OKAY SO TL:DR OF OPINIONS NOW THAT I'VE HAD TIME TO PROCESS
I enjoyed this quest a lot, it's opened up a LOT of new avenues to go down. I do think the voice at the end could be Istaroth and she might be annoyed people are meddling with time and fate but it could be a lot of things. I still dislike the memory wipe troupe when it's a character we've developed a lot of lore around but it is what it is!

Scara wanted everyone to forget him, and i respect his decision, everyone in the fatui abuses him, and Raiden nor any of the people related to him care about him, i think it's very fitting for his character and he can finally move on and become better/have another chance at things. I can see why you don't like the memory wipe, but I still think it's the best thing they could've done for him/to redeem him

My biggest takeaway from this quest is the fact that this archon quest made *Venti* the most sus person in all of teyvat. He's a bard right? He himself tells stories in very cryptic and embellished ways.. Who knows what kind of records he's been keeping in his many ballads.
*Also* remember how in Lisa's story quest we were chasing an abyss mage that stole a book from the restricted version of the library, only to find out it was merely a children's storybook? Who knows what kind of big thing is _hidden_ in that thing

When Wanderer asked Nahida "What do you think the differences are between humans and puppets?"
And Nahida replied "What are the differences between you, your previous incarnation and your future incarnations?" And then said that all those who experience pain and joy are human.
She meant that, as the Wanderer, he did not have to go through any of the painful experiences that the Balladeer had, he didnt have any meaningful emotions or experiences. And it had left a void inside of him.
As the Balladeer, although he had given up on being human and was adamantly trying to forsake his emotion, all his pain from his past had ironically made him human all along.
Balladeer kept trying to erase his emotions and become a blank puppet sheet. But once he had accomplished just that and became the Wanderer, the Wanderer only wanted to have his emotions back.
Its not just about facing his sins, but he also wanted to fill the void in his chest with his humanity.

I think the point of this quest isn't redemption (and he probably never will be redeemed) but Scaramouche owning up to his sins and serving Nahida as a form of penance. Honestly I can't understand people who think that Wanderer isn't being held accountable but are fine with the shogun (who has caused so much more pain and strife than Scara) getting off scot free.

  • @effortlessfury
    @effortlessfury ปีที่แล้ว +473

So, I watched your VOD over on Twitch and I wanted to comment on a few things. So, it seemed like you were struggling to understand that your (and our) comprehension of Irminsul tampering differed from the Traveler's. They were not entirely certain they understood how it worked, hence their panic and quick departure to Inazuma to verify what had happened. They suspected everything would be alright but they still weren't certain, as removing Rukkhadevata was removing someone the world already thought dead and thus a butterfly effect alteration would be less likely if the past was ACTUALLY being altered. Scaramouche was attempting to actually change events, and though we knew that wasn't possible, the Traveler was not certain.
Also, Scaramouche DEFINITELY did not know, because the Traveler never directly answered his question about whether it was possible to change the past. He took the Traveler's hesitation as a "yes," and attempted to actually change the past. He wanted to actually save their lives, not simply free himself from blame or responsibility. His choices were all made under the pretext of lies, and his entirely life was immediately recontextualized in that moment. If there was a way to save them, he wanted to try, even if it meant he no longer existed. The unfortunate truth that he did not realize was that there was no saving them.
While everyone forgetting him seems like a cop-out, it's really not when you consider what redemption actually is. Redemption is about atonement, about trying to make up for past wrongs. The truth is that there was no one that he'd wronged to hold him accountable even before he "changed history." Ayato and Kazuha only recently discovered the truth of the fall of the Raiden Gokuden, and Kazuha didn't even know it was The Balladeer, only someone by the name of Kunikuzushi. Anyone else he may have wronged we have no idea exists, and he probably doesn't know who they are either; for this reason, those others that you say will never have closure were never going to get closure anyway. Even though in this new reality, no one knows it was Kunikuzushi or The Balladeer, the end result is that the Wanderer asked us to inform them of the whole truth; they'll actually know MORE about the truth than they did in the previous view of history.
I was feeling disappointed in the turn of events as I played through the quest as it did seem as though he was going to be absolved of his actions (which is to be free of blame or responsibility), but this ended up with him having the chance to CHOOSE to own his sins. He could've walked away absolved, and he instead chose not to. And so, we come back to what it means to "be redeemed." I don't think there's ever a way to declare someone "redeemed." At best, someone you have directly wronged can assess your actions and forgive you personally, but for us third-party observers who have no stake, it takes observing their future actions to determine if they're working their way toward righting their wrongs. Additionally, in reality, most folks are never able to seek atonement directly with people they've wronged, they can only try to do right by others they meet in life going forward. Truth be told, for someone like Scaramouche, he may be working to atone for the rest of his existence and there may be no definitive redemption. BUT, if he spends his life working toward that ideal, I think that's the best we can ask from anyone, especially considering that, in his case, his choices were made under false pretenses. Working as Nahida's right hand and being able to do so without the Fatui on his heels is a major boon to her and to us, and if he does follow through on that, is probably LITERALLY the best possible outcome we ever could have wished for.

Yeah a lot of amazing points in here, although one of the main things I wanted to convey which I failed is the point of redemption, I simply don't think every character needs redemption to be playable and was just sad that that's the chosen route it seems, still a TON more to come so we'll see, I just expected more of a "working together because the enemy of my enemy is my friend" kinda deal instead of fully trying to have a redemption arc but it's all personal preference then!

    • @effortlessfury
      @effortlessfury ปีที่แล้ว +135

@@BranOnline And that's fair. Granted, I don't think this'll be a "Zuko-style Redemption Arc." Like I said, I don't think there is "true redemption" for him. The Traveler was never going to be able to cooperate with The Balladeer as he was, he would need to make a decision to cooperate with us in some fashion, which would lead to actions that, in some form, create partial atonement/redemption; it was inevitable by nature of cooperating with us. He's still the same old little shit, and he may still be willing to get his hands dirty in ways we wouldn't. He's just assisting someone who has better interests at heart, and I think that's what we would've wanted, no?

And In a way it really fits Scara's personality, of course HE would have a quest where you want things to end with appropriate karma but he couldn't care less about that. Every quest with him (barring his godhood line in the sumeru quest) has ended your interaction with him on his terms. Only once was he really defeated. I actually liked this story because it's kinda poetic in a way. Scara still remembers what he did, it's not undone but by rewriting the past he actually left it "in the past", dropping some weight from his shoulders and making himself ready to atone and move forward. It's a good allegory for "what's done is done". If he left with something like "i'm free so long suckers" i would be pissed, but hey he's willing to repay nahida and traveler for their help, so yeah. I’ll try to explain in my view why it’s not that bad. Scara deleted his existence but nobody knows who did all those bad stuffs in the first place. So it’s hardly any different for most people in the world. for those who are directly affected by Scara’s action, he told us to let them know that he was the one who’s responsible for it. So he’s not really running from his actions and brush it under the rug or anything. And narrative wise, deleting himself is the only way the fatui won’t be back for him and he can restart and turn on our side.

  • @luzitea1178
    @luzitea1178 ปีที่แล้ว +73

I don't think coping out it is the result. Scara told Traveller to tell 'the good ones' what happened in the past (that he murdered the blacksmiths, etc.). It's not like Kazuha or Ayata etc. have met Scara so they haven't lost memories of him, just the information that it was him. And Traveller will tell them the truth again so nothing would change on this end. However, what has changed is the information balance for the bad guys. Nahida is the giga chad. She now has the former 6th harbinger as information source and secret agent of hers while the fatui don't remember him. Let's not ignore that with a copy of the baladeer memories at hand, I'm sure Nahida could put the deleted information back into Irminsul but she doesn't want to because he'll be more useful to her if the fatui don't know he existed. Likely, he'll be a relevant asset in a later story against the fatui.

I know the origin of the eye-patch is a reference to their king, Irmin. That also aligns with the mythos Jörmunr/Odin that comes with that name, and of course also the Irminsul.
However, what I don't know is if the custom originated when the king was still alive and only people of higher rank were allowed to wear the eye-patch (Pierro was the royal advisor, Dainsleif was captain of the royal guard, and Kaeya is a member of the Alberich Clan) making the joke Kaeya did in the beginning of the game about the eye-patch being something you inherit from your parents correct, *OR* the custom came after the fall of Khaenri'ah to show the respect and support to their king.
But, the reason is related to Irmin for sure.

Though his crimes were erased from the world, (which seems to be what Bran is most upset about with this story decision citing the lack of closure for the victims), the Wanderer made it very clear that he had no intentions of hiding his involvement with the downfall of the Raiden Gokuden. I think eventually he'll take responsibility for his actions by admitting to them but for right now it seems he will be spending and extended amount of time in Sumeru.

My take on it is that the events don't change, it's just that all the data on them gets altered. So Scaramouche killed people and that can't be undone. Because of him, those people still HAD to die because fate can't be changed. Someone had to take his place in history as the murderer, but I think if Scaramouche really never existed at all in the first place, those people wouldn't have been murdered. So in the end, he is still the one responsible for all those crimes. Because HE did all that, it still HAS to have happened. Does that make sense? So he still has to atone in my eyes, and I hope that happens. Also, to make it more confusing, I think the conversation with the mysterious voice at the end also tells us something important. I think that in this post Scaramouche deletion version of Teyvat, the events still happened like we remembered them. So Rukkhadevata existed really and Scaramouche did those things too, the only thing that Irminsul is capable of changing is the records of history and all the people's memory. So it's not as much time travel as it is pure altering of data, like Irminsul just rewrote Kaedehara Yoshinori's letter instead of going back in time and actually making it happen differently. I think that's why at the end the Traveler says to trust their own memory, the Descenders are the only ones to truly know the REAL history of Teyvat, whereas the people of Teyvat get new FAKE memories. Just a game theory thanks for reading.

Like the characters don't acknowledge this at all and act like what he did was good or at best neutral, but he only made it worse. Literally framed other ppl for his crimes. He hasn't been redeemed, on the contrary. Also this whole thing just feels like a really convenient and kinda wonky plot device, so it all depends on what they do after this to make it work... 1:26:16 it's bc scaramouche was very connected to the kaedehara/kamisato ancestors. It would've been possible that Niwa would've lived, so maybe bc he lived maybe due to butterfly effect neither the kamisato siblings nor kazuha would've been born at all. Or, bc their experiences and hardships have shaped them to what they've become today, they probably would've become completely different people bc of the deletion (ex. if the kaedehara clan wasn't in decline kazuha wouldnt have gone soul searching, or if the kamisato father wasn't suffering from illness caused by extreme stress for the clan ayato wouldn't have become the head at this stage in his life). Scaramouche also caused the destruction of nearly all the raiden gokaden, which, as i mentioned, are direct things that shaped kazuha and the kamisato siblings to the people they are now. Anything could've happened so yeah, that's why traveler was scared
1:27:11 Yes but that's what scaramouche was trying to do, by deleting himself from the past he was hoping it would basically revive people but he didn't know that couldn't be done. Lisa and Paimon say it's just an average story book so we never figure out why the abyss mage wanted to steal it in the first place, so I wonder if it's something similar and it's an allegory for something important that was deleted

I quite enjoyed this quest. The memory altering plot has potential to be overused very quickly; however, I was not too upset by its use in this instance.
For one, I think Scaramouche was pretty clear in his voice lines that his intention in changing Irminsul was to hopefully revive all the people who he had made suffer. And I feel like he was willing to erase himself from existence if necessary for that to occur. His question to the traveler was "could you change the past" not simply "erase memories."
I think him telling us to tell the Raiden Gokaden of his actions is plenty of evidence that he's willing to still face consequences for his actions. Beyond the Raiden Gokaden murders, his worst other action was the very brief time he oversaw the delusion factory and indirectly caused deaths to Watatsumi soldiers. We have no evidence he committed other murders because he was either being experimented on by Dottore or he was on expeditions to the Abyss for the remaining time (unless you count killing Abyss creatures as murder). If he's willing to accept consequences from the Raiden Gokaden then surely he should also be willing to accept consequences for the delusion factory as well. Given that Watatsumi forgave the Raiden so easily, them forgiving Scaramouche as well seems pretty likely, even if neither of them necessarily deserve it. Even Ei was indirectly responsible for the deaths the Raiden Shogun puppet she created caused.
I know a lot of people wanted a Scara and Ei reconciliation, but in my opinion that would be pretty unrealistic and difficult to write into the story. Scara basically never knew Ei. And even if Ei says she had good intentions to "set Scara free" she clearly never intended to communicate with him because she entered the Plane of Euthymia shortly after he awoke. Also, she never set up a support system for him except for giving him a symbol of the shogun so hopefully people wouldn't harm him. I think it would be difficult to return to a parent who did that.
I'm hoping this is the last we'll see of memory altering for a long time. But I think seeing this happen sets up potential for a interesting plot from this point on: solving the mystery of what has already been removed from history. For example, uncovering the mystery that exists in the book "The Pale Princess and the Six Pygmies." Since we now know that fairytales can hide important history, we now know for certain why the Abyss Order was so interested in this book.

Can we talk about fairy tales being reliable sources of information? LOOKING AT YOU PALE PRINCESS AND THE SIX PYGMIES 🤫
Though, you weren't entirely wrong about the reset, it's where the idea comes from that makes it a BIT different in Scara's case.
While, I am quite indifferent to how they went about the deletion thing, they should have paced and executed it better. Especially in the memory domain and Niwa's death. It felt...empty.
However, I do understand why Scara would want to erase himself because he felt guilty that his existence caused Niwa's death. I actually like the psychology behind this. He was abandoned and essentially adopted the mindset that he was worthless and used that as leverage to "make things right." He sees things in a transactional sense; if he is gone, then so will the misfortunes of the Tatarasuna incident. Even so, we saw how that went down.
In regards to the wanderer's first appearance...I didn't like it -it felt clunky and a bit too convenient. Now, let's look at his psychological evolution. He essentially wanted his memories back not only to make things right but maybe because he was feeling empty and wanted a semblance of human emotion to make him human. Because as Nahida said: "Anyone who has gone through human emotions is human." What I also liked is that he reclaimed those memories even if Nahida did make an analogy that he is essentially evil if he is alright with whatever he did in the past. It makes it so his character isn't flat and that's just something I appreciate.
Anyways, I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on this.

Why is everyone acting like the Balladeer only wanted to wipe memories? What he wanted is to wipe his own existence in hope that those he did kill is alive since he will not be meeting his victim in the new timeline.
He is not trying to escape his sin. He is purposely trying to undo it. But fate makes them die anyway which is not something scara has no control over.

my biggest takeaway from this archon quest is that it pretty much solidifies the concept from the previous one: That even if you try to remove every trace of you from irminsul, you gotta make sure that none of the people related to Teyvat has some way to recover it, otherwise everything you did would be useless. Hence why the traveler is trying his best in not sharing anything regarding Rukkhadevata, as anything related to the Greater Lord would just render her deed of purging herself, and the forbidden wisdom corrupting irminsul alongside it, pointless.

I just realized… wasn't it that the Irminsul tree we entered to erase Rukkhadevata just a snapshot of the tree from the time of the Cataclysm? I might be wrong but I remember Nahida saying that it was Rukkhadevata's consciousness just before she died, not the actual tree. This would be similar to Makoto's realm of consciousness just before she died that Ei preserved. If this was the case, it would make sense that we would see the cubes from the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles since it was there during the Cataclysm. It would also make sense in this case that the cubes would be gone in the vicinity of the actual Irminsul tree during the Inversion of Genesis quest when it has already been cleansed of corruption and the Cataclysm has long ended.

The thing is, The Balladeer tried to erase 2 of his existence, he thought that he would undo the event that happened specifically because of that 2 entities. Like, he thought that the whole event starting from the Tatarasuna would change because Dottore wouldn't do those so-called experiments because there's no "Balladeer" or "Kabukimono" that would pique his interest to experiment on, hence why Balladeer thought that erasing his existence would save those innocent souls.
The Traveler also thought that by erasing Balladeer and Kabukimono, some history might not happen. That's why he checked everyone that was tied to the Tatarasuna event like Raiden Gokaden and The Yashiro commission.
But like what we know, erasing your existence doesn't change what happened, it doesn't change fate, it only changes who did it.
Now, the whole Tatarasuna event technically happens not because of Balladeer but someone else. Same as the broken vase, Paimon didn't do it, previously Paimon broke it because she was thinking about Balladeer, but there's no Balladeer, so she wouldn't have panicked and broken it, something else did it.
As the mysterious voice said, doesn't matter whether it is broken by a cat or a bird, the result is still a broken vase.

When I started this quest, I thought Irminsul was capable of changing reality itself when someone is removed from its memory because even the Sumeru book series Folio of Foliage changed. I thought "If Irminsul can change physical objects in Teyvat to reflect the removal of someone from its memory, surely that means it changes reality, right? Surely that means it changes the past to reflect a different version of events, and it replaced Rukkhadevata with Nahida because she fit perfectly and is technically part of Rukkhadevata? Meanwhile, Scaramouche had no one who could replace him in the narrative, so what if that would change the past?"
When the story went to the next day after he erased himself, I was expecting to see the vase back to normal, but it was still broken. It made me realize that all Irminsul can change really is just knowledge - both mental and physical manifestations of it - nothing else.
That's why the past didn't change like Scaramouche thought it would; Irminsul _couldn't_ change the past. All it could do was fill in the gaps to explain why things happened. But Scaramouche removing himself left much bigger instabilities than removing Rukkhadevata did, depending on how Irminsul explained things like -Dottore's presence at Tatarasuna- *(Edit:* Nevermind, misunderstood why Dottore went there), why Signora still got killed in Inazuma but managed to get the Gnosis to the Fatui, and the now empty 6th seat of the Fatui Harbingers.
-In the original history, Dottore went to Tatarasuna specifically because he was after Scaramouche. What was his reason in the new version?- And what do the Fatui know about the empty 6th Harbinger seat? Do they have any explanation for why it has been empty for so long, who used to have that position, and what happened to them? Even if Irminsul made up a character to play that role, that fictional person couldn't have actually done anything of consequence, which would just lead to questions as to why they even got the role in the first place. There are too many spaces where someone can pull at a stray thread and unravel the façade, in my opinion.
I wish this was a main Archon Quest so we would have a greater chance of there being eventual consequences for Scaramouche's actions here, but it seems like the Interlude chapters may just be side stories.

This is under the assumption that changes in the Irminsul only removes the memories when in fact, any changes in it results in physical changes in Teyvat to accommodate the said changes. When Rukkhadevate was removed from the Irminsul, she was not only forgotten, she was totally erased from everything in Teyvat, which included her name in the 3 "Folio in Foilage" books. If only memories were erased, any entry in tangible copies would have been unchanged.

The only problem with your logic, is that Scaramouche himself agrees with you. He will gladly pay for his sins, and ask Traveler to tell anyone hurt by him what he did and welcomes anyone who comes to him to stab him, as it should be.
So no he wasn't running from his punishment, he's just waiting for anyone, who's capable to get to him to get that revenge, get it for themselves.
However, he's just not the type of person to actively go to a victim to atone/kneel and cry for forgiveness. Nor did he "turn a new leaf", he's still the same personality.
And the traveler is still distrustful towards Scaramouche, but he's willing to respect Nahida's choice to recruit Scaramouche. But just like Scaramouche's voicelines say, traveler and him, even when on the same team, are not friends who share pleasantries, and not to say the traveler's grudges are DEFINITELY not resolved yet.
Wiping his record on teyvat did not change his "evilness", nor did it completely change our (travler)'s opinion of him, and our memories stay intact (the only memory that matters). so it personally didn't feel like a cop-out for me.

My opinion? sure disagree with it, but it's logical to come to the conclusions I have, when character voicelines just disappear, previous lore is changed just like that in item descriptions etc. The traveller isn't the only person who matters to me in terms of who's opinion matters etc, it's sad for me that Raiden and everyone elses memory of Scaramouche have disappeared, but it's my opinion!

When Ruka deleted herself, she also changed the outcome for the world. Thanks to her being gone, the corruption was gone as well and the people with the illness got cured. The same way when Wanderer attempted to wipe himself from existence, he failed because of what ''the voice'' at the end explains how fate works in Teyvat. He would still exist in some shape or form so his life just went by but differently. He did change the fact that he was not the one to kill the swordsmiths, so in his stead Dottore was the one to do it as it was said in the texts the 2 Sumeru scholars showed. This also means Dottore never got to experiment on Wanderer. So he did change his previous sins, but he failed to save his friends either way. It is not simply making people forget your name. It did have an impact on the timeline.
p.s. And yes the Traveler was worried and with reasons, because if we assume he truly was able to delete himself completely ( we now learned its not possible), many more things could have changed drastically. For example it would mean Ei never created a prototype body, which could mean her plan failed or she gave up on it, and Ei ended up never making the Raiden Shogun. That on itself would have changed SO much. If Wanderer didn't exist it could have also changed the fate for Kamisato, Ayaka and Kazuha since both their families were involved in the incident. If for some alteration one of their descendants were to die earlier, Kazuha and Kamisato/Ayaka wouldn't exist.
Also when he says to carry his sins it means that even though he didn't do anything wrong in the known current timeline, he recognizes previously he did do bad things. SO his responsibility now is to learn from the info gathered and AVOID something like that happening. He has had 3 existences in 2 timelines. In first line, the scara that was used and mislead that did evil things. In the second line, the wanderer that was abandoned and simply kept a peaceful existence. And in that same line, the Wanderer that did nothing wrong, but had all the additional knowledge of how things could go wrong because of him being mislead. In short, his current self is one that gained knowledge he shouldn't have but because of that information he now has to carry the weight of the responsibility it involves. He is more complete and complex now.

My thoughts on this quest is Scara deleted himself in hopes to not erase his sins but possibly change the history. He may wanted others to live but thats not gonna happen at least they go down in history as the ones who tried to save tatarasuna.
Its also the best course of action since when Scara learned the truth after Dottore's manipulation he might have felt guilty for all those years he hated everyone and thought he was betrayed which he never was. Plus it will completely reset Scaramouche the harbinger from the rest of the fatui so now I'm excited what future brings since none of them will probably remember him so he acts as a spy or informant.
Its also a good thing some were upset about Scara and Ei not reconciling but they are merely seeing their own views. I don't even know why people are obsessed with them meeting. Scara now wanderer wanted a new chapter and he doesn't need Ei for that thats the same for Ei. She already freed him instead of caging or destroying thats it she did her part. We need to understand that Wanderer no longer needs Ei, he is now moving forward I don't need them to reconcile since wanderer accepted his past sins and decided to move forward. Going back and meeting Ei will hurt him and he has suffered enough already. I don't care is he needs motherly love since Wanderer himself only sees himself as a tool but in Sumeru we witness how he fully accepted his mistakes and even decided to help Nahida and traveler.

The Wanderer is not a Scaramouche without memory, it is another version of himself, in other words the Wanderer with whom we met, did not participate in the Tatarasuna incident, so he never received the name of Kabukimono, nor did he join the Fatui, so he also did not receive the name of the Balladeer and therefore was never the sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, this version of Scaramouche, having not participated in the previous events after being released/abandoned, was just a nameless puppet.

late comment but in one of the lines in the wanderer's voice clips he tells you exactly what he wished for which was to not be born at all. and in doing so he may have been able to change history. so instead of doing that it made it so that scaramouche and all that happened in his life never existed in the first place. when nahida says this isnt a memory wipe nor the past she is telling the truth. this is rewritten history to the point where nobody knows of scaramouche or kabukimono or any of that because in that history he did not even exist in those stories that are not changed. I appreciate the way this is explained better than what most would do which is just as you said "memory wipe" but this is more complicated than that
