Of the four "apocryphal" masses - i.e., Bach's masses besides the B minor - this one is the best, in my opinion. Not that there's a need to compare them, exactly - they're all superb - but nonetheless, this one's so moving.
Are they of doubtful authenticity ? This is one of the greatest sacred works I've ever had the honour to experience...If its not by Bach,then who could be this great master to produce such a work ?
Not at all! I meant 'apocryphal' in the Biblical sense - i.e. outside the canon, or, in this case, outside of (fairly large) group of Bach's most performed works. It is perhaps a far-fetched usage -- looking back now, I would not have phrased it that way. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for clarifying.Its a little crazy how many masterful works Bach made.Other composers would probably dream of creating such a work.The Kyrie is utter genius.He had unbelievable facility with counterpoint and amazing sense of intensity and drama!

Why was this Mass and the other "Kleine Messe" unfinished? Or, did the congregation sing the other parts? (Credo: Wir Glauben All an Einem Gott) and so on as Congregational Hymn Parts?
This Mass and ther other "Kleine Messe" are not unfinished. The short masses are the musical adaptation of the only Kyrie and Gloria unlike the Missa tota (with Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei as Mass in b minor BWV 232).
