First mate John Steadiman is beginning to lose hope. The surviving passengers and crew of the wreck of the Golden Mary have just days left, he calculates. But as their deliverance starts to seem an impossibility, a crewman spots a sail on the distant horizon. Could this be their salvation?
"The Wreck of the Golden Mary (Being the Captain’s Account of the Loss of the Ship, and the Mate’s Account of the Great Deliverance of Her People in an Open Boat at Sea)" is a collection of six connected short stories and one poem written by six different authors. Together, these formed the main part of the Christmas 1856 issue of the magazine 'Household Words', which was edited by Dickens at this time.
Dickens began a tradition of Christmas publications with "A Christmas Carol" in 1843 and his Christmas stories soon became a national institution.
