  • This is patio gardening on a budget, I promised earlier this year that I would do a series on container gardens based on how we used to grow when we didn't have access to a garden. I'll demonstrate just how much food can be grown in a tiny amount of space all on an extremely low budget. This is patio gardening on a budget
    A lot of these ideas are ideal for a balcony garden, no need for fancy or expensive planters grow with what's available.

      Love your tips and channel,I'm disabled so can't bend or dig, I'm like you and collect random containers to plant in, especially for seeds! Just wanted to say,if you're getting a cat, lily pollen is highly toxic to them so be careful.

    I did an accidental experiment in a similar size container (probably slightly deeper) in an office car park. The communal bins were getting full of cardboard and it was coughing a lot to get them empty so we shredded up the cardboard and filled up the bottom of planters probably half full before we had any compost last summer in the UK. It was extremely hot and the plant is that had the card board in thrived. Furthermore, I planted a spring onion from the supermarket on the side of one of the planters and it grew to enormous proportions and are still growing and carried on growing throughout the winter. So in summary, this is definitely a good thing to do. Ps great idea with the washing line you’ve given. Me a good idea for Temporary fence. I could concrete the posts into pots in a similar way. That way I can then move the posts when I want to change the protected area. Eg a mobile chicken run

    I’m growing salad and pak choi in an old pallet. The slugs and snails don’t eat my produce there!

    I really like your comment about sometimes forgetting the dogma around permaculture (and no dig for that matter) and just getting on with it. Not everyone needs an herb spiral. I also appreciate your reuse of materials as I've been a scrounger myself for 60+ years. I am fortunate to have 10 acres of land and a lot of livestock, but I still do most of what you demonstrated here with containers and manure (and a zillion amazon boxes!). Well done.

    I'm using old guttering for salad crops. They can be placed on window sills as window boxes. I take many pots and planters from the plastic pile in the tip. All for free.
    Used compost is stored in a collection of dustbins when it's not used and the heat generated by the plastic has caused a lot of beneficial fungi to grow within the soil. I'm recycling my compost for the price of a bin which here in Wales is a lot cheaper than buying more compost.

    Great videos. I have a small garden. Only the sides have raised beds. About 70 cm wide and 3 meters long and 40 cm deep. How about a video with information where we can't make or have acces to a lot of compost, mulch etc but pure basics and when to sow and how to maximize the area. For example i would love to do cucumbers and tomato but is it wise given the small space. Thanking you in advance. Sukran.

      I made self watering pots (from catering mayonnaise tubs)for my cucumbers and tomatoes last year. Sadly, I lost my cucumbers all but one to a root beatles but I had so many tomatoes I had to can them!

    I have tons of shredded paper from a neighbour. Can I use used coffee grounds and shredded paper to fill the base of a 22in high 100L plastic pot? Or, will coffee, as some say, cause compaction? Anyone here knows?
    We want to grow Jerusalem artichokes & was advised to grow them in a 100L pot on the basis that they are huge, tall & productive.

    Your tips on how to easily fill containers are so useful for anyone wanting to grow veg without a garden. One thing though - do you think its a good idea to plant digitalis alongside salad? I avoid having foxgloves close to my greens because its so poisonous.

    • @MsFlipper1969
      @MsFlipper1969 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought that, but as long as you can identify, shouldn't be a problem. I don't think they contaminate localised soils.
