It's so funny because a while back, the Finnish government went through a procurement process for a new fighter, and all of a sudden, these F-35 ads started popping up everywhere
This is like advertising for hospitals. If I break a leg, I'm not going to shop around. I'm going to the nearest emergency room. Even if we were talking about seeing something like a non-urgent appointment with a new general practitioner or specialist, I'm going to call the nearest clinics and check if my insurance works with them and maybe check if they have proper facilities for my needs (do you guys test for x, do you guys do xrays, etc). If I don't like a doctor, I'm going to find the second closest doctor and try them instead or maybe get a referral from a friend / family member.
I am not sure that the advertising has any impact, except possibly on hiring. Having worked for another highly technical part of the US government for decades, in my experience, the procurement process is such that the civilian and military engineers, scientists, lawyers, and procurement staff are held to a very high standard for making recommendations to the top decision-makers that are backed up by facts and meet all regulatory requirements. The elected officials are another question because it is hard to judge how contributions by the big contractors might or might not have any weight in budget decisions. It is after a contract has been signed that I think political impacts come into play, depending on whose district the system is being built in.
Answer prediction before I watch the video: these ads are (complementary to) recruitment ads for the army because they showcase cool equipment you'll get to use, and also serve to get people excited, as opposed to mortified, that this equipment is what their taxes are going to
@@stormyprawn They do though. That's literally their entire job. To meet the demands of the people who want other people dead or to protect people from being dead with a piece of equipment that the person who wants protecting/killing, pays for as well as boosts investments
yet its that militaristic country that has a sphere of protection placed around South America, that'll protect your citizens lives with our own soldiers if you were to ever get invaded.
You missed the more cynical possibility that many of their contracts are cost-plus, so they have incentives to drive up costs -- which means normalizing a lot of overhead for communications and such. Regulated utilities do the same thing.
You have perfected the art of the video essay. Just the right amount of humour and editing. Humour never oversteps the actual content and is only used ocassionally to lighten things up I love it
Before watching the video, I'd say it's because when everyone sees an ad, that ad will inevitably reach its customer. We're not buying new fighter jets or stealth bombers right now, but someone is (and we might be in a position do so one day) so it's important for these companies to market and familiarize us with their products. When it comes time for Congress to earmark some funds and the DoD to choose a contractor for a project, the people making that decision are generally going to choose the company they're more familiar with. Furthermore, when the public appetite for budget cuts come, you generally want the public to associate your company and your products as being the best on the market to insulate you from said cuts.
The DOD Fiscal Year 2023 budget request figure of 700mil is not the defense contractors spending, it's the defense department own budget request to congress for spending. That advertising money is for Army, Navy, and Air Force recruiting commercials, football game flybys, public relations, etc. Going through their investor reports is how you would figure that number out, but I also checked and found no hard answer, meaning the advertising revenue is not per-company basis, but per project basis.

It amazes me that I have gotten YT ads form Lockheed Martin & Boeing before videos but pew pew manufacturers can't advertise on YT. And how is Google so screwed up that they dont put ads for automotive industry companies before car videos or ads for products relative to the content of the video? I also dont understand why there isn't a de-mil'd version of the C-17 for freight hauler like FedEx to buy. Imagine how much freight they could move with those instead of their tired DC-10s. They can militerize a 737 so it can drop torpedoes but can't make a civilian version of a cargo plane?
Probably because the DC-10 is minmaxed for civilian operation. A civilian fleet of C-17s would have to hire a lot of former mil personnel to avoid the huge costs of training a large batch of maintenance crew and pilots for them to get a rating on that plane.
Great presentation! I visited DC earlier this year, and I saw literally the exact F-35 engine ad on a poster at the Metro. Now I know why they didn't call me back.
The “military industrial complex” as most people call it hasn’t properly existed (in that form at least) since the 1990s, Ryan McBeth has a really great video on it that I recommend watching.
We have this in Britain too. Inside the Westminster Underground station there is always a large BAE advert for either Military Submarines or fighter jets technologies. Westminster is where the Houses of Parliament are, for anyone who doesn’t know.
Those ads are for government employees who work in procurement. You see those ads in DC for the same reason you see “For your Consideration” ads for movies in LA. Those posters are for voters in The Oscars Academy.
Is it baffling? I feel like this video is clickbait. Of course fighter jets aren't advertised for you specifically. They are hoping the right people will come across it 🙄 It is basic economic marketing. I am so tired of this "they want you to..." attitude. I am like: dude, just say if you have no clue. And I am honest in my self reflection when I say: I am ragequiting this video after 27 seconds because I don't understand why someone would care. Talk about wasting time. You absolutely can buy current generation jet engines. But the operation cost per hour and maintenance contacts will bleed you dry faster than child support. Just tell ICAN you are building a land speed racer.
I highly doubt that. A wealthy civilian could buy an older jet engine but there's no way you could just go out and buy a modern adaptive cycle engine. They have all sorts of classified tech in them that can't fall into the wrong hands.
I wish I would get fighter jet advertisement. If companies are gonna advertise things I'm not gonna buy anyway, might aswell advertise something awesome
Really fascinating and well made video! DC is one the most unique cities in the US. I’m glad you went into so much detail about their metro and it’s ads (and that your local rep probably doesn’t take the metro, but their assistants definitely do).

thanks for the video ! it's crazy the number of people who'll be like "yeah look at these adverts manufacturing consent they're so cool !" while being entirely aware they're propaganda and just being proud of being easy targets of this propaganda
Same reason absolutely massive industry group representatives pour tons into advertising despite having no product and not selling to consumers or gigantic petroleum orgs run Super Bowl ads. Branding
Like this video is just absolutely insane and incredibly misleading, verging on being utterly wrong and a crazily ignorant conspiracy theory. It’s 1000x more along the lines of they want to be known as the engineering/manufacturing firm that’s good enough to make F35s than it is some insane conspiracy that they’re trying to brainwash the individuals making purchasing decisions for the military. Please just skim a single advertising or marketing course or textbook for any product or company and realize it’s the exact same thing with cheese makers and car washes and literally the entire field of marketing.
Answer prediction before I watch the video: these ads are (complementary to) recruitment ads for the army because they showcase cool equipment you'll get to use, and also serve to get people excited, as opposed to mortified, that this equipment is what their taxes are going to
They are advertising to the public that they will be safe, and to enemies that they will not win.
Why would a company care about any of that
Short answer: they don't
@@stormyprawnthey don't, but they care about taxpayer dollars and their lobbyists in court
@@stormyprawn They do though. That's literally their entire job. To meet the demands of the people who want other people dead or to protect people from being dead with a piece of equipment that the person who wants protecting/killing, pays for as well as boosts investments
@@glazredfield9489as if the enemy wouldn’t keep them running after taking over
Pea brained assesment lol
2:10 probably is, since the USA is a militaristic country that was built on wars. you don't get these advertisements here in brazil
yet its that militaristic country that has a sphere of protection placed around South America, that'll protect your citizens lives with our own soldiers if you were to ever get invaded.
You missed the more cynical possibility that many of their contracts are cost-plus, so they have incentives to drive up costs -- which means normalizing a lot of overhead for communications and such. Regulated utilities do the same thing.
Great point
You have perfected the art of the video essay.
Just the right amount of humour and editing.
Humour never oversteps the actual content and is only used ocassionally to lighten things up
I love it
“Just by an F-18, bro” - Department of Warcr… uh defense
they don't have F-18s in my local dealer 😢
I saw a soccermom stuff the last f-4 on her trunk the other day... I was devastated they had a 60% off on those.
3:18 “That’s like all the percents, they don’t make em any bigger” lmfao 🤣 😂
110% lolz
1:36 i loved how you were honest with us🤣🤣
The DOD Fiscal Year 2023 budget request figure of 700mil is not the defense contractors spending, it's the defense department own budget request to congress for spending. That advertising money is for Army, Navy, and Air Force recruiting commercials, football game flybys, public relations, etc. Going through their investor reports is how you would figure that number out, but I also checked and found no hard answer, meaning the advertising revenue is not per-company basis, but per project basis.
As a Eastern European, this was fascinating.
Everytime I see a targeted ad about rafael/GDLS/Lockheed Martin I just go
"Hell yeah"
I love your content and your style of video production. Who doesn't watch to the end?? All the snarky stuff is there... well, most of it.

I know that there is a civilian version of the Chinook helicopter
Probably because the DC-10 is minmaxed for civilian operation. A civilian fleet of C-17s would have to hire a lot of former mil personnel to avoid the huge costs of training a large batch of maintenance crew and pilots for them to get a rating on that plane.
I like your sarcasm, ngl
I also got ads for military equipment, and in my country I couldn't even legally buy them AND THAT'S GOOD ACTUALLY.
Also RTX sounds like a crypto scam rather than an international arms conglomerate.
There is a reason why these ads are everywhere in DC and nowhere in a place like Des Moines

What's the video name?
@LordVader1094 just google the military industrial complex by ryan mcbeth

@@funkymarco4411 haha that seemed kinda obvious, right?
Your source is the biggest shill of the military industrial complex?
We have this in Britain too.
Inside the Westminster Underground station there is always a large BAE advert for either Military Submarines or fighter jets technologies.
Westminster is where the Houses of Parliament are, for anyone who doesn’t know.
I thought westminster is where the abbey is.
00:13 i saw a Gripen NG ad in youtube
Those ads are for government employees who work in procurement. You see those ads in DC for the same reason you see “For your Consideration” ads for movies in LA. Those posters are for voters in The Oscars Academy.
There are companies that exclusively make ads for other companies and CEOs. It's really weird. It's like trying to appeal to five guys in the world.
You mean advertisement companies? Why is that weird.
The whole capitalist mode of economy is fake
@@devmin_dot_exe6551Lol I don’t think you understood what he said
As a non-american, this is baffling. I have never seen advertisements about military hardware/weapons.
Is it baffling? I feel like this video is clickbait. Of course fighter jets aren't advertised for you specifically. They are hoping the right people will come across it 🙄
It is basic economic marketing. I am so tired of this "they want you to..." attitude.
I am like: dude, just say if you have no clue. And I am honest in my self reflection when I say:
I am ragequiting this video after 27 seconds because I don't understand why someone would care. Talk about wasting time. I am going to finish the 'watch later' list I created. It will take one week. Then in 2025 I am quitting my TH-cam hobby.

You absolutely can buy current generation jet engines. But the operation cost per hour and maintenance contacts will bleed you dry faster than child support. Just tell ICAN you are building a land speed racer.
Measure fuel economy with yard per gallons
I highly doubt that. A wealthy civilian could buy an older jet engine but there's no way you could just go out and buy a modern adaptive cycle engine. They have all sorts of classified tech in them that can't fall into the wrong hands.
@@Skrenja You can, ITAR tech is genuinely easy to buy as long as you are a US citizen.
Well made video. Usually these types of videos just sort of tell you what you already think but you had some cool insight. Thanks man

I wish I would get fighter jet advertisement. If companies are gonna advertise things I'm not gonna buy anyway, might aswell advertise something awesome
Yeah, I remember that one time Raytheon made me pilot the mech.
Really fascinating and well made video! DC is one the most unique cities in the US. I’m glad you went into so much detail about their metro and it’s ads (and that your local rep probably doesn’t take the metro, but their assistants definitely do).

>Pentagon metro stop is a primary congregating point for workers from Pentagon.
I'm genuinely curious if intersection between a "set of people working at pentagon" and a "set of people using metro" exists.
lots of ppl that work at the Pentagon take the metro its often the busiest station in Virginia and lots of people who work at the Pentagon are just normal people who cant talk publicly about what they do at work.
Why do i get advertisements for online casinos specifically stating that they're not accessible where i live

didnt an F-16A go on sale a while ago? oh well, theres always the older stuff lol
Same reason absolutely massive industry group representatives pour tons into advertising despite having no product and not selling to consumers or gigantic petroleum orgs run Super Bowl ads. Branding
Mainly this is an understanding advertising theory thing, nothing remotely specific or distinct to the defense industry or jets or anything like that
Like this video is just absolutely insane and incredibly misleading, verging on being utterly wrong and a crazily ignorant conspiracy theory. Another classic example of some ignorant clueless person making the wildest least helpful video to spread misinfo and fear monger instead of spending even 5 minutes not being completely wrong and insane
