When i first landed in Chicago in 1990 also with United ( DC 10-30 ) i couldn't believe what i saw. So many runways and taxiways. Typical American airport layout with crossing runways. We don't have that in Europe.

they were not too lazy to do it, the airlines that wanted the -10 did not want it to be too different from the -9. They basically wanted a larger -9
