Funny story Dustin, About a month ago, I started noticing a Ford Transit Connect van which is very similar to yours. Its at a dealership in Sandy. I immediately thought to myself, thats the perfect bike transporter. I could put bikes inside on trips to prevent theft and to protect them from wind and elements. I told my daughter and she scoffed at me. Then two weeks later, you get the same type of vehicle. I showed her your video and said, "See !!! I told you!!" LOL

My recommendation, get a taller cot, whichever will fit between wheel wells, I have army cot in my sprinter, very comfortable with padding and will keep cold air coming up thru cot! With regular cot I can put 4 storage bins underneath, army cot is bombproof but also love my other easycot being isimple to deploy and extremely comfortable

    Hey there mr.klein.....van ideas....
    1-roofbox=extra storage,bike gear,pump,seat,helmet,wet gear....ect.
2-100w solar panel and leisure battery set up,with usb fittings in van...or jackary solar power station, even simpler to use and keep in van.
3-single wood bed with underneath storage, multiple bins underneath, could add a pull out to make double if wife goes a camping.
4-tint rear and side windows, add curtains to all, using curtain wire and screw eyes....plus make out of reflectix heat screens fit in window shape, add tiny magnets on side to hold onto metal surround, sew black fabric on front, your choice of design on back.plus keeps vzn cooler in summer, warmernin winter, helps retain heat.
5-make a cook chuck box,to use in van and out, inside top under folding lid,gas cooker, underneath food and utensil store.can be made in wood, decorated in e.b.d stickers.
6-make black out curtain for behind seats,to block light, aid sleep, aid in heat retention and cool in summer.
7-add to van a chinese deisel heater but you will need extra battery which u could split charge relay it,so it charges of main battery when drivig...thats you toasty warm, plus really good bargain price.
8-add reflectix to all van walls, silver tape all seams and hard to get areas, then add some sound deadoning aswell, can buy both in roll stuck together. Then u could self adhesive carpet over or clad in wood.
9-battery lights round flat type, push touch with remote control, cheap but easy to do,pack 6 normally,4 above head, one in chuck box,one under bed.
10-think about roof skylight, max air fan or vent for cooling in summer and letting bit air in,clear top good to see stars out,can install yourself, easy to do...just need balls to cut van roof lol.
Additional could do,a lightbar on roof or spottys on front, make an awning using 2x poles a tarp or camo basha, guy lines
And some roof magnets or suction hooks...works a treat....on roof top add cargo cage on a roof rack.
Theres few ideas of what could do.....hope it helps you.
    Keep up the goodness..
    Peace.

Add a memory foam mattress on top of the cot or whatever bed you end up with. Comfy, and it's the extra insulation you need. We put one in our Sienna mini-van on a bed we built with some plastic shelving made into 4 small tables instead of shelves. Easily removable and 12 inches of storage underneath too!

  • @marshallsokoloff

a few things that I've found that you my find too: using an extension on your bike rack to gain clearance for the rear doors doesn't work out well because the cantilevered weight bounces a lot, and it lowers the departure angle at the back of the van so that the rack risks scraping on rougher roads. I've seen people permanently mount a Rocky Mount (fork) off the top of one of the rear doors, which works pretty well if you just bungie the rear wheel to the bumper. If you release the bungie when not driving, the door can still be swung open, though not all the way. It's also pretty secure.
I concur with others who have said to raise the cot onto a platform which will give you storage underneath, and make it a more comfortable place to sit while cooking/eating, etc.
The Mr. Buddy heaters throw a lot of heat, but burning propane for heat creates a lot of moisture which you may find a bit much. Cracking the windows helps, but not completely. Plus the dangers of propane, blah blah blah. Insulation and insulated covers for the glass will go a long way to keeping you warm at night. You actually generate a lot of your own heat if it's not constantly being drained away.

From all my band days of touring America in a van, I learned to ONLY use graphics on the outside that do not invite folks to said van: Make a dope logo for "Joe's Pretty Clean Laundry", "Sam's Fucking Poisonous Snakes", etc. ...not "Jenifer's Amazing Plumbing", "Rodney's Clean Electric", "Dustin's Cycling", etc. ... that means tools and rad stuff are inside. My 2 cents. Otherwise, looks dope and I'm stoked for your future in this thing my man!

When I go backpacking, I always miss a few specific things. When I build a van, I will make sure to take care of those things.
    -Running water
    -Shower
-A comfy chair to sit in
    -A table to eat from.
I really like your foot pump. I think that will probably be my solution for the running water and the shower. Doesn't require power, leaves both hands free.

I use a webasto heater. It's awesome, taps into your gas tank. But it was the hardest part of the van conversion. If I could go back I'd just use propane. If you're worried about it, you can drill a few holes in the floor where you'll keep the heater for escaped gas to flow through and install a roof fan.

Couldnt tell if, but... If not.. Then: Might consider a pad to go between you and the cot. Not for comfort, but to keep some of the cold air under you from sucking off some heat. The extra padding is just a bonus. Another Option you have, is velcro. You can put velcro on the areas around the windows and on small pieces of fabric and just stick on or yoink down when you need. Might consider putting a rack up to hang the cot on when not in use as well. Give yourself a bit of working room should you need it.

You can get a roll of that silver reflectix stuff they sell at the home depot and some little extra strong magnets and some aluminum tape. Cut the reflectix to fit a window. Tape some magnets to the corners so it reaches the metal around the windows and easily cover windows. since you know someone that sews you can fancy them up with fabric and thinsulate insulation as well

Why do cyclists and converted vans go so well together. As someone who spends 50+ days/year in my Metris I have many recommendations. First would be to replace the cots with a 4 inch foam trifold mattress, the lift it off the ground to maximize storage. Be sure to get some sort of fan installed before summer. Good luck!

To where the water system isn’t necessarily exposed, but you could still remove the storage system entirely. For hauling other things either having to do with cycle/adventure activities.

Much cheaper in the long run than the 1lb cans, with no added waste. Hi Dustin . Thank you for the awesome content as always . Have you considered either a roof rack with maybe a roof top tent or for extra packing space a roof box similar to the ones made by THULE????? im sure you would be able to DIY one ? also with a roof rack or a roof box you could add a solar panel and that could bring in electrics that you could use for lighting or charging your electronic devices? I am in a process of buying a Volkwagen CADDY LWB. I have search the interwebs and there are 100's of DIY ideas for microcampers , from storage solutions to mini kitchens and fold away beds to MTB/gravel bike storage ideas .

Get some foil on the bottom of the cot to reflect some of your body heat back up :-)

an underquilt, like people use for hammocks would be pretty sick. it keeps the material from being compressed and reallllly keeps you warm

I know you already built this thang out, but as far as a heater goes. . .I would recommend a diesel heater. America makes expensive ones, or China makes one for 1 bill or so. They are super efficient, and no need crack any windows cuz the exhaust is piped outside. Oh yeah baby

That sink set up is genius - looks super easy to take out of the van too - aesthetically I would just add a hook and grommet system and hang a piece of fabric from the bottom of the counter top and boom, instant lift and hides all the hosey bits.

Awesome van dustin, think the set up is great. Would it be even possible to build a unit were your cot is? Have the cot, but all your amenities folding/sliding out from it? Gives you more ankle room for changing, and general tom-foolery. Amazing and health to enjoy the new vehicle! 🤙

Do they make swivel brackets for the lil baby ram vans? Would give you another couple seating options.
Also, that van needs some more cargo options on the roof. If you need a Yakima hook up HMU, I may be able to help.
