If Jamie Foxx won an Oscar for Ray in 2004 then Gary Busey certainly deserved an Oscar for the Buddy Holly Story 1979. If Rami Malek won an Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody 2019 by lip syncing then Gary Busey got screwed..... his acting and especially his singing in this film was astounding

I think Busey's performance was carefully choreographed and played. Buddy Holly could keep a crowd's attention due to the novelty of himself, the songs and the genre of rock 'n' roll itself (not to mention his flawless performance).
Gary Busey was performing, albeit through the lens of a director's camera, for a 1978 audience.
Maybe it would've been just as interesting if he mimicked Holly's stage performance, but I tend to believe that the moviegoers of 1978 might've found it a little lackluster.

Unfortunately after his motorcycle accident people saw his erratic behaviour as goofy. Sadly, Gary became fodder for stand-up comics and that pretty much made him unhirable for serious projects but Kathryn Bigelow took a chance in the early '90s with a small but crucial role in her Point Break action flick w/ Keanu and Swayze and was perfect.

I had the great good fortune to be instrument tech on The Buddy Holly Story in Australia (2009) promoted by great friends David And Julie White... A fabulous tour opened on 3rd of February the 59th anniversary of Buddy's death. By Peggy Sue Gerron ( sadly now deceased ) a great trooper of a Lady, and a wonderful friend. Scott Cameron played a stunningly lookalike BUDDY, and absolutely took the part for his own!! Great days. This version was fabulous too, a fitting tribute to the great man..... Rave on!!

It's sad that musicians like Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Stevie Ray Vaughn and others were taken away from us too early in their careers, but thanks to TH-cam... their memories and music are still with us ! She passed away in 2017 at 102 years old, so could imagine how long ago that was.

I've read all the comments and totally agree ... that as a nation... we "are" going backwards to a time when blacks and whites are divided again. What I am curious about is ... why this year 2020? Why is this year that's not even over yet ... any different that the years before. Is it just because it's an election year? I do not have an answer... but as for myself... I have never looked at the color of a person's skin as a negative. We are all human beings and we are all in the same situation with the Pandemic. Well, I'm going to continue my relationships with my black and Hispanic friends as I always have. I care about them as much as I do my family!

I seriously think Gary Busey gave the best rock bio performance ever with this movive. That's really him singing and playing. Not just him, the whole band. Those performances were recorded live. Nothing is mimed or lip synced. Busey sings exactly like Buddy Holly and his guitar playing is note for note accurate as well. Aside from that, his acting is great too. He really embodies Buddy Holly in his speech, demeanor, humor, Texas accent affect everything.
Gary Busey suffered a brain injury after his motorcycle accident and has never been the same sence, but back in the day, he was one of the best actors out there (he was also great in the first Lethal Weapon movie) and this is an all time performance .
