Time for a pitching info dump. I'm describing pitches from a right handed pitcher, so just reverse it for lefties where directions are concerned. I'll be using the 12 hour clock to describe ball movement.
Fastball is just what it says on the tin. Speeds average 90 to 95 mile per hour or so, but 101 or 102 isn't out of the question.
The companion to this is called a Change Up. It looks exactly like a fastball when it leaves the pitchers hand, but winds up 10 or even 15 mph slower. They gear up for speed. You slow it down.
The Curveball is one of the most popular breaking pitches. The spin on the ball makes it break roughly 12 to 6 or 1 to 7. A Slider, instead breaks on a more flat plane. Like 2 to 9. Both are usually in the 85 mph range.
Last one (for now) is the Splitter. 90 mph or so, looks exactly like a fastball, until it gets three feet in front of home plate, at which point it drops off the freakin table and goes straight down.
There are others, but these are the most popular pitches by far, and I don't want to hit you with too much. Happy viewing!

    • @echoes1451
      @echoes1451 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

This is a great description of pitches. I would add this about strategy: much of pitching is about deception. Is the pitcher going to throw a fastball? Where is the fastball located...up by the chest, down by the knees, close to the batter, away from the batter? Like you said, a change-up is designed to LOOK like a fastball coming out of the pitchers hand, but is actually going 12-20 MPH slower.
A curve ball is designed to make the batter think that the ball is going to one spot, but ends up somewhere else. "Hey, this ball is going outside, so I'm not going to swing." The ball ends up over the plate for a strike. Or "Hey, this ball is going right over the plate, so I'll swing!" and the ball ends up in the dirt, almost hitting your back foot.
Then again, sometimes a pitcher just throws a straight fast ball over the plate at 98 MPH and says "Hit it if you can."
God, I can't wait for baseball season to start!

You asked at one point about what makes an excellent pitching performance. There are three types of milestone games for pitchers. One is a complete game, in which he pitches the whole game, rather than be replaced by a relief pitcher in the late innings; it usually only happens if he's doing well.
The second is a no-hitter. As the name implies, it's a complete game in which no opposing runner gets a hit. They can still get on base other ways, like being walked or being hit by the pitch.
The third is a perfect game. It's a complete game in which no opposing runner gets on base, at all. It is the crowning glory of pitching achievements. There have only been 23 perfect games in the history of Major League Baseball.

7:55 The thing about curve balls is that they're usually around 78 - 88mph with movement, whereas a fastball is 92 - 100mph and more in a straight line. When you see the batters buckle, it's usually because they were expecting a fastball, and got a slower pitch (off-speed pitch) with much more movement.
Because the batter has such little time to react, the expectation vs. reality causes a little brain fart, not allowing them to process what's happening in time to swing the bat.

  • @phinmcdermott4865
    @phinmcdermott4865 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There are many different types of pitches and pitchers. Some pitchers have a large repertoire of pitches and some throw just a few but throw them so well they're able to excel. Baseball isn't my favorite sport but here's my understanding of the basic pitches. I'm sure if I get something wrong others will correct me.
Fastball: The basic pitch everyone throws. It's hard and fairly straight. The faster a pitcher is able to throw a fastball the harder it is for a batter to catch up to it. Speed is important for a good fast ball but so is location. The hardest fastballs can be hit by major league hitters if they're thrown straight down the middle of the plate.
Curveball: Many of the pitches shown in this clip are curveballs. It's a slower pitch with a big break (or curve) to it. The movement and the speed difference from the fast ball make it a difficult pitch to hit. As with all pitches location within the strike zone is important. Curveballs that start high but drop in the middle of the zone can be hit a long way. The best curveballs usually start at a height that is enticing for the batter but then drop below the optimal hitting area.
Change Up: This is a pitch that's supposed to look to the batter like it's a fastball but it's actually slower so it fools the batter into swinging too early. Along with being slower than a fastball there is often some late movement to the pitch that makes it harder to hit.
Slider: Like the curveball this is a breaking pitch. It's faster than a curveball and the break is usually later. Curveballs tend to have a more vertical break and the slider break tends to be more horizontal.
Knuckleball: This used to be more common than it is today. The pitcher holds the ball with a strange fingertip grip that causes the ball to break in an unpredictable way. This is a slower pitch.
Split-finger fastball: Similar to a slider but the break tends to be more vertical. When a split-finger fastball works well the batter thinks it's a fastball but as they swing the ball takes a sharp break downwards.
Hope this helps and I hope others correct or add on to it.

Other comments already explained the spin and how the catcher coordinates with the pitcher, but there’s something else worth mentioning. There’s a cat and mouse game with the batter and pitcher as well. Professional players can perceive the spin on a baseball and, within fractions of a second, recognize the type of pitch. That is why when a pitcher is “in the stretch” (when they have their foot on the mound and positioned to wind up) they keep the ball either on their back thigh or in their mitt/glove.
The pitcher at the 9:37 mark in the blue uniform is Jake Arrieta. He is one of the better pitchers in the MLB, especially because his form when he throws the ball causes it to remain out of view for much of his delivery. The batter has an extremely difficult time recognizing the spin

Hey man, love the videos, but I’m gonna clear some things up for you. So the most basic pitch in baseball is a four-seem fastball. A powerful pitcher can throw a four-seemer anywhere from 95-105 mph. Most pitchers don’t usually throw that hard, because it puts enormous strain on the arm, and they would tire too quickly. Most of the pitches you see here are breaking balls. Breaking balls are balls that are thrown with different grips and wrist movements. I curveball is a ball that looks like a fastball at first, but then drops down a little bit. A slider is a ball that breaks down and away from a right handed hitter. A sinker will break down and towards a right handed hitter. A splitter breaks down suddenly before reaching the plate. A change up is slower than a fastball, but it’s thrown with the same arm movement as one, so it often fools hitters. A cut-fast ball breaks away from a right handed hitter, and usually ends at a spot that’s really difficult to hit, resulting in a lot of ground balls and pop-ups. I know this is all a bit confusing, but if you look up baseball pitches illustrated, you can see what I’m talking about. I also recommend watching Justin Verlander, Mariano Rivera, Madison Bumgarner, and Clayton Kershaw pitching performances. The best single game pitching performance in recent memory would probably be Kerry Wood’s 20 strike-out game. I highly recommend you react to that.

When a batter doesn't even swing at the ball, it's for one of two reasons:
    1) He thinks it will be out of the strike zone, which is the area over home plate and between the batter's knees and his armpit. In that area, it's presumed that a skilled batter should be able to hit the ball. Or ...
    2) The batter thinks the pitch will be in the strike zone, but there's no way he'll be able to hit it. Batters sometimes will let balls go past, but almost never to cause a thrird strike.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each team has 9 players at any one time. If someone is replaced for some reason (tactical or injury) he's out of the game, and his team continues with the new player. The offense bats the ball and tries to make runs, The defense, which includes the pitcher and fielders, tries to keep the offense from doing that.
The pitcher's job is to fool the batter into missing the ball, either because the batter thinks the ball is in the strike zone when it's not, or that the batter thinks he can hit the ball when he can't. If the batter swings at a ball in the strike zone, or if the batter doesn't swing but the pitcher has thrown a ball in the strike zone, that's called a strike. Three strikes and the batter is out. Each team gets three outs per inning. You can also make an out if you hit the ball, and a fielder catches it before it hits the ground.
The batter's job is to hit the ball and get to a base without a fielder getting the ball there first. Sometimes batters will "take one for the team", and be out at a base, but advance another runner who's already on base. If a batter touches all four bases (first, second, third, and home), his team gets a run. The game is not timed - after 9 innings (i.e., both teams getting three chances to make an out 9 times each) whoever has the most runs wins.
There are other ways to get on base, other ways to score, and other rules, but that's the basic game.

Th Pitcher-Catcher combination is called the Battery, and while there aren't any game stats for the combo, fans recognize batteries that work, those that don't. A good catcher is an assistant pitching coach who can talk a pitcher through difficulty and also studies the opposing batters looking for "tells" and traits that can be taken advantage of.
Thats why the batters are caught flat footed. The catcher sees his stance, knows he's looking for a particular pitch (you can only hit a major league fast ball if you start swinging before the pitcher has released the ball) and many . The game "inside baseball" is constant deception and efforts to make the other guy show his hand first

To answer a couple of your questions the "break" is the movement of the ball that is caused by the rotation of the laces on the ball thru the air. A typical curve ball will be thrown with foward rotation, and if thrown well the ball will break downward just before reaching the plate, thus the batter will think it's going to be a high ball and it will break into the strike zone for a strike or it looks like it's going straight to the strike zone and the batter will swing and it will break down and batter swings over it. Many different pitches with different breaks and speeds.

Most of these pitches r breaking pitches, which is where the pitcher imparts spin on the ball as he is throwing it so it will move in an unnatural way. As a batter, it’s hard to tell a pitch like that apart from a fastball in the split second u get to see the pitch, and batters need to have highly trained vision. The fact that u r so blown away by the speed of these breaking balls just gets me even more excited for u to watch a video where it is a compilation of pitches over 100 mph, I think u would really enjoy that!

the reason they don't swing is because there is a zone the ball has to be in to be considered a strike if it is outside that zone, it is considered a "ball", if the pitcher throws 4 "balls" the batter gets to walk to first base. So when the ball appears to be outside the zone, the batter thinks it will be a "ball" so he doesn't swing...then a breaking ball type of pitch will change direction and end up inside that "strike" zone.

The high one at 10:15 is called an Ephus pitch. The fastest pitcher ever was a minor leaguer in the late '50s or early '60s. He could throw a 105 mph fastball but had almost no control of location. He once threw a no-hitter but lost 10-9 due to walks and wild pitches. He once threw a pitch that hit and broke the catchers mask then bounced up and hit the umpire's mask, knocking him out and flat on his back.

First thing Protection: Helmet is armored over the ear facing the pitcher. Some batters wear a pad or guard over the joints facing the pitcher; elbow, knee and/or ankle. Also standard for ALL players is the cup; armored shell “cupping” the genitals.
Some great pitching clips would be Randy Johnson vs the bird, knuckle ball pitchers, sidearm pitchers, submarine pitches, Nolan Ryan ( 7 no hitters, riding exercise bike during interview after his last one), pitchers intimidating batters, pitcher retaliation (there are unwritten rules that are respected) and fastest pitchers.
For a good baseball movie to help with pitcher/catcher relationship and general baseball fun “Bull Durham”.
As far as swinging and falling versus not swinging, personal choice there. Would you swing for the fence or stand and hope it all works out? Where you looking at a pitch that was coming for you and broke away at the last minute? Did the batter before you or your pitcher disrespect your opponent? Was it “out of the box”, not in your strike zone, not in what the home plate umpire would consider to be your strike zone? Lots of factors at play. No side posts and crossbar here and a split second to read the ball and determine what to do.
Have fun with the research and definitely find people to talk to about it. That is where the real game is for the spectators, plenty of time to chat while waiting for things to unfold.

That movement is so effective because pitchers go from 100 mph to 60’s and 70’s. That speed difference makes it so hard for the batter to hit it. Most homeruns are hit off of fastballs (the pitches that go the fastest) because the momentum of the fast pitch with the fast swing of the bat leads to more force and energy being put back into the ball

Some have mentioned it, but they can throw various types of pitches ranging from around 60-70 MPH up to 105-ish MPH. Off-speed pitches (chang-ups, curve-balls, drop-balls, screwballs, etc.) are slower and may break in, out, down or not at all depending on what spin the pitcher puts on the ball. Other pitches (sliders, split-fingers) will nearly be the speed of a fastball but may break up, in, out or down. Even with fastballs, while they are the fastest of pitches, the best pitchers will have some sort of natural movement to them based on their release.
The best do what they can to make the release of all of their pitches look the same, so the batter has to either guess right (from pre-scouting tendencies or cheating) or determine the pitch type, speed, and location between the time it's released and the time it crosses the plate. When they guess wrong, that's when you see the batter falling all over themselves.
I'm not a huge baseball fan, but there's not much denying that getting a major league hit, let alone home run, is probably the most difficult task in all of professional sports.

  • @aidancathey5910

There are a lot of things that make a pitcher "good". Speed is important, but it takes a back seat to some other tools. Some pitchers specialize in getting batters to hit the ball on the ground. Other pitchers try to get batters to hit the ball straight up, or up enough for an easy catch.
There are 2 types of pitchers. Starting pitchers and Relief Pitchers. In a 9 inning game, a starting pitcher usually pitches 5-7 innings. Usually one relief pitchers comes in per inning after that. An average fastball from a staring pitcher is about 92-95 mph. An average fastball from a reliever is about 95-100 mph.
Sequencing is very important. This has to do with throwing some pitches faster and some pitches slower with more movement. The goal is to mess up the batters timing. If you throw a fastball, then a changeup, the batter may swing before the changeup reaches the plate. Most changeups are thrown about 10-15 mph slower than a pitchers fastball.

Typically, if a batter strikes out, it's better to strike out swinging at the pitch than just standing there watching it go by. But, if the pitch is so good that it fools him into thinking it's going to be a fastball instead of a curveball (or vice versa), then it's understandable. Sometimes you see the batter frozen like a deer in the headlights because he got fooled so badly. Love it.

At the 11:29 mark, that pitch is a knuckleball. It is, by far, the slowest pitch thrown and very few pitchers have the ability to throw it correctly. It's velocity is usually between 45-55 mph, but because there is very little spin, the ball kind of floats unpredictably. It's the toughest pitch to have to catch as well because no two knuckleballs have the same flight pattern.

One of the best pitching performances ever is Kerry Wood’s 20-strikeout game versus the Houston Astros. I believe it was only the fifth start of his career and he shut down the batters, which had three quite good hitters that couldn’t touch him. The major league record for strikeouts in a game for one player is 21 I believe, so he was one off as a rookie. You should totally react to it!

The pitch you originally thought hit the ground was used to get the hand into a certain position for spin in a certain way. Second stat was miles per hour.

In baseball a pitcher grips the ball a certain way and throws it so that the stitching on the ball disrupts the airflow around the ball in such a way that it curves on its way to the plate. A knuckleball is gripped literally by the knuckles on the fingers and kind of pushed by the fingertips through the throwing motion so as to not spin at all as it travels toward the batter. This makes the contours of the ball to catch the air in a way that makes the ball "dance" on it's delivery. If you watch close-ups of good knuckleball pitches you'll see the ball wobble as it crosses the plate. Not only do batters have a hard time tracking it to make contact, many catchers also have trouble catching the pitch. Some teams with knuckleball pitchers have had a dedicated catcher for the knuckleballer. A looping curve or a fast acting slider are amazing pitches to watch when working properly, but when a knuckleballer is having a good day it's truly a thing of beauty.

if you want some of the nastiest off-speed pitches you can look up compilations of Barry Zito, Clayton Kershaw, Greg Maddux, Max Scherzer. For fast pitchers, Roger Clemens, Aroldis Chapman, Randy Johnson. There's beauty in all different types of pitchers. The pitching game is so complex, but simple from a viewer perspective. That's why I love it. I have been studying for years, even after my baseball career.

Greatest pitching performance ever is a VERY tough one to pick, because it can be subtle. One thing to look out for is not just the speed and movement of the pitches, but the placement - getting it just at the edge of the strike zone to fool the batter (check out Greg Maddux for that).
If I had to pick one, I might say David Cone's perfect game in 1999 simply because it was so incredibly efficient: 88 pitches, 68 of them for strikes. Nothing flashy about it, just no mistakes and solid control for strikeouts and lazy fly balls. No batter even got to 3 balls.

it is all-out aerodynamics, friction and physics. The laces on baseballs are similar in function to the seams in soccer balls or the dimples in golf balls. Spin+friction+velocity+density = WOW.

There's a lot of cat and mouse between the pitcher and the batter. Sometimes the batter is expecting the pitcher will be throwing a fastball (90-100mph) to him and then the pitcher will actually throw a changeup or curveball (70-80mph) and the batter will get confused and either swing right though it or get crossed up. That's what I love about this sport, there's so much going on mentally.

in regards to you asking about knowing you can't hit it. In Baseball, the pitcher is 60 feet away from away from home plate, throwing baseballs at [in metric on average of 144 km/h around 90mph in standard] as a batter, they have less than a half a second before the ball is in the catchers mitt, so most of the times, batters tend to decide to swing before the pitcher even releases the ball. This results in batters "sitting" on pitches, where they would single out a pitch the pitcher will throw [In example, a fastball, or specifically look for whatever type of pitch he throws the most], hence why they sometimes look stupid trying to swing at a pitch 20km slower [like a curveball] than a fastball, cause they simply were looking for something else, and with so little time to adjust the human body simply can't do it.

In baseball, the catcher gives a sign before the pitcher throws the ball. That usually tells the pitcher what pitch to throw and where he should throw the certain pitch. That's how the catchers' look so good. They know what pitch is coming.

Watch the video again and pay attention to the score boxes at the top of the screen has the MPH for each pitch. One of the reasons it so hard to hit is the difference in speed, if the batter is looking for something 90 to 100 and gets 80 it's a huge difference. Check out Randy Johnson, he once threw a pitch that hit a pigeon in flight and turned it into a bunch of feathers.

Here, is a little baseball info for your edification:
    1. Pitchers throw a variety of pitches. Fastballs clock in around 90 to 100 mph. Curveballs can vary on whether it is a slow curve or faster curve but are around 60s to 80s. Changeup is like a fastball but about at least 10 mphs slower than their fastball. Knuckleball is in the 60s. Then, you have other pitchers like sliders or screwballs but they are essentially fast curves.
    2. Knuckleballs have the same idea as in soccer. The ball moves funny making it hard to hit.
    3. What type of curve the pitcher throws can vary widely depending on the pitcher. I see curves and sliders as very similar. Curves are more up and down as they curve into a spot whereas sliders slide towards or away from the batter. But obviously, depending on how they throw the pitch, you can have a hybrid between the two.
    4. In baseball, a good hitter can get a hit 3 out of every 10 trips to the batter's box. For example, it is very difficult to hit .400 for average in baseball. So the pitchers have a significant advantage.
    5. Typically, a pitcher will try to get ahead in a count by throwing some strikes right to the catcher's mitt. But when they are ahead in the count, they will tend to throw outside the strike zone to try to get the batter to swing. This is where sliders and curves can be very effective because they first appear like they are going to be in the strike zone and then move out of the strike zone.
    Hope this helps.

There are a number of different types of pitches in baseball, but they can generally be divided into fastballs and off-speed pitches.
    Fastballs:
    - Four-seam fastball - the standard fastball, thrown with one finger on each of the ball's four seams. In the majors, it's generally thrown between 90 and 100 MPH.
    - Two-seam fastball - thrown with fingers on the top two seams. Slower, but more downward movement.
    - Split-finger fastball (splitter) - index & middle finger placed on different sides of the ball. Drops HARD.
    - Cut fastball (cutter) - fastball-type speed but breaks down and in to hitters who have the same "handedness" as the pitcher (e.g. righty pitching to a righty). Mariano Rivera built his career off this pitch and broke a lot of bats with it.
    Off-speed:
    - Curveball (curve, "Uncle Charlie") - pitcher puts spin on the ball. Spins away from hitters with the same "handedness" as the pitcher.
    - Slider - like a curveball except with a bit more velocity. Pitchers will generally throw either a curve or a slider but not both.
    - Changeup - looks like a fastball coming out of the pitcher's hand, but is gripped differently by the pitcher so it comes out much slower, ideally with some downward movement. A good changeup can make the hitter look like a fool by swinging before the pitch ever arrives.
    - Screwball - reverse curveball. Spins away from hitters with the opposite "handedness" as the pitcher. Very rare and hard to throw.
    - Knuckleball - pitch thrown with VERY little spin on it. Because of this, it moves in a way that is hard for hitters to predict. Pitchers who throw these are almost always knuckleball specialists who don't throw any other type of pitch. Generally there only a few in the entire league at any given moment.
