are some delicious heimishe bakeries, and a range of various kosher restaurants to enjoy.

When my girls were young, the school had a very professional music teacher who was also frum. Plays, private musical performances, dance and proper voice development was part of the curriculum. It was a wonderful part of their education. Yes, everyone was included and it was all done Al pi Halacha. The entire issue of Kol Isha is huge and it’s a territory that is by women, for women and about our lives. We heal ourselves and our daughters and thereby our husbands and sons … the whole community and it comes from within.

@ - Labels are difficult for me, but I guess the community feels it’s basically yeshivish. The gamut of observance and identity in the out of town communities I’ve been in ranges from Agudah to Young Israel, to lots of ‘individual frum people - Chabad is ubiquitous and some families are chassidish, but not part of a coherent chassidish community. …. Because it’s all smallish, there’s often more flexibility. Yes, there’s politics and rejection and all sorts of ‘maneuvering’, but in the end one either stays or leaves. I have children who have made Aliyah. (Chardal - Israel is different) Now that I’m widowed, I’m following them.

When you grow up enmeshed in any religion, and spend your most formative years there, it is really impossible to leave “completely”. This does not mean you haven’t left. The sights, sounds, experiences you had are part of your identity, as they must be since they informed you at such a young age. When you “leave” a religion you may leave practices behind, but memories just don’t go away. And, if many of those memories are happy, all the more reason to keep them close as part of your life experience.

I’m totally blown away by this interview Frieda. A couple of weeks ago I asked here if there was a place to which Hasidism as a lifestyle to go which may not be Modern Orthodox, Conservative, or Reformed. Ms. Roda’s work seems to start to answer that question for me. I interpret this interview as highlighting what is being done by women to incorporate the spirituality and joy of Hasidism with a more modern perspective. What blows me away is that this “Frum Enough” concept (which would be a great title of a book if it hasn’t already been used, lol) is really being led by women despite this is still a patriarchal culture. To learn that even the women performers can survive and thrive after a censure by (male) Rabbis. Thank you again. Along with Church, you’re the highlight of my Sunday.

You are amazing❤ And how lovely is Jessica❤ It was also such a thrill for me to learn that Jessica is an anthropologist with music and religion as her main subjects who then went on to working with women. I just luv that. That was one of my major interests too and i did have one thesis on that. My main thesis / work was about women and alcohol. Another awfully interesting, complex and multi - layered topic😊 Thank you sO sO sO much dear Frieda and Jessica. What a joy to listen to you both🥰🥰🥰

Interesting how complex the Hasidic woman life is once you scratch the surface. As an outsider, the local Hasidic woman’s world seems very simple , exhausting yes , but simple since their lives seem to be so constrained to a narrow realm with no choices. Yet , that is not true. The Hasidic woman seems to find ways to find enrichment and her voice while still being a Hasidic woman. As always very interesting

Hi Freida. I no longer live there but I’m from Montreal. If you ever go back, you must go to St Viateur bagels, get them hot out of the oven, smear them with some delicious whipped cream cheese with chives and pig out on a park bench. There are many nearby. Then head on over to Shwartzes for an amazing smoked meat sandwich with fries and a Citts black cherry coke. Best combo ever!
