    So you use the terminology of "beginner tool box, which kind of makes it sound like a professional mechanic shouldn't look at this. As a master mechanic, and owning one of the Snap-On master series tool boxes, I'd say that this is just as good of quality.

    • @poonbandit9924
      @poonbandit9924 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does look pretty decent. For me (one ASE master to another) I know that you know why you chose your snap on master series. It’s the same reason I got my MAC macsmizer, made in America, you know it will last forever, the tool truck comes by weekly, it was delivered to your shop, if you have a roller in a drawer go bad it get replaced. It’s the little things that make the others better then this, would I have a problem using this as my at home box absolutely not in fact I have one but it’s a two bay at home, would i rather it be a snappy, max or matco absolutely.

    • @RedShiftedDollar
      @RedShiftedDollar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poonbandit9924 You have good points. Snap on includes amazing delivery and warranty service with their products, so when you pay the inflated price, it’s not just a box, it’s a box with the white glove treatment. But at home you aren’t getting the tool truck coming around to check on you. You also don’t have the same time is money dynamic that makes support services especially valuable to a professional who’s on the clock. For these reasons it makes sense not to pay for these services you can’t leverage effectively. Box for box, the ICON seems too good to be true because you get more or similar, and you pay way less.

    • @DaroffApFire
      @DaroffApFire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@poonbandit9924 I mean. The reason I chose my master series box is because Icon wasn't a thing yet. Looking at this tool box, looking at all of the specs, looking at the build quality. It's just as good, if not a little better than my snap-on master series. And I have no doubts whatsoever that it would last several lifetimes as an heirloom quality storage item (properly taken care of of course), just like my master series from snap-on.

      The main reason most people get took truck boxes is just for the name. Your paying the extra thousands just to have that tool truck glued on your box. I own a cornwell and snap on box honestly the icon is just as good or even better. For everyone who doesn’t know icon toolboxes are made by one of snap ons engineer.

  • @RedShiftedDollar

    The ICON is a legit toolbox. Fit and finish is on point. Thick steel, nice trim, nice paint, quality everywhere. And the true hallmark of quality? They went full boar even in the parts you don’t see. Pull a drawer out and look inside. Fully painted interior, full supports everywhere, thick steel in even the hidden areas. Locking mechanisms are strong. Look underneath and you find full paint and massive unchannel frame running the length of the box with beefy castors attached. The side cabinets are literally heavier duty than some gun safes. Even the bits you are supposed to discard like the end cabinet shipping wheels and the hutch template for drilling holes are fully finished and painted pieces made of thick steel. This thing is SOLID.

    I've been a ASE certified master tech for 28 years now and I just sold my snap-on master series box that I've had for 14 years and I bought the icon 73 inch box and I like it better than my snap-on master series box. To me it's built just as good as any of the tool truck ones.

    I wish this was around when I bought my craftsman almost 30 yrs. , I didn't even bother thinking about buying a snap on then, I just bought the their tools and they were right at home in the craftsman box. I eventually bought a much bigger Craftsman box and filled it with more tools from all brands. Wish I could've got this ICON, it's perfect even for beginner and even a journeyman or so owner

      Yep I really think its a good deal for the money, quality like Snap On/Mac/Matco but without the price.

    I've had mine for a year, very happy. Delivery was professional and hassle free and it came over a week early. I'm a full time tech, this is a professional level/quality box and I have no hesitation spending money to expand it with lockers and more drawers. My only complaint is the depth. I don't know how much more expensive it would have to be for it to be a full 30" deep. I'd gladly pay another grand for a deeper box, that said, I'm definitely not disappointed about spending what I did for the box I got.

    Nice review. It's good to see the pricing on these has gone down. I went with a used Mac and am more than happy but I would have given Icon some serious thought for less than 3 grand. Also you're definitely right about the channels under the drawers. I have an old husky that won't lock some of the drawers with more than maybe 50 pounds in them

    • @Tools-Tested
      @Tools-Tested  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! yeah if I remember correctly when they released them this box was listed for 6K, I feel bad for people that bought it at that price. HF seem to do that a lot, the new roll cart has already dropped a good amount. That's kind of cheesy in my book.
      Yeah was looking at the Husky but was concerned about the drawers handling the weight.

    I ordered my 73 inch today in green. I bought the hutch and locker too. I saved $1300 by taking advantage of president's day sale, my inside track and signing up for their credit card. My wife signed up for the inside track so I could get the discount on the hutch because they only allow the discount on one item. I guess I'll find a deserving friend or two to take my craftsman boxes that I've had for years. The only thing I'll miss is my collection of stickers on my old boxes. No stickers are going on the Icon. Perhaps a few magnetic ones will find their way attached to my new heirloom.

      Dang that’s got to be a lot of weight!
      I’m guessing that’s a 6 caster box?

      @@Tools-Tested yep it has 6 wheels. I have just moved the fixed wheels to the center spot on my box makes it more maneuverable at the cost of a lot of tail swing. Here is a links to how I move my toolbox and cart in the shop at the same time. Watch "cornwell Platinum move tool box and tool cart at same time." on TH-cam

      Too heavy. The wheels are really nice but there’s no getting around the amount of force it requires to get this massive toolbox moving. Plus if you have any kind of slope to the ground, gravity is going to pull surprisingly hard to make it want to roll down the grade. It will automatically start rolling at shallower angles than a lighter box would.

    Beginner toolbox? Haha most mechanics will only ever buy one of them in their life and be paying for it half of that because mechanics don't make enough to ever pay one off. 3k even 8k is outrageous.

    It’s only 25 inches deep. Not even worth purchasing that box.

      And SnapOns use cheap plastic drawer latches.
      Not even worth purchasing those either.

      Depends how your shop is laid out. My shop everyone has a set station but whoever set it up installed all the lifts too far forward. When you have a truck on the rack there’s very little room between your box and the vehicle. I have the icon and can barely fully open the drawers. My coworker has a snap on and can’t. Plus he’s a large fella and has to squeeze between the truck and his box.

      My box sadly was made in china, the hand tools seem to be all made in Taiwan.

    Should have bought a used Snap On box.. You get your equity out years later. Where these boxes are just Chinese Shit. You might get $700.00 back in 3-4 years. If you keep it clean...
    This is why Mac, Snap On are better value in the long run....

      Oh here we go with the re-sale crap. Look man I like American made better too, and clearly anyone buying one of these boxes would have bought snap on if there prices weren’t the cost of a new car. Do you buy everything worrying about what it’ll be worth later? Keep in mind we are talking about a tool box, it literally just holds tools. And these look good enough to me and offer a lot of features for the cost. If spending less on the “box” means I can buy more tools that actually make money, and this box lasts say 10 years how much money did you make over that time. And when that day comes to sell it, I’m sure difference won’t really matter. You can stand in the soup kitchen line with your snap on box, slaving away to pay for it. The rest of us are gonna get to work.

      @@fireguy8466 You damn right I do.. I look at not only cost but resale value.
      Why I keep more money in my pockets. As I don't piss it away on cheap shit.
      So yes I buy used Snap on box. I traded it in for $2,000.00 more in equity for newer one. And that one was used as well. As Only chumps pay retail cost..
      Have a nice. Economics class 101 is dismissed.

      @@WizzRacing economics 101? Let me ask do you own said tool box out right? You mentioned having equity in it so I’m guessing not. If you’re just leasing it, (which so many mechanics are) means you don’t own it and selling it is just paying a debt. Your so far ahead.
      Cheap shit? Definitely cheap enough that I can own it out right. Money I make with the tools that are in it, go to me. Not to someone I owe money to who’s charging interest to use money you didn’t have.

      @@fireguy8466 Please stop. I own Snap On, Ko-ken, Mac, PB Swiss, Autel etc...As they make me money. That tool box doesn't do shit but store tools. So why would you pay retail new prices for something. Just to store tools in it?
      And if someone sells a Snap On tool box for half price. I got the cash to pay for it up front. Use it then trade it in for a newer one or bigger one.
      That is how people keep more of their money. In their own pockets. Called economics. Maybe take a class on it. You might end up wealthier in the future and not broke...
      That or run for office. That way you got your hands in other peoples pockets..
      Good Day
