When the Battle of Gettysburg raged, it was the largest Battle of fire power in the history of the World. More munitions were expended in just those 3 days than in all of the years of the Napoleonic Wars combined. It held the honor of the largest battle in the World until WW I arrived. Today, it is reduced to the largest battle fought in the Western Hemisphere. If some of our governments don't start playing nicely, that record is subject to change.
With passage of 75 years, the military had become mechanized. Seeing the armored vehicles parading before Civil War vets was a sobering sight. A year later was the start of WW2.
I wonder how many generations thought wars/pandemics/strife could not occur for them ? Did Civil War children think they’d be in WW1, WW1 children in WW2 , Vietnam, war on terror , etc ? I think many people get in comfort zones , not recognizing the fluidity of history.
5:12 I’d like to think those gentlemen (who probably went on to help save the world in WW2) conversed with the gentlemen who helped save this country in the American Civil war.
I didn't know there were so many veterans of the civil war alive at that point. Assuming they were, let's say, 18 years old in 1865, they would have been 91 in 1938. Some of them were probably older. Interesting.
@Roger Wilco BS you are a deranged & brainwashed Libtard full of hate. I am a former marine from the 1st Marine Division who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. First generation American of Mexican descent with a college degree who lives in the present and does not fall for the radical left's propaganda of division and resentment among the races, sexes and classes. Your head needs to be de-programmed from all of the Left-wing propaganda given in many college campuses. You freaking Soyboys are easily mislead and want you to live in the past and live with anger and resentment.
@Roger Wilco that's all you got?! Throw a temper tantrum? Boy you brainwashed stupid Lefties do not know how to debate. Go run to mommy you freaking left wing racist.
Cars didn't even exist during that time, and there they were 75 years later witnessing the progress of human technology, from advanced military hardware like tanks, supersonic jets to the telephone, just to name a few.
dang these guys ARE OLDDDD. most of them were very old some lived to be 100+. the only person verified to be old was Albert Henry Woolson. he was verified at 106. 150 - 1956 its cool to see that lots of people from the 1800s lived to be seen in colored footage :)
cant help but notice no confederate flags, honoring veterans from both sides with american flags. the confederate flag did not come back until the 1950's as a reaction to the civil rights movement
It seems unlikely that 1800 of them that attended were actually soldiers in the Civil War though. Even in 1938, they would have to have been in their 90's and that's if they were very young as a soldier. My guess is a very small handful of those attending were actually Civil War soldiers. Love to watch videos like this.
Wrong. From Wikipedia: "The gathering included approximately 25 veterans of the battle [of Gettysburg], with a further 1,359 Federal and 486 Confederate attendees out of the 8,000 living veterans of the war. The veterans averaged 94 years of age."
@@VariedVids My great grandfather was there at age 98. They were tough old coots, many of them with chronic pain and war wound scars. Alot of them re-enlisted like Grandpa did too. Men aren't that tough anymore.
Shame on the American political classes bringing about a war where brother was fighting brother , same with the war of independence shame again on the part of the political classes and the self centered lust for power and financial gain .
Amazing to be able to see colour footage of veterans of a war that ended over 150 years ago!
I agree
That audience was probably full of Civil War veterans, their widows, brothers, sons, daughters etc.

...It was great to see color footage of this: that brings it even closer to home!

Thomas Favre a lot of the soldiers were kids at that time. In there early teens.
Early teens, really?
Do some research.
Hey young man we all history in our country and family look into.
I have done my research. Yes, EARLY teens. That was life then. Deal w/it!
Ahh, the good ol' days where patriotism was rampant

Wish it could have has audio. I would like to have met a Civil war vet.
1:25 The veterans gave speeches for broadcasters, like NBC. Are they recorded somewhere? If so, maybe pair them with the film.
What is that object at 6:16? Looks like some sort of digital display. Time Travel confirmed?
WOW!
Those were the days when America was America now forget about it
Outstanding
Amazing
Someone needs to lip read this for us

I'd have just let the South go. No war!
2:14 the guy on the left said; I'd rather cut off my right leg than go back into battle, right Frank? Guy on the right says; Right Stumpy!
You read lips?

Interesting film. Easy to forget the existence of slavery as the key issue in the war.
Lol. Goon
I've heard that the Civil War ended badly for, ''Dixie.'' But what would I know?
Yah it did. The north flooded our nation with their carpet baggers and then overturned our laws. They do likewise today
Ended rather badly for the northern invaders also.......375000dead.
Still upset over the loss of the lawlessness racist south. Get over it
Roger Wilco um yeah the north owned people to
Roger Wilco um every border state that stayed Union were slave states learn ur history
When I view innocent films, I have to wonder of the motives to create these videos.

And now we're approaching the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor...and the 20th anniversary of 9/11 has already come and gone...
