Sadly it’s because music isn’t as prevalent among kids. Everyone had friends who played piano ,guitar ,harmonica etc, also in our youth not being original was looked down on. Making your own sound was how musicians shone. There are many great young musicians out there I wish music companies would nurture their talents instead of sampling and propping up the mediocre ☮️

My thoughts on your question. I don't think it's wrong for musicians today to explore technology as it improves, but it's important to remember it can at times make the human being lazy. Back then, it was such a different time for song writers. IMO -The creativity hasn't really changed for today's musicians, I think they are just as creative, it's just that the older bands had to pull magic out of thin air, or else nothing was going to happen. The musicians/writers of today are not challenged to be as creative because of the access of technology. It is certainly no crime to remake or sample a past song. But it seems to be so common now that it substitutes for actual songwriting and creativity. In film, TV, and music, we seem to have fall into a revisionist era.
Borrowing and referencing music from prior times has been going on forever and ever, and it always will. Technology has shaped it all along and technology changes, even more rapidly today than ever before. Therefore the way that people reference prior music and culture changes right along with it. To me, the creativity factor never changes from generation to generation, it just takes different forms.
I just believe that for some reason the songwriters of more recent times have a harder time tapping deep into their souls and hearts. It could be a product of mass mechanization and the computer age replacing humanity. I don't know.
@@bearballin Sounds right. When I was going to school, taking music or band wasn't compulsory, but it was really encouraged. Our concert band wasn't that hot, but our stage band, which I was also in, sounded pretty good.

In folk music, singers would take old folk songs and redo them to fit the new times. Maybe this was a continuation of that tradition.

I think it's often in honor of the song they cover. The Beastie Boys sampled heavily and it was sometimes convenience but mostly in honor I believe.
This is obviously not a "sample". Michael Jackson had permission and used the music but he created his own lyrics and of course renamed the song.
