So why does Kansas hate Missouri?
It all started with one of the worst laws in American history- The Kansas-Nebraska Act. By the 1850s, many Americans were illegally moving to what would become Kansas. Most of them came for that sweet, cheap, farmland, ignoring the earlier promises to give much of the area to Native Americans who had previously been pushed out of their homes back east. After talks picked up about building a transcontinental railroad through the area, Congress went to work trying to come up with a law to make Kansas a territory and give it the infrastructure it needed to allow settlement. It wasn’t easy. You see, there was the slavery issue. Americans were divided-go figure- about the expansion of slavery out west. According to the Missouri Compromise, passed back in 1820, any new territory created north of the 36°30’ parallel and west of Missouri couldn’t have slavery. So Missouri would be the last slave state north of 36-30. However, pro-slavery folks felt if Kansas was a territory it should also have slavery since they weren’t getting slavery in the desert southwest.
Pro-slavery and anti-slavery members of Congress passionately debated the issue. Finally, in 1854, Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas came up with another compromise, that crappy law I brought up earlier- The Kansas-Nebraska Act. Congress barely passed it, and President Franklin Pierce signed it into law on May 30, 1854. It created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. It got rid of that 36-30 line of the Missouri Compromise, and it established popular sovereignty in both territories to solve the slavery issue. In other words, it allowed the settlers to decide whether or not to have slavery in both territories. I know, what could go wrong, right?
Well a lot went wrong in Kansas. Remember, Missouri was a slave state. Within days of the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, hundreds of pro-slavery Missourians crossed the border into Kansas territory claiming land. They organized and plotted ways to politically influence the region. 11 days after the Act passed, Missourians put together a meeting at Salt Creek Valley, just west of Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, creating the Squatter’s Claim Association, and calling for people to sacrifice their lives by settling in Kansas to ensure it became a slave state.
Not to be outdone, the Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Company organized in uh, yeah, Massachusetts, an abolitionist hotbed, to help settlers move to Kansas to make sure it became a free state. It sent its first 29 settlers on July 29th, 1854.

Born in Kansas, grew up in Crawford county till I was 16, then my family moved over the border to Jasper county Missouri where I graduated from High School, and went to College. Having had to take both Kansas History and Missouri History classes was rather eye opening to say the least! One of my friends who is Scottish kept saying that I was from "the south" so i corrected him by saying Im from Kansas. "Eh, whats the difference?" He said. I replied "Ok, What part of ENGLAND are you from?" The look on his face was priceless, and before he could say anything I said "That right there, that is the difference."

Something about walking into the statehouse in Topeka and seeing the Curry “Bleeding Kansas “ mural pulls at the old heartstrings. Kansas is a good state. It’s just going through some tough times.

This kind of rivalry only really still applies to Western Missouri for some reason. Growing up in a bordertown, there was always a huge disdain for Kansans. Kids would tell Kansans to "go back across the river" as an insult when fighting, and everyone would swear Kansans are horrible drivers. The best part was the divisions in sports teams, as Jayhawk fans and Mizzou fans are always at each others throats, often times being points of contention in families, quite amusingly so. But ever since moving to and visiting around Eastern Missouri, it just seems like no one even cares about Kansas, they're too preoccupied with Illinois for some reason.

I'm from SE Missouri and this rivalry is well known during civil war alot of our area residents were burnt out and hunted down by union troops. Alot of people would run to the union soldiers and make up stories about their neighbors to get them killed or run off just so the could get their land. Read about local guy Sam hildebrand he did not choose a side until he was forced too by union sympathizers and former rivals using the law to take all he owned. Alot were called dutch back then which is an old reference for germans. The german immigrants only liked germans so they ran everyone else off. Claiming people owed them money so they could seize their land. Atrocities happened on both sides were whole families were killed or burnt out of their homes and hunted like animals. Those families remember still the things that were done past on y generation after generation. The movie outlaw Josey wells was about the same thing. The Jayhawkers were called Red Legs because of the pants they wore and were despised by most Missourians for being invaders. Jayhawkers hated Missourians because of the raids they commited into Kansas. Bushwackers were called that because they were mostly outdoorsman that lived off the land and would raid or attack from hiding thus the name Bushwackers.

Great video!!!! I am from Northeast OHIO and have lived in BOTH Kansas & Missouri while stationed in each state when I was in the US Army. Gained a fascination of the Kansas/Missouri Border War while stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, from 1988-1992. Explored Missouri visiting most of the Civil War sites and gained a better appreciation for that war because all you hear about is the fighting taking place in Virginia, Tennessee, and other locals.
Then was stationed at Fort Riley, KS, from 1993-2001 (still live in Kansas) and explored the Kansas side of the Border War. When in college, took a course on the American Civil War hoping to learn more about the fighting in the Trans-Mississippi Theatre, but the instructor insisted on focusing on the Eastern Theatre (usual battles). ALL my class assignments had to do with something about the little unknown battles of Kansas/Missouri/New Mexico - bastard tried to fail me because I would not focus on the Eastern Theatre. After some arguing, finally convinced that I was trying to "enlighten" the other students that the war was far more brutal/bloody/far reaching in this nation than just the "usual" sites.
Anyway, so much history of the pre-Civil War era, the Civil War era, and post Civil War era that is rarely (if ever) mentioned in history books or documentaries. To this day I LOVE both Kansas & Missouri and am still exploring each state as much as possible. Do NOT give a hoot about the Jayhawks, Wildcats, or Tigers (am a LOYAL BUCKEYE till I die - am from OHIO originally). Have adopted the Royals/Chiefs/Cardinals but also LOVE my Indians/Browns/Cavaliers from Cleveland!!!!

My dad took my brother and I to go see it and, being Mizzou fans, we tailgated on the Mizzou side of the parking lot. (They had essentially split the parking lot in half between the KU and MU fans.)
To just rub salt in the wound, it was not an uncommon sight to see people flying jet black flags with a "Q" emblazoned on them on the Missouri side, a reference to Quantrill's Raid.

One, this adds nuance to the black-and-white (no pun intended) viewpoint about White People down with slavery vs the large number of White people who willfully put their lives and their family's lives on the line to fight to the death to end the enslavement of *other people* --- who were Black --- not merely for themselves or their families. No govt ordered them to go fight at that point. This came from deep personal convictions.
Two, partly for deep Christian religious convictions about righteous causes vs Christian biblical excuses in the South.
Three, the original Social Justice Warriors in America, if you don't count the Am Rev as "social justice" against King George.
Four, lets say the slavery cause was 60% racist beliefs and 40% the defense of the belief in the right to *Property* ... meaning the right to buy sell and own human beings as valuable property like animals and inanimate objects. And people were willing to fight with extreme bitterness for and against that right. I picked 60/40 as a rough guess on 'beliefs'.

I was raised in Kansas City, MO. I know "State Line Road" well, and of course I was educated learning MO history. The Battle of Westport, in Kansas City, stopped the South's invasion into Western Missouri; and the battle of Ironton stopped into St. Louis. I went to college (first in 1974, then in 1986) in Southwest MO, at Springfield, MO. Springfield was where the battle of "Wilson's Creek" was fought which began the "Tiger's" invasion of Missouri. THEN, (in 1990) I moved to Lawrence, KS, where I did my graduate work at KU. KU's "battle song" is more of a chant, but it will chill you to the bones the first time you hear it. Just ask Teddy Roosevelt. As a life student and scholar of American history and American culture, I enjoy your content. Thanks for the blast into my past.

As a Missouri native and MU grad who has lived in Lawrence and attended KU, I can vouch for the voracity of this video. On a side note to those in the outside world: the city of Kansas City Missouri is named after the Kansas River, which empties into the Missouri River here. It is not named for Kansas. Kansas City MO was incorporated 7 years before Kansas became a state, and a separate city called Kansas City in Kansas was not founded for another 30 plus years.

    • @kyleby2
      @kyleby2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Very interesting, thanks. So is it safe to assume that the geographical area now known as Kansas wasn't a thing at the time KC was named, since MO used the Kansas name to name their city? Otherwise I'd think they would have avoided it like the plague. Or, was it done purposefully, in hopes to influence KS to be like MO?? I was born in Leavenworth and raised across the river in MO. My dad told these stories of KS/MO conflicts, esp. the Lawrence attack.

I'm from Michigan and we have a similar state rivalry with Ohio. A lot of it is due to the Michigan-Ohio State sports rivalry, but much of it dates back much further, back to when Michigan was first looking to enter the Union as a state. By 1835, Michigan had enough people under for statehood under the requirements of the Northwest Ordinance, but there was a border dispute with Ohio over a piece of land called the Toledo Strip (which, as the name suggests, contained the city of Toledo). This actually results from the lack of clear boundaries when during the time of the NO, meaning that Michigan and Ohio each had separate surveys laying claim to Toledo. I believe that most independent surveys supported Michigan's claim (though I heard this in a Michigan history class I took in college that was mostly designed for aspiring elementary school teachers, so take it with a grain of salt), but Ohio had already been a state for over 30 years at that point, which meant they had more influence in the federal government. Congress settled the issue through a compromise, in which Michigan would concede the Toledo Strip to Ohio hexchange for what is now the Upper Peninsula. Most people in Michigan resisted this because Toledo was a coastal city on Lake Erie and thus believed to be more economically profitable, but about ten years later, copper and iron ore were discovered in the Upper Peninsula, which more than offset any economic loss from the surrender of Toledo. And of course, Michigan had to accept the compromise in order to receive statehood, so we bitterly accepted it after much hesitation. The UP is also much bigger in land area, so ultimately Michigan got the better end of the deal on both counts. Though the dispute is known as the "Toledo War," this name is misleading because there was very little violence other than a few minor skirmishes.
While we're on the subject, allow me to add a bit more about the UM-OSU rivalry. I once read that Woody Hayes, the former head football coach at Ohio State, once went ran out of gas a few miles north of the state line on his way to UM, and pushed his car back into Ohio to get gas because he was so adamant about never spending a dime in Michigan. Legend has it that he could not even utter the name University of Michigan, but simply called it "the school up north." And the divisions don't end at the state borders either; I can recall when I was in middle school a lot of my classmates who were Michigan State fans preferred Ohio State when the UM-OSU football game came around. I can't say for sure whether this was based on the hope that a loss by Michigan would help MSU's rankings or whether they just hated U of M that much, but I always found it a little bit treasonous.

I was born and raised in the "burnt district" of Missouri. 4 counties along the western Missouri border were burned in a scorched earth policy under General Ewings "general order number 11" during the civil war. The order stated "every building big enough to hide a Bushwacker" be burned. Regardless of the side it's residents supported. It didn't have the effect Ewing envisioned. Though never numbering more than 500, those "Bushwackers (southern guerrilla fighters)" held over 50,000 union troops, plus kansas "jayhawkers, dedicated to their capture at bay for more than 20 years after the civil war ended. It's considered one of the best examples of guerrilla tactics to this day.

I was born and raised in Cass County, MO, which sits on the Kansas/Missouri border and is a few miles south of KC. William Quantrill launched the Lawrence Massacre from Cass Co. In retaliation the Union Army burned the entire country to the ground. Hardly nothing survived. It was like Armageddon in this part of Missouri.

The ‘Tigers’ mascot for the University of Missouri actually comes from a militia that defended Columbia, Missouri from confederate guerrillas. They called themselves the ‘Fighting Tigers of Columbia’. Missouri as a whole may have been a slave state, but being a midwestern college town, Columbia, just like today, was more aligned with St. Louis and Kansas City and was strongly pro-Union, in contrast to the surrounding 100 miles of farmland.

I've lived in both states. I was born in Kansas city Missouri. Within a stones throw of the state line. And I love the history of the area I live in. And I'm a proud Missourian.

Omg...I had no idea that such violence went on then between Kansas and Missouri. I lived in Missouri for 30 years. But I grew up in Southern Illinois near Missouri, and never heard of this particular series of conflicts. Thanks so much for posting this.

That John Brown song sounded like the song "solidarity forever."

My direct male-line ancestor moved from upstate New York to Fort Scott, KS some time before the war and served in the 41st Illinois Volunteers. I believe he must have seen action at Shiloh.
