This is absolutely the most complete correct video I needed for the exact mac I have. My memory and ssd come in next week. My mac takes about 2 minutes to load and forget actually editing anything on it. So I’m stuck using my phone for editing. I cannot wait! Thanks so much. Did you do a comparison video after changing the memory?
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the video. An SSD will bring it right back around. I never did a comparison video as it wasn't that much of an improvement. In fact I can't really tell a difference. The major improvement was from the SSD.
I got the RAM in yesterday and I swapped it out(couldn't wait to try it) and didn't see much improvement besides the percentage of memory used. I haven't had time to do much real testing, but I should be able to run more things at once. I'll probably put up a comparison video when I get time. They've got us back to work now, so not much time for videos.
@@lukeFugate you wont see much until you use intensive programmes like movie editing suites . Beginners don't know the bench tests meaning . Real world action they can taste it
When removing with the screws from the old HD and putting them into the new SSD do NOT do these operations over the open bottom of the MacBook. If you accidentally drop a screw you do not want to have to try to find it somewhere inside that case. If you do this over a hard surface like a desk or table the screw would likely bounce and end up in Never-Never land. Do that job over a soft surface like a towel. Good video. Thank you. Now I have to do that whole task myself.
Great suggestion on the towel. It would also help to keep from scratching the case. I have dropped screws into the case before. With the battery unhooked it wasn't ever a problem, and I just flipped it over and shook the screw out. Good point though. If someone was to forget to unhook the battery it could cause problems.
Thanks for your help! I’ve got the error 5342, but solved the issue like this: I eventually found the problem - the new ssd had been configured with a MBR partition table, not GPT. To fix this go to the View menu and choose Show All Devices. Then select the external device at the top level and click erase. This should allow you to choose MBR or GPT partition schemes.
Thanks Luke!!! worked on my 2014 Mac Mini with Catalina. This is better than using superduper or carbon copy! No error message , no issues. Booted up fast , well its a 1T ssd so there.
Great video! Have ordered SSD and memory. Getting ready to try this. Could you please reply with the Brand and part number for the SSD external adapter? Thanks again. Being a Kentucky guy I understand you completely!
Thank you Luke, just updated my13" Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with new SSD and memory! Watched your video on my desktop while working on the laptop! Everything worked great with one exception....after getting the back on, relaized I forgot to reconnect the battery but after reconnecting, all worked perfect! Thanks again.
For anyone who may find it helpful I use APFS Encrypted and when cloning it to a new SSD APFS Encrypted you first need to mount the Mac HD, then when you chose "image" it will automatically unmount the volume and clone it. If you don't mount the volume first the computer can't copy it as it will determine its locked and encrypted. Took me a couple of trial and error tries to figure it out. I like to use encrypted format on all my drives. Anyways hope this helps someone as no video on the subject explains this.
Great video and very well spoken. Nice and slow so everything is understood 100 percent. Thanks for the video and the time you put into snaking it. Cheers.
Tried it yesterday and it worked 100 percent. I actually bought an empty 2.5 inch 7mm ssd enclosure that holds and m.2 data drive and put a Samsung in it. Now it has a sub 20 second boot up time. Now just waiting on 16gb of ram and good to go.
I have WD Blue SATA SSD drive. I was driving and flying next week and I noticed when I got back home my computer has been running slowly and I had to reset it and power it off/on multiple times to get it working.
On my 2012 model, the memory is replaceable. I'm not sure about the 2013 models. I upgraded to 16GB and there wasn't as great an improvement as the SSD was.
@@lukeFugate i think everything 2013 and after has soldered memory. and then 2016 and after has soldered hard drives. its getting very hard to upgrade them and the new gen looks lame to me...

luke Fugate thank you my friend. It took around 2h (maybe my old HD was too slow) but it ended with the green check mark and after installing the SSD, the boot time went down from 2:40 to 0:25. A ridiculous improvement on performance!! R/W speeds went from 50 to 490 Mb/s. Incredible. Thank you for the video. Very helpful!!
Fugate, you from Eastern Kentucky or Western Virginia? My Horton/McConnel relatives moved to Missouri with the Fugates. I'm going to save your video as I'm going to upgrade my Mac Book. Thanks
It would not be a clean OS. The best way to do that would be to download the installer for Mac OS and install it on the external hard drive then switch them.
Thanks for the sub! Mac os extended(journaled) although when you select restore it will automatically format your new drive while it clones your data. The main reason I format first is to make sure the disc is completely erased before starting.
One more question i have for you dear.. While cloning my drive, my installed applications will also be cloned? If not, how can i get those applications back?
This is so helpful and is 100% proven!! Followed all steps exactly and my Macbook Pro is now amazingly fast! Thanks mate!! One more subscriber to your channel 👍

Thanks Luke. Using your very clear instructions, I installed a 1TB Crucial SSD on my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro. Very pleased so far with the improved performance, especially with Office 365, which has been very sluggish.
Glad it worked for you!
his names not luke its Bill Fugate
Thank you, Brother Fugate! I have watched so many of this type of video, looking for one that was simple enough to understand from the explanation and the actual procedure, including keypress sequences. Thank you 2X. Peace.
Glad it worked for you!
I've watched 7 vids on this topic and this one is the very best! Excellent work, Luke!
Glad you liked it!
Your tutorial is soooooo awesome.. Really informative and easy to follow. You have saved my MacMini life (Late 2014) to a new breath. You are one of the best Mr. Luke.. BTW, I just subscribed your channel. May God bless you & keep you safe. Hats off from Malaysia!!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the sub too!
I've watched 5 or 6 different tutorials. This was very thorough and clear thanks!
Great to hear!
By far the best video on this topic, thanks man!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Amazing video!! You made it so easy to install. I’m upgrading my 2010 MacBook Pro so it’s older than yours and I’m definitely looking forward to taking into 2020!!
Thanks. Glad it helped you.
Super Helpful ! I was looking for a way to clone OSX Catalina HD nothing worked. After I watched your video and it worked perfectly. Thanks a lot !
Great to hear!
Thank you so much for your video, which helped me a lot bring back to life my sluggish MacBook Pro. One only note is that you should have told that before cloning the HDD you must first turn off the FileVault in System Preferences, otherwise the main HDD will appear greyed out and you would not be able to clone it into the new SSD. Apart from that, thumbs up!
Thank you. I was stuck on that part.
Thank you! The only thing I would add to this video is to make sure to mount your “Macintosh HD” and I had to log in to my other account to do so (in the disk utility) otherwise the MOST helpful I found and the one I carried through the process. 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
Great tutorial! Thank you, cloning the hard drive with that adaptor is a game changer. Thank you - got the memory coming and now ill order the ssd
Glad you liked it.
@@lukeFugate stupid question Luke sorry, but when i clone the hardrive to the external ssd do all the photos etc go on it as well? (I will do a back up before) thanks
@@burnsyblues Everything will be copied it will be identical to the original.
Dam not working for me, i start the clone and it just says failed and it changes my ssd drive name to ASRD data volume . I also dont have main and main data, i have macintosh and macintosh data
Had to use carbon copy cloner in the end! Such a stressful evening lol. Thanks for the vid it did help loads. Gone from a 1min 43 second boot to 33 seconds lol
GREAT TUTORIAL LUKE. Keep it up.. You have xplained the details on how to clone the hard drive. thank you.
Glad you liked it!
@@lukeFugate Subscribed and like your channel. Thank you very much.
Best explanation and run through Ive seen, thank so much. Cheers mate.
Glad you liked it!
i had a problem. didnt work on my white a1342 2009 macbook.
What OS are you running?
@@lukeFugate solved. i just used an ssd external case and installed sierra from a time machine back up. works fine.
Did a great job of explaining the procedure. Thanks buddy. Keep up the good content.
Thank you!
Thanks for the detailed step-by-step description. Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I watched a lot of videos which made me confused. But this one is awesome and really clear. Thank you so much !
You're very welcome!
This is the best video so far. I am waiting for my ssd and I will follow your instructions. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks mate!! Still helpful on 2022
Glad it helped!
Thank you! This video helped explain everything to me in a way in which i understood
Many thanks for your simple, to the point, no nonsense, effective tutorial! Got the job done without a problem.
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for saving my 2012 Mac Book Pro 🙏🏾
Glad to help. Thanks for watching!
That hard drive update made a lot of difference. It will be interesting to see how much better it will perform once you add extra RAM. 👍
Real world action they can taste it
Thanks man, the Disk Utility clone function is news to me! Ye learn something new every day!
Yes, I like to use what the system came with if possible.
Brilliant video, thank you. Have you updated the memory? Is there a video for this too?
Thank you! Yes I have upgraded the memory. Not as much improvement as I was expecting on that, but the HDD sure made a difference.
Great step by step tutorial, works like a charm, many thanks!
Glad you liked it.
Thanks for your help!
I’ve got the error 5342, but solved the issue like this:
I eventually found the problem - the new ssd had been configured with a MBR partition table, not GPT. To fix this go to the View menu and choose Show All Devices. Then select the external device at the top level and click erase. This should allow you to choose MBR or GPT partition schemes.
Excellent! Glad it worked out!
Thanks Luke!!! worked on my 2014 Mac Mini with Catalina. This is better than using superduper or carbon copy! No error message , no issues. Booted up fast , well its a 1T ssd so there.
Glad it helped. Yes, an ssd is an incredible upgrade. Brings an older computer back to life.
Great video! Have ordered SSD and memory. Getting ready to try this. Could you please reply with the Brand and part number for the SSD external adapter?
Thanks again. Being a Kentucky guy I understand you completely!
Found the answer in the replies. Thanks again!
Hope it works well for you.
Great to hear! Yeah I have done the same with the battery connection lol.
Thank you for this tutorial, worked a treat.
Thank you for this clear and concise tutorial which was just what I was looking for :)
You're very welcome!
Best video showing how to do this. Thank you so much!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Amazing very informative was able to do it step by step thank you so much!!!
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped you.
Well done! You explained the steps VERY WELL, THANKS
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. I have the same macbook and I am planning a DIY upgrade as well.
Hope it works out well for you. These are great computers.
This helped, I needed to mount the MacHD first!
Great video and very well spoken. Nice and slow so everything is understood 100 percent. Thanks for the video and the time you put into snaking it. Cheers.
You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the info. Maybe they aren't very vibration resistant. Good to know.
@@lukeFugate it could be a RAM issue. Bought some gonna watch your vid on how to switch it out.
Man you nailed it. All the other videos are just so stupid showing update using cloning softwares. I got my system upgraded... Cheers 🎉
Glad it worked for you.
great job. about to try this on my late 2013 model. i thought all of these had soldered memory tho so you couldn't upgrade those?
On my 2012 model, the memory is replaceable. I'm not sure about the 2013 models. I upgraded to 16GB and there wasn't as great an improvement as the SSD was.
@@lukeFugate i think everything 2013 and after has soldered memory. and then 2016 and after has soldered hard drives. its getting very hard to upgrade them and the new gen looks lame to me...
@@lukeFugate my biggest problem now is that i can easily swap a faster ssd (my stock ssd is not fast enough) but my pci ports are only 2.0 with 4 lanes so i can only do 2gb/s top speed. im already running 1.5gb/s so i dont know if its really going to save me. do you have any idea if you can upgrade pci's? ive been trying to find this info everywhere... thanks for your help and videos :)
thanks man . this video was the most helpful out of all the videos i watched
Happy to help!
this style WORKS.. just an add-on .. old OS u need to unmount the drive (example = unmount drive main) then u can proceed restore to work... but this is a good guide... maybe sum1 will have this issue that the drive is in use... just unmount then proceed
Thanks for the advice.
Greetings all the way from Denmark . First great video awesome job 🤩
I’ve been down the rabbit hole new feels like weeks.
On upgrading my second MacBook
Pro 2012 mit ( running Catalina 10:15.7 _SSD 1T )
If I want to clone my hard disk with operation system . Select the APFS as on the heart that I want to clone from
Should I select Mac OS journaled as you did.
Or should I stick with APFS As it the Hd ( SSD) I am cloning from ?
Just want to switch SSD drive out with new .
Sorry man for my bad English I’m a Dane 😃
When you go to clone the drive the disc utility will automatically clone the drive to whatever you have it now. It should be APFS.
Thank you, brilliant step by step guide! We have a useable laptop again!
Happy to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Nice improvement first video i found that doesn't involve me downloading extra software and worked!!
Glad it worked for you. I like trying to do stuff with native software whenever possible.
Thank you sooooo much! I got all the answers I needed from start to finish with this video. Much appreciation to you!!
You are so welcome! Glad it helped.
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL. Very updated with latest Catalina OS. Congrats!!
Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it!
luke Fugate how long does it take for the image to conclude? It’s been a long time and the progress bar is frozen at 95% for at least 30min now...
@@EvangelistadaVerdade Seems like mine was done in around an hour. Did it ever finish? You may have to try it a couple of times.
luke Fugate thank you my friend.
@@EvangelistadaVerdade Glad it worked out for you!
this is the best video for its content
Fugate, you from Eastern Kentucky or Western Virginia? My Horton/McConnel relatives moved to Missouri with the Fugates. I'm going to save your video as I'm going to upgrade my Mac Book. Thanks
I'm from Eastern KY. Hope the video helps you. Thanks for watching!
Hi, great video, when you clone the hdd to ssd, could we do only the OS and not the all files and data? Basically having a blank fresh Mac OS?
It would not be a clean OS. The best way to do that would be to download the installer for Mac OS and install it on the external hard drive then switch them.
Hi, thank you for a great video! What do you call the station you mount the SSD in?
I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro 15".
Here is a link to the one I used.

@@lukeFugate Many thanks! I am starting to believe my issue is the graphics card? Early 2008 Macbook Pro had a bad one.
So simple and to the point.. Impressed buddy... You are the best.. ❤️

I have one quick question.
Do i need to select any specific format type while formatting my new ssd drive?
Thanks for the sub! Mac os extended(journaled) although when you select restore it will automatically format your new drive while it clones your data. The main reason I format first is to make sure the disc is completely erased before starting.
@@lukeFugate I appreciate your quick response.. Thanks again.. ❤️
One more question i have for you dear..
While cloning my drive, my installed applications will also be cloned? If not, how can i get those applications back?
@@RajivVyasSurat it will make an exact copy of your drive. That includes all the apps and everything.
Worked first time. Nice video my friend

Thank you! I’ve been trying to figure this out for the past hour or 2 and finally found a solution
