    Hi there, thanks for a great episode! About the toasty toes yarn-I think it’s a DK weight but in the US, 4-ply refers to the number of plies in the finished yarn, not the weight, which we would refer to as sock or fingering. Hope that helps!

    When you ply two colours no matter how, you tend to get the barber pole effect. If that’s what you want, you are on to a winner. If you don’t, you need to talk to your spinners group for advice. You may be able to blend with your carding boards or more easily with a drum carder. This is an exciting journey. Insofar as textures, try to get some BFL. It’s a lovely rustic spin but not scratchy. Ahhh I do actually like that effect and for my practice run I'd quite like to have a noticeable ply. I've always loved the look of hand spun yarn. I can't wait to have my own

    Ahh, had a big comment going then forgot to hit enter and left the page 😅. But basically - I am SO happy for you that you got your dream place! It's going to look amazing and I wish I was there to help and join in all the fun. Looking forward to seeing it transform. Also feel exactly the same way about spinning and natural fibres and colours. Your Gotland looks gorgeous and I hope you feel up to spinning it soon. What you've spun so far looks really good, and plying is magical.

      Oh no! I've done that so many times while commenting too. Thank you, I'm so happy about the building and sharing more here. Yeah natural fibres are just incredible to work with and so worth the having to hand wash. I'm excited about the Gotland. I think it's going to be really beautiful

    So great to see you again! Joji Locatelli has some great one-skein shawl and cowl patterns that would be great for the single ply fingering weight yarn you received.

    • @TheMakersCorner
      @TheMakersCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's a really great idea. I had a lot of fun knitting my last shawl (for a gift) and someone else recommended adding a mohair to it to make a bigger shawl so I'm looking at that too. Thank you so much for being here again! I really appreciate it x

  • @janilze
    @janilze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I know that 4 ply is what other places call what I think of as fingering, but it's kinda funny to hear you talk about a single ply 4 ply lol. I have a single ply fingering weight alpaca yarn that I also don't know what to do with. In a similar vein, I wonder if the DK you have that is labelled as 4 ply, is literally 4 plys making up a DK weight. BTW, congratulations on acquiring your dream building!

    • @TheMakersCorner
      @TheMakersCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think us Brits and even sometimes the Aussies refer to fingering as 4 ply and DK as 8 ply. Old habit! I think you're right about it being DK but 4 literal plies of yarn. And thank you. I'm so excited about the shop :)

    Fantastic news on the property. I'll have to visit once you're up and running. Personally, I've kind of given up on knitting sock for myself at the moment... Got a pile of yarn to make tube socks for the kids though. Endless stockennette in the round is very calming. I love that jumper. I still plain on making one of her patterns, but maybe next year now. I've almost gotten rid of the entirely of my SW/Nylon stash and plan to try my hand at knitting a tank top or dress in linen come summer... So many ideas not enough needles at the moment. I am all for campaigning BWM to bring back rustic. I stocked up when I heard they where discontinuing, but will run out eventualy. Their ready to spin top is lovely. I have a bag of it for when I start teaching myself to spin, I'm hoping to use the hand spun after to have some fun dying with the kids and then it'll all go into a blanket for the fam. Those blues and that new grey are #chefskiss. Will be putting them on my birthday list for when you get your peruvian base in. :) Thanks for the podcast, and sorry for the essay lol.

      Always so lovely to read your comments. You know how much I appreciate your support. It really means so much. Perhaps we need to start a formal campaign with BWM the 'replacement' for rustic isn't non superwash unfortunately or I'd buy that and it has silk in it which makes it way too drapey. I'm sure it's beautiful but not for me. You'll definitely need to visit for sure!

    • @RAHowes
      @RAHowes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheMakersCorner I got a sneaky fondle of the "replacement" yarn when I took the MIL up to the mill shop for mother's day. Its soft and pretty but yes, SW unfortunitely. I'm hoping they continue to stock the top, which will mean they are still sourcing the non-sw and can potientially bring rustic or something like it back. The real problem is demand, as long as people buy the SW over the non they'll focus on that for sales.

    • @TheMakersCorner
      @TheMakersCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RAHowes I am totally committed to bringing as much non sw to my shop as possible. I'm really hoping to find a supply of a more budget friendly option. I appreciate botanically dyed natural yarn is not financially accessible for everyone and I'd love to find at least one base I can offer at the SW prices.

    • @RAHowes
      @RAHowes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheMakersCorner that would be awesome. Yeah. I love the hand dyed but financially it's special occasion only for me. The rustic is the workhorse. There's some out there. Even spotlight has the keepsake yarn now ($8 for a ball) not as good as rustic on price but an alternative at least.

    Congratulations on finding such a wonderful building. Loved that the sale had fallen through the first time and then you still ended up being able to buy it regardless. A roller coaster of emotions I bet! Such an enjoyable episode, as always. Also, when I heard my name for one of the giveaway prizes, I had to rewind to make sure I heard right. Thankyou so much. If I had the lamstrings yarn I’d match it with a plain fine mohair and knit a birds in a feather shawl or an Ambah Obrien knit such as the Chevy shawl

    • @TheMakersCorner
      @TheMakersCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooooh the birds in a feather shawl is gorgeous! Really great suggestion thank you so much. I think that would go so beautifully with a singlet and jeans in the slightly cooler months here. And I have mohair too so that's handy... hmmm thank you so much.
