It seems to be a strange US-American thing that you are not allowed to look at strangers who come towards you. With 656 recorded mass shootings in the US in 2023 alone, you should take a VERY close look at who is coming towards you.

Many people see it as staring, but we don't walk blindly through the neighborhood, of course we look at the person we are passing and find it quite normal. You could also say it's weird that Americans have to be so loud everywhere.
But you can say of us Germans that once you've found a friend here, you can rely on him 100%
Right, when we talk, we look the other person in the eye, that's respect for the other person.

Always taking of your shoes is wrong. It strongly depends on the occasion why and how long you're visitng.

As a genuine German, I am very surprised by the statement that Germans stare at other people. That is complete nonsense. Brief eye contact is okay, but that's about it. They perhaps prefer eye contact in conversations more than other peoples. But apart from that, they don't usually stare at anyone. At least that's the case here in Bremen and northern Germany as a whole, and I haven't seen any Germans staring on trips to other German cities either.

@@pok81Related to the “starring” aspect is the amount of personal space people grant each other. This can be as simple as the distance between people waiting in a queue. Germans, but also other Europeans, get an average closer to others than Americans.
It’s the same with “starring”, how often and for how many seconds do you look directly at people while, eg, in a supermarket? Maybe the average is one person and half a second in America and two persons and one second in Germany.
I’ve spend some time in the U.S., and several people there remarked that I “stare” at others more. Nobody ever said that to me in Germany. You can hear the same story from many people who have spend time in both countries.

I don't know where the Americans who live in Germany are. This video is full of stereotypes. I also feel a bit sorry for the man because he has never experienced the diversity of German culture. I find it very strange how Americans imagine Germans and project their experiences onto the entire German people. I'll summarize what is said about us Germans in the various videos. We never cross the red light, we are unfriendly, we stare at everyone, we constantly shout in an ugly language, we drink beer and eat sausage and woe betide anyone who puts on slippers when they visit us despite the many bad qualities we have. Then we open the window so that the visitor gets some fresh air. Then we look out the window and make sure that the neighbor separates the garbage. We clap when someone does something right. That is of course a scandal. And of course we are robots, always on time and always follow the rules etc.
I am German but if everyone in Germany were like that, I think I would emigrate. But I'm telling you, Germany is not as it is always portrayed. Why does this man live in Germany? There must be reasons why so many Americans live in Germany. I don't understand it.

Staring is considered rude in Germany, too. There is a difference between people looking and staring. We do look each other in the eye when talking. That is considered to be polite and shows that you pay attention. If someone stares too much we ask: do you want a picture of me so you don't need to stare at me? Pretty passive-aggressive now that I think about it.
If people stare at you in public transportation that probably means you are annoying them somehow. It might be the forerunner to the "hallooo".

At night my bedroom window is always open, winter, snow, no problem, only when it's super warm in summer I leave it closed and and turn on the AC...😅
Absolutely noone I know has house slippers just waiting for guests. Shoes do come off every time, but usually everyone just walks in their socks. If you ask for slippers some will be dug up from somewhere... I never heared of someone bringing their own house slippers...?
Often when there is a party with lots of people going in and out all the time the host will tell you to "just leave your shoes on" when you arrive, because it's easier for everyone and they will just clean afterwards...

    Grüßt euch !
It is true that in Germany it is normal to look at a person when you greet them!
A quick glance, you are present, you show attention!
In german we say : " Jemanden , eines Blickes würdigen ! "
    You told respect !
Now, the different kinds of watching !
There is, for example, the saying “Look at me when I talk to you! ”
Mostly when parents say something important to their children or when the child has misbehaved!
Eye contact is a form of body language and should be used with feeling!
Staring too long is rather unpleasant for both sides !
A brief glance when greeting or as a sign that you are listening or have accepted/understood/comprehended something.
    1. second ! More is not necessary !
Passive relaxed looking is no problem ! Intrusive staring is also considered unpleasant or rude behavior in Germany!
When saying “hello”, it always depends on the situation. And how you emphasize it.
    Is it reserved or energetic?
The “hello” which is not meant as a greeting is usually spoken louder and/or longer,
sometimes emphasized as a question! ( Hallohooooo ? ) Or Haaaalloo ! as a kind of request !
    This is usually about attention
A moviescene, as example: “Back in the Future s, Biff”, is a good example. “ Hellohooo, Mc Fly ?, Mc Flyhyy !!! ”
It is based on the hello when waking up or being woken up!
“Hello! Get up! You have to go to work! “
It is a reference to the fact that you should reflect, think, etc.
The facial expressions and gestures are also different from a “hello” !
    🙂

He's not entirely correct about house shoes btw - we don't have house shoes for guests most of the time. We have house shoes for ourselves in our home, but if you want to wear house shoes when you visit someone then you have to being your own house shoes. Just like several other comments already said: this video is full of stereotypes (like so many other videos about Germany). For example: you don't have to take off your shoes UNLESS the owner of a home demands it. Its even easy to see if you need to take off your shoes: if there are shoes in front of the door then you need to take off your shoes and if there are no shoes in front of the door then there is either nobody at home or the people that live there don't give a shit (and its not gross unless you deliberately stepped in dog shit. The streets here in Germany are rather clean and we clean the floors in our homes very often).

#1: I like how Mark chose video examples where all the Germans were staring. Seriously though: We stare, but not necessarily AT you, but in your direction. Mostly inside public transports. You gotta point your eyes somewhere, why not at the most interesting thing in sight? #2: Not just in Germany #3: Occasionally you are obliged by your rental contract to let some air in, otherwise mold can spread - especially in old houses. We usually don't have AC, so that's the way to get some air circulation #4: Rarely a concern for tourists #5: Oh, hallo! #6: Time for Fremdschämen 7#: Can't make it on time? Drop a line about it 8#: Follow the rules ;)

Youre not that important that everyone just stares at you like youre not from this world. If youre an obnoxious loud american tourist and draw attention to you..well then expect to get looks. Yes, eye contact is a thing..tells if you want to hide something when you avoid eye contact. But thats not stareing, that is simple awareness. Nobody knows youre not from here and we dont have a 6th sense "oh..look at them tourists". The only people that do stare are old people..and they stare at everyone and everything. Dont know if americans are so closed up or how that stereotype came to be..dont you look at people that pass by? "Everybody stares at me"..yeh..only you..just you..the whole city at once. Take everything the guy said with a big pinch of salt.
