*NOTE:* This was a pre-production model. On the final production version, the ammeter *does in fact control the laser tube power.* The video is over a year old, and *the K40 laser Monport sells today would never get my recommendation!* It's a much lower quality and there are a lot of user issues.
Hmm. I wish you would have mentioned that before in the comments.. People take your advice very seriously and I might have made another choice when I knew this before. Anyway, no worries, we’ll see! Thanks!
Thanks for this review, the thing is that when you say that it’s a good machine, it is a good machine. I just ordered one as an extra machine next to my 22W diode laser. Thanks again!
As far as I'm concerned...Rich, you should have gotten those other Mono Port machine free. It's called free advertisement for them and you are giving them free RND. You are ONE of the best educators in the Laser community IMO.😎🍻✌🏽
Great covering of the laser from opening to using. Thanks again. I may be looking at one after Christmas unless they have a special. Inflation is killing my retirement.
Great review and very timely. I'm just getting my diode laser dialed in, and I can see a 40W CO2 unit in the near future. Closed loop cooling is definitely the way to go. If I understand correctly, the CW300 is essentially a fan cooled radiator and not a true refrigeration based chiller. You could easily add a series peltier chiller, power supply & thermostat for around $100 to get better cooling in high ambient conditions.
This just what I was looking for. I got the 40W laser from your link, now set up and working great. I got the CW-3000 to save a little cash. I am looking forward to getting an air assist and the platform upgrade as soon as you put out those videos. Scissor jacks arrive tomorrow. I am looking for a steel bed so I can use magnets. Thanks again for all the great information.
What is the correct method to ensure you are setting the correct power % on this laser? The Monport manual says : “Laser Power Display: This displays the current power of the laser as a percent of its maximum intensity. Adjust this setting accordingly to process various material s . For most material s, an intensity between 20% and 60% i s optimal . when aligning the laser beam, you should use a setting lower than 30% for safety reasons . Remember: Running your laser tube above 70% power can significantly shorten the laser tube's lifetime (We recommend staying below 70% power to prolong the life of your laser tube)” So I can only assume there are 2 ways to run the power on this machine. (1) If you run the power knob like the manual says, you then must use 100% for all operations IN THE SOFTWARE, and thus control the % of power with the knob (and make sure it never goes above 60% or you damage your laser tube). - OR - (2) Turn the knob to 100%, and control actual % of power via the software settings. Since my Monport K40 power display shows mA, and NOT % of power, so I’m not sure how you can set “20% to 60%” power (as per the manual) by using the display gauge. Any folks out there have the actual answer as to which method is correct? Thanks
Good Review And yes to a chiller always. I have a new 100 watt laser now and would never think about just a pump. and a pale of water. Tubes are pricey item don't to be replacing that every few month. Great Video Cheers
This was great and perfectly timed. I just got mine delivered the other day and I now feel confident and understand how to set it up and start running it. Thanks so much Rich. And oh yeah by the way, I did buy the CW300 chiller with it and am so glad I did!
I just ordered the laser a few minutes ago. Thanks for the coupon code. For now I'm going to have to make an ice machine chiller. I'll go back and watch tour video on that before I get started on it. Awesome stuff. (Except you make me spend money when I'm trying to save it, lol)
I have since found that *some* of the lasers are have different ammeters. Some have no control other than the test button, and others do. On the ones that do control the power, I have found that line 4 is about the right setting. Remember to never exceed 17mA on the meter! UPDATE: My laser came with the Yongli tube, but apparently the company is still in negotiation regarding price. As of today, the Monport K40 does NOT come with the Yongli tube! *Don't forget to click on Show More above for a 10% discount code if you're in the market for a Co2! The coupon code has been fixed for the package deal* 🌞
@@corywhittaker4109 you don't want that chiller anyway. Much better to do what I'm doing and make a chiller from a ice maker and pump. He's got a video on it. Under a g indeed bucks and wo rd KS waasay better than the add on with the 670ish package. With the discount y the laser is under 500....Can't be beat.
Hey there. I just ordered one of these and can't wait. I've been a diode user for a couple years, so I'm anxious to get my hands dirty with CO2. I was wondering if you shared your CLB files, or sell them? I figure it would at least be a great starting point for me. Thanks!!
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thank you! I just got the unit and have it unboxed. It's been in the teens and 20's in my garage so I haven't set it up yet, but plan to this weekend. Are you still removing the installed vent fan and just using an inline extractor? On my airbrush booth I use both, but after seeing your video removing it I thought about traying that to see if my extraction rate increased. The inline didn't seem to help at all. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
1:54 First thing I did with my old K40 was get rid of that cut surface, table, work area. What ever you want to call it. LOL It just got in the way. I like the updates to this one. USB C. Lightburn board. Nice.
I know this is an older video, but it was a nice understanding of the CO2 laser however been nice to know if it can cut acrylic 4mm or so and where to buy the machine? Thanks for the video Mike E.
I figured it could, on other videos I have seen. Where's the best place to buy one with a standard chiller the ones I looked at on ebay I lightburn ready but I think you have to buy lightburn. Maybe you have to buy it separate license for lightburn?. @@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks RHJ Gold Mfg Mike E.
Great review Sir! Just an FYI, your discount code only works for the basic model for $529. I was going to buy the machine with the CW 3000 chiller. Living in Canada makes this purchase ridiculously expensive. Shipping for the water cooler is $250.... more than the cooler is worth. I have no intention of finding out how much shipping is on the laser lol. I still appreciate you review! Thanks again
As it is with anything computer related, you have to watch a few videos. This one covered almost everything I wanted to know. What I didn't learn about is how framing the project is done. Are there stops, hold downs or something inside that will help with alignment? Or is this like every other entry level device where the 90 degree corners may not be 90 degrees? Is there another video on alignment?
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thanks, it points me in the right direction at least lol I couldn’t find anywhere in the manuals for the k40 or the light burn controller board what connection type I need or what to look for
Rich, after watching all your Monport videos and a few others(must admit but yours are so much more professional and informative), my wife ordered straight from Monport with Lightburn card and cw3000 chiller. Should be here in about 10 days. Can’t wait to get it. Since I’ve never used co2, I figured best way to learn is get these best inexpensive, see if I can make more money then upgrade. I have two xTool diodes. Love them. I have never had to call support #1 is I’m a former process automation maintenance superintendent at a shipyard so I understand cnc and I’ve upgraded both with drag chains and non xTool air assists and use a senco 1 gallon air compressor. I’ll definitely be getting the air assist laser head you put on. One question, does lens size matter between 18 and 20? Really need your advise on that
The CW3000 is not a chiller, it's just a radiator with fans. I would try and cancel that and just buy a 5200 off eBay or Walmart. Yes, the lens size matters.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy it’s already shipped. I’m in an air conditioned room. Hope that will be all right. I hope you don’t mind asking another question, but looking at laser head with air Assist one has 3 different lenses and was wondering what each size does. Thank you Rich, I know your busy and all
Great video! I’m new to the laser world. Just bought the Atezr 36 watt, it should be here Thursday. I’m diving in head first and want to buy one of these as well. I know this video is older, is there a current model with all the upgrades you suggested? Also, would a water filter hooked to the chiller help? Thanks for any input and for the informative video.
I would start with the diode laser for now. Once you get the hang of it, it'll be better. There's supposed to be a K40 style Co2 coming in Jan... I would wait for that one.
Hi Rich, Thank you so much for this video, at this moment i am at the website of monport to buy a CO2 laser, also thank you for the coupon code, i have a question can i use a rotary with this machine? Thank you…. Hope you can help me with this ..
No, there is no roller accessory port and you can't use the standard Co2 2 or 3-phase rollers with it. This is a fixed Z machine, so there would be no way to focus it, even if you used a custom wired diode roller.
It's the first comment under the video. I got an upgraded version with no issues. They changed the model after my review to one I hear lots of quality complaints on.
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks for responding so quickly. I canceled through my bank. Guess I will stick to my cricut. Can't afford the other engraving machines n scared of buying a crappy machine.
Nice review. Looks like a good unit and I may look at getting one. My main reason for still using a diode laser is that I live 90% of the year in a travel trailer on the road so I'm limited on space.
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but you do not want to put steel in the laser path, since it neatly 100% reflective, while aluminum is almost non-reflective. Besides being a safety issue, it is bad for the cuts, since the beam chars the back a lot more. That is why laser cutter beds are made out of aluminum.
Polished steel is a bad idea Edward, but there are lots of steel accessories, like magnetic honeycomb beds for example. Lots of materials are reflective, including some wood. It all depends on the finish.
Hey bud every time I try to Mahe a cut my laser says you might be cutting out of bounds and my laser won't cut at all so you possibly know how to fix that
Hello Rich, you mentioned adding a few drops of Dawn dishwashing soap and Algicide to the chiller. Any particular algicide needed? Pool, Pound, Fish tank type? TIA
With the rate exchange the laser and chiller is $1 241,49 cdn, and this does not include import fees and taxes…Would like to buy but, this is way over my budget
Gotta move south of the border Gerald! I have a relative that lives in Ontario and has his Amazon packages shipped to my nephew in Detroit. Canada sure isn't friendly with their customs fees!
Point of note: the wires are not soldered nor are they Hot glued to the tube terminals because that heat would destroy the tube. Silicon sealant is used to connect them.
Hi Rich, I just purchased this 40k monport, question I have is the air pump is always on any way I can control it from lightburn, i turn off from lightburn for engrave and still on, any advice please…. Thank you
I don't know if the Monport control board supports it, but if you go to the Device Settings and click on the GCode tab, type, M8 for On in the Start GCode and M9 for Off in the End GCode.
Amazon seems to be the one selling the K40 now in the UK at just over £400. looking at the review it also seems to work with lightburn which my old k40 never did (not sure if they are running in-between software or if the k40 has an upgraded controller board (like I did to mine with a minigbrl.). The k40 on ebay from UK suppliers is nil which is where they used to be sold in their hundreds. Guess Brexit just made it too difficult for people sending things to the UK for them to bother with.
Hello from the UK.. And thank you for a fabulous video.... You have nearly convinced me to buy the Monport 40w CO2 laser.. as it looks just about right for me to start a business with...(upgrading as I go) I am a complete newbie and I am learning loads... I wanted a pass through, I wanted a diode as I thought CO2 were dirty and dusty, needing the exhaust out of a window (I intend to use and spare first floor bedroom) and a bucket of water I could fall over or spill, I also wanted air assist....(all these things learned from You tube where I've come across you!) I want these things because I think I need them... What I really want is the best (inexpensive not cheapest) route to market! And the Monport may just be it... couple of questions... Provided I can get it delivered to the UK! 1... can a complete newbie cope with the set up and successfully use a CO2 laser as they seem far more complicated than Diode? ( I am quite DIY competent) 2...where can I buy the 5200 chiller? ( as I would be keen to buy the light-burn compatible one and a better separate chiller) 3.. Am I able to add an air assist unit to the laser, and what would you recommend I use?4...What is a C.O.B file? 5...What else should I need? (apart from supplies obviously!) I have never used a laser engraver but have been researching the business for a few months since I retired from my "lifetime business" Owning and running my own Hotel. I think this would be fun, but I would do a lot more than a hobbyist, I would like a successful retirement business. I am quite techy and arty so I would actually look forward to learning the artwork set up. Sorry this is a long comment. I guess I'm just excited !!
I am having the worst time with this machine. I got all of the mirrors adjusted and got the laser to fire but then the top led doesn’t work and my mA doesn’t adjust at all. I tried to follow your video for making sure the max is at 70% and that’s when I realized it wouldn’t change numbers when I turned it. Any tips? I feel like I am totally missing something.
Unfortunately, they used several suppliers for the ammeter, so some of them need to be turned all the way up. It could also be a bad ammeter, or connection. Try unplugging the Ethernet cable from the ammeter to the power supply and plugging it back in again.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy are you saying the current pro version with all it's upgrade still has a lot of issues? or were you refering to the non-pro version at the time of this video?
Thanks for the review - I was going to go Omtech but this already has the upgrades I would have done. This would be my first CO2 laser - I have an Xtool D1 - the issue I have is the cost of the chiller is the same cost as the laser unit. For non-industrial use (short to medium jobs from time to time) would an aquarium pump in a 5 gallon bucket with water be a good enough chiller?
If I have light burn for the X tool d1, and I buy the $669 package with the cheaper chiller will I or will I need to do anything else to use it with light burn burn?
Nice review ! looks like a solid unit . lots of upgrades compared to others . I'm looking to expand into a 80 watt co2, and i was set on purchasing a omtech 80 . But after watching this review im torn between the monport 80 and the omtech 80 . Now i cant decide which machine to buy ... ??? Any suggestions ?
Rich, it looks like Monport has made a few changes.. All of the K40 CO2 lasers on Amazon suddenly disappeared.. And all of the K40 on their site are now $200 more expensive.. But they include air assist.. I would MUCH rather save the $200 and add air assist myself. I would only need the new nozzle.. Have you heard anything about this??
It appears they have made some changes, I don't know. I'm not affiliated with them anymore due to their lack of customer support, which is virtually nonexistent now.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy I got a reply from the email I sent them. They said : Besides the air assist, here are other upgraded points. 1. The laser head is adjustable for 0.75". The laser head, the first and second mirror holders have been improved to the ones with better quality. 2. The Industrial grade linear guide is added for stable reason. 3. The water temperature is powered by the power supply, not the batteries. 4. The motherboard is our nano replacement board.
Hey Rich! Will you have a new Lightburn library file for this laser? I checked the forums and the one that I'm seeing is the older laser that has the previous-generation anmeter on it where you can set it to a certain percentage there, which you mention isn't used on this model.
Just got one of these for Christmas, and it does not have the Yongli tube. Thats disappointing. Anyway, I was looking for your update clb file you worked out here, but couldn't find it. I am guessing you didn't release it as your machine is not representative of shipping products. Is the clb for the older monport 40 the one to start with? thanks
Yes, I was also disappointed to find out they didn't include the Yongli tube in the final version 🥹 The clb on the forum is for the old version and should work fine.
I'm interested in this laser as well as the Atezr 24W Laser (or the later 35W). I am looking to do mostly leather patches for hats. Are the diode and CO2 lasers power (actual cutting/engraving capability) watt vs. watt the same? Thanks.
You had me sold, I was getting all excited about trying out CO2 engraving and cutting as well as my diode laser, then I saw the shipping ! Any suggestions for those of us not Stateside ? There are many choices of K40 units available. Thanks
Hi and thanks for all the work you put into these videos! Can you please do a video about the console and what the different values mean? I’ve found conflicting information with regard to settings in the console for the k40 LB model. Thank you
I am trying to sort out getting a K40 CO2 laser (Monport) compared to getting a 20W diode laser engraver (XTool). Do you have any information on how much quicker a K40 CO2 is compared to 20W laser diode in cutting & engraving? I primarily will be working with wood. I appreciate any insights or thoughts. And thanks for the great videos!
I know you have the inside information I’m going to order the new one today it says pre order and ship on the 7th is that true of will it take a lot longer to get it

2 questions. First, there's a strip of clean pack9ng tape on the cannister in the back. I'm assuming I should remove that, though I'm afraid of breaking the glass. Also, can I run it for a short period of time without the chiller? The chiller is delayed a couple of weeks but I'm eager to get started! Thanks.
No, leave the tape on. And no, you cannot run it without water. What you can do is, get a very clean 5 gal bucket and add 2 gal of distilled water to it, plus a couple of drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid. Hook up the water pump that came in the little white box to the water lines and drop it in the bucket. Now you'll have water flowing through the tube. Make sure to run the pump for a long time, a few hours, until all the bubbles are out of the tube. You cannot run it with air bubbles in the tube. th-cam.com/video/yh8umKqn21U/w-d-xo.html
Great video and explanation Rich. I've been weighing the Monport against the Atzer 24W realizing the inherent differences between CO2 and diode. One question - Was the wood test on the oak a solid oak piece or an oak veneer?
Rich, I have the Monoport lightburn co2 laser. I will be trying to setup a camera. I have to setup a camera. I use one on my other laser and it is so usefull. Do you have any good ideals on where and how to mount one? I will want to use a 1080p or higher, with wide angl I supose. Any help would be great. Thank you in advance for you quick responce. I love your videos. You are my go to Guy for laser information.
I don't know anything about CO2 as I've only worked with diode so this is a good review. One thing that bugs me though is that as a good ole boy I only speak inches and fractions so your mm stuff is just confusing to me.
Hi I'm hoping to get one of these is it true that you will need to clean the glass on the lens And mirrors near enough every time You use it, Plus does Air assist Keep the lens Cleaner And does it help to cut Like the dio laser thanks
Nise video rich as usual, I would love to try my monport trouble is I ordered and payed for it nearly 3months ago, last news I got from monport was I should expect delivery the second week in December. Shocking.
I contacted Monport to get it fixed. It might be because accessories aren't included in the code. You may have to add them separately. I'll let you know when they reply to me Rick.
Well now I really can’t decide which one I want. I currently have ORTUR Laser Engraver, Laser Master 2 S2 LF, 20W Laser Engraving but it is so slow. I need speed and I need to be able to cut more media. I like monport but I feel like the work space is so limited 8 x 12 that doesn’t leave me a lot of options as far as cutting boards that I make and engrave. I’m thinking about the laser you use regularly. What is your opinion about this? You have helped out so much.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy well you have basically taught everything I know thus far so I'm going with the Atezr I can't afford $3000 on a laser just yet but I will save with the money I get from these laser..thank you so much
New Monport 40-Watt Co2 Laser controller board uses a type C connection. Any success using an adaptor or dongle adaptor USB-C port into a Computer using USB 3.0 type A connection?
Also. You know of a steel waste grid that can be retrofitted to this K40 utilizing the scissor-jack? And yes. Monport K40 is a good value. However, company customer service is not.
Rich, I heard you say early in this video that we didn't need to worry about the control knob on the mA meter. I can't engrave or cut anything with lightburn unless I have the knob turned all the way up to Max. Am I doing something wrong ?
No james, Lightburn controls the power, but the dial on the ammeter does also work. As I understand it, there are two types of ammeters used in the first two batches. One has to be all the way on, and the other is adjustable. But both are governed to 21mA to protect the tube.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuyI also found out the I've been using my Diode laser and set up Lightburn for "best used with diode lasers" and didn't change it when I set up the K40. Got the bugs worked out now. Creativity is running wild !!
Rich, I just returned my Atomstack A20 after about 3 weeks because of some engraving imperfections (I played with belt tensioning, but it was still inconsistent) and speed (it took over an hour for 4"x4" fill engraving). I am torn between trying a different 20w diode or upgrading to CO2. Do you think the Atezr 24W will be a significantly faster or just better, in general, than the Atomstack 20w? Also, how difficult is it to add air assist to the Monport 40w? Thanks for the great content!
The A20 Pro comes from the factory set at 6000 mm/min top speed. You can go into the machine settings and change it to 12000. That's the max speed for this unit. I'm actually testing one right now. Edit --> Machine Settings change the $111 and $112 both to 12000 and then click Write to controller. Air assist is easy, you just need to change the laser head on the 40W.
Fireman LSU, NR EMT-P, MS computer science UNO, BS graphic art Tulane, LED master engineer (company cert) and 2 State recognition awards. I have some I haven't put up yet.
Long time watcher, first time commenter. I’m just about there on pulling the trigger on this unit. Question, if I take all of the bed stuff out, will it accommodate my Ortur YRR rotary?
Yes John, it works the same way. You just unplug the Y and plug in the rotary. However, you do need to remove all the aluminum bed and standoffs, which everyone does anyway. The Ortur is not the best pick for a rotary though because it's so tall. Monport has a low profile rotary on their website for the 40W.
Rich, Im a new subscriber and would like to thank you for the tips in Lightburn. I have been running Epilog CO2 lasers for many years, and recently purchased the Xtool D1 for my "at home-non business" use enjoyment. My Epilogs run off of Corel Draw, and thats what I'm accustomed to. The transition to Lightburn has been relatively painless with one small exception. In Corel, you have the ability to "cut out" a portion of a graphic so the laser can make a second pass on a specific area without having to redo the entire thing. This is useful to fix a small error or other unplanned mistakes. I see no cut tool or eraser for this purpose. Am I missing something? BTW, It's nice to see your from NO-I grew up not far from you, and love the city-Go Saints.
Yes, if you design in layers, then you can turn off the layers you don't want to burn for a 2nd pass, or just select a portion of the graphic (ungrouped) and tic off, Cut Selected graphics Kenneth.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Understood. So if the graphic thats imported is non-layered, your stuck. There is no Cut and or Erase tool...crap. Thank you kind sir.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanx Rich. I have been chatting with the software developers at Lightburn and they are suggesting Mask or Boolean Subtract to do what I want. I have found a way by converting the graphic to "Paths" or "Curves" as its called in Corel, and add Nodes around what I want to re-trace, then deleting everything else around it. It's the long way around and will only work when dealing with Vectors. Lets say you have a dithered photo you want to etch. Its not layered, and its not a group. In other words, its a raster image not a vector. Then what? Without an erase or cut tool, your stuck. You would have to process it through Photoshop, then import into Lightburn, hope you get it lined up exactly, and then burn the portion a second time. A cut/erase tool eliminates all that hassel.
@@kennethrich2107 I don't see why masking the image wouldn't work. If you don't flatten the image after the masking it will keep the same origin point from the original and just burn what you want. Thanks for the idea of re-burning just a portion. Never thought of that myself.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy the reason I asked was I have an counter top ice maker that I am going to have to replace or fix the gears in it. I think it is a good excuse to use it as a chiller.
I no longer use the chiller for the laser. I went to an ice maker because the chiller was allowing the temperature of the water to run over 32 degrees Celsius on a hot summer day. I swap out the distilled water about once a month. Avoid the chiller with a passion cuz it's a joke if you're in a hot climate. Cuz all it does is cool your water to ambient temperature
I have a video on using an ice maker. *However,* be careful with that! A Co2 laser is meant to be operated in an HVAC controlled environment! Lowering the temp of the water more than 5° below ambient room temp can cause condensation inside the tube. Operating the laser this way can/will cause micro _"short downs"_ and use up a *lot more* of the Co2 in the tube, meaning much a shorter life span. The chiller is designed to prevent this. And then you could always go into manual mode instead of intelligent mode and set the on/off temps to whatever you want.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy My point is not given a choice between bacterial growth in your water or having the laser tube well over its operating temperature. I choose the bacterial growth cuz that's an easy fix. Currently my laser in a room with no heat. I have a 50 watt aquarium heater to bring the water up to temperature. I could get a higher wattage aquarium heater but with 50 watts I'm not worried about thermal shock on the glass. Sure I'd love to have a large heated garage, but that's not going to happen soon or ever. The lazer tubes are not that expensive for the k40 or replacing the laser. It's just the price of doing business. And when my current project starts making money I should be able to write off the next laser. My project requires not only the lazer but a CNC machine, a 3d printer, a vacuum former and a braille printer.
Hmm, this changes things. A newbie (me) can get into the game and start practicing Lightburn for less than an Atezer L2 diode. But if I need the more expensive chiller the prices are getting closer...so...My shop in not climate controlled, (unless you accept that God ultimately in control), does temp/humidity play a role in selecting the 3000 vs the 5200? I'm in PA, so no extreme weather. Thanks, and I not only enjoy your videos, but also when another YTer cited your opinion as fact to shut-up a critic! haha
Yes, you need the CW5200 because it has a compressor. The 3000 is just a radiator with fans blowing across it. However, ambient temperature plays a role as well. You have to leave the 5200 in intelligent mode, so it keeps the temp within 5° of the ambient, or else you can run into problems with condensation inside the tube.
Oh man.I wish I watched this video before I bought my omtech. I think I can make due. Also, do you buy chance have a brother named robert? I live in Louisiana around New Orleans and you remind me so much of this guy I know who's a plumber.
No I'm not Chris. I would stay far away from Monport products though. Their support is nonexistent and the machines need lots of support due to the poor quality.
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy The support was the reason I decided to go with the omtech. That said I don't think there's a machine that can beat me Or I would have had to spend a lot more on one that just works. I decided to take a chance and just build it out into what I want It to be. @@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy hi rich as I'm in the UK there is no supplier close by. I contacted monport direct and they said they can ship from factory. Is this something you would recommend
I would probably say no because of the price of the shipping, but get a quote and see. Ten-High is a really good manufacturer that ships to the UK but they are a little pricy. Cloudraylaser.com may also have something, I know they do have K40s if you use the search feature.
I for one, trust you. I know you gotta say the Promotion disclosure. But I know your reviews are honest. Thanks for that BTW! I bought my Z1 and OMTech K40 based on your reviews. I did the gutting too. Link on the Scissor Jack? I tried an 8x8 but it was too tall and was above the Focal distance 50.8mm from the lens and had to return it. So am interested in the one you found. Also used the Comgrow Rotary on the K40+ MB successfully.
The laser comes with a water pump. You get a clean bucket, pour in 2 gallons of distilled water and use that for cooling the tube. You add bottles of frozen water to the bucket as necessary. Not a good method, but it's the method most people use.
Did you just press the Test button without pressing the Door Switch and it FIRED? That’s not good. I didn’t see any tape on the switch either. Did I miss something or is the Safety, Door switch not functioning? (Scared).
Thanks!

Great covering of the laser from opening to using. Thanks again. I may be looking at one after Christmas unless they have a special. Inflation is killing my retirement.
Awesome Merrill!
Yep, or go with the CW5200 like I did.
Glad I could help Steve!
What is the correct method to ensure you are setting the correct power % on this laser?
The Monport manual says :
“Laser Power Display: This displays the current power of the laser as a percent of its maximum intensity. Adjust this setting accordingly to process various material s . For most material s, an intensity between 20% and 60% i s optimal . when aligning the laser beam, you should use a setting lower than 30% for safety reasons .
Remember: Running your laser tube above 70% power can significantly shorten the laser tube's lifetime (We recommend staying below 70% power to prolong the life of your laser tube)”
So I can only assume there are 2 ways to run the power on this machine. (1) If you run the power knob like the manual says, you then must use 100% for all operations IN THE SOFTWARE, and thus control the % of power with the knob (and make sure it never goes above 60% or you damage your laser tube).
- OR -
(2) Turn the knob to 100%, and control actual % of power via the software settings.
Since my Monport K40 power display shows mA, and NOT % of power, so I’m not sure how you can set “20% to 60%” power (as per the manual) by using the display gauge.
Any folks out there have the actual answer as to which method is correct? Thanks

🤪 The icemaker chiller worked awesome!

This is a 2 year old video, a little out of date, but the principals still work. It should give you some ideas on framing Greg.
So the smoke exhaust is not the greatest on the Monport K40 Pro. How do i make it better where it removes all of the smoke and fumes from acrylic?
I removed the fan and use an inline fan.
Can you suggest a rotary for this k40? The one monoort sells is out of stock and I’d like to pick one up
K40's use a regular diode laser roller Christopher. Monport doesn't have those. The xTool RA2 is my favorite by far.

No, there is no roller accessory port and you can't use the standard Co2 2 or 3-phase rollers with it. This is a fixed Z machine, so there would be no way to focus it, even if you used a custom wired diode roller.

Hi, can the temperature displays be toggle to Fahrenheit ?
No, I bought new ones that display F.
Hey bud every time I try to Mahe a cut my laser says you might be cutting out of bounds and my laser won't cut at all so you possibly know how to fix that
Use absolute coordinates instead, or home the laser between jobs. If you move the laser head by hand, you'll always have this issue.
Hello Rich, you mentioned adding a few drops of Dawn dishwashing soap and Algicide to the chiller. Any particular algicide needed? Pool, Pound, Fish tank type?

Gotta move south of the border Gerald! I have a relative that lives in Ontario and has his Amazon packages shipped to my nephew in Detroit. Canada sure isn't friendly with their customs fees!
Is there anyway to increase the workspace?
Not that I know of.
Point of note: the wires are not soldered nor are they Hot glued to the tube terminals because that heat would destroy the tube. Silicon sealant is used to connect them.
The wires are twisted onto the terminals and together. I never heard of anyone soldering them.
Hi Rich, I just purchased this 40k monport, question I have is the air pump is always on any way I can control it from lightburn, i turn off from lightburn for engrave and still on, any advice please…. Thank you

Great review! Good entry level Co2 laser. shipping cost to the UK would probably eat into any savings for a 5200 chiller
Absolutely David 🤪
Amazon seems to be the one selling the K40 now in the UK at just over £400. looking at the review it also seems to work with lightburn which my old k40 never did (not sure if they are running in-between software or if the k40 has an upgraded controller board (like I did to mine with a minigbrl.). The k40 on ebay from UK suppliers is nil which is where they used to be sold in their hundreds. Guess Brexit just made it too difficult for people sending things to the UK for them to bother with.
hi, are you using this on a daily basis?
No, not for over a year now. I did for a good while though.
( I am quite DIY competent)
2...where can I buy the 5200 chiller? ( as I would be keen to buy the light-burn compatible one and a better separate chiller)
3.. Am I able to add an air assist unit to the laser, and what would you recommend I use?4...What is a C.O.B file?
5...What else should I need? (apart from supplies obviously!)
I have never used a laser engraver but have been researching the business for a few months since I retired from my "lifetime business" Owning and running my own Hotel.

I don't see the link for this laser in your description.
I don't recommend this laser anymore. Too many issues and nonexistent support.
Any possibility of an expansion kit that will allow 36 inch material (L to R). Depth of unit is fine. I’m used to the NEJE3 max size bed
Not on the Co2.
Aren't they including all these upgrades now on the PRO version?
There was no pro version when I made this video. I can tell you that nobody is happy with it, and it has a LOT of issues.
Yeah, probably, but I don't run the bucket method for reasons stated in the video.

Well Monport makes Co2 lasers in all sizes Sandy based on your budget. So far, the best and fastest diode in my opinion is the Atezr 24W.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy well you have basically taught everything I know thus far so I'm going with the Atezr I can't afford $3000 on a laser just yet but I will save with the money I get from these laser..thank you so much
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Rich, how does the Atezr 24W stack up against the Atomstack 20W?
New Monport 40-Watt Co2 Laser controller board uses a type C connection. Any success using an adaptor or dongle adaptor USB-C port into a Computer using USB 3.0 type A connection?
No, and for some unknown reason, a USB 3 cable doesn't work properly on any Grbl laser.
Also. You know of a steel waste grid that can be retrofitted to this K40 utilizing the scissor-jack?
And yes. Monport K40 is a good value. However, company customer service is not.
Yes, this is the one I use: amzn.to/3hmctPU
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Darn. I Need to use magnets.
Hey Rich just curious what those certs on your wall are for?
Thank you Rich! That was the only thing holding me back on going ahead and getting it.
No, you're not Kenneth. Select it, ungroup it, and then select the parts you want to run again and tick off Cut Selected Graphics.
@@kennethrich2107
I don't see why masking the image wouldn't work. If you don't flatten the image after the masking it will keep the same origin point from the original and just burn what you want.
Thanks for the idea of re-burning just a portion. Never thought of that myself.
What happened to your link to the monoport
It's there Joseph.
Since you were talking about chillers...did you ever get very far with building a chiller out of the counter top icemaker?
Yeah, I did Kris. I tested it for 3 months and it did just as good as my CW 5200.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy the reason I asked was I have an counter top ice maker that I am going to have to replace or fix the gears in it. I think it is a good excuse to use it as a chiller.
@@krisknowlton5935 Sounds like a good reason to me too!
The price of convenience is very high these days. What changed your mind on the monport?
They stopped honoring the warranty for their customers.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Wow that's shady. I really appreciate the input and the warning. I live in Hammond and if you are interested in a VERY FANCY kazoo I would be happy to send you one in return for the help you have provided. look up "Applied Wizarding" online and you'll see me.
Thanks Chris, much appreciated! 👍 My address is under all my videos in the description.
can it cut 0.5 inch transparent acrylic?
Yep
When you take out the insides would it take a rotary
Yes, a low profile diode roller.

Thanks rich I just need to find away of getting 1 to the UK 🙈
Link is in the description.
I tried to order through the link added the disc code says its nit valid
Trying to get that fixed. The discount doesn't apply to accessories.
I tried the coupon code and it said it can't be used?
The coupon code can't be used with accessories Greg. They said laser machines only.
I checked the price and almost fell over. $550. That's crazy (good) for a CO2. The only problem I have is the small work area.
Yup, K40s are small.
Can’t afford the Chiller yet so still using the bucket… 😂
Try and keep it sealed!
Is the chiller mandatory? I'm a new diode guy, so I don't know Co2.
No, you can use the bucket method, but I advise against it.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy lol, don't even know what that is, Rich.
(Scared).
The pulse button bypasses all safety devices on all Co2 lasers that I have ever had.
Are you able to hook up a camera ?
Yes you can.
