  • You may have noticed that the tone of James Hetfield's voice is quite different on the Black Album compared to Master of Puppets. Here is why.

      AJFA has my favorite Hetfield vocal performance by far.
      He was starting to find it slowly on MOP, but you can tell his voice also still has some of the youthful overtones from RTL and KTA.
      He sheds that completely on AJFA and pretty much perfects that style on the Black Album, although AJFA has more raw aggression in his vocal delivery which is the primary reason why it's my favorite vocal performance from him.

    Here's another way to explain it:
    Because his original singing inspirations were people like Sean Harris, Steven Tyler etc, as well as being younger, Hetfield's original singing voice was coming from a much brighter place, and the grit was coming from a 'top' down perspective, as in he was bringing it down from that higher register into his singing voice. Relatively easy to do, as you say.
    Starting with Justice, but especially on the Black Album, James started creating that grit from a much deeper place, lower throat and a bit of chest resonance, and in a way it was the opposite of before in that this was a "bottom up" approach: taking that grit and intensity from a lower register and bringing it up into his normal range. Also makes perfect sense why he was only able to keep it up for about a year before blowing his voice out, as that puts wayyyy more strain on your vocal cords than the earlier approach.
    -From somebody who gave himself nodes trying to replicate his peak style.

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons
      @terrifyingmusiclessons  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That’s exactly what I was thinking!! He started out singing like a higher range singer with the mixed voice grit and transitioned into more chest voice based grit!! Rock on 🤘🏻

    • @Neo-Midgar
      @Neo-Midgar ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@terrifyingmusiclessons Another big part of how his approach changed that I think goes unnoticed at times is that on the Black Album he'd already begun adding some of the rounder pronunciation and country twang that would become so prominent on the Load records. Back in the early days, up through Master, he sang using his regular speech pronunciation.
      That change is really the secret sauce ingredient to that 91 voice, and why it's so stylistically distinct from what came before. If that grit was just coming from a deeper place but everything else was the same, it wouldn't sound as drastically different as it does.

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons

    The peak aggression and tone in James's voice (as well as their live performances) came in ...And Justice For All, and the Black Album. James's balance of tone, rasp, and sheer delivery was top-notch. But of course that came at a price, blowing his voice out routinely, which is physically damaging to your vocal chords... so his style had to change regardless after that. But 1988-1992 Hetfield voice will always be the best IMO.

  • @jaded9234
    @jaded9234 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    One thing that younger James did that I wish he would still do is maintain a flat tone throughout a full phrase. He actually has a really good delivery when he stays on track, but it seems like, over the years, he deviated by default. I think the best way I've heard it described is that young James "Vocalized" where Present-day James "sings". Somewhere along the way, he seems to have decided to "sing" everything even when the song sounds best with his simpler "vocalized" delivery. Let this not detract from the fact that James is undeniably epic.

    He also took singing lessons after he blew his voice out so he was able to sing in really low registers and softer like in The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters. Four years of touring and singing like that and drinking every night took it's toll on his voice. If you watch some videos from late '93 and early '94 you can see he is tired and still trying to sing like he did in '91 but can't so he is singing closer to his current voice.

    Two - Bob Rock pushed him to be a “proper” vocalist. James ended up blowing out his voice on “So what” and taking vocal lessons afterwards.

    This is often an unpopular opinion but I prefer James’ higher voice. I can’t get enough of late ‘86 live shows with Newkid, that guitar tone and that voice. Also Lars was a beast at that time.

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons

      Yes! I think it’s because he was really distorting some lower notes one the phrases before the chorus. Like the phrase “Can't they see it's why my brain says rage”. On Justice, he started doing that more. Until then, he was mostly distorting notes around G4 (a bit higher).

    Um, or perhaps it was that from Kill'em All through Master, James DOUBLED all his vocals? Very well documented technique. His vocals are doubled at minimum which is why there is more growl and subtle multiple frequencies in his delivery. That distinct approach CHANGED at the Black Album at Bob Rocks suggestion. It was the first time James actually "sang" vs recording limited variance to sing the exact same thing on top of a previous recording of his own yelling in tune... 🤦

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons
      @terrifyingmusiclessons  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that’s interesting! You’re saying there’s no doubling on the black album? That may very well be true. I do remember Ken Tamplin mentioning that there were like 10 different vocal tracks on the main vocal though for the black album. Ken claims he knows the engineer who worked on that album (not the producer). But he may be mistaken.

    Sadly drinking heavy and over touring due to management and trying to please the general public basically destroyed his voice.
    The AJFA tour it wasnt long and over stretched.
    But the black album brought the main stream issue where the management wanted money signs. And the black album tour went on way to long destroying James voice.
    And remember Metallica never grieved over Cliff, so heavy drinking and over touring pushed James to self destruction almost.

    Can you do a video explaining what was happening with his vocal delivery LIVE between 94 to 2012. At some point in 93 his old style vocals were no longer possible - so he started to really yodel. He brought the pitch down half a step as of 95 live, and as well as in the studio. In 2008 he resumed in E in studio only. but continued Eb live - obviously to save his voice. He could still do the old style here and there, but not for an entire show. So we still got plenty of yodelling. It wasn't until 2012 that he began to sing somewhat more aggressively yet yodelly consistently, striking the right balance for what was realistic for the longer shows. Up until that year it was really hit and miss. Vocal peaks live could be found however in '98-99 as well as 2007-8. I'd really like for someone such as yourself to dive deep into their live sets over the years to spell out what we're hearing, and speculate as to why, and what changed, etc.

      For some people, it can take months and even years to fully heal vocal damage. James badly stressed his voice out in the early 90's and then sang more conservatively for a long time. More recently he occasionally sings with more grit/aggression, but he's never going to go all out like he did in the 80's and early 90's. Too hard on the voice.

    I k ow why his voice changed. Because james blew his vocals out recording 'so what'. For 89's garage days or garage days revisited ep. When that happened he had to relearn how to sing. However his voice was never the same. Plus age doesn't help either.

      as a fellow singer and a baritone, i absolutely understand HOW YOU FEEL,
      but they sounded the same
      the only thing that sounded different was when you started in a deep growl relaxed and worked your way up a bit
      or the reverse when you started high engaging your core then compressed it , you could certainly tell a difference there
      but the first ones' there was no difference and again.. i totally get this.
      a funny part of being a singer is that sometimes we hear ourselves in a certain way but it's now how we actually sound
      and even in a playback recording, our brains tell us it's something while others hear it as something else, it's actually quite interesting
      I've had things that i've sung (and i can do anything from metallica because of my voice type and characteristics)
      but i've had things i thought were really good and others would say .... umm no not really that's kinda shit, then i would have things that i thought were not very good and others would say, that's fucking amazing
      it's all very confusing
      i have found over the years that when i think it's good i need to bring my opinion down a significant level and when i think it's bad, i need to give myself more credit
      and somewhere in the middle you still don't get it right but it's closer to how others perceive it
      Be cool mate

    I stopped listening to them after 95 and when Jason left that was the final straw. Hetfields voice peaked with 'And justice for all'. If you listen to that record his voice was full of such hatred and he yelled properly. Even the live shows up to 93 be still had it and screamed at the crowd and what not. Then Load came along and he started to sing and then I lost all interest. They were great for 10 years only (83-93).
