They still intentionally walk big time Home Run hitters on occasion and it's a valid strategy. What makes the intentional walk of Bary Bonds so amazing is that the bases were loaded which means, by walking him, they gave the other team a free score. They were more worried that Bonds might hit a home run and score all four players than they were that a run would absolutely score by walking him. Also, Bary Bonds and most of the rest of the players during that era had more juice in them than a Troppicana factory (steroids).
Have you seen the video (i think SB Nation) Chart Party about if Barry Bonds played without a bat? He was walked so many times that even if he never swung a bat he'd still have the highest On Base Percentage of any player ever. Great video and Amazing stats.

They intentionally walked Barry Bonds with the bases loaded winning 8-6. Since the bases were loaded the runner on 3rd scores a run to allow the runners to all move forward a base. They were still winning 8-7 and ended up getting the next batter out to win. They felt they had a better chance of getting the next batter out since Bonds was an incredible hitter
Also intentional walks are easer now all you have to do is signal to the umpire to walk the guy don’t even half to pitch 4 balls to them any more

Also, those were not the normal uniforms the Cubs were wearing that day, it was a throwback uniform day, and the pitcher was probably not totally comfortable with the jersey top.

Michael Svoboda yeah he said it when referencing the fact that there were two bees videos saying “so this must happen quite often then.” When to my knowledge those two videos are the only instances in a very long time of bees delaying an MLB baseball game.

An intentional walk with the bases loaded is sort of like taking a hand ball in the box to prevent a score. The other team might score on the penalty kick, but by a striker catching it, he prevented at least one score. Louis Suarez did that a couple of world cups ago
The pitcher that hit the bird at the end is Randy Johnson and at the time was one of the fastest pitchers. Its like, out of any pitcher the bird could've got hit by, really Randy Johnson...

At 11:30, the problem is that the pitcher had white sleeves and a baseball is white, so that can put the batter at a disadvantage trying to spot the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand. You might have noticed that no fans are seated in center field because that distracts the batter from picking up a pitched ball.
Holy, I forgot about the Pine Tar incident! You absolutely need to react to a video containing the full story. You asked about whether or not the outcome of a game can be reversed. The Pine Tar incident is the most famous example.
San Francisco's stadium is built right on San Francisco Bay. If a ball goes out of the park into right field, it lands in the Bay. There are boats that hang out there hoping to pull a home run ball out of the Bay. Barry Bonds hit more home runs into the Bay than any other batter.

At 11:43 - players (most notably pitchers) are not allowed to wear long white sleeves because it's a visibility issue for the hitter. The white ball can get hidden from the hitter's view until the pitch arrives at home plate, creating a potential danger to the hitter (for example, if the pitched ball comes close to hitting the batter, the batter might not see it coming until it's too late) - it's more of a safety issue for the hitter than anything else. That's also the rationale for not allowing fans to sit in center field (you probably notice that often there is lots of greenery, or tarps pulled over the center field stands) - it's so the batter can see the pitched ball.
Another fun fact about that last clip: Randy Johnson became a photographer after retiring and uses a dead bird (honoring the one that he hit) as his logo
They had to cut the white sleeves off because pitchers cannot have excess WHITE on them because the baseball will blend it with the white. This is the same reason why every field has solid green walls behind the center field wall, so that batters can see the baseball with the green contrast. It is called the batters eye.
To answer your question about fans being told the game was over before it actually was, bottlegate is an example of this. NFL browns game

The commentators at 17:33 were explicitly outlining the oddity of how that guy was pitching but you couldn’t be bothered to actually listen to it to understand what was going on.

The ball stuck to the chest protector might be because there was an illegal substance applied to it by the pitcher. Pitchers do that (and get away with it a lot) because it helps their grip on the ball, and they can control the spin and the location easier with a sticky substance.

Intentional walks happen all the time, teams will usually do it with 1 out and 1st base open to try to set up a double play. They will also do it with 2 outs with 1st open and runners on 2nd and/or 3rd and a great hitter at bat. It's a valid strategy and you'll usually see it every game. However, now days the pitcher doesnt have to throw the 4 balls, they just signal and the batter is awarded 1st.

7:12 - It wouldn't be an out, but the Reds (the losing team) were arguing that the hit was a ground rule double which would've put the hitter on 2nd base instead of scoring the winning run, and the game would still be tied.
A ground rule double is when a ball hits the warning track (close to the wall), and bounces over into the stands. Their argument was that the ball bounced over, hit one of the seats and returned to the field of play. Also if a fan touches a live ball in that situation it's also a ground rule double.
I never realize how eccentric baseball is until I see a person unfamiliar with the sport watch something like an intentional walk with the bases loaded, it’s uncommon, sure, but baseball is a very odd sport and I’ve always loved every second of it.
Thats why we love it, anything can and usually does happen.
The clip at 6:30 was weird because the guy ran 3 bases to score, but since the ball hit the sign (that is technically not a part of the field) it would've been counted as a ground rule double, so he should've only been allowed to advance to third base automatically, thus not scoring. But since they didn't rule it right away, the game ended on the score, and the guy wanted to find the umpires to try and challenge the call, but they had already gone. It wasn't a case of whether he should be out or not, but a case of whether or not he should have been allowed to score, versus only getting the automatic double from a ground rule double.
May I suggest MLB Best Fights? Heads up, a lot of fights start when the batter is hit by a pitch. This is usually because the other team has done something the pitcher doesn't like, or broken one of the unwritten rules of baseball during that game. Just so you aren't confused if you see what looks like fights starting for no reason.
The one starting around 6:15...those advertisements are out of the field of play. if the ball touches the field and then touches anywhere above the main wall, it is supposed to be a double, and everyone already on base advances 2 bases. So the runner that scored should have only advanced to 3rd since he started on 1st. You can challenge a ruling, but only have (at the time) 30 seconds to notify the umps you are doing so. That elapsed and the umps were off the field since that was the winning run. So the losing team was unable to challenge.
Intentional walks are absolutely legal and a part of the strategy. If you don’t want to pitch to a guy, you walk him, but you’re putting an extra guy on base, an extra runner that can score. It’s a risk vs. reward play.

At 12:00 the reason his sleeves were cut because pitchers are not allowed to have sleeves or sunglasses or arm bands or any other extra accessory because they are considered a distraction to the hitter
Buck Showalter is one of the best managers of the era. His gamble of intentionally walking Bonds with the bases loaded paid off as the next batter lined out.
The cutting of the sleeves is because the white sleeves can hide the location of the white baseball when he is pitching it. Thus, the umpires made him get rid of the white sleeves which he initially tried to roll them up out of sight, but they eventually just cut them off.
1. The reason the ball stuck to the chest protector was because there was probably a bit of pine tar on the ball (pine tar gives you a better grip on the ball to throw it better)
2. Breaking three bats in the same plate appearence (going to the base and trying to get a hit) is rare, but just breaking a bat in general is not as rare
3. Barry bonds hits a lot of home runs so they intentionally walked him (which is allowed but now you can just indicate to the umpire that you want to intentionally walk the batter). They walked him to avoid getting a home run, but the main reason they booed was because there was a player on every base so it would bring a run in.
4. You can’t have white sleeves because it can blend in with the ball and put the batter at a disadvantage
There are 2 major strategies behind intentionally walking a batter. 1) the pitcher & his team are afraid of the power & prowess of the batter (which we saw here, with Barry Bonds), & 2) knowing that it'll be much easier to strike out the next batter. 'If this guy actually swings at my pitches, he'll probably get a hit, but I know that I can get the next guy out'.
Intentional walks are still allowed in-fact, a few years ago, they added a rule a batter can be intentionally walked by the manager of the team pitching pointing to first base. they did it to speed up the game by a few pitches but the old way of doing it is still technically allowed (just a waist of time).
Intentional walks have been a part of the game for as long as anyone can remember. It has even been enshrined in the rule book - starting a few seasons ago, the defensive team can intentionally walk a batter without throwing any pitches. All they have to do is tell the batter to go to first base.
Barry Bonds holds the records for most home runs in a season, and most in a career. He was the most feared hitter of his era, and received many intentional walks. What makes this situation interesting is that the bases were loaded. If a batter walks with the bases loaded, he drives in a run, so when they walked him they cut their two-run lead in half. It's unusual to see an intentional walk even with just a runner on first base. What this meant was that the manager of the Diamondbacks (the defensive team) thought he'd rather face the next batter with a one-run lead than pitch to Bonds with a two-run lead. It was risky, because with a one-run lead and the bases loaded a hit would probably have won the game. In the second case, with Josh Hamilton at bat, the intentional walk wasn't as risky because the defensive team had a three-run lead.
The reason they cut the pitcher's sleeves is that the opposing team complained that his undershirt made it hard for their batters to see the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand.
The pitcher at 17:34 is jumping forward when he throws, shortening the distance between himself and the batter. The pitcher is required to have one foot in contact with the pitching rubber when he starts his throw (the rubber is the rectangular bar at the top of the mound). It's impossible to keep the foot in contact throughout the pitch, but it's supposed to start there. Carter Capps, the pitcher, was stretching the rule past its breaking point. They have clarified the rule to make it clear that Capps' motion is illegal.
The oddity with the intentional walks is that there were already runners on all the bases, meaning that a walk would force one in to score. So they literally have away a free run in order to avoid the risk of the batter getting a hit which would score two runs, or getting a grand slam home run which would have scored four runs.
As someone who's been to Chase Field multiple times yes they do have a roof that they can open or close before or during a game depending on the weather outside
They had to cut off that pitchers white sleeves because the white sleeves are the same color as the ball. This will confuse the batter trying to hit it and is against the rules so they had to cut them off.
That San Fransisco/ Arizona game with the bees is kinda scary, because the area is full of Killer bees. This swarm seems a bit too passive to have been killer bees but no one knew that at the time...so yikes!
Bee swarms are a common thing during certain times of the year and normally they don't cause such issues.
But yeah, we don't mess with bees in the Southwest. Killer bees are called that for a reason.
There has been a case where the last minute of a game had to be played a month after it concluded. Heat vs Hawks game in which the officials incorrectly ruled Shaq had fouled out of the game.
With the Barry Bonds clip, the score was 8 (Arizona) to 6 (Giants). Bonds was so feared as a homerun hitter, it was easier for the other team to let the Giants score 1 run by walking him with the bases loaded, than to take the chance that he would hit a grandslam ( a homerun that scores 4 points) which would have made the score 10 (Giants) to 8 (Arizona.) I think he was hitting homeruns every 3 at bats back then.

1. On the rain clip, at chase field, the roof is actually retractable, but they had it closed. 2. On the one with Barry Bonds, (giants) yes it is allowed, but you can just say "intentional walk" today, instead of pitching. 3. The reason the man cut his sleeves is because the pitcher cannot wear white sleeves, because you cannot see the ball.

Intentional walks are totally legal and are a part of the strategy of the game. The thing that was crazy about the instance in the video is that the “bases were loaded”. Meaning there was a guy on each base. So a walk means a run scores. They rather give up one run and face another batter than face the batter they walked. Intentionally giving up a run with an intentional walk is almost unheard of.
Intentionally walking a batter with bases loaded is definitely a compliment of some sort to the batter but it’s definitely a complement a batter does not want to get
You didn’t get the intentional walk clips, those were with the BASES LOADED. Which means it automatically lets in a run. Only in the rarest of situations would you ever WANT to do that.

6:19 - if a fair ball bounces into the seats, or is touched by a fan then it's called a ground rule double. That means the batter has to stop at 2nd base and each base runner can only advance 2 bases. If the ball does not bounce into the stands then it's still a live ball and the batter and baserunner can keep running.
The reason that's important here, is because the winning run scored from 1st base. If it's ruled a ground rule double then he would've had to stop at 3rd. The Cardinals were celebrating while the Reds were arguing that it was a ground rule double, the runner should have to go back to 3rd and the game would still be tied.

At this stage they are really not hostile unless you put the queen in danger. I've actually had 30 to 50 crawling peacefully on me while I photographed a swarm.

Intentional walks still happen but it’s not like that. They don’t have to throw the ball anymore, now they just say and the the player goes to first base.
7:58 Kind of. When Southern California played Harvard in football way back, the call "Game over" was never made. However, Harvard assumed they'd won the game the moment a player was tackled. They even started letting the Harvard marching band walk onto the field. Except the play wasn't over. the ball was still live. The Southern California team kept passing the football from player to player as they ran clear across the field past confused Harvard players and plunging through the confused band to score the winning touchdown. That was spectacular.
It wasn't Harvard, it was the University of California ("Cal")
8:24 - You never see an intentional walk with the bases loaded because it'll force in a run for the opposing team. However Bonds was a prodigious Home Run hitter, the pitcher would rather surrender 1 guaranteed run than possibly 4(grand slam HR). The fans were booing because the other team kept walking Bonds and wouldn't give him a chance to hit.
for the walks with the bases loaded it is both a compliment to the batter and dependent on the game situation. These walks are with 2 out in the 9th inning meaning one more out ends the game and both games are separated by 4 runs. If the batter hits a Home Run with the bases loaded they score all runners on base (3) + themselves =4 so suddenly the game would be tied. The coach is basically saying to the batter "you are the scariest person on earth right now because I am convinced you will hit a Home Run if we give you the chance, so i am not going to let you" This is basically a baseball equivalent to playing keep away in soccer against a team with a star like Messi or Ronaldo. We will keep the ball as far way from that guy as possible because we know if he gets the ball he WILL score and we are fucked.

At 7:30 the umpires left the field before the team could ask for a review. The ball bounced off the screen above the wall so it would've been a ground rule double which advances every runner 2 bases. So in that case the runner that scored wouldn't have since he advanced 3 causing the other team to lose the game because the umpires left
It's called an intentional walk. What made this instance interesting was the fact that the bases were loaded so when they walk him it will push in the runner from third and give them a score. They were willing to give up that run to keep Barry Bonds from hitting. It was actually the smartest choice in my opinion. Barry Bonds was a BEAST.

7:50 what you are describing happens very very rarely. If a team believes the umpires enforced a rule incorrectly, they can play the game under protest. In the history of baseball, there have been very few times where a protest is successful. If it’s successful, the game is essentially re-played from the point of when the protest was initiated. Something you could look into.
This is why baseball is my favorite sport. It's the one sport where anything can happen because of the loose structure of it. A video recommendation is MLB revenge moments.
Molina(catcher) was putting a little pine tar(stick-um) on the ball for the pitcher. I probably had some on his chest protector....when the ump hands him the ball. He can put a little on and then toss ball to the pitcher (helps with grip and spin)..... Its illegal but everybody does it one way or the other
Keep in mind there’s 162 games per team in a season, so that is 2430 games per year plus playoffs and exhibition games. So anything rare and odd will have a few examples just because of how many games are played in baseball.
Chase field has a lot of issues due to being in Arizona, it has to be air conditioned due to Arizona Summers being spectacularly hot, but the original AC would not cool people above a certain point in the upper deck, so the nosebleeds were extroadinarily hot originally. IN adition its Arizona, which does not receive much rain so if they work on the roofs they don't find out if they didn't weather proof it enough until after rain falls on it. Randy Johnson Was not sued by Peta for the incident where a dove suicided itself on a pitch, a Toronto Blue Jays player from the 80s was when he accidently hit a bird while taking a practice swing

Yes, the league office has overruled plays, called a protest. A manager can object, the ump will notify league officials by signaling a P to them. Only about a half a dozen times has it happened, and they'll restart a game from a certain point the next time the two teams meet.

Most MLB announcers are quite good at explaining what's going on in confusing situations.
If you find yourself not understanding what's happening, you're probably not alone in your confusion. The announcers are aware of this.

I can't find a video of it, but the craziest thing I've ever seen during a game was between the Royals and the White Sox back in 2002 (I think). While KC was up to bat, a father and son ran out onto the field and stabbed the Royals' first base coach for seemingly no reason. A brawl then ensued. iirc when asked why they did it they said it was because the first base coach had it coming and that they'd be famous. Crazy people out there...
7:58, there was one, Kansas city Royals vs. New York Yankees 1983: George Brett hits a home run in the 9th inning to give the royals the lead, the yankees argued that Brett used too much pine tar on his bat (batters can legally use it, but can only so much). The umpires inspected the bat and disallowed the home run, calling him out and ending the game. The royals filed a protest with the commissioner. Days later, he reversed the ruling on the grounds that the pine tar wouldn't affect the distance a ball was hit. The had to go back to New York to finish that inning. 😅

They still do intentional walks, but now they don't have to "Pitch Out" the ball four times, they just say that they're allowing the batter to go to first. It was better when they had to throw, because there were occasional oddities that came from making mistakes

Yes. Someone wound up having to replay an inning because of some obscure rule. Both teams came out later and played that one inning with no fans. Can't help beyond that.
As to the game, I really think so. I remember something about a game being judged to have too much potential for violence, so they didn't let the fans come at all. I think it was not too long ago in Baltimore.
Yeah in Baltimore they played a game without the crowd because of rioting.
you asked a question about the end of the game not being the end of the game.... There was something called The Merkle Boner from 1908 (copied from wikipedia).... In the bottom of the 9th inning, Merkle came to bat with two outs, and the score tied 1-1. At the time, Moose McCormick was on first base. Merkle singled and McCormick advanced to third base. Al Bridwell, the next batter, followed with a single of his own. McCormick trotted to home plate, apparently scoring the winning run. The fans in attendance, under the impression that the game was over, ran onto the field to celebrate, Meanwhile, Merkle ran to the Giants' clubhouse without touching second base.... Cubs second baseman Johnny Evers noticed this, and after retrieving a ball and touching second base, he appealed to umpire Hank O'Day, who later managed the Cubs, to call Merkle out. Since Merkle had not touched the base, the umpire called him out on a force play, meaning that McCormick's run did not count.. The run was therefore nullified, the Giants' victory erased, and the score of the game remained tied. Unfortunately, the thousands of fans on the field (as well as the growing darkness in the days long before large electric lights made night games possible) prevented resumption of the game, and it was declared a tie. The Giants and the Cubs ended the season tied for first place and had a rematch at the Polo Grounds, on October 8. The Cubs won this makeup game, 4-2, thus the National League pennant.

Your assumption that the situation of the game dictates the use of the intentional walk is spot on. They are betting that by giving up 1 run with a 2 run lead & Bonds at the plate that the next batter will make an out, which he did. Baseball is, in essence, a situational game. The situation of the moment dictates how the game is played, & Bonds was so good that they'd rather give up a run & give the next guy up a chance to win the game instead of Bonds. Its amazing that as an American , I've watched baseball all my life, and I'm watching someone who has not, and I can't understand why he doesn't understand it as well as I do. Weird how you take things for granted. I guarantee I'd be worse If I were watching soccer or cricket.
Intentional walks are totally legal and a legit strategy. It's basically saying, this guy is way too good of a hitter so we're gonna let him go to 1st without even giving him a chance to hit and whichever one of his teammates is up next to hit has to beat us instead. It makes sense because if you face a team with one or two really good hitters and a bunch of average hitters you would definitely rather face the average guys in a big moment of the game. Baseball is a team sport so this is why it's really important to have good hitters throughout your lineup and not rely too much on one guy cause the opposing team can essentially eliminate him as a threat by doing this. What makes the situation you saw even crazier was that bases were loaded so intentionally walking Barry Bonds not only sent him to 1st base but also scored a run for his team because the opposing team saw it as worthwhile to give up a single run rather than give Bonds the chance at scoring multiple runs.

Catchers put pine tar somewhere on their equipment and dab their fingers on it so that they get a good grip on the baseball. Apparently in the second clip the ball stuck to the pine tar on his chest plate.
