  • World War II in Europe ended on the 8th of May 1945. Hitler is dead. Allied armies have occupied Germany. The death camps have been liberated. The darkest chapter in the history of mankind has finally come to an end - or so we think. For the Jews of Europe, the suffering, the dying, and the grief continued, and still continues, to this very day.
At the end of the War, the few survivors of Hitler’s racial war against the Jews have no place to return to, no homes, no families, nothing. Together with the world’s leading historians - from Ian Kershaw and Serge Klarsfeld to Christopher Browning to Georges Bensoussan - we explore their desperate struggle for a new beginning - and we also look at Germany, and the efforts of the victorious Allies to bring justice to the perpetrators.
As we explore the world after the Holocaust, we also look back at the key moments that brought about this greatest of all crimes in the history of humanity.
    Documentary: After the Holocaust (2015)

My grandma was in a concentration camp, along with some of my other family members. She never really talked about it. I thought she was just a stubborn, cold old lady, but now I think she keeps an arms distance from us just because of what she saw and experienced when she was young.

I think when you loose so many loved ones in such a short period of time in such a brutal manner, you tend to distance yourself from affection of others. It is heartbreaking😢

Also talking about it, is re traumatising to her.
To talk about it is reliving the experience. It takes a lot of courage and strength.
Also she may be afraid of traumatising you. There's probably been plenty of times when she's relived those memories over and over in her mind and may just want to be alone when that happens.

That’s how some people cope. Some people just don’t want to talk about it.
My grandpa was in Vietnam war. I think he was drafted.
But he never wanted to talk about it.
He never spoke about it to my grandma or my mom.
The only comment he ever made was one single comment and he said “war movies can recreate a lot but they can’t recreate the smell of war.”
Whatever he saw there during that war, he had trauma and he didn’t want to speak about it. He just wanted to try and move on from it.

@@Screencappedhats No, I am not, nor was that my intention.
It has nothing to do with the supernatural and can be considered an expression that can often be comforting. It is a way of saying I care.
On a level that is a billion times lower than the tragedy, people say God bless you to a sneeze. They don't ask first, do you believe in God, so I may say God bless you without offending anyone?

I was living in Jerusalem when eichmann was captured and brought to israel. I still remember the jubilation on the streets. It was the moment camp survivors stopped hiding their tattoos from the shame that had engulfed them; because they had not fought back. How could they have known/suspected the barbarism that was programmed into the dna of such a civilised country as Germany purported to be.
I met two survivors in israel and one in England. A jewish lady widowed before the war. She had lost her twelve year old daughter in the camps. A German non jewish political prisoner who came to israel as the reuter correspondent and was integral to the establishment of german/israeli diplomatic relations. The third survivor was a polish lady, a member of the underground, captured by the gestapo. Brutally tortured, saved by the polish medical teams flown in from Great Britain. She was medivaced to London and still hunted by the Russians in the 60s and 70s.
These three survivors showed me kindness and compassion. The polish lady saved my life. They showed me that there is life after 'death'.

My husband and my boys were in a Polish dance group., since we had a lot of children in our group we opted not to see the movie shown . The children, were very respectful, and everyone spoke in whispers. Such a tragic, sad place. Lg. glass cases were filled w/the belongings of the prisoners. Hitler hated the Poles, too. Some things are too horrific to show and I am thankful for the sensitivity and also the consideration for the privacy of the victims. I think seeing too much can harden and dull some people’s consciences. The horrors become commonplace and not as shocking. I also think the blurring makes it more appropriate for families with children to view together. I think it would not be okay to show all to young children. I was traumatized by a movie I saw at six years old and made sure my son was not exposed to similar things when he was young. (Not Holocaust-related, but something else.)

i have a funny feeling about my birthday....
for it happens to be the 27th of januari, holocaust memorial day and the date in 1945 of the liberation of Auschwitz.
i visited Auschwitz last summer and it gave me a very dreadful feeling to walk through the grounds there. NEVER AGAIN! is the credo, but still people are killing others just because the "others" are not liked by some crazed leaders with twisted ideologies. (most recent example in Europe was the conflict in former Yugosalvia.)
i always remind myself that my birthday is also the birthday of Mozart, who brought us so much wonderful music, i just have to do that to avoid feeling depressed about the day i happened to be born...

I believe not many guards held the hatred for Jews(I COULD be wrong) but their position in power and the dehumanization of the Jews. For example, tattooing a number on them, removing their name made is easier to see them as nonhuman or a subhuman. There was a college experiment where some students were prisoners and some were guards who can execute punishment and they exhibited the behavior or cruelty. The holocaust is the greatest tragedy in human cruelty. And I’ve always kept that in my mind ever since I’ve been aware of it when I was a child. Seeing those men walking naked and looking like literal skeletons with no hope left. Heartbreaking. I have no pity for the German guards who were shot by American soldiers out of rage upon learning what happened in the camps. And the cruel doctor died while swimming from a heart attack and drowned. Happy he didn’t go peacefully.

There were also Political Prisoners held at a number of the camps that were sent there towards to end of the war when the Nazis couldn't sustain the number of Prisons and Labour/Extermination Camps they had. Some of these prisoners were internationally known by relief agencies and charities who had been working on their release. The German population and those inside occupied territory who lived away from didn't know what was happening to the Jews in the camps with only a number of breaches in towns and cities where films were developed at pharmacies, etc and discovered. Taking footage or photographs of Concentration Camps, executions or Prisons was strictly prohibited - that which remains is either official footage gathered for posterity or taken secretly. All other footage and photographs are from the liberation of the camps which is why we see so many line drawings from witnesses/victims of the camps themselves xx

This History should be studied in every school all over the world. Instead, we are taught to tolerate and even embrace, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and pedophilia.
Don't think so? Just read a news story from Georgia where a couple of fellas (not men) IMO were convicted and sentenced to spend 100+ years in prison for crimes against their 2 legally adopted sons from a Christian Special Needs Adoption Home. Zach Zulock I believe was 1 of the “dads”.
Not only were they SA the boys they also had cameras rigged all over the house. So, they live-streamed the events to a paying public. Selling the recording online makes them quite wealthy. The feds were suspicious when they built a 1/2 million dollar home outside of Atlanta in only a couple of months. They seemed to become quite rich$$$ following the adoption of the boys in 2019. They had ordinary jobs. One of the men sentenced who watched at least one of the live feeds but had no encounters with the boys (his testimony) got just 20 years because he came forward and had recordings made of the perpetrators. It's disgusting.
#Plunder she's got the transcripts on the case if you are so inclined. God bless you.

You are listening too much to corrupt mainstream media that are known to distort the truth. Right now, they are siding with terrorists with no sympathy for what it is like to live with terrorists as your next door neighbors or to be surrounded by violent countries and people. Some day, people will find out what Israel is dealing with if they don’t wake up and start defending liberty instead of defending terrorists.

It's even sadder that Jew-haters perpetuate this lie. They've been scapegoating Jews for centuries; this is just the latest iteration.

The truth is the Nazis didn't do it alone, unfortunately they did get a lot of help from the Jewish leaders. Even though this is a claim that is reported as false many survivors spoke about it encountering a lot of criticism. The sad part is as time goes by a lot of the facts disappear and with social media less and less children are taught this in schools.

A small group of Jews who were so desperate to survive and save their families were working with the nazis. Tiny tiny amount, and out of sheer survival.

Very informative, interesting and leaves so much to the imagination of the holocaust destructive and long lasting destruction of the inner being of survivors.
