Notes from a paint chemist:
Airbrush thinner is a good idea as a substitute for acrylic retarder. Airbrush flow improver is even better! It’s basically the same stuff, and I don’t bother to buy acrylic retarder myself, I just use the flow improver.
Just be careful about using too much as it can easily develop bubbles in recesses of the model
