I've heard that Gross staring at the camera during his speech was a bit of fourth wall-breaking from Isayama, accusing them of watching snk for their fascination of the gruesome things it shows. Personally, I also took it as a wake up call for the next message after he stops staring at the camera. He's not just calling us out on being morbidly fascinated by the titan-eating-human gore, but also our cruel, cathartic, satisfaction when we see what we believe to be a righteous death, and highlighting the vicious cycles of violence behind this satisfaction. Gross, like many non-Eldians, believe that the answer to peace is the destruction of all Eldians, not just due to their ancestors' conquering and war crimes. When Grisha asks if he feels remorse, he says "Of course I don't feel remorse. You're the murderers here. What were you Restorationists planning to do to Marley? Don't *you* feel any remorse?". Currently, he believes that wiping out these Eldians would protect his own nation. Then Grisha claims that he knows the truth, his own "truth", that founder Ymir was purely benevolent. This theory is born from his hatred of how he and his sister were treated by current Marley. Since we've been following him and his story, and seen the way Yams depicted Gross as, well, gross and despicable, we feel unapologetically enthused when he see him die the way he does. Gross wants Grisha to die so he can prevent Grisha from wiping out Marley. Grisha wants Gross to die for what he did to his sister, and for how Marleyans/other nations treat Eldians in internment. Other nations hate Eldia for how they violently conquered them. Every new generation wants revenge for past sins. Because of this cycle of hatred, we feel euphoric when characters (especially ones as callous as Gross) die for what they've done to the characters we care about. We just think they're getting what they deserve. They all believe they're justified, even if they have to kill others to reach their "peace".
RBA thought they were justified. In their thinking, wiping out the Eldians on Paradis and taking the Founder would mean the threat of the millions of colossal titans would no longer be on the rest of the world, and maybe other nations could accept interned Eldians back into society again. They think they can atone for Eldia's past sins if they can just remove that threat, even if they have to get their hands dirty. But it's okay to them, because they've been taught that Eldians are devils anyway. The survey corps think they're justified in wiping out the warriors, for what they did to Paradis. Killing former comrades will be hard, but it's okay because they were threatening their safety. They all believe that they have no other choice. And there goes the cycle, built on allegiances, propaganda from the state, the lack of knowledge of other populations.
Everyone of his is like him, we watch or do violence to the others because it make us alive. Some will disagree on this one. But humans have a complex thoughts.
I agree. That fourth wall break hit me hard. When most people started watching this show/reading this manga it showed titans eating people and we were drawn to it. I also think its good commentary on those justified acts of violence you see on social media. I saw a guy get his head blown off by a shot gun. The caption said that he was a child rapist however. I didnt know how to feel about it it was weird lol

This episode was THE episode that made AOT my favorite show of all time. The story is just incredible. It has it all. History, religion, race, conspiracy, betrayal, war, propaganda and in your face cruelty. The best writing I've ever had the delight to see unfold without holding anything back. Thank you Isayama and thank you for reviewing it in all its glory.
As a One Piece lover, without being bias I can say AOT is a masterpiece. This difference between both is that OP is just longer and brighter but both series story telling is out of this world.
dina said "No matter what form I take, I promise I'll come and find you" and she did twice, first time in episode 1, she found his new home. And in season 2 finale because Eren ate his father so she found him again :D insane
also looking back at that act of snapping carla that it wasnt a coincidence. see, it was established that when you became a titan, you get connected to this 'paths' and dina being a bit more sentient than regular titan knew carla is grishas new wife. not sure how true this may be, i also read this bit somewhere and thought it kinda made sense.
My "fast-food" picks for AoT are Jake Retake and Heavenly Controller. Both understand more or less what is going on and have fun reactions. HC is a lot more fast-food than Jake, but I find him hilarious. And Jake has quite a solid understanding of the story that is almost comparable to Im. For the real nutritious stuff though, I come here.
I'm really stoked to see that: 1. You're taking BOTH versions of their history with a critical stance and 2. You admitted why you were excited along with Grisha during his "fanatic" speech. With the world getting bigger, and more information + knowledge coming in past this point, like you said, I think this sort of critical thinking and acknowledgement of characters' experiences will make me enjoy your future reactions even more. It's one thing that you're observant, but another thing entirely that you're able to think critically and take in more than one perspective.
Candy Zhou Yep the only other reactors who did that were the SOS Bros and even then one of them was a manga reader so that may have helped. This guy doing it on his own is insane.
@@theblackswordsman9951 Heetah and Husstla are pretty good too, they don't go super indepth however. But you can tell they are piecing it together as they go and at the very least are accurate. I wish they would do longer deeper discussions, because it seems to me they have stuff they wanna say, but are low on time.
I like how you don't immediately assume that eldia is in the right here. Most reactors seem relieved when grisha translates the scrolls, forgetting that the scrolls were written by eldians.
The only reason why the Santa Titan didnt get “Eren’s Titan” is because Eren saved Armin by going in the mouth. He was swallowed alive. Marcel and Berthololold were all bitten to death, completing the transfer to Ymir and Armin, respectively. It’s a small yet defining detail. Can you just imagine Eren losing the titan power to the santa titan? ahahaha.
Just some little fun facts that might interest you: -In season 1 there was the music track called "Eren the C". Of course hinting towards him being the coordinate. -In season 2 when the smiling titan gets eaten, the name of the track playing is "Attack on D", hinting towards her name being Dina. -This episode Grisha says that he named his baby Zeke, hoping he would lead them to victory. Thats because the way "Zeke" is pronounced is like the german word "Sieg", which translated means "Victory".
I definitely think that Eren getting Grisha's memory is triggered by reading through those books, similar to how he got memory of the Reiss cave incident, while he was actually there. My favorite thing in this episode is that everything contradicts itself. You have two views on history that are at odds. The contradiction of the First King of the Walls threatening to flatten the world, while being a pacifist. That Day was also the title of episode 2. I think it's a nice parallel between Grisha and Eren, both had a day that changed the entire trajectory of their lives. Kinda like how our whole perspective on this show changed with the stuff they found in the basement. Great reaction and discussion, nearly 2 hours long. But this one definitely warranted that. Looking forward to those last two episodes and I'm even more excited for you to start Season 4.
This is how i imagine Erwin’s reaction would be like if he get a chance to see the basement. Wow FlimBuff u did it! Really hope u’ll hop on S4 hype train soon enough.
1 hour and 50 minutes for the best reaction of this episode of Shingeki on YT. And I saw 1 year ago when this S3 Part 2 was airing some 10 minutes reactions and 2 minutes discussion for this episode, like bruh people weren’t event trying to understand nor unpack the incredible amount of informations this episode provided to the audience. This is the real (full) basement reveal and the fact that people didn’t dig at all in the flashback was beyond me. Well technically not all of it, as you saw Grisha’s flashback ends next ep, but still 80% of the infos are here. The fact that you can think critically and don’t take any absolute stance (also for the various histories presented) as factual underlines once again how perceptive and open minded you are about approaching to the plot of a show, anime, TV series or film that is. The hype I have for the next 2 eps and your S4 content can’t be described. Just thank you for these discussions. Also shoutout to Sephizen doing God’s work for trying to keep you away from spoilers as much as possible. Actually if you’re reading the comment thank you for your work :)
@@blackpepper2610 well I can’t just grasp what’s worth paying for if the things showed on YT are poor. I like Im’s style (and not only his style) about showing all the discussion portion on YT
So much could be said about this episode and series, but you put it nicely at the end there. "Isayama is just brilliant, absolutely brilliant." That he is FilmBuff, that he is. The man is a real life prodigy for coming up with such a grandiose story in his early 20's while also being his 1st work too, and to have made such an impact on the world . . . Madness.
Dude, you're so sharp. I love the part when you noticed Gross was looking at the camera, something that went over many people's heads. Yes, Isayama-sensei said he wrote Gross as a message to the audience.
Shiiiiit, man. Everything I want to say ultimately just boils down to this: I CANNOT WAIT for you to see the rest of this story unfold!!! It's almost like I get to experience it for the first time again :') Congratulations on being so right so early about so much that was revealed here! It was awesome watching you see all those pieces click into place. As usual, you are one of the only reactors to make note of certain things that were shown here. I knew you would! Really enjoyed the discussion on Zeke too. All the Jaegers are so fascinating, aren't they?
What's really amazing about this episode is how it actually shows how some of the same titans we've seen back in the 1st season came to exist, which is a very nice detail added which makes you realize how everything connects.
50:24 As I understand it, there's a subtlety that is lost a bit in the subtitles to this part of that scene. Eren starts speaking with "Watashi wa..." when he would normally use "Boku wa...". The former is a more professional manner of speaking, typical to Grisha Yaeger, while the latter is a bit more juvenile, or masculine. Just another detail that adds to how real these memories feel to him (not to mention how sharp Armin is for instantly picking up on it.)
One of the great things about Attack on Titan is its very logically consistant within its own story, so an observant reactor like this can really dig in. Its great to watch someone trying to connect all the dots, because they are all there in a way that is just so rare in most shows. Awesome to watch.
Extremely impressive analysis, which I’ve honestly just come to expect by now. You’re spoiling us with the length. I believe you’ll find what’s to come largely very satisfying.
Back in Descent, when Reiner was talking about "this evil race," he was talking about his own people. Back in Charge when Bertholdt lost his composure, he called Armin a devil, the same slur the Marleyans used for him back home. Edit: saw you touched upon this in the episode :)
"I wonder if Dina could sense a connection between Grisha and Eren because it was his son" - remember, when she finds Eren in S2 he has eaten Grisha already. So Grisha is "inside" him.
Dunno if anyone mentioned it (a quick search seemed to indicate that no), but similarly to when Erwin was talking to Levi; there is some "lost in translation" use of personal pronouns in this episode. When Eren wakes up he uses "watashi" to refer to himself (instead of "ore") while asking "Who I am?"... When Armin inquires about what he just said, he is not really questioning what he said but HOW he said it. What stroke Armin wrong wasn't (just) Eren wondering who he was, but that he used the term "watashi" to refer to himself while doing so... Something that he has never used before and Armin; being his best and oldest friend, on top of really smart, knows exactly how Eren talks... Not only didn't Eren know who he was right away when waking up... but he was like another person all together while questioning himself... talking like, "an old person".
@@TechnoArpan Again, still sounds like bullshit. If my best friend wakes up from a nightmare, screaming, and asks "who am I?" I'm not gonna give a shit about how he fucking phrased it bruh
I love how Im smiled when it said "X years ago our ancestor Ymir Fritz.." you could see him make the connection with "our" Ymir 😁 Edit: fuck, the reaction to Dina walking in. I got goosebumps man. All the theories vindicated. Awesome moment for Im. Edit again because this guy never doesn't surprise me: Im got so many tiny details and possibilities out of this episode that I've never seen another anime reactor pick up on, holy crap. This is so awesome to see from an up to date manga perspective.
You are the best reactor about Attack on titan around the whole TH-cam, You totally understand the emotion and the feeling of AOT that author want to express
Man, finally an intelligent reactor that doesn't overreact and actually pays attention to the little tiny details. This is why I'm subbed to this channel lol. The fact that you spend a ton of time analyzing the episode makes you really stand out, so keep it up :)
3am in Germany. Was about to go to sleep. Then I saw you uploaded. Fuck sleep. I have been waiting for your take on this. It’s been agonizing. Thank fuck it’s here Also. You’re right that Grisha‘s friends look Familiar. All of Grisha’s friends are the Titans that ate Eren and his friends in Season 1 episode 5. Except Dina. Obviously Also Also. Funny you called Ymir Fritz a god with her Titan power. That’s what Rod Reiss called himself and Historia when talking about titans.
As a manga reader, I realized a lot of things just by watching your AoT reactions. I love how you go even beyond when analyzing them. Not just reacting about the action and fulfilling scenes, but really appreciating the story of this series overall. Can't wait for more from you. Best AoT reactor out there! Mad respect for you, dude! Keep going ✊🏻❤
When you're used to Takeout AoT reactions but you start to watch FILMBuFF reactions and get treated to a freaking Holiday feast each and every time. Good stuff!
I don't know if someone told you but .. when Eren woke up and said "Who am I?" He used the word "watashi" to refer to himself, and it is what his father uses. Eren used to always use "ore" and this is what Armin meant when he asked him "did you say watashi?" "watashi" and "ore" are both terms you use to refer to yourself in Japanese. Great reaction and great discussion as always!!
Maybe it's due to my subs, but it's interesting how the subbed version seems to omit the minor detail that it was the 145th Fritz king that fled to Paradis. Even the dub included that part lol About your comment on sympathetic Marleyans, there's a minor moment in the manga that was cut from the anime on the wall where one of the soldiers expresses dismay/disgust about what Gross did to Grisha's sister
Your reaction is always so fascinating to watch and your discussion is the cherry on top. You definitely deserve more subscribers, the way you pay attention and get to the conclusion is amazing, you catch a lot that most reactors ignore or don't see.
I haven't watched the episode yet but for some reason I fell more hyped for it than I felt when the actual episode released.. man filmbuff is something else
Yeah, I noticed in your Season 3 Episode 11 reaction that you thought that Grisha was suffering from memory loss when he met Keith Shardis outside the walls. As you mentioned, he undoubtedly had memory loss from consuming Kruger, but I think that he had the usual span of memory loss that we witnessed in Titan shifter transfers. In Season 1 episode 2, Eren seems to have memory loss of about day but still has memory of the actions in his dreams before he wakes up; while Armin, in Season 3 episode 19, has a similar memory loss of about a day and has some memories of the battle. Also, the expression on Grisha's face in his cell and the conversation he has soon after seem to me that he had all of his memories from his past. When Grisha meets Keith, he says "What are all you doing outside the wall? Don't tell me .. you are fighting?!". My first impression (upon revisiting the scene after the end of Season 3) was that Grisha was considering the possibility that all of his fellow patriots and Dina might be killed by the soldiers. Though that is probably the most likely reason, he might also been shocked that the Paradis Eldians, the people he would start and share his second life with, were even fighting against Titans in human form at all.
Damn, I've been watching react TH-camrs for a while now but I somehow just now came across your channel. These reactions are on a completely different level, your analysis is crazy accurate and you seem like a really educated guy.
You are the only reacting youtuber who's videos i watch more for the analisis and the discussion than the actual reaction (which i still enjoy and look forward to). Keep up the great work man. Cheers from mexico
I have seen tons of AoT reactors But I'm sure with all of your reactions to AoT (including the one that you recently reacted to, which is season 4 part 2), you are my number one favorite reactor to AoT
First of all, another stellar reaction dude, always interested in hearing your insights. This goes back to Grisha being so open minded with Eren all the way back to season 1, opposed to Carla who was very strict and against Eren joining the Corps. Grisha already experienced what it means to force your own beliefs or fears on your child instead of letting them be who they chose so he's not doing it again, he's in full support of Eren. And this different parenting of Grisha is something that will come up again in the future.
One intetesting thing is that the first thing Grisha said when Zeke was born it is about his royal blood. Also, Zeke means "victory" in german, which kinda foreshadows the role Grisha and Dina gave to him
@@eyk2823 yeah well its a german word too lmao. It can be french and german. Im just wondering if the author took the names from the german language or the french one. Since there are alot of references to germany, i assumed paradis is another one
Info bomb done right, best Mystery Box reveal! Isayama elevates AOT from a shounen series about teenagers fighting certain evil entity that is titan into a more sophisticated complicated story with racial, national and historical conflict. This feel like a complete show and in a good way. To think we, along with the survey corps members, finally beat the odds after heavy sacrifices, only to discovered the bizarre truth of this world. Straight chills. Also season 4 is also out, no spoiler but it is hands down the best seasons in the making. Can't wait to see your reaction to it!
Saw this in this comment section but it's absolutely on-point When Zeke baby scene appears Other reactors: OHHH WHAAT HE IS EREN'S HALF BROTHER?!? OMG OMG Im: Oh damn, he has royal blood.
I watched this episode a year ago and I’ve watched so many reactions but after watching yours I still learn something new. Keep up the good work man! I’m so glad you made this recent episode almost 2 hours long
Finally someone who pays attention. I like these reactions because he pays attention and actually knows what is going on based on the previous episodes. Great reactions!!!
Definitely looking forward to your take on the final season! I've never been a fan of 'reactors', but honestly man you're something else. You pay attention, you make connections really quickly and you keep track of the tiniest of detail! Well done, I hope your channel goes far!
I am really looking forward to seeing what happens with Zeke - I think your theory that he has a long con / his own agenda going on might hold some water, especially if we find out later that he's hiding his royal heritage from the Marley people. I don't know what's going to happen with that but I am thrilled that you brought it up here. Amazing as always and I hope you were pleased to know that most of your ongoing theories throughout the show have been dead-on! This is going to go down as the monumental FilmBuFF episode, for sure.
yep ive been following for many years. best reactions, best analysis and most important best focus and concentration on the things happening before you. Damn i gotta say that waiting a week everytime hurts...
I never thougth about the cycle of childs hating their father until you brougth it up, now thinking about it knowing that you watched ''attack titan'' including the part where Eren says ''love someone inside the walls or it will only repeat'', this shows us that Grisha managed to break that cycle of childs hating their fathers by having Eren (son) look up to him by loving him, so now that the cycle has been broken things can start to change, i don't know if for good or not but definetly change. Its incredible that after watching sooo many times this episodes you manage to bring things to my mind that i never even thougth about, really love that about your review part.
I've never ever taken a Liverpool supporter so seriously before. Big up man. Absolutely love your content and I wait for it anxiously every week. From a Manc
The best Christmas gift I could ask for. Everything truly does change after this, Isayama has done an absolutely phenomenal job, as well as studio WIT entirety of the staff. Thank you for the notes and getting to hear your take on the story is so refreshing from others. I can honestly say without a doubt you are THE best shingeki reactor or any reactor that I have watched. Hope you have a very Merry Christmas Filmbuff!
I see Filmbuff I click. The fact youre able to be observant but also think critically and look at things from different view points makes me so excited for everything from here on out. Ive seen some reactors that just sort of look at things from a single viewpoint and seemingly miss all the nuances that is mixed in with not only the plot, but backstory (lore?), characters and why characters are the way they are or act/think the way they do.
You're pronouncing Paradis right! One of the only reactors I've seen do so, actually. It's French for paradise, so that's why the Marleyans call the island Paradise (楽園 rakuen in Japanese)
Great review as always, I'm astonished by the power of your deduction. The one thing I think you misunderstood is that the pacifist King Fritz who went to Paradis and built the walls wasn't the first King. It was a bit over 100 years before the current events in the story and Eldian Empire was founded around 1700 years before the moment Grisha's dad exposited history to his son. Pacifist King Fritz was already 145th King in Eldian history.
you're amazing, man! i've been looking forward to your reaction to all this information for weeks and you definitely did not disappoint. phenomenal discussion, you literally don't miss a single detail lmao. i also like that you're not immediately writing off either side of this war as good or evil.
I cannot wait for that slew of WTF moments that are upcoming. Also, seeing how much you love this show, I'd love to see your thoughts on Naoki Urasawa's *Monster* . That show is an unbelievable psychological thriller on par with the absolute best of that genre.

This i how GoT should have felt when night walkers came. And it didnt. We just got some dark cluttered moronic battle scene.
@@IveBeenChris is OP worth watching ?
@@kalvinxo4693 yes! One Piece is my favourite with Shingeki. If you're bothered by the pacing you can always switch to the manga.
That’s how I feel with One Piece. It has everything you just mentioned. One Piece and AoT are fictional masterpieces
dina said "No matter what form I take, I promise I'll come and find you" and she did twice, first time in episode 1, she found his new home.

God, watching this just feels so good after watching way too many "fast-food" AOT S4 reactions...
I'm really stoked to see that:
1. You're taking BOTH versions of their history with a critical stance and

Can you just imagine Eren losing the titan power to the santa titan? ahahaha.
You spelled burrito right the chosen one
Basically they have to bite them in order to consume their spinal fluid.
And kudos on spelling Beruthororototo correctly.

Just some little fun facts that might interest you:
-In season 1 there was the music track called "Eren the C".
Woahhhh
woooowww, thanks
Love finding out new stuff like this, just makes me appreciate everything even more.
The other fun fact is the map being the episode name background since Episode 1 :|.

So much could be said about this episode and series, but you put it nicely at the end there. "Isayama is just brilliant, absolutely brilliant." That he is FilmBuff, that he is. FilmBuff, “He’s the owl”
“She”s the smiling titan,”
Me, “You’re a genius!!”
About the "who am I" thing:
In Japanese he used the pronoun "watashi" to refer to himself which is unusual for him. That's why Armin was confused.
Falco said “who am i” after waking from the dream too. I don’t understand these parallels between eren and falco and their dreams
Dude, you're so sharp. I love the part when you noticed Gross was looking at the camera, something that went over many people's heads. Yes, Isayama-sensei said he wrote Gross as a message to the audience.
And it flew right over it, for an immense majority of people 😢
Shiiiiit, man. Everything I want to say ultimately just boils down to this: I CANNOT WAIT for you to see the rest of this story unfold!!! It's almost like I get to experience it for the first time again :')
Congratulations on being so right so early about so much that was revealed here!
It's all been building up to this
One of the great things about Attack on Titan is its very logically consistant within its own story, so an observant reactor like this can really dig in. Its great to watch someone trying to connect all the dots, because they are all there in a way that is just so rare in most shows. Awesome to watch.
Season 4 is gonna be mind breaking but if anyone could understand the message of it, its gonna be you.
Extremely impressive analysis, which I’ve honestly just come to expect by now. You’re spoiling us with the length.
I believe you’ll find what’s to come largely very satisfying.
Christmas came early this year. Almost 2 hours video... Im, you absolute madlad
Absolute madlad indeed
Back in Descent, when Reiner was talking about "this evil race," he was talking about his own people. Back in Charge when Bertholdt lost his composure, he called Armin a devil, the same slur the Marleyans used for him back home.
Edit: saw you touched upon this in the episode :)
"I wonder if Dina could sense a connection between Grisha and Eren because it was his son" - remember, when she finds Eren in S2 he has eaten Grisha already. So Grisha is "inside" him.
Filmbuff: “one of them has a hammer…”
Me: *nervous sweating*
BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS ALL DAY
Only all day, not for over a year? 😂
Yeah the $5 for this early, totally worth it
Dunno if anyone mentioned it (a quick search seemed to indicate that no), but similarly to when Erwin was talking to Levi; there is some "lost in translation" use of personal pronouns in this episode.
Ok, so you're saying that Armin wasn't interested in the fact that Eren asked who he was? That sounds like bullshit.
@@decomposedcorpse5186 no, he's saying Armin was more interested in the fact that he wasn't talking like himself either
@@TechnoArpan Again, still sounds like bullshit. If my best friend wakes up from a nightmare, screaming, and asks "who am I?" I'm not gonna give a shit about how he fucking phrased it bruh

I don't know if someone told you but ..
when Eren woke up and said "Who am I?" He used the word "watashi" to refer to himself, and it is what his father uses. Eren used to always use "ore" and this is what Armin meant when he asked him "did you say watashi?"
"watashi" and "ore" are both terms you use to refer to yourself in Japanese.
Great reaction and great discussion as always!!
Maybe it's due to my subs, but it's interesting how the subbed version seems to omit the minor detail that it was the 145th Fritz king that fled to Paradis. Even the dub included that part lol
About your comment on sympathetic Marleyans, there's a minor moment in the manga that was cut from the anime on the wall where one of the soldiers expresses dismay/disgust about what Gross did to Grisha's sister

I haven't watched the episode yet but for some reason I fell more hyped for it than I felt when the actual episode released.. man filmbuff is something else
This dude takes notes on AoT like I wish I could take notes on my classes lmao

But I'm sure with all of your reactions to AoT (including the one that you recently reacted to, which is season 4 part 2), you are my number one favorite reactor to AoT
The most impressive feat - actually noticing and using the proper pronunciation of "Paradis".
One intetesting thing is that the first thing Grisha said when Zeke was born it is about his royal blood.
Also, Zeke means "victory" in german, which kinda foreshadows the role Grisha and Dina gave to him

You're pronouncing Paradis right! One of the only reactors I've seen do so, actually. It's French for paradise, so that's why the Marleyans call the island Paradise (楽園 rakuen in Japanese)

Not just this guy, but he is one of the extremely rare ones who do such in depth discussion. The SoS bros are another example
