Why are you grabbing the arm like that? Ippon Seoi Nage in Judo is taught by pinching the arm down into your elbow between forearm and bicep. Is this some sort of JJ secret we're not aware of?

The arm is grabbed as such to help stop it coming around the neck and slipping up onto the shoulder.

@@KyushinRyuSchoolofJujitsu With your hikite grip, yes. But I'm talking about the tsurite that's wrapped around the arm.
That's doing the opposite of stopping the uke from wrapping their arm around your neck- they're pretty much going to get your neck because the hand grab won't stop it. And the throw is weaker.
If that was such an issue, it would be exploited in competitive Judo, but it hasn't.

@@TheNEOverse A lot of the time, competition application they will grab the arm with their tsurite.
How is it weaker with the hand grabbing it but stronger with the hand not grabbing it? Uke's arm is still being pinched between the bicep and forearm but the hand instead of doing nothing is grabbing their arm or even their gi.

@@KyushinRyuSchoolofJujitsu I've been told that clamping the arm deep is the better because trying to hold it with a hand is too shallow and risks it slipping out if you don't manage to get enough sleeve.
He also likes his Ippon done in such a way that you can use it no-gi, and its much too slippery to try hold by the hand in his opinion.
