I just salvaged an identical window unit myself, found sitting in my sons dad's apartment complex dumpsers...it works perfectly when I plugged it in to test it,haven't taken it apart yet,but wanted to watch a couple videos first. Thank you!
I have the exact unit found mine in the garbage/e-waste too! The compressor at first was just humming just like yours but I tapped the compressor with a hammer and it started working now it makes ice cold air!!
Had one of these at my old apartment. My mom wouldn’t let me bring it with us to the current apartment we live in. I believe she bought it new, sometime in the 90s.
We bought a house and the old owners left the same one. I'm trying to find out what filter to buy. It cooled the whole first floor of our house last summer but its taking longer this summer. Definitely overdue for a filter.
My grandparents used to have a similar unit in their living room. Theirs was the larger version with push buttons rather than a knob for the fan controls. The outside of it looked similar to a Fedders unit.
Great video Jordan on the late 80s era Amana Room air conditioner initial checkout I enjoy seeing these Vintage air conditioners I can't wait for part 2 which is the project video
that is awesome, I have always wanted an old Amana like that. I have always had a thing for Amana, our old house had some old Amana PTAC untis but i don't remember any more as i was little. sadly around where i live everyone has the central air conditioning and it is really hard to find window units at all much less anything vintage or worth while.
I like these as well; they do exactly what they're supposed to do, nothing more, nothing less. Around here there's quite a mix of new and old houses. Where I used to work had primarily old houses with no central.
Personally, I would have taken the case off, gave the front and back (avoid the controls) a good spraying off with a hose, and inspected the back before plugging it in and turning it on. You could check for a fuse and jump out the thermostat. It could also have been ran to death. I've got some air conditioners that I bought second hand that had dead electronics. I'm not a big fan of electronics in your air conditioner. I connected the compressor to be always on and the fan to the high wire. It's best to just run air conditioner fans on high. It makes them last longer. After that, I rigged up a central thermostat, a 12 volt coil/120 volt-10 to 30 amp relay, and a 12 volt power supply to operate it. It works very well like that. The air conditioner shuts off completely between cycles to also give the fan a rest and to cool off. It seems to make the air conditioner last longer too. They do make plug in thermostats now if you don't want to make a thermostat system with central thermostats, relays, power supplies. I often just use speaker wire for the thermostat line and put the thermostat wherever you want. You can only use analog or battery powered digital thermostats with a 12 vdc system. I guess you could get a 16vac thermostat transformer to power a line powered digital thermostat, but that would cost more.
I gave it a good enough visual inspection for me to be confident in powering it on. It doesn't appear to have that many hours on it. I do not like electronic controls either. I prefer the fan running continuously during normal cooling operation, and always let it run for a while before powering the machine off. Dries out the evaporator and cools the compressor and condenser.
I remember this one from the discord. Really nice unit. I never knew about these using Tecumseh rotaries, I have only ever seen one with a Toshiba rotary. This coolzone model was made from 1987-1994 I think, but they changed the grille design in 1991 I think. Also I'd assume that the issue here is a bad thermostat
Very nice unit. I fully assume the thermostat is the problem. I didn't hear any noise from the compressor so it's probably not getting power to it. Tecumseh compressors are very nice. Reciprocating will always be my preference but older rotary compressors aren't bad.

This one ended up needing a new thermostat, an inexpensive part certainly not worth discarding the whole machine over.
I have one in my house. Still works

Bummer. These were made up until the early-mid 90s I believe.

The filter should be cleaned every month or two, but more likely in your case it's the condenser (outdoor coil) that needs a cleaning.
One of the best units from the era! It's likely a simple fix like a run capacitor. I look forward to the diagnosis.
It was even easier than that!
I like how there are no vents on the top of the unit so water won't get in when it rains.
Me too. These older units were designed properly.
Looks like the one I have in my apartment 👀
Awesome video
Thanks

That was probably a 12,000 or 18,000 model.
That’s my favorite unit I hope I can get on but really enjoyed the video
Thanks for letting me know.
Can’t wait to see part 2 soon bro once you fix the compressor good video i enjoyed it
Thanks bro glad you enjoyed the video.

Do you know what causes it leak water
Tilting the unit more upwards will run the water into the house. Whereas if the unit was angled kind of downwards would let the water run outside.
Amazing unit!
Thanks!

That looks good
OK

The Jordan, I believe this machine would need to work harder to power on its internal compressor with the fan, than just the fan.
I hope it doesn't get too tired from the hard work.

This is a rotary compressor.
@@andrewg593 That's what I meant. Comment above has been edited
@@fanshvacandmore14 I'm rather surprised it's not a Matsushita compressor. I've seen far more of those rotaries than other brands.
@Andrew G those get used in these too yes
Toshiba made some great compressors back in the day, but I have no complains to be had about an American-made Tecumseh either.
It seems like DJ ENDIE09 has stopped bothering you
Right, so why bring him up again?

As much as I am no advocate of assumptions, I share the same suspicion.
Good video
Thanks
