Hi Graham. Thanks for the video. The air box issue on the 200 is an issue I confronted the dealer with when I first purchased the vehicle. I was not happy with the dust leaking around the filter. They said it was in spec but I nevertheless sought a solution. What I have done since that time is apply rubber grease to the air box join. So far so good. I am surprised that Toyota have not dealt more seriously with the problem. I know you can get an aftermarket air box but as yet have not gone down that pathway. Good luck with the difficult decisions you have to make.
Hey Graham You will have it all on the go by now You got yourself a new fan from Kal Yes been there n done that I love the wise acres. I went through the same issue about 2 months ago with my 09 Sahara as it was blowing blue smoke on startup so I got a comp test and my lowest was 310psi so I dodged a Bullet. New injectors fitted set me back just over $6k fitted. What is the best option to stop the dusting, I have seen people put an extra foam seal around the edge of the air box for the filter to sit on and so when you put the lid on it clamps tighter ? Do you buy and aftermarket air box. Please reply if anyone has good ideas for all us 200 series owners. So sorry to hear about this as I enjoy your site.
If it was "Dusted" ALL cylinders would be down, not just one. I know the early ones had EGR issues causing this on that bank of cylinders. This happened to a mate of mine at 140,00km. It was going to cost him $30,000 to fix at the time. Not happy Jan.
Hi Graham, sorry to hear about this issue. Can I ask if you or the mechanics ever "cleaned" the air filter ? From what was visible the air box looked clean around the seal. I regularly replace engines from being "dusted" due to "cleaning" air filters. It's the worsted thing you can do. As already mentioned, radial seal air filters are heaps better. Good luck with it.

That sucks mate, feel for ya. Apparently my Prado is affected by the same seal issue, it’s unbelievable that Toyota allow this to continue. Good luck with repairs.
I'm no expert , but when you fit a snorkel it "rams "any dust laden air down via the snorkel tube to your air box. If the air filter isn't 100% , the dirty air gets pushed past into your induction system to the motor. Correct me if I'm wrong. That's how i see it . I just bought a 330cfm Donaldson pre cleaner for about $100 for the top of my Safari snorkel .Cheap insurance ?
That whole “ram” effect is a bit of a myth, the amount of air the engine needs is well in excess of what is pushed into that hole whilst driving.....you’d need to exceed about 190kph to “ram” enough air into the hole for it to create a positive pressure in the airbox.

I heard the old 200 were a step back from the 100 with build quality especially with sealing out dust in the cab and the engine losing what a cruiser really is once they bought out the 200 turning it into a city car.
This is probably my biggest fear with my newish PajeroSport diesel 4wd. Paid about 37k for one that was an exec. driven Mitsi driven vehicle with about 10k on it. Did plenty of checking to see if there were any known issues and couldn't find much of anything so bought it. Tbh I am not in the slightest interested in pushing it to the limits simply because I have no desire to spend big bucks on repairing it if/when it breaks. With the mods I have done on it I suspect that it is very capable but I just want a big camping wagon so I am happy with what I have. I can easily afford to fix it but why would you want to? Just subscribed so good luck with it all mate. I can imagine your guts dropped a bit when you got the news.
Mitsubishi have been a solid performing underdog appreciated by their owners and I see plenty still plodding around. just keep up on regular maintenance and user inspection routines. Not sure how newish it is but don't skimp on the coolant system. Consider a secondary fuel filter especially for common rail protection. An EGT/pyro gauge helps too . 4wd action did a dual cabs compare and roundup and the mitsi trition came up trumps. That being said i bought my TD2.8, 97 Mitsubishi delica for 5k and have probably spent 10k doing up 25+years of age...40k for a new toyota engine ouch
@@UncannySense Yeah I am pretty paranoid about looking after it. It has 12mth 15k service cycle but if it goes anywhere near 10k I give it an oil and filter change at an approved place to be on the safe side. I have heard many times that Mitsubishi really didn't push their 4wd system as much as they should have in marketing term. Simple, robust and reliable from all I have heard, including an instructor from a 4wd course that I took. My brother has a mate that is an approved service agent and is always with the vehicle when it is serviced. Oil in the diffs/gearboxes etc is always perfectly clean even when it is past its service time and being used hard. Horses for courses as they are a different vehicle entirely to a 200 series in a lot of ways but I would want to be a whole lot richer before I would consider the Toyota.
I hear the dust leak issue is common on these babies. Time for a class action I think. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Respect regarding not selling it to some poor family. Good luck man.
Exactly the sam thing happened to me. My mechanic fitted a reconditioned engine and new injectors. Injectors are cheaper in NZ. Also fitted an after market air box that seals better. The old engine has some value to reconditioners. Total cost of the engine repair (excl airbox) was around $18,000. I felt exactly like you do.
Hey mate I've got a vdj79 and it was serviced by a dealer I checked the filter and the ruber seal was twisted and the was a tiny bit of dust leaking past it, I put silicon grease on the rubber seal now and service it myself to stop the issue all together.
This a very common fault on VDJ200 toyota had a problem with a hose clamp fitted in the wrong place allowing dust to enter the engine also a power balance test can be carried out with a scanner saving hours and is more accurate
Oh my bloody goodness mate, that's the thing we guys all are scared off happening!!! Good luck mate and we all hope there's a light at the end of the tunnel 😎✌👍
I feel for you mate, nothing worse than a huge set back on your pride and joy. I hope you can come to some reasonable solution. Appreciate all the content you share with us 👍
We'll thought through decision. Did you consider financing the new motor? 30k over 36 months is about 1k per month. Perhaps easier way to attain a solid vehicle.
Graham I feel your pain. We brought a 76 series which ended up with issues 5 days after picking it up, long story short and over 25k we ended up having to put a new engine in it due to broken oil injection nozzle i believe it is. I hope you guys get back out on the tracks.
Wow, bad news & a concern for all 200 owners because of a design fault which should not exit in the first place. I realize it’s early days but what changes or mods are you planning to protect the new engine from the same issue a few miles down the track. Do appreciate the total honesty you’ve displayed in all your videos, hope you & your family get on top of this massive financial hit as quickly as possible.
Defo keep it and fix it mate. Exact reason i havent updated my 48 patrol to a new one, coz if it broke id be broke fixing it. May be able to source a good motor from a reputable wreckers with leak test etc Done. But if i was you id just cop the bill of new engine form toyota.
Drive it till it dies and keep an eye out for a good wreck and do an engine swap. I drove my 47 with a cracked head for 2 years before doing an engine swap for another awesome 2h. Cost me $1200
To be honest I think it had been like this for a while.....because I’d been complaining about lack of power & other issues for a while....atleast 40-50K & it has driven through all that without showing anything to suggest the issue was this big.
Hi Graeme. The air filtration system as fitted to the Toyota common rail deisel engines has been totally inadequate since those engines were first introduced. As far as i am concerned there should be an after market cyclopac air filter system fitted to these engines, that effectively filters the fine particles from the intake air. I wonder how Toyota has got away with this totally infective air system without the public backlash that should have happened. The filter membrain medium in their filters is far too open, and allows dust to simply pass through unhindered. The panel filter has such a small surface area that to get the nessecary airflow it has to have a very open filter medium. Hence the problem that you are having now.
In my shop we don't even open the airbox on any VDJ unless we have a new genuine filter to go back in. The seals are basically a one time use deal. They squish giving the sealed up effect and once you disturb it then it's not as effective.
You have pushed this very heavy vehicle hard for a long time. It is not a surprise that in severe service it failed well before it might in light service.
Bugger a bit unlucky,my cousin is a mechanic at the mines and he told me about them monster land-cruisers and the price on replacing the engines,i own a old land rover and when i see one of those cruisers overtake me i am full of envy for that lucky bastard, but after watching your clip i feel i made the right choice restoring my old landy. l still think about buying those v8s cruisers but the labour and cost of repairs will always influence my decision.
Any tips Graham for other 200 owners like myself to avoid issues? I have been getting the grease around the airbox seal and checking it but want to avoid having issues in the future.
Bummer Graham. I'd be gutted, especially as you're not the first to have this predicament. I'd go to consumer affairs and force Toyota to replace the engine. its not fair wear and tear...
First thing is your mechanic could do a relative compression test in 10 mins if he invested in a Pico-scope and a current clamp put on starter cable. Current measured to get each cylinder over compression. Easy first test. Saves disturbing half the engine bay. Second, been using filters from Supercheap or Repco?? Big mistake. Third thing. I feel for you mate. I'd be looking at a full Toyota motor. Then it's a great car again.
I really wonder why a rebuild would have cost $25k. We wound up paying a bit over $12k when we rebuilt the Coaster engine but that included towing to Hedland, shipping back to Perth, air-fares back to Perth and the rebuild. If $25k is what it is costing to rebuild the more modern engines, I am very glad ours is so old. In fact $25k is more than either our 90 series or the Coaster cost us to buy... crazy price. I can sort of understand why you went to route of a new engine but hell, that is a huge amount of money.
I feel for you is this a common problem with the 4.5 l diesel? I’ve only ever had one diesel and had nothing but problems with it so I now own a petrol Landcruiser because the cost to replace a motor is only about 5k
Hey, new to your videos ... but wow, what a terrible situation for you in this case. I have a 200 and it’s one of my biggest concerns. Huge thinking required to try get your head around this. Interesting how you mentioned selling for 35k. Would that have been without the engine? Or with engine, but being transparent to the new buyer I assume?
Used engine oil analysis way back would have alerted you to potential issues down the track, pardon the pun. Easy to say now but you would have seen highly elevated levels of metal and silica thousands of Klm ago and that should have been an alarm bell🤔
All the best. Thanks for video allot of very useful info. Odd that compression is really down on just 1 cylinder. Although clearly the bank isn't perfect either. Rebuild?
Unless Toyota come to the party on a considerable discount for a new engine I wouldn't give them 1 cent, after all, they are being further rewarded for doing every 200 owner an injustice as this is a well documented fault that Toyota should have rectified with a recall. I would do a minor rebuild on that engine, rings and bearings, I'd balance it while I was at it. Go a custom intake system with proper sealed filtration system. Back on the road.
Matey that sucks. Not your fault this should have been fixed a long time ago from Toyota. How many others are out there just like that. Also there's going to be a lot of upset Hilux owners as well I have been hearing issues with their boxes as well. Next mod on my car will be aftermarket air box I don't trust any manufacturers airbox now. You're a great couple wishing you better luck in the future. Cheers
Thanks mate - appreciate your support. Yeah we’re back from this little issue, it’s a shame, but we’ve learnt from it & have come back.....I’ll discuss all these issues in the upcoming episodes.
Toyota is known for dust passing air filter ... Toyota know but refuses to fix it ... I was in market for dual cab and Toyota salesman was cocky, " Hilux best in this and thet" I asked him about dust passing air filter and DPF and he told me " everything was fixed I just walk away to Ford dealer and bought ranger wildtrack
@@Bush_Tucker bad to worse??... had ranger wildtrack 2014 ... 180k not single problem (I'm laying!! had problem with tub roller shatter but fixed) now 2017 wildtrack (was to buy Hilux) , so far 55k not single issue ... my neighbor have amarok 2.0 2012 manual since new not single issue (over 200k) ... I'm trying to say every manufacturer got problems some more some less..but for me at the moment ranger are best for comfort, safety, not bad on fuel and so far reliable
@@great_offroad_adventures That's awsome im getting my self in to a 200 in the next six months so ill be keen to get a heads up on a good dealer THANKS 👍
Now that's what I call a bad day at the mechanic's, hope you get it sorted for not to much coin mate, really sorry, my heart would have that sinking feeling hearing that news, looking at your face that's what was happening to you.
$30k for a new engine with pump injectors and turbos. Sell old engine turbos etc and be honest about the loss of compression and I reakon you still might get $5-10k for it
I wonder if Toyota Finance provides solutions to finance a new Toyota engine. If they don't, they certainly should. I would contact your dealer or Toyota Finance directly.
it doesn't sound like good financial advice. Car finance are companies designed to gut you..you really want to deal with these people? Better off taking a personal loan.
Maybe, but I'm not here to give financial advice. Secondly, It was merely an OPTION to help fund a new engine. Thirdly, being a TH-camr, it might be that there is a business and Tax component to consider.
Dude, that’s tough. Question though. Is there anyway you can guard against the dust leaking past? Dual filters are common for fuel, but never seen anything for air filtration. Is there a product that exists?
Dam..this sucks big time..sorry to hear this..toyota use to be good and cared..i been hearing a lot about air box problems, it’s making me wanting to stick with my Prado with a 1kz te and hope I got cash to fix or replace when it kicks the bucket..
100% run existing engine into ground while you save up the capital .... in saying this i now am going to purchase an aftermarket sealed air intake box, the dust ingreation is a well known issue, better of spending 1k on a stainless sealed box then 30k on a new engine.
Start a go fund me, I can't give much but it might help. I'm just looking at changing air filter to a unifilter which should help? Long term want custom airbox as I think dust is getting through my toyota paper filter on my vdj78
Save for a new motor it is the cheapest option and you will always find the 200 better. I know you have heard it all before but the only dust stopper is the uni filter and a uni filter snorkel sock which I put the sock on for off road.. I only mention this so you don't go down the road of an after market air box as it is the panel filter itself that lets dust through and not just the seals.
Hi G You will be up for passenger side turbo more than likely as well This has happened to two friends of mine just recently I installed a moonlight fabrication air box a while back for this very reason that the air box is poor build off the back of Toyota Sorry to hear that it has also bit you and the missus.
I think we are going to start seeing this a bit more on engines with similar km as more people are starting to use them for what they were “actually” built for
People get free content, put together a GoFundMe and see if us subscribers can help out. Everyone else seems to do this when they need a bit of money. If you get to much, donate it to a charity.
I don’t believe it’s a measurable quantity....in my case it’s been an accumulation of damage over a long period of time, it’s not like it’s happened over night, all of a sudden.
Thanks very much for your reply. I have a cruiser as well and have noticed some dust getting on the clean side of the airbox just recently even though I use a genuine air filter - it is a very worrying sign and as you say, hard to measure. Fair to say for I plan to deal with it as quickly as you can I guess. Thanks for putting your video up and alerting us to this type of issue.
Cheers mate - appreciate the support!!!
Cheers mate - appreciate the support!!!
We’ve found the light & it’s all documented & coming out for everyone over the coming weeks.
@@great_offroad_adventures My goodness that's awesome awesome news, looking forward for part 2/3 cheers mate!!!
I feel for you mate, nothing worse than a huge set back on your pride and joy. I hope you can come to some reasonable solution. Appreciate all the content you share with us 👍
XploringOz - Cheers mate....appreciate the support. Yeah we’ve been able to come back from it alright....lots more content & info coming soon.
Toyota know about & have stated it's not a concern. About 2 years ago 2 Hilux been review broke down due to dust inhalation.
Yep - been going on for a while, shame it hasn’t been address properly.
We'll thought through decision. Did you consider financing the new motor? 30k over 36 months is about 1k per month. Perhaps easier way to attain a solid vehicle.
What’s the cost to rebuild the engine in it. Might be just a rebore and over size rings.Best of luck with the future.
Mate that sucks nuts. I feel your pain, I’m going through a similar thing with my 70. Can’t wait for the next vid 👍
Cheers mate - appreciate the support....it’s a shit situation to be in aye!!! All the best for your 70, hope you have as speedy resolution and we had.
Thanks mate appreciated the support - Ep 3/3 covers all your questions which will be out in a fortnight.
Defo keep it and fix it mate. Exact reason i havent updated my 48 patrol to a new one, coz if it broke id be broke fixing it. May be able to source a good motor from a reputable wreckers with leak test etc
Done. But if i was you id just cop the bill of new engine form toyota.
Just found your channel because of this video, you just earned a new subscriber. All the best mate.
Cheers mate - appreciate the support 👍🏻 & hope you enjoy the channel.
What made you check ?
Drive it till it dies and keep an eye out for a good wreck and do an engine swap. I drove my 47 with a cracked head for 2 years before doing an engine swap for another awesome 2h. Cost me $1200
Mate,! Thats so gut wrenching.
Just drive it till she stops, im sure she will surprise you.
To be honest I think it had been like this for a while.....because I’d been complaining about lack of power & other issues for a while....atleast 40-50K & it has driven through all that without showing anything to suggest the issue was this big.
Tough break mate. Good luck with it all.
That’s so frustrating. Great opportunity to stroke it to a 5.1L 🤙🏻
All the best guys, wow what a decision. Chin up mate 👍👍👍👍
I would be absolutely livid
Was probably written across my face whilst I was talking at the end 😂
In my shop we don't even open the airbox on any VDJ unless we have a new genuine filter to go back in. The seals are basically a one time use deal. They squish giving the sealed up effect and once you disturb it then it's not as effective.
Yep - the seal/ airbox design is poor at best.....would definitely expect more from Toyota to be honest.
Stupid question, but does insurance not cover this?
You have pushed this very heavy vehicle hard for a long time. It is not a surprise that in severe service it failed well before it might in light service.
Oh wow. Sorry to see this happen. What year is it and how many ks has it done.
Unifilter
My next few videos will cover this question
Good to see you back graham, but not under these shit circumstances. Chin up mate!
Thanks guys!!! Heading to Broke this weekend, go and relax & get back into the swing of things.
I had a LC 200 when a friend had this problem with his 2015 LC 200 got rid. I have a Triton now not ideal but dodged a bullet.
So the foam you put around the edge of the filter didn’t do the trick?
Next video will explain it 👍🏻
Hey, new to your videos ... but wow, what a terrible situation for you in this case.
The amount of 200s i see where i live dusted and sooting white smoke is unbelievable
Good luck mate.I'm sure you will be back on track in no time.
Thanks mate - it’s all been worked out now....with the next videos coming soon.
So you went from bad to worse nothing to brag about their mate ahahahaha should of got a isuzu
Will admit to looking at dmax’s as the replacement to the 200.....maybe next time around.
This is verry bad news. And a lot off luck with the new engine
I feel for you mate. That sort of news is gutting.
Was it using oil ?
Ps will a toyota dealer help out by getting on board with the new motor ?
Come back next week to find out - I do know an exceptional dealer in Perth.....and I will refer everyone I know to them for help!!!
Cheers mate - appreciate the support....all will be revealed tomorrow.
Go to a reputable auto wrecker and get an engine from a 200 that’s taken a hit in the rear end.
Good luck with that engines are near impossible to get hold of second hand
$30k for a new engine with pump injectors and turbos. Sell old engine turbos etc and be honest about the loss of compression and I reakon you still might get $5-10k for it
What’s the legalities of talking to camera and looking at it whilst driving? Because you can’t talk on a phone in Australia
Alloy snorkel, airbox with 2'' thick seals with locknuts and bolts.. twin filter
@teege2003 Was that one of those 1% interest rate deals?
Didn't your insurance cover your whole payout?
Maybe, but I'm not here to give financial advice. Secondly, It was merely an OPTION to help fund a new engine. Thirdly, being a TH-camr, it might be that there is a business and Tax component to consider.
Dude, that’s tough. Question though. Is there anyway you can guard against the dust leaking past? Dual filters are common for fuel, but never seen anything for air filtration. Is there a product that exists?
Unifilter works mint
Hey mate, sorry to hear, you didnt happen to get the injectoe values did you?
Certainly did mate - nothing worse than +1.6 or -2.1
Dam..this sucks big time..sorry to hear this..toyota use to be good and cared..i been hearing a lot about air box problems, it’s making me wanting to stick with my Prado with a 1kz te and hope I got cash to fix or replace when it kicks the bucket..
100% run existing engine into ground while you save up the capital .... in saying this i now am going to purchase an aftermarket sealed air intake box, the dust ingreation is a well known issue, better of spending 1k on a stainless sealed box then 30k on a new engine.
Come back next week to find out 👍🏻
I feel for you mate, glad it’s all worked out though bud 👍
Start a go fund me, I can't give much but it might help. I'm just looking at changing air filter to a unifilter which should help? Long term want custom airbox as I think dust is getting through my toyota paper filter on my vdj78
troop ey no give the money to the bush fire relief.
Move to Broome, it’ll probably get stolen.
Engine re-build mate and keep going 😎👍
Cheaper to go new engine than it is to rebuild.....crazy right 😬
I own a 6 grand rodeo and i will stay with that , 30 grand man , modern 4wd keep you poor
Where are you getting in that rodeo?
Not far
mint jelly far enough for me , the harder you push it the further it goes, then come the bills when your diffs and box are full of mud
Diff breathers. I dont like driving in to big mud holes and swamps. I meant more clearances, flex, power, payload.
@@elrud5964
Define "far". One man's epic adventure, might be another man's first steps. Not everyone has a $150k budget.
Heard a lot of great things about Unifilters.....I’ll cover off my thoughts in the upcoming videos.
Hi G
You will be up for passenger side turbo more than likely as well
This has happened to two friends of mine just recently
I installed a moonlight fabrication air box a while back for this very reason that the air box is poor build off the back of Toyota
Sorry to hear that it has also bit you and the missus.
All will be revealed in the next 2 episodes.....but yeah mate, bang on the money.....did both snails & along with a bunch of other stuff too.
How much dust does it take to cause this sort of issue?
I don’t believe it’s a measurable quantity....in my case it’s been an accumulation of damage over a long period of time, it’s not like it’s happened over night, all of a sudden.
Thanks very much for your reply. I have a cruiser as well and have noticed some dust getting on the clean side of the airbox just recently even though I use a genuine air filter - it is a very worrying sign and as you say, hard to measure. Fair to say for I plan to deal with it as quickly as you can I guess. Thanks for putting your video up and alerting us to this type of issue. Even though it was a worst-case scenario for your vehicle, you took it like a boss. All the best in the future for your travels.@@great_offroad_adventures
Run it into the ground.
Take a sat phone so you can still do remote travel.
Best bet is to leave it where the local fauna may want to take it.
Run into ground then chuck new engine in.
I may be wrong but dust on the inside of the air box lid would be normal. On the other side of the filter would be wrong.
That’s a lot of work to even get to the glow plugs! Toyota lost its way after the 1hdfte that doesn’t even have glow plugs!
Not wrong - it’s a full day to do just the compression check.
Great Off-Road Adventures - Graham Reinders big job on the 1hdfte motor too as you can only test through the injector holes requires the injectors to be removed about a 4 hour job.
Good luck with the fix, I’d personally put it back together and just run it as is. Still have 7 cylinders doing their thing!
