WOW I'm blown away to learn that in Europe there are liability laws for saddle fit. I'm a dressage rider and can't tell you how many custom saddle fitters I know of who have sold extremely expensive and ill fit saddles to well meaning owners.
Hi again MATT None of us are ever too old or too experienced to learn something even if it's a tidbit that could make a difference... Such a great guy and a great help to you Matt. Thx as always!
Watched this session again. Just heard a local "trainer" say that saddle fit wasn't important because you could always adjust it with a saddle pad. Didn't agree with that statement then, definitely not now. Valuable information.
Excellent video Matt! Thank you for bringing this information forward with Mr. Maschke's help. It always go's back to the old saying, "the more I learn, the more I didn't know!" Kudos to you Matt for putting yourself out there and admitting that you needed assistance in the saddle fitting dept. I can't wait to hear how your horses performances improve after the changes I bet you'll be making.
The rock in the tree CAN be an issue if your horse is super flat backed from front to back. If your horse is flat backed at a stand still without using his core and lifting his back, it will only create a pressure point in the middle of the back where most horses have the natural curvature. This will result in your horse being sore and hallowing his back down away from this pressure and not wanting to engage his core properly. Please always remember that you should have a fitter come and fit your particular horse as there are Soo many factors involved in fitting a saddle. Bar angle, gullet width, where the rigging is situated, where the seat pocket is for the rider, what type of work the horse does, and your own personal build and conformation. As well as if you or your horse have had any injuries or you or your horse have any asymmetries (as most people and horses do, that's normal!). I'm glad that the bigger trainers on TH-cam are starting to bring awareness to saddle fit. It's great to see! Best wishes and love your videos Matt!! 🙏❤️
I was just at a show and had a saddle maker tell me the superior saddle did not fit because it was coming up in the back. This info was priceless. Could you do another one on gullet size and fit? Thanks for the fun vids!❤
Well he made all of my saddles. Nothing wrong other than the wrong tree for Some of the horses. He did go through and check almost all of them. I’ve kind of categorized them all
This is awesome! I love that you are open to learning something new! When I started riding it wasn’t about the saddle fitting the horse. it was fitting the rider! Thank you
Definitely great video. Learned something new myself. I assumed there was only three sizes ( small, medium, n large)... thx for sharing this with us Matt. Still learning about these unique animals and all there is that comes with being in their company.
This is one of my favorite videos so far. Are you going to replace the saddles you currently use and start fitting them for each horse? If you have your saddle maker come out to consult on specific horses I’d watch every single one of those videos. That could be a whole series. Would be so interesting to see how many different trees it would take and how each horses is different. Great stuff!!
Great insight ! I agree 100% about the back cinch being to low , big mistake . I seen some wrecks with horses trying to get a fly or horse fly under their belly and get their toe caught .....say good by to your tack when they roll on the ground with the saddle on .
My horse has white spots on both sides of it's withers because of an I'll fitted saddle...now I'm wondering if the saddle was the reason for the constant stumble.
Thats good stuff iv talked about saddels and fit for a long time some people just dont want to here ya im pushing this video along its a good one Matt thanks
So cool! I need to get a new saddle for one of my horses. I didn't know the saddle didn't fit her, but then she wouldn't hold still for us to get on her and i figured out the saddle was to tight. I feel bad now, she was trying to tell me something and i ignored her.
Wow I want to much more information on this! My saddle pops up in the back when cinched and absolutely thought it was a bad fit instantly. Now I need to do more research into it. I’m planning on having a saddle fitter come at some point.
Thank you Matt! This was great information. I have been looking at my saddle fit all wrong. Learned a lot here. So thankful you do these videos. Good Luck at the RFM.
That great new information about saddle fitting it’s nice to see a part of the horse world being open to change for the benefit of the horse! I hope the other part will start being more open minded ( I will not say the what part) glad to see growth in any part of the horse world. Hope they keep it up 👍!
That was a timely video, I was just wondering about fitting a horse to certain saddle trees, since some just dont seem to fit them properly, and I didnt quite now how to go about it. GREAT INFO!
This is wonderful. And I did good . Surprised myself. Riding different breeds help. And having a strong willed saddle make who makes you listens helps too.
Great video, coming from the dressage world I'm used to having my saddles fitted for my horse. How do I find a western saddle fitter if I can't have Mr. Maschke do it? I live in the Northwest and would like my saddles checked.
had people say im a fool cause though my personal string is 2-3 i own.....i have lets see....a billy cook roping saddle, 2 wades, a high back (turkey tail...)buckaroo A fork ranch saddle, and herford, and old cutting saddle..,but prob 20-pads,,,,,,,,oh shims to.....the secret is like bits its all dif for each horse. we have to almost read him to know what works best.....so best advice..COLLECT
@@mattmillsreining1 may i ask a question....what type of feed do you feed. there is so much on the markrt these days uts easy to get lost. and i really beleive you can do more harm than good at times. Im a huge fan of omalene with a lil extra rice bran as well as good clean hay at all times. plus i firmly think a workout system is a must. like i started roping in 1989....cattle were bigger. so horse had to be stronger wo all this crap we got these days....so i keep old habits.
@@mattmillsreining1 oh by the way the wife hates my saddle collection! i keep 4 in my office along w 197 bits that hang nice and neat along my office wall!!!! she never goes in there!!!
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!! I use alfalfa cubes am and pm. Bermuda grass at noon. Either Nutrenas SafeChoice Original or Pro Elite grains 1- 4lbs per day. Rice bran on occasion to give a little extra. I also use Equine Omega Complete oil daily. Supplement wise I use SmartCombo by SmartPak. Everything matters right? The feed? The exercise, and the vet work ( worming, dental, etc )
Europeans be like: My horse put on 100g of weight, I'll have to ride bareback until the saddler has altered my saddle so my horse doesn't feel uncomfortable! Americans be like: Saddles have different trees?
I’m a little confused. How can you be a trainer if you have no knowledge of a horses physiology? Knowing how much the saddle fit affects the horses movement surely should be one of the first things you learn on your way to being a trainer? I don’t mean to be rude or disrespectful, I’m just assuming now that to be a trainer in the US is very different to being a trainer in the UK. We have to learn so much about the horses muscle structures & what can affect them before we can even think about becoming a trainer. If, when you are on a horse that is being difficult or is having difficulty with what you are asking it to do would you not first look at the fit of the saddlery worn by that horse? If not then what would you look to as the cause of the problem, discounting physical injury of course? I’m very interested to know how things are done & dealt with over there. An interesting video but something you should know before you ever buy a horse let alone train one. Baffled of the UK lol
Let's stop confusing disrespect with educate 😑 cause in the end saddles which don't fit the horses back make bad performances and then it comes back to the saddle fitter who didn't make the costumer aware of it in the first place 😢
At least Mr. Mills you are honest to say you did not know. That was some great info on saddles. Thanks
One can’t truly ever know Everything!

Did he go through all your saddles and spell out what is wrong with them?

buen vídeo, u muchas veces lesionamos la piel o la espalda de los caballos sin saber por que, probablemente es por que la silla no le queda bien

Should have had a side view of the fit. Not a front view. Terrible.
Terrible comment
The music is distracting.
🤣 thanks for the feedback!
