It’s important to know that, although those properties appear relatively cheap, they are very expensive to maintain AND you won’t be able to make any modifications you want : there’s a very heavily surveillance of historical monuments.

The purpose is to maintain the history of the castle, it’s a good thing to avoid ugly transformation .

Well : to British "friends", suggestion to avoid the huge Costs problems : try to apply the Property SHARING system....If the Castle is large enough, you could make a GROUP-BUY, which may permit COST-Sharing around € 200 K / 300 K parts...So, a 1 million € Castle would be bought by 4 or 5 people....Of course, if some of the BUYERS have some Specific Professional knowledge ( Electricity, Energy, Heating, rtc... ) it could be an excellent way to to the Transaction.... Well, i won't continue this description, you can "see" the movie...Good luck :)

Chateau aka money pit. unless your net annual income is more than 2 million Euro's you cannot afford one due to the taxes, utilities and amount of staff required to maintain and repair them. Bargain and Chateau are words that should never be used together in a sentence. Part ownership of a chateau is like owning a condo when the roof needs repair or other major repairs are needed each owner will be accessed for the repairs.

@@RR98guy There are some great videos on TH-cam about renovating chateaux in France, I suggest you watch some to get better idea about the cost involved. Here is my favorite couple -

@@ExpatTheExplorer I am subscribed to several of the Chateau channels so I have a very good idea the cost. This is why I settled on a 100 year old farmhouse in Hungary. Sure their is a lot of work in the smaller properties but at least they are reasonable in cost compared to Chateau's and with exception of a complete roof replacement most can be managed by 1 or 2 people I really like France but property prices were out of my reach even for a complete ruin and I would never want to be part owner of a property like a Chateau.. I do enjoy seeing Escape to Rural France complete rebuilding project of a burned out Chateau, The Pethericks, to name a couple. The skills and money required are great. But alas as a pensioner who is a retired electrician I am full aware of how cost can get out of control. Thanks for your input.

@RR98guy Escape to rural France is a great channel. It's amazing to see what one man can do. There are some really good deals in Hungary, around Pecs and even the Balaton. My dad was planning to buy a country house with a vineyard in Hungary, he was from Hungary originally, sadly he didn't make it.

@@ExpatTheExplorer Thanks for the comment. Hungary is a great place for those who are pensioners. Wages are still not great here but if you have £ there are deals to be had.

These are horribly expensive “deals”…in fact they are NO deals at all.
Designed to empty your pockets in a big fat hurry….and if you want to “share”…buy a Condo….definately NOT a Chateau. And if the French view them so highly…why leave them in such deplorable conditions? And many of these “apartments are destitute of character and luxury. You are fool to buy into this scheme.

@@gabrieladramba1663 None : it’s a flat within a castle ! You can enjoy the land around and the common parts of the castle, but they don’t belong to you ! Besides, all the expenses related to maintaining those common parts and the land, are divided between the différents owners of the appartements : the fewer, the more expensive those charges are ! Up to several thousand a month ! And you’ll have to pay your share of the property tax…. Trust me it’s not a bargain ! More of a burden !
