RACING a 5k after a year of MARATHONS

  • Racing my first track race back after a year of marathoning! Let's just say it didn't go to plan. Racing over a minute slower than my fastest 5k stung. Even though I literally say in the video that this race was just to see where I was at, I really did believe I could do something GREAT. That's alright though I am just out of shape and it's time to stop messing around. ALSO MICA SUB 16:00mins, first real track race back. She is in for an awesome season! Her video drops on SUNDAY.

It sucks racing when you're not at your fittest, especially when you've been putting in work. But the race is important information. Racing is honest; a hard race gives you nowhere to hide, but also gives you the knowledge you need to build from where you are. Otherwise, it's all guesswork. Your talent and cumulative workload is all still there. You're dealing with a lot that you didn't have to deal with at BYU, in addition to trying new distances and training. You'll get it all calibrated, and that ability and work ethic will show up in the results sooner rather than later. Keep your head up!

Be patient. Long terms gains from the aerobic fitness and strength of marathon training may take months (if not years) to pay off for the 5km-10km-half. When I qualified for the Olympic Trials in college (in a few marathon attempts) the following 12 months after that I had my best xc season ever (8km-10km) and then later that year ran PRs in everything from the 800m to the 10km on the track. It just takes time to recover from an actual marathon race and build that speed efficiency back sometimes. Stay healthy, positive and have fun!

i thought you might run 15:20, i was damn close in predicting that holy shit
its always interesting to see how your body remembers your peak performance. after all the marathon training, the illness during the winter break, i think 15:15 is an excellent start for a good year 2024, all the best!

I know you thank us (the audience)for supporting you but it goes both ways. These videos (the goods and the bads of running) help me so much staying positive and support me. Currently I’m in a lower spot in my own training, but videos like these show me that I’m not alone and I’ll get over this hump.

Hi...from the suburb north of NYC. First, as a Bostonian from Newton, it was terrific feeling like being back home. Too bad it was not later in the spring...being at BU means a short jog to Fenway to watch the Red Sox!!! So, that happy story you were looking for was the tape itself and what it meant to many of the runners who follow you. First, congrats to Mica!!!! Terrific to watch you run. Second, to Adam...your comments after the run showed that even exceptional runners have times that just do not meet their goals. I wish that I could express myself as well as you did when my goals are not met. Your standards are high and how you try and meet your goals are lessons for me. I'm never going to be a great runner or jogger, but what you teach me about setting goals and doing my best to reach them is what was happy for me in the video. Sorry that all did not go well but future times are down the road. Nice to see you at Whole Foods.

I just ran my first race since CIM and it was like yours (in that I ran significantly slower than my "worst case scenario", 20:53 for 4 miles...). It's hard to see race times that are slower than things you did in workouts in the past, but you forget how fast 14 minute pace is (or 15 minute pace, for that matter). It'll take a little time to get back there; if we're still slow a month from now, then go ahead and worry.

I get that athletics in general are very dependent of experience, time training, and genetics, but its hilarious to me listening to you talk like a 15:15 is the slowest 5k time to ever exist, meanwhile me breaking 17:00 was one of my greatest athletic accomplishments. But then again I bet if I tried to max on bench and hit only 295 instead of like 335 I would be speaking similar to you speaking on your 15:15.. Point is, there are levels to all walks of life my friend and you are young having plenty of time to continue training and come back stronger and more fit.

I genuinely enjoy watching these videos but here is a small tip that helped me. First off I must say that I am nowhere on the same level as you are but I feel that I have had a similar thought process. Stop using negative self-talk on your race day period. Not only is this wasted energy but saying things like I feel horrible and not sure if my wife took all of the good racing mojo is not helping your mind and your body. If you outwardly say more positive things your results will mirror that. This is hard for everyone, me included its just something ive noticed when watching your videos

Dude, your body specializes for certain types of running. Marathon and 5k are NOT compatible. You gotta choose, you can't do both. There is no such thing as a 'fit' runner. Your body adjusts to what you do. If you wanna run 5k, you gotta train fast. If you wanna marathon, you gotta train longer and slower. There is no cookie cutter do-it-all workout program. For 5k, don't run a step over 40 miles a week. And put in a minimum pace for your workouts. Nothing slower than 5:30. No warmups either. Cold starts, and let your body adjust to the faster turnover. I ran 15:14 off 22 miles a week doing that.
