  • Always a pleasure to report on the progress of the special wheelchair that is Segway style. The idea is to design a wheelchair that will go up and down the stairs or unusual angles. Work carried out at AUT by research student and engineers. It uses a pendulum as a counter-balance. Uses mostly LabView myRio real-time sliding mode controller. Some more basic tests here.

    That's a very impressive demo, and concept. If the pendulum weight was split and moved in to the same axis and radial as the wheels you'd eliminate any hanging obstacles that could catch, especially that someone's legs are going to be in that area too so moving this weight out would help. The ideal of using the battery at that counter weight is just excellent engineering.

    @T.J Moir - should do this in the flexible lab - lots of running away space :-)
